ARMENIAN GOODS FIRST EXHIBITED AT "ETHNIC FOOD 2006" IN TORONTO

YEREVAN, September 11. /ARKA/. Armenian goods are first exhibited at
the leading "Ethnic Food 2006", held in Toronto on September 10-11.

Karen Harutunyan, representative of the Center for Agriculture and
Rural Development (CARD), six producers represent Armenia in Toronto.

Among them are Vedi Alco, Getnatun, Mets Syunik wine producers,
factories, producing natural juices Noyan and Sis, and also Gam
Company, producing herbal teas.

Harutunyan reported that the Armenian products are exhibited in a
separate pavilion at 200 square feets under the support of the CARD.

"Participation of Armenian companies in this exhibition will help
national processing companies promote their range of goods on the
Canadian market," he said.

The CARD was founded in April 2005, based on the Marketing Assistance
Project of the U.S. Department for Agriculture (USDA).

Since 1996, the USDA-MAP has rendered assistance to over 60 Armenian
enterprices, 25 producers’ and selling co-operatives, 50 credit clubs,
and thousands of farm economies throughout Armenian regions, giving
technical, financial, and marketing support.

All the four meetings of the 19th round of the Armenian Football
Championship ended 4:1 which is an exclusive coincidence in the
history of our football.

"Mika" beat "Gandzasar," "Banants" – "Kilikia," "Pyunik" – "Ulysses"
and "Ararat" – "Shirak" with that score.

The current champion "Pyunik" is leading the fixture table with
50 points. "Banants" is in the second place and "Mika" – in the
third. "Ararat" has got a real chance to move ahead. So far, the team
hasn’t lost any points and has displayed excellent participation at
the head of Varoujan Sukiasyan, chief coach of the team.

Nshan Erzeroumyan who has never left the field without goals scored
four goals at the meeting "Ararat – Shirak".

The next hearing of the lawsuit which had been filed by the prison
guards against Azeri Military Officer Ramil Safarov was held today
in Pest Central District Court, Trend reports with reference to Azeri
Embassy to Hungary.

At the hearing three prison guards at Ramil Safarov Prison gave
evidence on the case. The next session of the court will be held on 17
November with the appearance of two more witnesses. The court verdict
on this case may be issued on the same day, said Embassy officials.

Ramil Safarov has already been sentenced to life imprisonment for
murdering Armenian Military Officer Gurgen Markaryan.

YEREVAN, September 6. /ARKA/. The RA Police made a statement
in connection with the murder of Shahen Hovasapyan,
operative-investigation department head of the RA State Tax Service.

According to the Information-Analytical Office of the Police, on
September 6, at 9.35 a.m. the Central Office of the Police received
a signal of explosion on Byron Str. in the center of Yerevan.

An operative group, which had drove out to the place of the incident,
found out that the explosion occurred in GAS-31 with 005LL03 state
number.

As a result of the explosion Hovasapyan, who was in the car, died
and his driver was injured and was taken to hospital.

Police found it difficult to announce the preliminary version of the
accident, emphasizing that details of the case are being investigated;
motives of the murder are not known yet.

Police continues its work in the place of the incident.

A criminal case is instigated into the fact, stipulated by the article
402 of the RA Criminal Code "Murder", the case is processed by the
investigative department of the General Prosecutor’s Office.

SOCHI, SEPTEMBER 6, NOYAN TAPAN – ARMENIANS TODAY. A vernissage of two
artists, painter from Armenia Khachik Abrahamian and sculptor from
Sochi Hakob Khalafian, opened in the Art Museum in Sochi. According
to the "Yerkramas" (country) newspaper of Armenian of Russia, the
exhibition is timed for the Year of Armenia in Russia. Resident of
Sochi Hakob Khalafian, an admirer of the world of animals, sculptured
in the form of a square cat even his self-portrait.

And Khachik Abrahamian from Yerevan, with whole generosity of an
Armenian, brings down a stream of bright colours on judge of art. His
works are poetic, like the theater, where wonderful strange ladies
live according to their laws.

Abrahamian’s and Khalafian’s joint work is called in no other way but a
game as a result of what amusing and wonderful characters are created.

YEREVAN, SEPTEMBER 6, NOYAN TAPAN. Improvement works of the Yerevan
Park after Pushkin will be implemented with financial resources
allocated to the "Hayastan" All-Armenian Fund by Diasporan Armenian
benefactors Jean and Albert Boghossians. Fund Director Naira Melkumian
informed the Noyan Tapan correspondent about it. She mentioned that,
according to preliminary accountings, about 600 thousand U.S. dollars
are necessary for reconstruction works of the park.

N.Melkumian also assured that unlike other parks of Yerevan, there
will not be a great number of cafes here.

YEREVAN, SEPTEMBER 5 NOYAN TAPAN – ARMENIANS TODAY. The U.S. Embassy
is pleased to announce the completion of ,000 worth of renovations
to the National Cinematheque of Armenia. This project, as NT was
informed from the Public Relations Department of the U.S. Embassy in
Armenia, has allowed the Cinematheque to create a climate-controlled
space to preserve its collection of over 270,000 Armenian films,
audio recordings, and photos. The Cinematheque is the only existing
collection of Armenia’s film heritage, and houses the first Armenian
silent film, rare musical recordings, and historically significant
Armenian photos.

The U.S. Ambassador’s Fund for Cultural Preservation, through which
the U.S. Government provided the funding, works worldwide to assist
countries in preserving museum collections, ancient and historic
sites and traditional forms of expression. This program strives to
help preserve the cultural heritage of countries throughout the world
by providing small grants to support heritage preservation. Since
its creation in 2001, this program has supported almost 300 projects
worldwide, totaling .7 million.

YEREVAN, September 5. /ARKA/. During a meeting with Prime Minister of
Ajaria Autonomous Republic Levan Varshalomidze, Armenian Ambassador to
Georgia Hrach Silvanyan said that Armenia intended to open a consulate
in Batumi.

"This issue is being considered in the RA Foreign Ministry at present
and soon will get its positive solution", he said, according to the
RA Foreign Ministry Press and Information Department.

According to the press release, Varshalomidze informed that this year
35,000 Armenian tourists had visited Ajaria, at that it is expected
that by the end of September this number would reach 45,000 people.

He noted that in conditions of such flow of Armenia tourists the
issue of opening an Armenia consulate in Ajaria became a necessity.

Varshalamidze also mentioned the importance of attracting Armenian
entrepreneurs to the internal market of the country, taking into
consideration rich experience of Armenian business in the sphere of
production and processing of agricultural products.

During the meeting the sides spoke for the necessity of enlargement
and development of bilateral cooperation between the two countries, as
well as elaboration of new variants of mutually beneficial contacts. In
this connection Varshalomidze said that Armenia and Ajaria already
had active cooperation in the sphere of tourism.

He also said that the Mayor of Batumi would be given corresponding
instructions for organization of the work on surrounding an Armenian
church in Batumi by a fence and improving the territory around it.

On August 24, referring to Turkish sources daily Azg informed that the
reconstruction of Surp Khach church on the Akhtamar Island is over,
and Turkish prime minister Recep Tayyip Ordagan will officially open
it in October.

On September 1, Yeni Safaq newspaper of Turkey again touched upon
opening of Surp Khach, saying that the opening ceremony slated in early
October will be organized by the Turkish Culture Ministry and it will
be attended by representatives from Armenia and other 20 states as
well as Armenian Patriarch of Constantinople Mesrop II Mutafian.

The Turkish paper writes that Patriarch Mutafian will send a message of
reconciliation to Armenia and Turkey that will be relayed by Armenian
and Turkish Van FM radio stations. The radio stations themselves made
the suggestion of broadcast.
