Charles Aznavour, France’s ‘Frank Sinatra,’ Dies at 94

Hollywood Reporter
Oct 1 2018

Charles Aznavour, singer and actor, whose gestures and expressions conveyed the romance of Paris to worldwide audiences, has died.

An actor turned singer, he epitomized the French chansonnier: His songs were half-sung, half-spoken acclamations of love. A popular-song stylistic, Aznavour was a charismatic stage presence, despite his 5 ft. 3 inch height and pedestrian appearance. He headlined at such Parisian venues as the Olympia and was very popular with international audiences.

In 2005, he was chosen as Entertainer of the Century in an on-line poll conducted by Time magazine, topping such superstars as Elvis Presley and Frank Sinatra.

In a career that spanned roughly six decades, Aznavour wrote more than 1,000 songs and sold more than 100 million records. He often wrote songs that were considered immoral. Until 1960, 60% of his songs were banned from the French radio. He also wrote music with political or social themes, which he dubbed his “faits de societe” songs.

He was sung by all the great French musical stars, including Edith Piaf, his onetime mentor, and Maurice Chevalier.

As an actor, his most memorable role was as the barroom pianist with a troubled past in Truffaut’s Shoot the Piano Player.

When queried about which profession he preferred, singing or acting, he said, Each of my songs is a story. He called himself a “happy sad singer.”

In 1994, he signed a deal with EMI, which authorized re-release of his life’s recordings, which was packaged in a series of 30 CDs in 1996. He was feted with a cover on Billboard that year, rare for a foreign singer.

His first film Head Against the Wall won him the Crystal Star Award from the French Motion Picture Academy. He was also memorable as the marathon runner in The Games, and as a Jewish shopkeeper in Volker Schloendorff’s The Tin Drum.

He also performed in Atom Egoyan’s “Ararat, a film about the Armenian genocide. He was instrumental in erecting a commemorative statue for the victims in Paris.

As a singer, Aznavour packed French theaters and music halls. During a 15-year period in the ’60s and ’70s, only Elvis Presley, the Beatles and Elton John topped Aznavour in sales. He had a hit single, She, in 1974, which later was used covered by Elvis Costello in the romantic comedy Notting Hill, and was also used in Tadpole.

He was popular with mainstream U.S. audiences, as well: On U.S. television, Aznavour performed in a dual concert on TV with Liza Minnelli titled Love from A to Z.

He entertained at the Hollywood Bowl with a program of songs in French and English, accompanied by the Los Angeles Philharmonic. He finished with Yesterday When I Was Young, which he wrote.

Sad eyed and slight-framed, Aznavour won audiences by simple emotion. Time magazine once characterized his music: “His words are the plea of any poor devil, sung in any poor devil’s voice.”

“I sing about the ordinary things of life. My ideas are everyone’s ideas. My problems are their. …. So the audience accepts me. I am not a handsome, talented man. My voice is froggy, everything about me is common. They identify with me.”

In 1975, he starred in Claude Chabrol’s “Folies Bourgeoises, and, in 1983, starred in another Chabrol film, Le Fantome du Chapelier.

In U.S. films, he also played a wild hunchback in Candy and a villain in Harold Robbins’ The Adventurers.

Other film credits include: Tomorrow is My Turn, Taxi for Tobruk, High Fidelity and Paris in the Month of August. For 20th Century Fox, he played a European police chief in Sky Riders, which also starred James Coburn and Susannah York.

He was born as Shahnour Varenagh Aznavurjian on May 22, 1924 in Paris of Armenian parents. His father was a singer, his mother an actress. At age nine, he entered acting and at 11 left school. He was 16 when World War II began and survived by selling newspapers and sweeping streets. He teamed with actor Pierre Roche in a double act, and began song-write collaboration with Roche. He wrote songs for the likes of Edith Piaf and Maurice Chevalier.

Aznavour was a member of the jury at the Cannes Film Festival in 1986.

Most recent films include Le Comedien, Les Momes, Laguna, and Ennemis publics.

He was married five times and had five children: Seda, Patricia, Katia, Patrick and Mischa.

Tension between Azerbaijan-Armenia may see Arsenal’s Henrikh Mkhitaryan miss Europa tie vs Qarabag

Bengaluru, September 2: Henrikh Mkhitaryan could miss Arsenal’s important Europa League group stage fixture against Qarabag FK because of some political tensions between Azerbaijan and Armenia.

The 29-year-old Armenia international is growing as an important figure under new manager Unai Emery but for the Europa tie, the Spaniard might have to leave Mkhitaryan behind as he would not be given a visa.

Azerbaijan and Armenia are in conflict over the Nagorno-Karabakh region and relations between the countries worsened in 2016 when at least 200 people were killed in clashes for which the Azerbaijan government has prohibited any Armenians from entering the country.

Back in 2015 when Mkhitaryan was with Borussia Dortmund, he had to again stay back in Germany for a Europa League tie against Gabala, another Azerbaijan side, because of security concerns.

And now with Arsenal’s group stage game set to be scheduled for October 4 in Azerbaijan capital Baku, the attacker is expected to remain in London.

Arsenal coach Unai Emery however has now responded to the situation positively suggesting his side will reach out to authorities for a visa approval for the player and hope for a positive outcome.

“I would like that he can (travel) with us,” Emery said.

“And this problem, if we can together arrange (a solution), it’s better. But I have not yet spoken with him.”

Regarding the situation, UEFA has assured the club that they will try to resolve the issue and released an official statement on the matter.

“It is a standard procedure for UEFA to send letters of support to associations, clubs or embassies in order to obtain visa for players in order to be able to travel to another country and play in UEFA competition matches,” the governing body said.

Arsenal will face Qarabag in their second match in this season’s Europa League where Emery and his players will make a 5,000 mile round trip in between Premier League matches against Watford and Fulham.

Armenian-American entrepreneur Dan Bilzerian, known as the King of Instagram, has weighed in on the criminal charges brought against him by the Azerbaijani authorities for visiting Artsakh on the sidelines of his Armenia trip.

The “illegally visiting Artsakh” charge, as well as the infamous blacklisting practice, is being used by the Azeri government mostly against famous people, including politicians. The charges and the blacklist are criticized by human rights organizations.

Dan Bilzerian arrived to Armenia on August 27 with his brother Adam and his father Paul.

The entrepreneur, who is also an actor, was granted Armenian citizenship and then signed up for the military as required by law.

During the trip, the Armenian-American internet personality and professional poker player, visited Artsakh. Bilzerian, a gun enthusiast, fired various large caliber weapons, including an RPG, at a local shooting range. After arriving back to Yerevan he visited the Armenian Genocide memorial and then left the country.

Speaking to PEOPLE magazine, Bilzerian said that he will fight the charges.

Bilzerian, 37, told PEOPLE that he thinks the charges are politically motivated.

He also noted that he traveled to Artsakh with a group of other people, but he is the only one who was charged.

“They only issued the warrant for my arrest, and nobody else on the trip,” he says. “I think it’s because I am a public figure and they want to try to make an example out of me,” Bilzerian told PEOPLE.

PEOPLE reported that it has contacted the Consulate General of Armenia, which said that Armenia has contacted Interpol and urged them to dismiss Azerbaijan’s prosecution of Bilzerian as political. Azerbaijan had earlier requested Interpol to declare Bilzerian internationally wanted.

He told PEOPLE that he has “no interest in ever going to Azerbaijan.”

A day after internet personality and entrepreneur Dan Bilzerian departed from Armenia, Azerbaijan ‘s authorities launched a criminal case against the playboy millionaire known as the King of Instagram.

Azerbaijan launched the criminal proceedings against Bilzerian for visiting Artsakh, the country’s prosecutor’s office said.

Armenian goalkeeping legend Alyosha Abrahamyan has passed away at the age of 72.

Abrahamyan was a member of the FC Ararat team from Yerevan that won the USSR domestic championship in 1973 – the only Armenian team to capture the Soviet title.

Born on 28 August 1945 in Leninakan (now Gyumri), Abrahamyan took his first footballing steps in his native city, playing for the FC Shirak club in the mid-1960s.

Abrahamyan moved to Ararat, and he and his brother Furman – later to pass away in a road accident – were members of the Yerevan club’s team that finished second in the USSR top flight in 1971. He became renowned as one of the best goalkeepers in the USSR, and played a major role in Ararat’s superb league and cup “double” in 1973.

In 1975, Abrahamyan helped Ararat to another cup success. The 1974-75 season saw Ararat, inspired by Abrahamyan’s goalkeeping, reach the European Champion Clubs’ Cup quarter-finals before going out to Bayern Munich.

Abrahamyan ended his playing career in 1978, and immediately went into coaching. He was a long-serving goalkeeper coach for Ararat, FC Banants and FC Mika.

YEREVAN, AUGUST 24, ARMENPRESS. Armenian President Armen Sarkissian

both countries participated in the meeting.
As ARMENPRESS was informed from the press service of the Armenian

are based on mutual understanding and deep trust. Germany is a very
important partner for Armenia, but there is much room for expanding
our cooperation in different spheres. And of course, I want to express

168: Public should feel that it receives real benefits from the use of national wealth – PM Pashinyan

The Armenian government approved the action plan ensuring the implementation of the mining industry development concept.

During today’s session minister of energy infrastructures and natural resources Artur Grigoryan said the mining industry, as one of the key sectors of the Armenian industry, still doesn’t have a concrete policy and strategy which will enable to have a vision and implement concrete actions for ensuring the sustainable development of the field.

“It is expected to develop a mining industry development strategy which first of all requires some diagnostic studies. Based on the research, the directions for solving the issues revealed and the financial assessment for ensuring reforms will be mentioned in the strategic document”, the minister said.

Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said today the mining industry is one of the key sectors for Armenia’s economic growth. “One of our government’s key tasks is to change the model of the economic growth not because that the talk in this case relates to the sale of our subsoil. The economic growth formed as a result of the funds generated by the sale of that subsoil is not inclusive, in other words, the citizens of Armenia do not feel the impact of that economic growth on themselves. On the other hand, we need to take all measures to set a great control on the mining industry, making it more qualified and responsible and defining such operation rules that the public will really feel them: the national wealth is used so that the state and the public receive so much benefits as they really need to receive”, PM Pashinyan said.
