Armenian President Armen Sarkissian and wife Nouneh Sarkissian welcomed the Sheikha of Kuwait at the Presidential Palace.

Sheikha Hussah Sabah al-Salem al-Sabah and her delegation members watched the works displayed at the exhibition titled the Historical Heritage of the Armenian Photography.

The cultural tour was followed by a luncheon which was attended by Armenia’s deputy minister of education, science, culture and sport Arevik Anapiosyan, Director of Matenadaran Vahan Ter-Ghevondyan, Director of the History Museum Grigor Grigoryan, Deputy Director of the National Gallery Samvel Hovhannisyan.

“Armenia has been and remains as a crossroad of civilizations. By attaching importance to the dialogue of cultures we have always highly valued the Islamic culture and the civilizational values related to it”, the Armenian President said in his remarks. He highlighted the importance of organizing mutual exhibitions, in particular presenting the Armenian cultural heritage in Kuwait and the Islamic culture, art in Armenia.

In her speech the Sheikha of Kuwait noted in particular: “We visited Armenia at the invitation of Mrs. Nouneh Sarkissian. We are very happy to have such an opportunity to meet with His Excellency, President Sarkissian, as well as discuss the possibility to present the exhibits of our Museum here in Yerevan and host an exhibition from Armenia in Kuwait with many interesting scientists, academicians and our partners of Armenia”.

During the visit an agreement was reached to organize the exhibition of the famous al-Sabah Collection in Yerevan. The al-Sabah Collection consists of a wide range of important objects, which include books, manuscripts, ceramics, glass, metal, precious stones and jewelled objects, architectural ornaments, textiles and carpets, coins and scientific instruments. The objects on display represent the full chronological and geographic spread of the Islamic world.

RFE/RL Armenian Report – 09/10/2019

                                        Tuesday,
Armenian Parliament Plans Electoral Reform
        • Nane Sahakian
Armenia -- The Armenian parliament starts its autumn session, Yerevan,
September 9, 2019.
The pro-government majority in the National Assembly is planning wide-ranging
amendments to Armenia’s electoral legislation that could have important
implications for the next general elections.
“We started this process early on so that we are able to address
[election-related issues] one by one and in detail,” Hamazasp Danielian, the
coordinator of a parliamentary working group on electoral reform, said on
Tuesday.
Danielian, who is affiliated with the ruling My Step alliance, said that the
parliament majority specifically wants to amend the existing legal mechanism
for electing the Armenian parliament.
In the last two parliamentary elections Armenians voted not only for parties
and blocs but also individual candidates nominated by them. This electoral
system greatly helped former President Serzh Sarkisian’s Republican Party (HHK)
win parliamentary elections held in 2017. Wealthy HHK candidates earned
themselves and their party many votes at the time through vote bribes and abuse
of their administrative resources.
The system no longer favored the HHK after last year’s “Velvet Revolution.” The
former ruling party failed to enter the current parliament as a result of the
December 2018 snap elections which Prime Minister Nikol Pashinian’s My Step won
by a landslide. The polls were widely recognized as democratic.
Danielian told RFE/RL’s Armenian service that despite that election triumph the
existing mechanism remains “unacceptable” to the ruling bloc. He said it also
wants to amend other provisions of the Electoral Code regulating election
campaigns, formation of election commissions and appeals against vote results.
Danielian said the working group will also review another clause that bans dual
citizens from running for the parliament. He described the ban as
“controversial.”
With the next general elections not expected before 2023, the pro-government
lawmaker indicated that the ad hoc group will not rush to propose changes in
the Electoral Code. He said its more immediate priority is to draft amendments
to an Armenian law on parties. One of the main purposes of those amendments is
to ensure greater transparency in the financial operations of Armenian parties,
added Danielian.
Kim Kardashian To Attend Global IT Forum In Armenia

Armenia -- US television personality Kim Kardashian walks shortly after her
arrival in Yerevan, April 8, 2015
Kim Kardashian, the world-famous U.S. reality TV star of Armenian descent, will
participate in the upcoming World Congress on Information Technology (WCIT) in
Yerevan, organizers of the global forum announced on Tuesday.
The forum scheduled for October 6-9 will bring together 2,500 tech
professionals from more than 70 countries. It will be held under the aegis of
World Information Technology and Services Alliance, a worldwide consortium of
national IT associations.
The WCIT organizing committee in Armenia said Kardashian will be a “special
keynote speaker” and panelist at the forum. She will talk about “how
decentralized technologies have democratized the worlds of entertainment,
media, and journalism.”
“Kim Kardashian West is one of the most followed people on social media with
nearly 240 million followers. She is one of the most influential voices in the
world today,” the statement quoted the committee chairman, Alexander Yesayan,
as saying.
Armenia -- US reality TV star Kim Kardashian holds her daughter (C) in her arms
next to her rapper husband Kanye West (R) as they walk close to the Geghard
Monastery, April 9, 2015
Yesayan also described her as “an extraordinarily savvy and successful
businesswoman” who has “something important and interesting to say about the
world of social media entrepreneurship.” “In our opinion, a serious
conversation about this subject matter is not possible without her
participation,” he declared.
It will be Kardashian’s second trip to Armenia. The 38-year-old first visited
her ancestral homeland in April 2015 together with her husband, American rapper
Kanye West, and sister Khloe. She filmed several episodes of the reality series
“Keeping Up With The Kardashians” in Yerevan and other parts of the country.

Armenia hopes to use the upcoming WCIT conference to showcase its burgeoning IT
industry that employs some 15,000 engineers and generates more than 6 percent
of the country’s Gross Domestic Product. The sector is dominated by local
subsidiaries of U.S. tech giants like Synopsys, Mentor Graphics and National
Instruments and a growing number of homegrown software firms.
“From all over the world IT specialists, startup owners and investors
interested in the IT sector are already showing a strong interest in Armenia’s
potential,” Armine Udumian, a spokeswoman for the WCIT organizing committee,
told RFE/RL’s Armenian service. “We can already say that it’s a fact.”
“We will be hosting very important figures at the conference,” Udumian said,
adding that they will raise Armenia’s international profile.
Yerevan Rules Out Azeri Role In CSTO
        • Gayane Saribekian
KAZAKHSTAN -- Officials, including Russian President Vladimir Putin (C), attend
a meeting of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) in Astana,
November 8, 2018
Armenia would not hesitate to veto Azerbaijan’s possible attempts to gain a
special status in the Russian-led Collective Security Treaty Organization
(CSTO), a senior Armenian lawmaker said on Tuesday.
Ruben Rubinian, the pro-government chairman of the Armenian parliament
committee on foreign relations, made this clear as the National Assembly
debated the ratification of changes in the CSTO statutes agreed by the defense
bloc’s six member states: Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Armenia, Kyrgyzstan and
Tajikistan.
One of those changes introduces the status of a CSTO “partner” in addition to
that of an “observer,” which can be granted to other nations interested in
forging closer ties with the bloc.
Deputy Foreign Minister Shavarsh Kocharian emphasized that such decisions can
only be made by consensus. “If at least one of the member states is against,
then that status will not be granted,” he told parliamentarians.
Arman Babajanian, a pro-Western lawmaker who left the opposition Bright Armenia
Party last week, expressed concern over Azerbaijan’s possible attempts to gain
a special status in the CSTO. He said he is worried that Yerevan would find
itself alone in opposing such a bid.
“I don’t think things will get to a point where we will be alone,” countered
Kocharian.
Rubinian also dismissed the Babajanian’s concerns. “Azerbaijan will not have
the status of an observer or partner in the CSTO because Armenia will not
ensure consensus,” he said. “It’s as simple as that.”
“So I am again urging you to put aside the presumption of Armenia’s
wretchedness and impotence and to adopt the presumption of Armenia’s greatness,
sovereignty and ability to assert its interests,” added the senior member of
Prime Minister Nikol Pashinian’s My Step alliance.
Pashinian criticized Russia and Armenia’s membership in the CSTO when he was in
opposition to the former Armenian government. But he has repeatedly ruled out
his country’s withdrawal from this and another Russian-dominated bloc, the
Eurasian Economic Union, since coming to power in May 2018.
More Corruption Charges Brought Against Sarkisian’s Fugitive Brother
Armenia -- President Serzh Sarkisian (R) awards a medal to his brother Levon
Sarkisian, March 22, 2016.
Law-enforcement authorities have brought new and more serious corruption
accusations against a brother of former President Serzh Sarkisian who
apparently fled Armenia before being first indicted last year, it emerged on
Tuesday.
The Investigative Committee said Levon Sarkisian illegally intervened in a $250
million project to rebuild major Armenian highways in order to enrich himself
and two businessmen linked to him. It said he has been charged with bribery and
money laundering.
The charges carrying between six and twelve years in prison were leveled as
part of the Investigative Committee’s ongoing criminal inquiry into financial
abuses allegedly committed during the implementation of the so-called
North-South road project.
Last month, the law-enforcement agency filed fraud and embezzlement charges
against a top executive of a Spanish company that had been contracted by the
former Armenian government in 2012 to upgrade more than 90 kilometers of roads.
The first two reconstructed highways connecting Yerevan to the towns of Ararat
and Ashtarak were inaugurated in late 2015. The company, Corsan Corviam
Construccion, never rebuilt the remaining 40-kilometer-long road, however.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Investigative Committee claimed that
Corsan’s Armenian subcontractors were chosen not by the Spanish firm but Levon
Sarkisian. It said the latter awarded those contracts in return for kickbacks
promised by the subcontractors.
The director of one of those firms paid Sarkisian as much as half of its
anticipated profits, according to the statement. The committee did not name
names or specify the total amount of cash allegedly paid to Sarkisian.
It said that it has issued international arrest warrants for Sarkisian and the
two owners of another Armenian firm who it said colluded with the
ex-president’s brother in the “criminal scheme.”
Levon Sarkisian was already charged with “illegal enrichment” after tax
inspectors discovered in June 2018 that he and his two children hold almost $7
million in undeclared deposits in an Armenian bank.
Under Armenian law, such asset declarations are mandatory for high-ranking
state officials and their family members. This legal requirement applied to
Sarkisian because he worked as ambassador-at-large at the Armenian Foreign
Ministry until his elder brother was overthrown in the “Velvet Revolution” of
April-May 2018.
Sarkisian is thought to have left Armenia shortly before being indicted. He has
made no public statements since then. The head of Armenia’s National Security
Service (NSS), Artur Vanetsian, stated earlier this year that he now lives in
Lebanon.
Also prosecuted is Serzh Sarkisian’s second, more controversial brother,
Aleksandr. He was charged with fraud in February several months after the NSS
had his $30 million bank account frozen as part of a separate criminal inquiry.
Sarkisian, who is better known as “Sashik,” avoided arrest and was even allowed
to temporarily leave the country after agreeing to transfer the entire sum to
the state budget.
The former president has still not publicly commented on the criminal cases
against his brothers.
Press Review
“Aravot” reacts to Prime Minister Nikol Pashinian’s calls for an end to the
more than yearlong blockade of the roads leading to Armenia’s Amulsar gold
deposit. Pashinian argued, among other things, that a unilateral government
decision to revoke the Lydian International company’s mining license would be
fraught with political, economic and reputational risks for Armenia. “One may
certainly disagree with these points made by the prime minister but they must
be taken seriously given the fact that for Pashinian the support of the
majority of citizens is so dear and important that there have to be weighty
reasons for him to make statements to the detriment of his popularity,”
editorializes the paper. “The country’s leader is now undoubtedly faced with a
tough choice. The only sensible step he could probably take is … to give
citizens more detailed explanations as to what reputational risks threaten our
country.”
“Hraparak” singles out Pashinian’s argument that a ban on the Amulsar project
would leave his government under pressure to explain why it is allowing
continued operations of other mining companies in Armenia that use less
advanced technology and equipment. “This is where we could have a big
international problem if it turns out that we are taking a discriminatory
approach [against Lydian,]” warned Pashinian. The paper says that this is a
“convincing argument at first glance.” “Indeed, why has the Amulsar mine has
been closed and caused the economy huge damage for the past year if the
government has much more serious environmental concerns about the Teghut and
Zangezur mines?” it writes in an editorial.
“Isn’t this an acknowledgment of [Lydian’s] discriminatory treatment?”
continues “Hraparak.” “These are the kind of questions which should have been
raised immediately after the start of the Amulsar blockade, rather than one
year later, after Lydian has claimed to have been discriminated against.
Secondly, Pashinian’s second question remains unanswered: do the other mines
comply with [environmental] standards and Armenia’s laws?”
“Zhamanak” quotes George Kent, a U.S. deputy assistant secretary of state, as
telling the Voice of America that the United States wants Armenia to be
successful and prosperous and that the latter has a chance to become such a
country after last year’s “Velvet Revolution.” The paper says Kent’s remarks
come ahead of Pashinian’s upcoming visit to the U.S. It claims that although
Pashinian is not scheduled to meet with any top U.S. officials his trip is
“primarily perceived in the context of the U.S.-Armenian relationship and
agenda.”

168: US government demands that Armenia withdraw military group from Syria, Armenian defense minister categorically against withdrawal

Categories
Politics
World

And here we have it…According to 168.am, the US government recently demanded that Armenia withdraw its military group from Syria. A few days ago, the press issued an article stating that the Ministers of Defense and Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Armenia recently held a closed discussion with some ambassadors. Of course, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs refuted the meeting of the ministers, but according to the mass media, the topic of the meeting was the sending of a military group to Syria — something that was negatively perceived by the US government. Interestingly, this “message” was conveyed to the Armenian government right after Secretary of the Security Council of the Russian Federation Nikolai Patrushev paid a visit to Armenia on August 12-13, 2019. Rumor has it that Patrushev had recommended increasing the personnel of the military group.

According to 168.am’s sources, Permanent Representative of the Republic of Armenia to the United Nations Mher Margaryan told the Armenian authorities about the US government’s discontent and emphasized that the presence of an Armenian military group in Syria is having a negative impact on US-Armenia relations. According to the same sources, relevant US institutions also stated that failure to withdraw the military group will lead to consequences in US-Armenia relations and that Armenia must not use the equipment provided by the US government for demining in Syria. Minister of Defense Davit Tonoyan and Minister of Foreign Affairs Zohrab Mnatsakanyan considered the report of the diplomatic envoy. Mnatsakanyan said he was concerned about Armenia’s response to the US and recalled the speech that Nikol Pashinyan had given on August 17 of last year, announcing about an Armenian-Russian humanitarian project that will be unprecedented in the history of the newly independent Armenia.

During their discussion with the diplomat, both ministers tried to understand how Armenia can get out of this situation. Armenia may face problems with Russia and the United States. According to the same sources, Minister of Defense Davit Tonoyan was categorically against the demand to withdraw the military group. The decision of Nikol Pashinyan and his response to the demand of the Russians and Americans remains unclear.

Both the political opposition and experts had warned the government that Armenia would face foreign policy challenges after sending a military group to Syria under the flag of the Republic of Armenia. The former authorities were more flexible and were able to avoid such problems, maintaining the geopolitical balance. Pashinyan is compressing the circle around him on his own since he fails to observe all the warnings. The consequences are grave when a government takes uncalculated steps in order to maintain power, and those consequences are first and foremost grave for the country. By the way, let us not forget that the “boiler” of Amulsar (exploitation of the Amulsar gold mine) is “seething”.

Hours after this article was released, Minister of Defense of the Republic of Armenia Davit Tonoyan, in response to journalists, said the following: “The US government hasn’t demanded that Armenia withdraw its military group from Syria”, and Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Anna Naghdalyan said the following in regard to a discussion of Armenia’s government agencies under the title “US government demands that Armenia withdraw military group from Syria”:

“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has refuted the information several times already. Currently, an attempt is being made to circulate the information already refuted by a state institution with new details that are fictional and don’t correspond to reality, and by doing this, they create fake news composed of several layers. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs does not accept the nonsensical speculation of issues related to the security of the Armenian community of Syria and the assistance that is provided to the community for narrow and personal interests. I would like to go off topic and simply add that the government agencies operating in the security sector and their leaders always hold consultations over various issues, and the heads of those government agencies have made statements on that several times.”

Asbarez: VivaCell-MTS, Fuller Center Revamp House in Aghavnadzor

AGHAVNADZOR, Armenia—In Aghavnadzor, a village in Armenia’s Vayots Dzor region, a partially built home was renovated. Assisted by VivaCell-MTS and the Fuller Center for Housing Armenia, who have been partnering in the field of housing for several years, the Babayan home has been reconstructed.

The old house, built over 40 years ago, had never been renovated due to health and financial reasons. In 2006, the Babayan’s eldest son, Alik, was confined to a wheelchair due to an accident. It brought on both psychological and serious financial problems for the family. Alik and his younger brother, Artsrun, both worked, but could not renovate the house, as the problems were not few—semi-dark rooms lacking enough windows, dilapidated walls, a leaking roof, a balcony in ruins, a wooden wheelchair ramp, and more.

With the help of the house-building project, the Babayans have already completed the interior works of the house. A heating system will also be installed soon. With the willingness to help the family, the heads and staff members of VivaCell-MTS and the Fuller Center for Housing Armenia united to help complete the construction operations. The volunteers have come together to make decent housing possible. With joint efforts, a new wheelchair ramp was built to replace the old wooden one, and concrete work has been carried out. Having a comfortable home is no longer a dream for the family.

A scene from the renovation of the Babayan home in Aghavnadzor

“For me, having a wheelchair ramp is a necessity today, but the wooden ramp was not very safe. The concrete ramp for the wheelchair is the same as the paved road for a car. Thank you for helping to solve the most important issue for me,” said Alik.

“We ought to come together in order to make our motherland prosperous. We should be able to create something that each of our countrymen can make use of it. I feel blissful when, every time, in some place, we undertake construction works. The group of volunteers, like a circle of salvation, helps to finish the works quicker. I truly believe that inspires not only the people who are in need of a house, but also our colleagues themselves. Only humanity and responsibility enlighten the path of life. This is the way our colleagues think, otherwise they would not work here, as they consider the matter refers to themselves as well,” remarked VivaCell-MTS General Manager Ralph Yirikian.

“Every family has its problems and difficulties. In case of this family, it is important to note that endurance, sense of humor, and the desire to overcome difficulties have not left them, and there are people who are willing to support by giving a helping hand, to ease the burden of years of the family. This is the mission of the housing project,” said Fuller Center for Housing Armenia president Ashot Yeghiazaryan.

Armenia Reaches ‘Important’ Defense Agreements with Moscow

Russia’s Defense Minister Sergey Shoygu greets his Armenian counterpart Davit Tonoyan in Moscow

YEREVAN (Azatutyun.am)—Defense Ministers Sergey Shoygu of Russia and Davit Tonoyan of Armenia agreed on fresh arms deals at their latest talks held in Moscow, the Armenian Defense Ministry indicated on Sunday.

The ministry spokesman, Artsrun Hovannisyan, said they discussed, among other things, Russian-Armenian “military-technical cooperation,” an official euphemism for arms production and supplies.

“Davit Tonoyan and Sergey Shoygu reached a number of important agreements on the implementation of bilateral military-political, military and military-technical programs,” Hovannisyan wrote on his Facebook page. He did not give any details of those understandings.

Hovannisyan said the two ministers also agreed on the importance of continuing joint actions by their armed forces and “reinforcing the combat readiness” of Russian troops stationed in Armenia.

A statement by the Russian Defense Ministry likewise said “joint projects of military and military-technical cooperation” were on the agenda of Saturday’s talks but did not elaborate. It quoted as Shoygu noting “the strategic level of relations” between the Russian and Armenian militaries.

The Russian minister also praised more than 80 Armenian demining experts, army medics and other non-combat military personnel serving in Syria in close coordination with the Russian military.

Russian and Armenian defense officials signed unpublicized agreements on fresh Russian arms supplies to Armenian at the end of a five-day session of a joint commission on “military-technical cooperation” held in Yerevan in early June.

The session began four days after the head of Russia’s Rosoboronexport state arms exporter, Alexander Mikheyev, visited Yerevan and met with Tonoyan. The two men also held talks in Moscow in late April. Tonoyan said afterwards that Armenia will continue to acquire Russian weapons “very vigorously.”

In February, Yerevan confirmed the signing of a Russian-Armenian contract for the purchase of four Sukhoi Su-30SM fighter jets to the Armenian Air Force. The multirole jets are due to be delivered by the beginning of 2020. The Armenian Defense Ministry plans to buy more such Russian warplanes in the following years.

Russia has long been the principle supplier of weapons and other military equipment to the Armenian army.

Asbarez: Blessing of Grapes at Glendale Adventist

A scene from the annual blessing of grapes at Glendale Adventist on Wednesday, August 14

GLENDALE—In celebration of the feast of the Assumption of the Holy Mother of God, the annual blessing of grapes was conducted at Glendale Adventist Hospital. Ardak Demirjian.

Glendale Adventist President, Alice Issai, delivered welcoming remarks and Senior Chaplain, Al Garcilazo, the invocation.

The Vicar General conveyed his greetings and message. He stated that, “Prayer is a powerful spiritual tool which also impacts our physical bodies,” adding, “we have come today to pray for healing and to comfort all those who are ailing.” On the occasion of the feast of the Assumption, he urged all to beseech the intercession of the Holy Mother of God before her Son Jesus Christ. He concluded by blessing all those present and encouraging them to remain resolute in their faith, in their devoted service and in their worthy mission.

YEREVAN, AUGUST 10, ARMENPRESS. Prime Minister of Armenia Nikol Pashinyan participated in the opening ceremony of texture cotton factory in Maralik city, Shirak Province. ARMENPRESS reports the PM toured in the factory and got acquainted with its works on August 10.

Co-founder of the factory Gevorg Gasparyan said that their thread manufacturer factory will consolidate the entire textile around them.

“Numerous small factories will start to work, ensuring lots of jobs”, he said.

Minister of Economy Tigran Khachatryan emphasized that the Government has granted privileged conditions to the factory provided by the law.

“The factory plans to manufacture 300 tons of thread monthly, but if there are companies that will create more demand, it will be possible to expand the production volume’’, the Minister said.

Over 4 million USD has already been invested in the factory, which will create 150 jobs with an average salary of 297 thousand AMD. It has been built in the territory of the former similar factory, from which nothing had remained. In the past, during the Soviet times, 1700 people worked there.

The main markets will be Armenia and Russia.

Istanbul-Armenian MP Garo Paylan, representing the pro-Kurdish Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP), took to Twitter to comment on the attack against the historic Armenian church in Germush District of Urfa, Turkey by treasure hunters.

The MP shared the photos of the damaged church where treasure seekers have dug deep holes for gold and jewels, Ermenihaber reports.

“If only you knew that the real treasure is the church itself … Thousands of churches in the country have been destroyed and continue to be destroyed by thieves and vandals,” Paylan said.

Led by Spight, Homenetmen basketball team prepares for Pan-Armenian Games

For years, Zareh Avedian and Zareh Zargaryan led a Glendale men’s basketball team that represented the Homenetmen Ararat chapter in the Pan-Armenian Games.

The Hoover High graduates took on the bulk of the scoring, rebounding and leadership roles as the locals traveled to Armenia in hopes of bringing home a gold medal for the first time since 2003.

This year, Avedian and Zargaryan — known as “Big Z” and “Little Z” — have passed the torch to Andre Spight, one of the best players the area has produced in the past two decades.

Spight, who is from Burbank, has accepted the responsibilities that come with being the squad’s top player, and is expecting nothing less than a championship when Glendale travels to Armenia for the seventh annual Pan-Armenian Games.

The opening ceremonies will take place Tuesday and the closing ceremonies are scheduled for Aug. 17.

“Anything short of a championship is a disappointment,” said Spight, a 24-year-old who was named the best player of the FIBA European Championship for Small Countries in 2016, when he led Armenia to the title. “I have high expectations for this year’s team. We have the best team and the best coaching staff. We do it the best over here. We have good people, and a good staff. I think it’s our time to win this right now.

“I feel like my role is to be the best player on the court, off the court. Just to help these guys. To lead us to victory every time.”

Avedian, whose 49-point, 20-rebound championship-game performance propelled Glendale to the 2003 title, has been awed by Spight.

“Andre is the person who can control the game, take over the game,” Avedian said. “When you want to win a championship, you need to have a person who can take over the game. At the end of the day, he has been a Division I basketball player. He has played on the international stage. He has played in the G League of the NBA. He is going to get a lot of attention. He’s going to open up a lot of shots for us.

“We all know he’s the guy. At the end of the day, we have to change our roles. Give him the ball and let him create for everyone else.”

Zargaryan, who was a part of the 2015 Glendale team that took bronze, agreed with Avedian’s assessment that Spight’s presence will open opportunities for his teammates, which include local grads Narbeh Ebrahamian (Crescenta Valley), Teo Davidian (Hoover), Samson Injigulyan (Hoover) and Azad Galustian (Glendale).

“He can take over the scoring load with ease,” Zargaryan said. “He can light you up in a half, in an entire game or in a quarter so quickly that you can’t keep up. The guy is explosive.”

Barsegh “BJ” Karamanian has taken over the coaching responsibilities for the Glendale team, and with the collection of talented shooters, he plans on playing an up-tempo game.

Karamanian said he will find out his team’s schedule and opponents when they arrive in Armenia on Monday.

“We have very unique talent on the team,” Karamanian said. “We’ve adopted a philosophy that we want to get quick baskets, within the first six or seven seconds, and then if that’s not there, get organized and go through some rotations.”

Karamanian will likely start Avedian and Zargarian in the front court, with Ebrahamian, Davidian and Spight taking on the guard and small forward positions. All five presumed starters played at the collegiate level.

Avedian didn’t think he would be on the Glendale team after his last run in 2015. He’s now 38, a husband and a father to Andrew, a 14-month-old who might follow in his dad’s footsteps. But he’s taken on the role of being a role model to the younger players on the team, as well as with his son.

“I didn’t think I would be playing four years ago,” Avedian said. “I am still playing at a competitive level. I am still able to run around with these young guys. At the end of the day, it’s basketball, it’s fun. If you don’t have to stop, why stop?”

Sanitek CEO says company ready to make $4 million investment

Sanitek Armenia, the Yerevan waste management company, has no political affiliation, Sanitec CEO Nicholas Tawil stated during an online news conference on Friday, commenting on accusations and ‘rumors’ about a possible link of the company with the former authorities.

He stressed the company’s key concern is to properly serve the city and its residents and to strengthen the company’s position to provide those services.

Tawil said that regardless of the unstable situation and persistent efforts of local authorities to exhaust the company’s resources, the company continued its work, hoping to come to an agreement with the city administration.

The CEO said the disastrous state of Nubarashen landfill, the active construction works in Yerevan and the increase in the number of tourists have made it difficult for the company to operate.

The company proposes the Yerevan residents instead of repeatedly pointing out their failures to join efforts to discuss the situation and find solutions.

He said the company is ready to invest $4 million to purchase new waste collection trucks and containers, acquire 500 containers annually, modernize the fleet, introduce corporate management principles to ensure transparency and accountability.
