Imagine what Pashinyan may concede to satisfy Aliyev’s appetite – Larisa Alaverdyan

“The ruling regime in Armenia is well trained and instructed in line with the most primitive formulas,” Armenia’s former Human Rights Defender Larisa Alaverdyan told a press conference on Thursday. In her words, the ruling force comprises of a group of people, a fifth column, which has obtained some knowledge over the time.

“Today, we have that group of people in power, which is not only ashamed of its deeds, but is proud of own achievements since they are not accountable to people who are concerned with preservation of national values, but to those who have brought them to power,” said Alaverdyan.

In the words of the former Ombudswoman, efforts to improve Armenian-Turkish relations were on the agenda of all leaders of Armenia.

“During the tenure of both the second and third presidents there were discussions on the topic. The Armenian people never opposed to the idea of having normal relations with neighbors. However, because of Turkey[s policy to dictate its rules, we have never agreed to that,” said Alaverdyan, adding: “There is an agreement now. I am confident there are circles in the Armenian public who are serving to that fifth column. Others do not fully perceive the existing reality. The level of civic conscious we have today does not comply to the complexity of problems we are facing.”

Alaverdyan suggested centers with the most vicious geopolitical ideas are extremely active in Armenia.

“We have descended the zero level of internal resistance. We have lost our ideological, health and physiological immune. When we repeatedly voice about the need for the authorities be held responsible, they are scared of the changes. The think about the responsibility they may face in the future which makes them not to leave.”

In Alaverdyan’s words, there is another reason for the authorities not to leave. “They have a plan to sign two more agreements, one with Turkey, the other  – with Azerbaijan. I suppose the plan is there. It means Azerbaijan wants to sing peace pact with Artsakh within its borders. Apart from that, they have chosen Syunik province as another target. Azerbaijan’s appetite for Zangezur is well-known. By the way, Azerbaijan has territorial claims to all of its neighbors, including Turkey,” said Alaverdyan.

She also blamed Pashinyan for the fact of having numerous captives in Azerbaijan. “Aliyev also knows about Pashinyan’s guilt and will always make use of that fact. One may only guess what Aliyev may demand against the prisoners. It could be territories and agreements. We see only the top of the iceberg,” said Alaverdyan.

As to unblocking of communication routes, the speaker pointed to the complexity of the process which  has a direct impact on security. “Imagine what citizen Pashinyan may concede to satisfy Aliyev’s appetite,” Alaverdyan concluded.

Congressman Valadao named as Armenian Caucus co-chair

PanARMENIAN.Net – Representative David Valadao (D-CA) – a longstanding legislative champion of Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh) and Armenian issues on Capitol Hill – has been named as the incoming Co-Chairman of the Congressional Caucus on Armenian Issues, reports the Armenian National Committee of America (ANCA).

“The ANCA welcomes Congressman Valadao’s leadership on the Congressional Caucus on Armenian Issues, remarked ANCA Chairman Raffi Hamparian. “The fact the Congressman Valadao was named to the powerful House Committee on Appropriations earlier this month – which controls all federal spending – will make him an even more important ally for the U.S. humanitarian aid package we are seeking to secure for the heroic people of Artsakh,” the ANCA Chairman added.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, January 27, Rep. Valadao cited the importance of strengthening the U.S.-Armenia-Artsakh relationship. “Armenia is a nation so many of my constituents know and love,” said Congressman Valadao. “During my time in Congress, I introduced several resolutions formally recognizing the Ottoman Empire’s deportation and extermination of over two million Armenian people and, after years of Armenian-American advocacy for this cause, the House and the Senate finally passed H.Res. 296, Affirming the United States record on the Armenian Genocide. However, my fight on behalf of my Armenian-American constituents must continue. Armenians living in Nagorno Karabakh recently faced attacks from Azerbaijani forces in violation of their decade-old ceasefire agreement. This kind of aggression is unacceptable and must end immediately. I am committed to working with my colleagues in Congress on this issue and other issues of importance to the Armenian-American community as co-chair of the Congressional Caucus on Armenian Issues. We must continue to advocate for the Armenian people and encourage the new Administration to maintain and strengthen relationships between the United States, Armenia, and Artsakh.”

Congressman Valadao, who returned to Congress in 2021 after a tightly contested election against incumbent TJ Cox, has a long history of championing issues of special concern to Armenians and their allies in Fresno and across California’s Central Valley. In 2017, he traveled to Artsakh, over objections from the State Department, and spearheaded passage of the Valadao Amendment appropriating life-saving humanitarian aid to de-mine Artsakh. Upon his return to the U.S. House, he was appointed to a post on the influential Appropriations Committee.

This implies destruction of the enemy, perhaps through weapons. Yes, I am consciously threatening, let the National Security Service detain me,” he said.

Badasyan is charged with making public calls for seizure of power, violation of territorial integrity of forceful overthrow of constitutional order.

Armenia plans to extend operations at Metsamor unit

Jan 20 2021

Armenia plans to extend the service life of its nuclear power unit in Metsamor beyond 2026 and has not abandoned plans to build a new unit, ARKA news agency reported on 14 January, following Cabinet approval of the government’s new energy strategy to 2040.

The Metsamor plant comprises two Russian-built 376 MWe VVER reactors which started operating in 1976 and 1980, respectively. Both units were taken off line in 1988 due to safety concerns regarding seismic vulnerability, although they both continued to operate and had not sustained any damage in a major earthquake in the region earlier that year. Unit 2 was restarted in 1995, and is subject to ongoing safety improvements. Unit 1 is now being decommissioned. Unit 2 accounts for 39% of total electricity generation in the country.

“The presence of a nuclear power plant in Armenia’s power grid will allow us to diversify our energy resources, not to increase the country’s dependence on imported natural gas, as well as to reduce the volume of emissions,” the strategy document states, according to ARKA. “The government remains committed to its policy of having a nuclear power plant in the country’s generating capacity. In this context, it should be noted that the option of maximizing the life of the existing nuclear power plant is a guarantee of the development of the system at the lowest cost,” it adds.

The current investment programme to extend the operating life of unit 2 will be completed by 2023, by which time a total of USD330 million will have been invested, and the operating life of the unit will be extended until 2026. If the operation of unit 2 beyond 2026 is proved to be safe, then it will continue until 2036, which will require additional investment of about USD150 million.

Asbarez: ANC Cyprus Successfully Spearheads Effort to Rename Talaat Pasha Street

January 19,  2020

ANC of Cyprus

The Armenian National Committee of Cyprus spearheaded an effort in the city of Pafos, urging city officials and the its council to rename a street that was called Talaat Pasha, the architect of the Armenian Genocide.

The ANC of Cyprus expressed its gratitude to the Pafos mayor and city council for taking swift action in response to its and the community’s appeal, and decided to rename Talaat Pasha street to Dikaiosýni, which means justice.

The Cyprus ANC first discussed the matter in July, 2020, and deemed it insulting that a street in Cyprus bear name of the Armenian Genocide architect as an honor to the murderer.

Furthermore, the Cyprus parliament, on the centennial of the Armenian Genocide, approved a measure that criminalizes the denial of the Armenian Genocide. As such, honoring of the Genocide’s perpetrator would become a legal matter.

The ANC of Cyprus expressed its gratitude to Pafos Mayor Phedon Phedonosi, who without any hesitation or doubt, allowed justice to prevail.

Orphanage where Hrant Dink grew up will be turned into Armenian Youth Center

The Armenian Orphanage in Tuzla where the slain journalist Hrant Dink grew up will be turned into Camp Armen Youth Center, Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM) President Ekrem Imamoglu said in a twitter post.

Mayor Imamoglu said that the plan studies have started after the Municipality voted unanimously in 2017 to rebuild the camp as youth center.

The orphanage was built in 1962 by the Gedikpaşa Armenian Protestant Church, as a former building on the site could not host the increasing number of Armenian students arriving from various parts of Anatolia.

Known as the orphanage where Hrant Dink, a Turkish-Armenian journalist who was murdered in 2007, and his wife, Rakel Dink, studied, it was expropriated by the Turkish state in 1987 on the basis of a 1936 bill preventing minority foundations from acquiring property.

Although the Turkish government signed a historic decree in 2011 to return property taken away from minority foundations, the camp was omitted, alongside hundreds of other properties.

Fatih Ulusoy, the land owner, had initially tried to demolish Kamp Armen in May 2015, but the controversial plan was later shelved as Ulusoy said he would donate it to the Gedikpaşa Armenian Protestant Church and School Foundation.

Efforts to demolish the camp received widespread attention once the news broke on social media. The demolition was subsequently stopped when many people, including activists and leading figures from the Armenian community, rushed to the area to protest the demolition work.

Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality’s municipal council on May 12 unanimously accepted the construction plan regarding the orphanage, which will be rebuilt taking the original building into account. The Kamp Armen area was taken under “Social and Cultural Facility Area” category in line with the Gedikpaşa Armenian Protestant Church and School Foundation’s will.

The prominent Armenian-Turkish journalist, was shot dead at the age of 52 in broad daylight by an ultranationalist outside his office in Istanbul’s Sisli district on Jan. 19, 2007.

Ogun Samast, then a 17-year-old jobless high-school dropout, confessed to the killing and was sentenced to almost 23 years in jail back in 2011.

The case grew into a wider scandal after it emerged that security forces had been aware of a plot to kill Dink but failed to act.

While crowds gather each year at the spot that Dink was killed to commemorate him, this year’s commemoration will be held online due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
