OBAMA MANAGED TO JOIN AMERICAN SOCIETY

The victory of the U.S. President Barack Obama mostly depended on his
promises of changes and new projects, said the Director of Armenian
Center of Strategic and National Studies Richard Giragosian.

`Obama managed to mobilize and join the American society which has
been left far from politics. Obama is not only the first youngest
President of the U.S. but he is the first Afro-American President,’
said Mr. Giragosian.

According to Giragosian American society was happy to accept the
message of changes and they managed to overcome the problem of racism
dependence.

According to the political expert, Armenia could learn three basic
things from America ` `differentiation between business and politics’,
`need of true political parties’ and `the role of opposition.’

Turkish prosecutor says apology petition for Armenian Genocide legal
11.03.2009 22:29 GMT+04:00

/PanARMENIAN.Net/ An Ankara prosecutor who argues that the Armenia
apology petition campaign launched late last year is not illegal has
asked the Justice Ministry to issue a written directive to that
effect, Hurriyet Daily News reports. The "I apologize" campaign was
launched Dec. 15. Though it has drawn harsh criticism within Turkey,
approximately 29,000 people, including many intellectuals and
journalists, have signed the petition, which reads in part: "My
conscience does not accept the insensitivity showed to and the denial
of the Great Catastrophe that the Armenians were subjected to in
1915."

A complaint was lodged against the organizers of the petition
campaign. After a preliminary inquiry, Ankara Prosecutor Nadi
Türkaslan said the petition is protected as a freedom of
expression and thus the organizers could not be prosecuted.

On March 3, a court overturned the prosecutor’s finding, saying that
criminal proceedings could be initiated against the organizers. The
decision allows prosecutors to seek the permission of Justice Minister
Mehmet Ali Å?ahin to launch an investigation.

Charges made against the organizers will be based on penal code
Article 301, which criminalizes insulting Turkishness and also
requires ministerial approval to start any proceedings. Prosecutor
Türkaslan, in a letter to the Justice Ministry, called for a
directive to annul the ruling and asked that the case be sent to the
Supreme Court of Appeals.

establishment of independent legal system in RA,â?? RA
Ombudsman Armen Harutyunyan specified in his 2008 Report on Human
Rights Protection. â??Despite the reforms implemented, RA
legal system has no tendency for development. Recent surveys
registered a low level of trust toward legal system among RA

â??We need time to promote and strengthen the democracy in

HSBC analysts predict 0% economic growth in Armenia in 2009
07.03.2009 17:03 GMT+04:00

/PanARMENIAN.Net/ As HSBC group predicts, Armenia may have 0% economic
growth in 2009, said Tim Slyther Executive Director General of CJSC
`HSBC Bank Armenia’ at the press conference. He reminded that the year
2008 ended in 5-505 % economic growth fall.

As to the inflation expectations, the executive director general said
that, in his opinion, the inflation in Armenia will reach 10-12% in
2009.It is conditioned by two factors: the price increase on imported
goods resulting from the dram devaluation and the tariff increase on
public utilities (gas, water, electricity). He also mentioned that the
high inflation rate will be conditioned by lower transfers from
Commonwealth countries.

The HSBS group analysts’ forecasts regarding Armenia are optimistic,
and they forecast a 0% domestic gross product by the end of the
current year, whereas in Kazakhstan -2,5% fall, the Ukraine-9%
fall. As Tim Slyther said, Georgia will be in an advantageous position
as it expects assistance from CoE like in previous year.

Obama will visit Turkey "in a month or so"
07.03.2009 18:10 GMT+04:00

/PanARMENIAN.Net/ U.S. President Barack Obama will visit Turkey "in a
month or so," his Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said in Ankara
Saturday.

Clinton was speaking at a joint press conference with Turkey’s Foreign
Minister Ali Babacan after talks with the country’s leaders aimed at
repairing relations damaged over the Iraq war.

"President Obama will be visiting Turkey within the next month or so,"
she said. "The exact date will be announced shortly. We are just at
the beginning of planning this decision reached yesterday."

Questioned by a journalist, Clinton said she could not confirm when or
where would be the occasion for Obama’s promised address in the
capital of a major Muslim nation.

Earlier she had visited the mausoleum of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk,
founder of the modern Turkish state, and had talks with Prime Minister
Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Babacan.

The discussions focused on bilateral relations, the Middle East, Iraq,
Afghanistan and the fight against terrorism, a statement by Erdogan’s
press service said.

The statement called the United States a "friend and ally".

A senior US official earlier said on condition of anonymity Obama’s
administration had "a chance to rebuild on a better footing after the
most acute problems accumulated in the Bush administration have
finally been taken off" the table.

Turkey, a NATO member, refused in 2003 to open a northern front
against Iraq from its territory for U.S.-led invasion forces,
provoking a chill in relations between Ankara and Washington, AFP
reports.
