The recently published results of a Gallup International poll claim 38.8 percent of respondents in Armenia believe Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan should remain in the post of head of government, while 43.6% believe that he should resign.

The survey was conducted by MPG (Marketing Professional Group) – the only organization in Armenia that officially represents GALLUP International in the country.

The last such survey was conducted in November 2020. Then, according to the director of MPG Aram Navasardyan, 35% demanded the prime minister’s resignation. At the same time, the prime minister retains the highest rating among other Armenian politicians.

  • ‘Sargsyan’s Armenia’ vs ‘Pashinyan’s Armenia’ – which is better?

The PM’s rating is higher than former presidents

The respondents who participated in the poll were asked to rate politicians on a scale of 1 to 5.

Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan had the highest rating with 2.8 points.

After him, incumbent President Armen Sargsyan has the highest rating at 2.3 points.

Former presidents of Armenia received lower scores:

  • first president Levon Ter-Petrosyan – 1.7
  • second president Robert Kocharian – 2
  • third president Serzh Sargsyan – 1.7

Among the oppositionists, the leader was the head of the Prosperous Armenia party, prominent businessman Gagik Tsarukyan – 2.2 points. The leader of Bright Armenia Edmon Marukyan scored 1.8 points, the head of the Motherland party, the former head of the National Security Service Artur Vanetsyan – 1.5, the representative of the ARF Dashnaktsutyun – 1.6.

Vazgen Manukyan, a candidate for the post of prime minister put forward by the opposition parties united in the Movement for the Salvation of the Motherland also scored 1.6 points.

“The previous authorities are to blame for the defeat in the Karabakh war”

32% of respondents blame the former authorities of Armenia for the defeat in the second Karabakh war. Nikol Pashinyan is considered guilty by 28.8%.

16.1% of the respondents consider the participation of Turkey in the war as the reason for the defeat, and 4.4% blame certain officers of the Armenian Ministry of Defense and the NK Defense Army.

Despite the results of the war, there were also those who believe that the Armenian side did not suffer defeat. This is 10.2% of the respondents.

30.7% of respondents believe that Armenia needs to return Shushi and Hadrut and 7 regions around NK – that is, return to the situation that was before the start of the war in Karabakh in the fall of 2020.

“3.1% noted that it is necessary to recognize the territorial integrity of Azerbaijan, surrender Artsakh and end the conflict,” said director of MPG Aram Navasardyan.

Most are in favor of snap elections

At the end of last year, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan suggested that the country’s political forces begin consultations on holding early parliamentary elections in 2021.

This was his vision of a way out of the political crisis that arose in the country after the second Karabakh war.

However, already in February 2021, the ruling parliamentary faction My Step announced that there would be no elections.

The decision was justified by the fact that “the proposal of the Prime Minister to hold early parliamentary elections did not receive a positive reaction from the parliamentary opposition, there is no request for early elections among the general public.”

According to the results of the poll, 37.1% of respondents consider the holding of parliamentary elections to be “unequivocally necessary”, and 21.3% consider it “rather necessary”.

13.6% and 19.7%, respectively, voted for the options “rather not needed” and “not needed at all”.

Respondents also answered a question about the format of early elections. 41.2% of those polled believe that the elections should be held under the leadership of Nikol Pashinyan, while 28.2% are against the idea. 7.9% are for the idea of having the elections be held under the leadership of an interim government proposed by the opposition.

Mikayel Minasyan: Armenian, Azerbaijani officials plan to discuss steps to integrate remains of Artsakh into Azerbaijan

News.am, Armenia
Feb 18 2021

Former Ambassador of Armenia to the Vatican Mikayel Minasyan wrote the following on his Telegram channel:

“All us Armenians see that the war is not over. We understood that defeat is not suffered once. The lack of self-love of Nikol and his team and their flirting with the enemy aren’t letting the Armenian people come to their senses, self-organize and try to start from scratch.

Every day Nikol and his team continue to humiliate all us Armenians. Azerbaijan and Turkey make threats, but Nikol’s team talks about regional cooperation. Azerbaijan and Turkey hold new military exercises, but Nikol talks about the opening of borders. This has been going on for the past four months. Pasinyan and his capitulation team continue to be humiliated, deliver new territories, destroy the positions in the negotiations and any prospect for fixing the situation. They hope to be able to gain at least something by playing with Aliyev in order to help maintain power.

One of the steps of this game is the upcoming meeting of Director of the National Security Service of Armenia Armen Abazyan, Arayik Harutyunyan, Rustam Muradov and Chairman of the State Security Service of Azerbaijan Ali Nagiyev. The secret meeting that Armen Abazyan agreed on during his recent visit to Moscow will take place over the next few days on the line of contact, not far from Mataghis. Abazyan, Harutyunyan and Nagiyev are planning to discuss “infrastructure-related issues” and, in essence, the actions to integrate the remains of Artsakh into Azerbaijan.

We Armenians need to understand that this is not just another meeting, but the implementation of the plan for elimination of Armenian statehood for which Nikol is still in power. Armenia’s willingness to be humiliated only boosts the desire of Turkey and Azerbaijan to gain territories, concessions and guarantees from Nikol. One person can’t and must not cruelly humiliate his own homeland and people and remain unpunished. This means that the hour of historic, legal and moral liability is close, very close.”

Opposition leader announces new rally at Yerevan square on Friday

Panorama, Armenia
Feb 11 2021

Vazgen Manukyan, the joint candidate of Armenia's opposition Homeland Salvation Movement for interim prime minister, announced a new rally at the Liberty Square in Yerevan on Friday, February 12.

In a statement on Thursday, he urged people to “wake up” from the “hypnotic state”.

“The authorities have decided that from now on it is required to have the consent of Armenia’s national security agencies to cover various topics in some parts of Syunik Province.

“Yesterday it became known that there is a secret document, according to which the borders of Syunik and the communication links passing through it are determined to the detriment of Armenia. It’s yet unknown what other secret and illegal documents have been signed. After some time, we will wake up one day to find out that we have lost Syunik as it was the case on the night of November 9, 2020,” the opposition leader said.

“Armenia is getting smaller every day; our territories are controlled by foreigners. On our way to change the situation, we became convinced that we do not have police, because it, serving the current authorities, serves the interests of Azerbaijan and Turkey.

“Future generations will curse us. We will have an enslaved part of the people in this area, which is still called Armenia, while the rest will be scattered all over the world, becoming refugees,” Manukyan said, urging Armenians to “wake up and take hold of the country’s future”.

“Do not wait for the steps of political parties! All national political forces stand with you, but it’s for you to decide the future of the country.

“I urge you to gather at the Liberty Square tomorrow, February 12, at 3pm, to decide what further steps we have to take. We are losing our homeland,” he stated.

Touching upon ecology, the minister stated that the government will make only balanced decisions that will be in the interests of Armenia.

Turkey, Azerbaijan hold joint military drills next to Armenian border

AHVAL News
Feb 3 2021

Turkey and Azerbaijan are holding joint military exercises this week in Turkey’s eastern province of Kars, bordering Armenia.

The Turkish Defence Ministry posted a video on its Twitter account displaying two combat helicopters hovering around a Turkish flag flying above the castle of Kars city.

The military drills, set to last until Feb.12, will enhance cooperation and coordination of joint operations and assess the capabilities of Turkish and Azeri units’ in harsh winter conditions, the state-run Anadolu reported two weeks ago.

Turkey and Azerbaijan held joint military exercises in the Azeri capital of Bakü and in the country’s Nakhchivan region in August. It preceded an armed conflict between Azerbaijan and Armenia over the disputed region of Nagorno-Karabakh, which began in September. A Russia-brokered truce in November ended the fighting.

A joint Russian-Turkish ceasefire monitoring station has begun operating in Aghdam in Nagorno-Karabakh, the Turkish Defence Ministry announced on Saturday. Aghdam was handed over to Azerbaijan by Armenia on Nov.20 as a condition of the truce.
