Ruben Ghazarian, a 9th grader at the Armenian Academy at Blair High School in Pasadena, California, has been named a 2022 Finalist in the Congressional App Challenge, Asbarez reports.

This competition is the most prestigious prize in student computer science. The Challenge seeks to inspire and innovate efforts around STEM, coding, and computer science.

Congresswoman Judy Chu, representative for California’s 27th congressional district, announced the five finalists and winner on December 16th. A total of 27 students from Congresswoman Chu’s district entered the competition.

Ghazarian has been coding for over two years and was excited for the opportunity to compete in this challenge. His app, entitled “Resto-Math,” took over two months to develop, which he did in between his studies at school.

Ruben is the son of Pasadena residents Mr. and Mrs. Garabed and Lucine Ghazarian.

According to Ghazarian, he designed the app to help students learn math in an entertaining way, without being repetitive. He hopes to one day have a career in business, computer science, engineering, or robotics.

Azerbaijani press: UN court rejects Armenia’s lawsuits against Azerbaijan

By Vafa İsmayilova

The UN International Court of Justice has rejected Armenia's main lawsuit on the immediate return of the so-called prisoners of war, Trend reported on December 7.

The court also rejected Armenia's lawsuit to close the Military Trophy Park in Baku, Azerbaijan.

At the same time, Armenia's claim on the investigation of war crimes by Azerbaijan was not approved.

The court also ruled that the Armenian state should take urgent measures against groups and individuals making violent calls on ethnic grounds in Armenia.

The failure to satisfy Armenia's claim on these three issues stems from the timely and substantiated submission of evidence to the court by the Azerbaijani side.

The International Court of Justice (ICJ) is the principal judicial organ of the United Nations. It was established by the United Nations Charter in June 1945 and began its activities in April 1946.

The court is composed of 15 judges elected for a nine-year term by the General Assembly and the Security Council of the United Nations. The seat of the Court is at the Peace Palace in The Hague (Netherlands).

The court has a twofold role: first, to settle, in accordance with international law, through judgments which have binding force and are without appeal for the parties concerned, legal disputes submitted to it by States; and, second, to give advisory opinions on legal questions referred to it by duly authorized UN organs and agencies of the system.

Asbarez: At OSCE Forum, Yerevan Highlights Azerbaijan’s Aggression, Invasion of Armenia

Foreign Ministers of OSCE member-states gather in Stockholm on Dec. 2

A year after Azerbaijan’s aggressive attack on Artsakh and the ensuing ceasefire agreement signed on November 9, the situation in Karabakh, as well as along the Armenia-Azerbaijan border remains tense, Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan said during an address to the OSCE Ministerial Council meeting in Stockholm, Sweden on Thursday.

“Since May 2021, Azerbaijani armed forces have breached the borders of Armenia. Up to now, they maintain and continue strengthening their illegal presence on the sovereign territory of Armenia,” he explained.

“Through its aggressive actions, Azerbaijan is flagrantly violating the United Nations Charter and the principles of the Helsinki Final Act. Needless to say, Azerbaijan’s actions also violate its obligations under the trilateral statement of November 9 on the cessation of all hostilities,” added the foreign minister.

He also stressed that Azerbaijan continues to capture and hold captive Armenian servicemen and civilians.

“Not only does Azerbaijan continue to ignore the calls of the international community for the immediate and unconditional release of all Armenian prisoners of war and civilian hostages, but on a number of occasions, most recently on November 16, its armed forces captured more military personnel in the course of its attack on the territory of the Republic of Armenia,” said Mirzoyan.

No pretext can justify these violent actions, Mirzoyan said, adding that “the continued presence of Azerbaijani armed forces on the territory of Armenia is a destabilizing factor in the region.”

He voiced hope that the November 26 trilateral meeting organized by the Russian Federation would pave the way for taking certain measures toward the de-escalation of the situation in the region.

“The use of force has never been a way to peace in general and in particular in our region.  The use of force can de-freeze dormant conflicts for a certain period of time, but they will get frozen again once there is no negotiated and peaceful solution. War can come as a unilateral choice but peace always requires consent of all sides,” Mirzoyan said.

He stressed that Armenia is willing to achieve lasting stability in the South Caucasus and is ready for negotiations to achieve that.

“The sooner Azerbaijan embarks on the resumption of the peace process, the better will the chances be to achieve comprehensive and durable settlement in our region. The definition of the status of Nagorno-Karabakh based on the right to self-determination, the safe and dignified return of the displaced Armenian population throughout the entire territory of Nagorno-Karabakh should be substantive issues of negotiations. Equally, the resolution of pending humanitarian issues such as unconditional return of all Armenian POWs and other captives, inquiry into the cases of enforced disappearances, protection of cultural heritage, necessitates the strong engagement of the OSCE and its relevant mandates,” Mirzoyan emphasized.

“With this in mind, Armenia will further contribute toward the resumption of a full-fledged NK peace process under the auspices of the OSCE Minsk Group Co-Chairmanship in close cooperation with all OSCE Minsk Group Co-Chair countries,” he concluded.

Reserve Officers’ Movement demands immediate release of war veteran Ashot Minasyan

Panorama, Armenia

The Reserve Officers’ Movement once again condemns the “unlawful and anti-national” activities of the current Armenian authorities related to the arrest of Artsakh war veteran, Colonel Ashot Minasyan (a.k.a. Ashot the Iron), demanding his immediate release.

Minasyan, the commander of the Sisakan volunteer unit that took part in two Artsakh wars, was arrested on Wednesday on charges of plotting to kill Nikol Pashinyan and seize power along with several other political and military figures last year. He was first arrested in November 2020 to be released shortly afterwards.

"Not abandoning their treacherous plans to cede Syunik to our longtime enemy, the authorities have been keeping the leaders of Syunik communities in custody for months. Now they have arrested another patriotic man ready to fight against the enemy, commander Ashot Minasyan, to achieve their ultimate goal,” the movement said in a statement on Wednesday.

“The Reserve Officers’ Movement demands the immediate release of both Ashot Minasyan and the Syunik community heads, as well as an end to political persecution against all opposition figures," reads the statement.
