Azerbaijani press: President Ilham Aliyev: Azerbaijan made very serious steps to resolve Nagorno-Karabakh conflict in 2018

1 January 2019 02:50 (UTC+04:00)

Baku, Azerbaijan, Jan. 1

Trend:

Azerbaijan made very serious steps to resolve Nagorno-Karabakh conflict in 2018, said Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev in his congratulation to the Azerbaijani people on the occasion of the Solidarity Day of World Azerbaijanis and New Year.

“We remain committed to our principled position on the settlement of the Armenia-Azerbaijan Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. Our position is fair. Our position is fully consistent with the norms and principles of international law. Nagorno-Karabakh is ancient Azerbaijani land. The whole world recognizes the territorial integrity of our country,” said President Aliyev.

President Ilham Aliyev noted that the Armenia-Azerbaijan Nagorno-Karabakh conflict must be resolved only within the territorial integrity of our country.

“The resolutions of the UN Security Council must be fully implemented and the occupying forces must unconditionally withdraw from our lands.

I can say that Azerbaijan made very serious steps to resolve this conflict in 2018. As you know, the regime of criminal and corrupt junta that which remained in power in Armenia for 20 years has collapsed and this represents a complete failure of Armenia’s aggressive policy against Azerbaijan. I can also say that our thought-out, focused and principled policy against Armenia has yielded fruit. We have isolated Armenia from all regional and international projects, and our share in the collapse of the Armenian economy is quite large. I think there is a new situation for the settlement of the conflict today,” President Aliyev said.

Azerbaijani President expressed hope that 2019 can be a breakthrough year in this area.

“Along with this, of course, I think that our strong military potential is a key factor for the resolution of the conflict. In recent years, we have significantly enhanced our military power. Today, the Azerbaijani army is among the strongest armies in the world. This year’s military parade in our country shows our strength, the great potential of strong army. The Azerbaijani army has the most modern weapons and equipment, a very high combat potential, and we proved this again this year. The Azerbaijani army has carried out a successful operation in the Nakhchivan direction of the Azerbaijani-Armenian border and is now in control of 11,000 hectares of land. The takeover of strategic heights enables us to exercise full control over important communications and routes passing through Armenia.

We will continue to increase our military power. We want to settle the Armenia-Azerbaijan Nagorno-Karabakh conflict peacefully, and our participation in the negotiations is a clear proof of that. However, everyone knows and should know that the military factor plays a special role for the solution of the conflict, and we will increase our military power further,” President Aliyev said.

SENATE CONFIRMS BY VOICE
VOTE AMBASSADORIAL NOMINEES FOR ARMENIA AND AZERBAIJAN

Senate Foreign Relations Committee Ranking Member Robert Menendez Reiterates
Key Concerns

WASHINGTON,
D.C.
– Yesterday, the United States Senate confirmed by a voice vote
Ambassadorial nominees Lynne M. Tracy and Earle D. Litzenberger to represent
the United States in Armenia and Azerbaijan, respectively, reported the
Armenian Assembly of America (Assembly).

Last month, during the Senate Foreign Relations
Committee (SFRC) business meeting on the nomination, Ranking Member Robert
Menendez (D-NJ) explained his support for both candidates, as well as the
importance of strong U.S.-Armenia relations.

“Armenia and the Caucasus region will continue
to be vital to regional and global security. According to the OSCE, Armenia’s
elections over the weekend met international standards. I look forward to
supporting the government’s efforts to build strong democratic institutions, a
vibrant Armenian economy, and oppose any efforts to violate Armenia’s sovereignty,”
Ranking Member Menendez said.

During Ambassador-designate Tracy’s nomination
hearing she promised to support Armenia’s “remarkable” democratic
reforms. As to questions at the hearing by SFRC Ranking Member Menendez and
Senator Ed Markey (D-MA) on the Armenian Genocide, she agreed that “1.5
million Armenians were deported, massacred, or marched to their death in the
final years of the Ottoman Empire” in 1915, but fell short of properly
categorizing the killings as a genocide.

“Throughout my time in the Senate, I have
advocated for an honest accounting of the Armenian genocide.  I believe we have a moral imperative to
recognize the atrocities that were committed against the Armenian people. Ms.
Tracy’s experience in Russia and Central Asia positions her to help navigate
U.S. policy in this critical time. I support this nomination, but expect to
work closely with Ms. Tracy on how she will encourage an honest acknowledgement
of the Armenian Genocide, support Armenia’s ongoing efforts to ensure accountable,
citizen-responsive governance, and support efforts to reach a peaceful
settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict,” he added.

During the SFRC business meeting, Senator Menendez
also noted the importance of safety in Artsakh (Nagorno Karabakh), and his
expectations for the U.S. Ambassador selected to be the representative in
Azerbaijan.

“I support Mr. Litzenberger’s nomination and
expect to have close and continuing dialogue with him on how he will urge the
Azeris to step back from any threatening behavior that could disrupt the line
of contact in Nagorno Karabakh, support respect for human rights, and support
efforts to reach a peaceful settlement of the Nagorno Karabakh conflict,”
Senator Menendez said.

The hearing for Ambassador-designate Litzenberger
occurred in October, wherein he restated the U.S. position condemning violence
along the line of contact, which undermines the peace process and violates the
1994 cease-fire agreement.

“We appreciate the important issues raised by
Senators Robert Menendez and Ed Markey during the confirmation process.  We look forward to working with the new
Congress to ensure robust assistance to further Armenia’s democratic
development,” Assembly Executive Director Bryan Ardouny said.

Established in 1972, the Armenian Assembly of America
is the largest Washington-based nationwide organization promoting public
understanding and awareness of Armenian issues. The Assembly is a non-partisan,
501(c)(3) tax-exempt membership organization.

No gas price hike for consumers, Armenia’s acting PM says

2018-12-31 18:24:10

The gas price will not change for consumers in Armenia, acting Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan has said.

Speaking through Facebook Live, Pashinyan said he talked to Russian president Vladimir Putin on phone twice to discuss the gas price.

“We have reached an agreement at least for the foreseeable future,” he said.

According to the acting PM, there are two chains in the gas supply chain. The first is the supply of gas by Russian Gazprom to Gazprom Armenia. The second stage is the delivery of gas to consumers.

“Gazprom will review the price for Gazprom Armenia, and some rise in the rice is expected,” Pahinyan said, adding that they will return to the issue in the future, if necessary.

“The issue of gas will always be on the negotiating table. We’ll do our best to ensure that the price remains unchanged to consumers,” he noted.

Nikol Pashinyan said no other topics were touched upon during the conversation with Putin.

Art: Feodosia National Art Gallery plans digitization of Aivazovsky’s artwork

The artwork of the Russian-Armenian great marine artist Hovhannes Aivazovsky kept at the Aivazovsky National Art Gallery in Feodosia, Crimea, will be digitized, TASS news agency reported. As the Minister of Culture of Crimea Arina Novoselskaya said, the museum will be reconstructed to have a museum district with the expected opening in 2022.

“The collection of the artwork is not yet digitized yet it is planned,” Novoselskaya told the agency, adding no time frame for the completion of the digitization is set yet.

The Aivazovsky National Art Gallery is a national art museum in Feodosia. In 1845, Ivan Aivazovsky acquired a plot in the outskirts of Feodosiya, on the very seashore. He decided to build a house with a big art studio and dreamed to establish a school of painting there. The same year, 1845, the first exhibition comprising 49 works was opened in a part of the house.

The Art Gallery in Feodosiya was the first one-painter museum in the Russian Empire and has grown very famous even in Aivazovsky’s lifetime. Besides the fact that unique pictorial canvases were exhibited here, prominent musician and actors – marine painter’s friends – performed on the stage specially mounted in the gallery.

To note, Aivazovsky is considered one of the greatest marine artists in history. Baptized as Hovhannes Aivazian, Aivazovsky was born into an Armenian family in the Black Sea port of Feodosia and was mostly based in his native Crimea.

Former RA Prime Minister Karen Karapetyan submitted an application to withdraw from the Republican Party. The news was confirmed by Ruben Tadevosyan, the chairman of the RPA organizing committee, in a conversation with VERELQ.

“The application has been accepted,” he said.

According to the press, the 7,000 members who joined the party together with Karen Karapetyan will leave the RPA.

To remind, after the Velvet Revolution, Karen Karapetyan practically froze her membership in the RPA, and later announced at the meeting of the General Assembly of the RPA that she would resign from the position of the first vice-president of the Republican Party.

In October, it became known that he received an offer to join the board of directors of the Russian state oil company Zarubezhneft.

Keeping up with the Berejiklians

Stellar, Australia

Keeping up with the Berejiklians

Interview NAOMI CHRISOULAKIS

Three sisters crowd the kitchen, joking and jostling for space as their mother instructs them on the correct preparation of classic Armenian dishes. But this scene isn’t unfolding for the benefit of a lurking reality-TV camera crew; instead, we’re in an unassuming house on Sydney’s North Shore, and the most famous sister – who is handing her mother lemons from her garden – isn’t known for her social-media prowess, but for her politics.

“I have to admit I do watch [Keeping Up With The Kardashians],” Gladys Berejiklian, 48, says with a droll laugh, good-naturedly acknowledging the parallel between herself and Kim Kardashian’s famous Armenian family.

“We’re similar in that we’re close to each other and we’re involved in each other’s lives.” But reality-television drama? No, the New South Wales Premier insists, just the “normal” drama. “We’re so comfortable with each other. We fight all the time – in a good way.” Born in Sydney to Armenian immigrants Krikor and Arsha, Berejiklian and her two younger sisters Rita and Mary didn’t speak English until they started school. It was a choice made by her parents in an attempt to preserve their heritage – both sets of grandparents had been orphaned in the 1915 Armenian genocide.

It worked: Berejiklian is still involved in the local Armenian community, despite holding one of the most demanding jobs in the country as NSW Premier. She’s only the second woman to hold the position, and she’ll be fighting to retain it at the upcoming state election in March of next year.

As she sits down in her study to talk to Stellar, Berejiklian admits she can only hope to have any time off over Christmas as she prepares to go to the polls, but insists she’s used to it. “I don’t get much down time. I count the amount of hours I get off in a week, as opposed to the other way round, but I accepted that as I took on this job. You don’t know how long you’ve got the job for, and it’s an incredible privilege so you make the most of it while you’ve got it. The only time I do get down time is when I come home; even if it’s late, I need to wind down.

I read something or, more often than not, watch a TV program I’ve taped.” There’s not usually much time for cooking, but the family gathers every Saturday at Krikor and Arsha’s – although Arsha never lets her daughters bring anything, and sends them home with leftovers. “Glad”, as her family calls her, is usually last to arrive and first to leave.

“My dad’s started to time it,” she says. “You know, ‘We’re glad you turned up, but how long are you going to stay for today?’ That’s the first question I get asked.” Her sisters keep her in line, too. “I get into trouble if I don’t do something as much as they do. Growing up, I used to be the goody-two-shoes that did everything, and now it’s shifted. They carry more of the load than I do, unfortunately.” Today, though, they’re full of praise for their big sister. “I don’t know how she gets around to meeting everyone’s needs,” says Mary, the youngest of the clan. “As busy as she is, she will just drop everything if it means her helping me or my sister, or my mum or my dad. I haven’t seen her for this week, which feels massive.” As well as responsibility, she says there’s lightness in her big sister, too. “People don’t realise how funny she actually is. She has got the quirkiest sense of humour, but she keeps it to herself until you get to know her.” She has needed it in recent months, as the federal Coalition faced leadership chaos and her Victorian counterparts got walloped at last month’s state election. Whatever she worries about privately, publicly she maintains she’s focused solely on her own challenges, not those of her Liberal Party colleagues in Victoria and Canberra. “I think you will always need to run your own race, and in New South Wales we’ve always stood on our own,” she tells Stellar. “My attitude is: ‘Keep focusing on what citizens want you to do on their behalf.’ And that’s always been my mantra, no matter what role I’ve had.” She might not be worrying about the Victorian Liberals, but they’re paying attention to her. Louise Asher, a former Member for Brighton who served as a minister and former Liberal Deputy Leader, first met Berejiklian when she was a “highly impressive” Young Liberal.

“She stood out from the crowd even then,” Asher says. “The fact that Gladys is Premier of Australia’s largest state tells female MPs in Victoria that the Liberal Party is prepared to vote for a woman as leader. She is an inspiration.” Whether the voters of NSW will be prepared to back her in March is another question. But for her part, being a woman doesn’t have much to do with it.”I just focus on doing my job well, and I look forward to the day where women in leadership roles are not a novelty,” Berejiklian says. “So my contribution to that effort is to do a good job regardless as a Premier, not a good ‘female Premier’.”

Pashinyan and Putin discussed the gas price issue in St. Petersburg. minister

Nikol Pashinyan and Vladimir Putin discussed the issue of gas supply from Russia to Armenia and its price in St. Petersburg. Garegin Baghramyan, Acting Minister of Energy Infrastructures and Natural Resources of RA, said this in a briefing with journalists, confirming the rumors.

He noted that at this stage the negotiations are still ongoing because there is no agreement.  Baghramyan also mentioned that if the negotiations are not completed by the end of the year, the contract will be automatically extended. “The contract will be extended until the negotiations are completed. As long as there is no agreement, what we have today will remain,” he emphasized.

Accordingly, it is too early to talk about the gas price today. The minister only mentioned that, naturally, “they are negotiating to reduce the price, no one is negotiating to raise it.”

To the question whether the price of gas will be maintained after January or will it become more expensive, the minister answered: “Yes, it will be preserved. Until the negotiations are completed, the price will be maintained.” He emphasized that an increase in the gas price in January is excluded.
