Armenian State Symphony Orchestra gets standing ovation and multiple encore requests after Hamburg performance

YEREVAN, MARCH 30, ARMENPRESS. The Armenian State Symphony Orchestra delivered a concert March 28 in Hamburg’s ElbphilharmonieHall. The Orchestra and cellist Narek Hakhnazaryan performed SymphonyNo.2by Aram Khachaturian and the Cello Concerto of contemporary composer Eduard Hayrapetyan.

Sergei Smbatyan, artistic director and conductor of the Orchestra, told ARMENPRESS that it is very important to perform modern and classic Armenian music in Elbphilharmonie, one of the world’s most demanded and popular halls.

“Eduard Hayrapetyan composed a Cello Concerto specially for this concert. It is wonderful when foreign audiences see the rich and unique traditions of Armenia in the music area”, he said.

“All tickets were sold out several months before the concert, we received a standing ovation after the performance and the audience was demanding an encore for several times”, he said.

Sports: Arsenal players struggle to spell Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s name (video)

PanArmenian, Armenia

PanARMENIAN.Net – Armenian midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan‘s new Arsenal teammates have learned quickly how to play alongside the midfielder.

Learning how to spell his name, though, is a bit more tricky, ESPN FC says.

Rob Holding and Ainsley Maitland-Niles both failed miserably at that task when put to the test by the Gunners captain Per Mertesacker in a video to help launch a new “Word Match” game in the Junior Gunners app.

Despite Mertesacker’s best attempts to help out, neither Holding nor Maitland-Niles could figure out just where to play the H in the Armenian’s name.

They could spell the name of fellow January signing Konstantinos Mavropanos, however, although they came up short on several other different names of club legends and Arsenal Women players.

The Armenia international swapped Manchester United for Arsenal in January as part of a deal which saw Alexis Sanchez move in the opposite direction.

The 29-year-old has already provided six assists and scored in consecutive games, including his maiden Arsenal goal in the 2-0 over AC Milan in the Europa League.

Moscow refuses to answer London-based ultimatum on “Scripal Case”

The Russian side will not respond to the London-based ultimatum of the “Scripal Case”, as long as Britain did not fulfill its obligations under agreement on the prohibition on chemical weapons. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said commenting on former Russian spy Sergei Scripal’s and his daughter Julia’s nervous system to be poisoned with parasitic substances.

“Before presenting an ultimatum, Great Britain must fulfill its obligations under international law, in this case, an agreement on the prohibition of chemical weapons,” Lavrov said.

It should be reminded that earlier in Russia it was reported about slaughtering the substance of poisoning and stopping production of this substance.

‘Kids should take interest in Hindi; it’s a beautiful language’

‘Kids should take interest in Hindi; it’s a beautiful language’

New Delhi

New Delhi, March 9 — Many might think that the interest of Hindi language is waning among the youth, but Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) ambassador Anita Verma begs to disagree. On the contrary, she is making sure that people learn and love the language worldwide. Beginning her career as a teacher in Municipal Corporation of Delhi schools, it was her love for Hindi that made her promote the language in different spheres.

She wrote books for children, worked in media, and taught students the value of mother tongue. Verma’s passion was noticed by ICCR and she was sent to the First Republic of Armenia as a Hindi teacher. “When I went to Armenia, I realised that students were learning 40 different world languages, but not Hindi. It was hard to instil interest in people who couldn’t differentiate between Hindi and Hindu,” says Verma. Verma’s first batch comprised 10 students.”My tenure in the Yerevan State Linguistic University was supposed to be of two years, but with the rise of interest, it was extended by a year. My students embraced the language and took keen interest in Indian culture. They translated my poems in Armenian and Russian. They even learnt to drape saris. Such was the effect of Hindi,” she says, adding that it was no less than an achievement that “At the end of my term, I had over 50 students. I also created a dictionary which had translation among three languages – Hindi, English and Armenian. I taught them stories from the Ramayana. It’s a great feeling to see them sing our national anthem!” For her contribution in Yerevan, Verma was presented the International Foreign Language Teaching award by the ministry of Armenia. The embassy of India published her poetry book for children and translated it to Armenian. Thereafter, she went on to teach Hindi in University of Bucharest for two years. “My articles on Romania got published in local newspapers, too,” she says. While she has done her bit for her mother tongue, Verma doesn’t want to stop here. She says, “I want kids to take more interest in their mother tongue. Hindi is a beautiful language and I’m always up for teaching it.”

The son of Armenian immigrants and Donald Trump’s idol: Fortune

PanArmenian, Armenia
Feb 24 2018

PanARMENIAN.Net – One of Donald Trump’s idols in the business world may come as a surprise. He was little known, and liked it that way. He was a daring pilot during World War II. And on the playing fields of deal-making, he was the future president’s polar opposite—the very embodiment of self-discipline, humility and grace under pressure.

Fortune unveils an article about Kirk Kerkorian, a self-made billionaire and fellow hotel developer, who started out as a penniless eighth-grade dropout from California before becoming a Hollywood movie mogul, a Las Vegas casino magnate, and one of America’s richest men. His largely unheralded charitable giving also made him one of the country’s most generous tycoons.

In many ways, he was the un-Donald, yet Trump regarded Kerkorian as business royalty. When a New York Times columnist was calling Kerkorian—then in his late 80s—“the god of all deal makers,” Trump was likewise calling him “the King” and publicly declared: “I love that guy.”

The stories of the two fellow billionaires have obvious parallels, but perhaps more interesting than that, is how vastly they diverged in their approaches to achieving remarkably similar versions of the modern American dream.

By the time Kerkorian died at age 98 in 2015, he owned most of the major hotels and casinos on The Strip. But his name was on none of them. And though he transformed the American gambling mecca, Kerkorian’s name never appeared on a street sign, a park site or so much as a private parking spot.

The Las Vegas skyline does, however, have the giant gold letters T-R-U-M-P atop the 64-story Trump International Hotel.

The reticent Kerkorian avoided media engagement. He declined most interviews and lived by his own rule against divulging anything about his personal or business interests. The first Kirk commandment was: don’t talk too much. His second was: never talk about yourself.

Trump was notorious for self-promotion well before entering politics. Even before becoming the nation’s Tweeter-in-Chief, he sometimes posed as his own public relations guy to pass along all kinds of personal and business information to the press. In 1989 he even talked his way onto a Forbes list of billionaires, only to be summarily dumped for inflating his net worth—found to be “in hailing distance of zero” upon review by magazine editors.

Though fiercely competitive, Kerkorian carried no grudges. Even after intense negotiations, Kerkorian’s business competitors often ended up as social friends. His closest associates said he never had a bad thing to say about anyone. Trump’s response to his Forbes list demotion was also typically Trumpian—accusing deceased magazine publisher Malcolm Forbes of “finally getting back at me from the grave.”

Kerkorian studiously avoided both the trappings of celebrity and any involvement in political activism. But he also admired, perhaps even envied, Trump for his easy command of audiences. The naturally shy son of illiterate Armenian immigrants was almost paralytic about public speaking. “I wish I could talk like Trump,” he told friends.

And, had Kerkorian lived to see it, he almost certainly would have been impressed with the audacity of Trump’s 2016 presidential bid. For Kerkorian, a heroic wartime aviator and seemingly fearless gambler—who once risked a million dollars on a single roll of the dice, who wagered his fortune more than once on major Las Vegas developments, and who favored big bets, win or lose—seeking the White House would definitely have qualified as a praise-worthy whale of a big bet.

Antananarivo: Madagascar is delighted with Armenia’s economic achievements

ARMINFO News Agency, Armenia
 Friday
Antananarivo: Madagascar is delighted with Armenia's economic achievements
 Yerevan February 23
Marianna Mkrtchyan. Madagascar is delighted with the economic
achievements of Armenia. This February 23 in Yerevan at a joint press
conference with Armenian Foreign Minister Edward Nalbandian, the
Minister of Foreign Affairs of Madagascar Henri Rabari-Ndzaka said.
"Yesterday during the meeting with the Prime Minister of Armenia, I
expressed my admiration for the achievements recorded by the Armenian
economy after the crisis of 1996. I believe that Armenia's economic
opportunities are in tune with the theme of the business forum that
Yerevan plans to hold in the margins of the 17th OIF Summit in October
this year, "the minister said.
Rabari-Nzaka also added that Armenia is a member of the integration
project with 180 million market (Eurasian Economic Union-Ed.), Which
opens new opportunities for Madagascar.
At the same time, he believes that Armenia and Madagascar can actively
interact in the sphere of tourism. According to him, Madagascar's 5000
km coast, rich flora and fauna, and the Armenian side could contribute
to increasing Madagascar's recognition for its citizens. According to
him, Armenia and Madagascar have a serious potential for implementing
joint projects.
Rabari-Ndzak also informed that in May this year the President of
Madagascar Eri Radzanarimampianina will pay a state visit to Armenia,
and the details of the visit are already being worked out.
In turn, Nalbandian stated that the data on the volume of mutual trade
turnover between Armenia and Madagascar are disappointing. "This is
one of the reasons for our decision to make active efforts to
stimulate cooperation." Relations between our countries were
established back in Soviet times, then we actively interacted, so the
current level of cooperation can not satisfy us. "We need to take
active steps to give a new impetus to our cooperation ", the Armenian
Foreign Minister said.
Speaking about the forthcoming summit of Francophonie in Yerevan,
Nalbandian informed that the event will be held under the motto "To
live together." According to him, in Armenia they know firsthand what
it means to live together, because by coincidence of historical
circumstances, today Armenians live in more than 100 countries of the
world, create and develop. He also expressed the hope that an
important document will be signed at the summit of the International
Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, the Yerevan Pact,
if its members are approved by the organization, which will become one
of the fundamental documents of the organization. "It is also planned
to hold a business forum that will promote the promotion of trade and
economic relations within the framework of the MOF and create a
network for businessmen of the member countries of the Francophonie,"
Nalbandian said.

Paylan for President

Garen Yegparian

BY GAREN YEGPARIAN

Unfortunately, we can’t have Garo Paylan as president of the Republic of Armenia, he would be just the kind of decency the doctor ordered for the grossly afflicted political-electoral, economic, and perhaps even societal life of the RoA. But for now, let’s set aside the pending parliamentary-presidential election in Yerevan and move to…

… Ankara, Turkey, the country he could be the president of, since he is a citizen there, a member of parliament, a leading figure in his political party, and a modest human being.

Paylan is rational, inclusive in his worldview, proud of his heritage and himself (you can see it in the way he carries himself), has been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize, and is fundamentally a good citizen. Most importantly, he is not afraid to speak truth to power, and inspires hope that he would continue his principled ways once in office.

Should he run and in a very unlikely turn of events get elected, he would be the first Armenian in over 110 years (there are rumors that Bloody Sultan Abdul Hameed II was the child of an Armenian in his father’s harem) to hold that type of executive position in the part of the world where Armenians used to be heads of state for centuries on end before the arrival of the Turkic invaders.

Garo Paylan could bring peace, integrity, and international respect to Turkey for the first time in … EVER. He would be well positioned to implement his party’s (HDP) fairly enlightened policies given Erdoğan’s power grab in the form of constitutional “reform” the centralized much power in the office Turkey’s president.

You may think that it is far too soon to discuss Turkey’s presidential election, 20 months out (November 3, 2019, with a runoff two weeks later between the top two vote-getters if no one secures 50%+1 of the vote). Currently, only one candidate has formally declared his candidacy, Tuna Bekleviç, with Erdoğan himself and Meral Akşener widely expected to run as well. The latter, described as the grandmother who could unseat the sultan, is perceived as a real threat to the incumbent, Erdoğan. For a more extensive list and discussion of candidates, see the wikipedia article about this topic.

Given that there is great turmoil in Turkey’s polity, why not Garo Paylan? Imagine the good he would do for all citizens of Turkey, the improved relations that would follow with neighboring countries when Turkey ceases its Ottoman-based delusions of grandeur and overlordship, and the doors that would open for restoring justice to Armenians, Assyrians, Greeks, Kurds, and all other nations which have suffered at the belligerent hand of Turkish rulers for centuries.

Think about the alternatives mentioned above. One, Erdoğan, is a proven egomaniac who has wrought much havoc in the whole region and upon his own citizens, never caring about the bloodshed he has caused. Another, Akşener, hails from the right wing sector of Turkey’s political spectrum (although in fairness, there are Armenians involved in her party, too). The third and only formally declared candidate, Bekleviç, has an interesting political history, and, to the very limited extent I could learn about him (not much seems available in English), an interesting possibility, but one who probably won’t get very far.

So, why not Garo Paylan? He would be the best president at this time for Turkey, the world, and Armenians.

Does anyone know how we might go about constituting a “Draft Garo Committee” with the legal confines of Turkey’s electoral system?
