Azerbaijani press: Hungary interested in including Azerbaijani gas in country’s future energy mix – ambassador (INTERVIEW)

BAKU, Azerbaijan, Mar. 3

By Nargiz Sadikhova – Trend:

The bilateral relations between Azerbaijan and Hungary that are both strategic and friendly, provide strong, solid foundations for developing our economic cooperation, Hungarian Ambassador to Azerbaijan, Viktor Szederkényi told Trend.

“Just before the pandemic, we managed to hold the 7th session of the Joint Intergovernmental Commission on Economic Cooperation in February 2020, which determined the priority areas for the upcoming years. Despite the difficulties, we were able to maintain the level of the trade turnover between our countries last year, but obviously, there is still a huge potential to expand bilateral trade, so it could reflect the high political importance we attach to the partnership with Azerbaijan,” he said.

Last year, Szederkényi noted, Hungary managed to complete its biggest ever investment of nearly $1.5 billion in Azerbaijan.

“The Hungarian MOL Group became the third-largest stakeholder in the ACG oil field and the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan pipeline. I believe this cooperation can expand to new areas. Also, Hungarian pharmaceutical brands, like Gedeon Richter and EGIS had been well known in Azerbaijan for decades and the popular HELL energy drinks are Hungarian products as well,” Szederkényi said.

He also added that Hungary usually aims at joint projects that bring mutual benefits.

“Hungarian companies are already engaged in the agriculture and IT sectors in Azerbaijan, we also focus on areas, like smart/green urban solutions, energy efficiency, and water management, where Hungarian companies offer innovative technologies and know-how that we are ready to share,” Szederkényi added.

Szederkényi noted that in many areas, the two countries can build on existing or previous cooperation, including in the energy sector which is of strategic importance for both our countries.

“Besides our investment in the oil industry, Hungary is interested in including Azerbaijani gas in our future energy mix. This was reiterated by Minister Szijjártó at the 7th ministerial meeting of the Southern Gas Corridor Advisory Council on February 11. We welcome the successful completion of the Southern Gas Corridor which has a positive effect on Europe’s energy security,” he said.

Talking about the COVID-19 affecting the already existing cooperation between the countries, Szederkényi said that naturally, the restrictions affected some bilateral work, as there were fewer personal exchanges, some consultations, visits had to be postponed.

“But we tried to adapt to these – hopefully only temporary – new realities and the development of business relations remained high on our agenda, so even throughout the pandemic period contacts continued at all levels,” he said.

The reconstruction of Azerbaijan’s territories will create new opportunities for deepening economic cooperation between Azerbaijan and Hungary.

Following over a month of military action to liberate its territories from Armenian occupation from late Sept. to early Nov. 2020, Azerbaijan has pushed Armenia to sign the surrender document. A joint statement on the matter was made by the Azerbaijani president, Armenia’s PM, and the president of Russia.

A complete ceasefire and a cessation of all hostilities in the zone of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict were introduced on Nov. 10, 2020.

Szederkényi noted that Hungary was among the first countries to express interest in participating in this, in his words, truly giant endeavor.

“On January 14, this year, a videoconference was held on this topic between the Co-Chairs of the Joint Intergovernmental Commission, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade of Hungary, Mr. Péter Szijjártó, and Minister of Labor and Social Protection of Azerbaijan, Mr. Sahil Babayev,” he said.

Szederkényi noted that during the online meeting the ministers have identified the potential spheres of cooperation, such as infrastructural, urban, and agricultural development.

“During the videoconference, Minister Szijjártó announced that a 100 million dollars credit line is available by our EXIM Bank to support Hungarian companies who are interested to take part in the reconstruction,” he said.

EU and Armenia Comprehensive and Enhanced Partnership Agreement enters into force

Modern Diplomacy
March 3 2021

On 1 March 2021, the European Union-Armenia Comprehensive and Enhanced Partnership Agreement (CEPA) will enter into force. It has now been ratified by the Republic of Armenia, all EU Member States and the European Parliament. This represents an important milestone for EU-Armenia relations.

This Agreement provides a framework for the EU and Armenia to work together in a wide range of areas: strengthening democracy, the rule of law and human rights; creating more jobs and business opportunities, improving legislation, public safety, a cleaner environment, as well as better education and opportunities for research. This bilateral agenda also contributes to overall aim of the EU to deepen and strengthen its relations with the countries of its Eastern neighbourhood through the Eastern Partnership framework.

High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy/Vice-President of the European Commission, Josep Borrell, said: “The entry into force of our Comprehensive and Enhanced Partnership Agreement comes at a moment when Armenia faces significant challenges. It sends a strong signal that the EU and Armenia are committed to democratic principles and the rule of law, as well as to a wider reform agenda. Across political, economic, trade, and other sectoral areas, our Agreement aims to bring positive change to people’s lives, to overcome challenges to Armenia’s reforms agenda.”

Commissioner for Neighbourhood and Enlargement, Olivér Várhelyi, underlined that: “While these are trying times for Armenia, the European Union continues to stand by the Armenian people. The entry into force of the bilateral EU-Armenia agreement on 1 March will allow us to strengthen our work on the economy, connectivity, digitalisation and the green transformation as priority areas. These will have concrete benefits for the people and are key for socio-economic recovery and the longer-term resilience of the country. In the current turbulent days, maintaining calm and respect for democracy and constitutional order are key.”

The Agreement was signed in November 2017 and substantial parts of have been provisionally applied since 1 June 2018. Since then, the breadth and depth of the bilateral cooperation between Armenia and the European Union have advanced steadily. At the 3rd EU-Armenia Partnership Council held on 17 December 2020, the European Union and Armenia reiterated their full commitment to implementing the CEPA.

The Agreement plays an important role for the modernisation of Armenia, in particular through legislative approximation to EU norms in many sectors. This includes reforms in the rule of law and respect of human rights, particularly an independent, efficient and accountable justice system, as well as reforms aimed at enhancing the responsiveness and effectiveness of public institutions and at favouring the conditions for sustainable and inclusive development.

From the entry into force of the Agreement on 1 March, cooperation will be strengthened in those areas which to date were not subject to the provisional application of the Agreement. The European Union stands ready and looks forward to working even more closely with Armenia on the full and effective implementation of the Agreement, in our mutual interest and to the benefit of our societies and citizens.

Armenia’s Armed Forces demand the resignation of Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and his government, the General Staff said in a statement on Thursday, stressing that the cabinet is incapable of taking adequate decisions in a critical situation

MOSCOW, February 25./TASS/. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov expressed hope for a peaceful settlement to the situation in Armenia in a phone call with his Armenian counterpart Ara Ayvazyan, emphasizing that Moscow viewed the latest developments as an internal affair of Yerevan.

“Ayvazyan reported on the latest developments in the republic. The Russian side emphasized that we consider the situation to be an internal affair of Armenia, and expect that it will be settled peacefully,” the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a report circulated after the phone call.

Armenia’s Armed Forces are demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and his government, the General Staff said in a statement on Thursday, stressing that the cabinet is incapable of taking adequate decisions in a critical situation.

“The prime minister and the Armenian government are no longer able to make adequate decisions in this critical and pivotal situation for the Armenian people. In connection with the current situation, the Armenian Armed Forces demand the resignation of the Prime Minister and the Government of the Republic of Armenia, while warning to refrain from using force against the people, whose children died defending the Motherland and Artsakh [Nagorno-Karabakh],” the statement said.

The Shosh community in the Askeran region of Artsakh (Karabakh) has become a border village as a result of the 44-day war. Shosh is located right across from the now Azerbaijani controlled city of Shushi. The basement of the village school served as a shelter for the residents and the soldiers during the war. From the school play yard, one can clearly see Shushi’s Ghazanchetsots Cathedral, bombed twice by Azerbaijan during the war.

Today, Azerbaijani military and civilian cars constantly pass through the village.

“Our job is to educate the children, but the state must be the guarantor of security,” Hamlet Harutyunyan, the school principal, tells CIVILNET.

Political scientist: Pro-Armenian reports appeared in Ukrainian media due to Ara Saghatelyan’s efforts during war

Panorama, Armenia
Feb 23 2021

A group of people, including political scientists and NGO representatives, on Tuesday held a rally outside the National Security Service of Armenia (NSS) in support of Ara Saghatelyan, a former chief of staff of the National Assembly, who has been placed under a two-month arrest in compliance with a court ruling.

Political scientist, head of the Voskanapat Analytical Center Hrant Melik-Shahnazaryan told reporters that they have gathered outside the building of the law enforcement agency to show both the public and the NSS investigators who Ara Saghatelyan is and how he counteracted the Azerbaijani propaganda machine to make Armenia’s position clear and accessible to all those dealing with the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.

“We have brought materials which we will hand over to the NSS so that they understand who they are dealing with. I deeply regret that the agency intended to ensure security, leaving aside the issues of national security, actually serves the traitor and makes every effort to complete the betrayal started by Nikol Pashinyan in regard to the Artsakh issue,” he said.

According to Melik-Shahnazaryan, people who can offer pro-Armenian solutions in the current situation are factually isolated.

The political scientist strongly believes that Nikol Pashinyan has a plan and is consistently implementing it.

“He did everything possible to pave the way for our defeat in the war and the surrender of our homeland to the enemy. He signed documents, which will make it difficult to rectify the situation. Now he orders arrests of people who did their best for the Artsakh issue to be properly covered by the international media,” he said.

The political scientist stated that during the 2020 Artsakh war, when Ara Saghatelyan worked with foreign media representatives in Stepanakert, coordinating their work and using his personal ties and opportunities, the NSS wiretapped his phone calls.

“Let me bring an example: Saghatelyan managed to change the situation overnight amid the anti-Armenian propaganda in the Ukrainian media from the first days of the war. He did his best to change the situation in our favor. On these very days, the NSS wiretapped Saghatelyan’s phone calls, but failed to find anything,” Melik-Shahnazaryan said.

Rep. Valadao pens letter to Biden Administration urging strong relationship between U.S, Armenia

Your Central Valley
Feb 19 2021

WASHINGTON (KSEE/KGPE) — Rep. David Valadao (R-Hanford) and 99 of his colleagues sent a letter Friday to Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin urging a strong relationship between the U.S. and Armenia.

The letter, sent by the Congressional Caucus on Armenian Issues, highlighted several issues Armenians are facing, including the ongoing struggle with Azerbaijan for the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh region, known by Armenians as Artsakh, that became an armed conflict in 2020.

Despite a ceasefire that was brokered between the two parties with the help of Russia, the letter describes how little has been done to address the “immediate and significant problems of feeding, sheltering, and ensuring the safety of thousands of displaced families during the COVID-19 pandemic.”

“The strong, broad-based bipartisan support for this letter reflects our enduring Congressional solidarity with the Armenian people – here in the Central Valley, across America, and in the Armenian homeland,” Valadao said. “We look forward to working with the Administration on a broad array of policies to protect Artsakh, strengthen Armenia, and bring peace to this region.”

Valadao serves as Co-Chair of the Congressional Caucus on Armenian issues.
