Armenian language taught in Azerbaijan and Azerbaijani – in Nagorno- Karabakh

The Genesis Armenia Foundation announces the opening of the Center for Azerbaijani Studies in Nagorno-Karabakh where Azerbaijan studies and the Azerbaijani language will be taught. A week ago, information appeared that the Armenian language will now be taught at the Azerbaijan State Economic University.

Expert opinion: what caused the interest, and why the conflicting parties decided to study Armenian and Azerbaijani languages.

The Genesis Armenia Foundation considers the opening of the Center for Azerbaijani Studies as a project of strategic importance.

As stated on the official website of the foundation, “Genesis Armenia” is a non-partisan initiative, a research analytical center. Its goal is to consolidate the intellectual potential of Armenia in the field of international relations, security, economy, business, industry, technology, education, culture, healthcare and the environment.

It is reported that the new center is equipped with the necessary teaching equipment and didactic materials:

“At the first stage, more than a dozen young people will study the Azerbaijani language and study Azerbaijan for free. The goal of the program is to prepare an educated generation which knows their national and state interests well”.

The Foundation announces that this initiative involves overcoming military and political challenges, training specialists in the Azerbaijani language who “will be able to use their skills to neutralize information and propaganda threats” and ensure security.

Azerbaijani language course participants

It is known that the Armenian language course at the Azerbaijan State University of Economics is intended for researchers. It is designed for 6 months. This is the initiative of the Center for Economic Research of Armenia operating in Azerbaijan.

According to Azerbaijani media, the course will be taught by Huseyn Askerov, a lecturer at the Department of Caucasian Studies at the Azerbaijan University of Languages. He told reporters that after the second Karabakh war, more and more Azerbaijanis want to learn the Armenian language:

“I can’t manage enrolling everyone who wants to learn Armenian in my schedule, although we really need such specialists”.

Armenian publications, referring to Azerbaijani sources, report that, in particular, employees of the state security services of Azerbaijan, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, border guards, and journalists have signed up for the courses. But only students of the university where they take place can participate free of charge, for the rest the classes are paid.

Azeriologist Taron Hovhannisyan says that interest in the study of Azerbaijani in Armenia and Azerbaijan was observed immediately after the proclamation of the republic, there were simply passive and active stages. In both countries, an increase has been observed since 2010:

“First of all, this was due to the need to study, understand the policies of the other side, the trends that are manifested there, as well as security considerations. It is no coincidence that in both Armenia and Azerbaijan, the language of the other side is studied by the employees of the security forces and the national security services”.

According to Taron Hovhannisyan, the opening of the Center for Azerbaijani Studies in Nagorno-Karabakh is also associated with the objective necessity of training specialists.

Regarding the interest in Armenian in Azerbaijan, the expert believes that perhaps this is due to the demonstration of some positive signals in the field of normalization of relations.

However, based on the statements of the Azerbaijani authorities about their intention to completely return the entire territory of Nagorno-Karabakh under their control, the specialist is more inclined to view the interest in Armenian in this context:

“The state policy is as follows: they are trying to show that they are allegedly ready to live peacefully with the Armenians as part of the Azerbaijani state, although its actions prove the opposite.

Baku will continue to work in this direction. For propaganda purposes, Azerbaijanis will try to convince Armenians that they can return and live in the territories of Nagorno-Karabakh, which came under the control of Azerbaijan as a result of the last war – for example, in Hadrut”.

Turkish press: In Ukraine’s 1st combat use, Bayraktar TB2 destroys Russian armament

A Ukrainian army-owned Bayraktar TB2 can be seen destroying a Russian howitzer in Donbass in this screengrab obtained on Oct. 27, 2021.

Once again video of a Turkey-made unmanned combat aerial vehicle (UCAV), namely Bayraktar TB2, destroying a Russian-made land vehicle went viral on social media.

The footage, showing a familiar scene from Syria and Azerbaijan, was this time shared by the Ukrainian Armed Forces on Tuesday.

It was the Bayraktar TB2 combat drone’s first-ever deployment by the Ukrainian army – which has quite a few of them in its inventory – to destroy a howitzer used by pro-Russian separatists in Donbass.

The Bayraktar TB2 was used for the first time to force the separatists to abide by a cease-fire, the armed forces said in a Facebook statement.

One Ukrainian soldier was killed and two others were wounded by the howitzers, the statement said.

The Kremlin said Wednesday that its fears about Turkey’s decision to sell strike drones to Ukraine were being realized and that the Turkish drones risked destabilizing the situation in eastern Ukraine.

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov was commenting on media reports that Ukrainian government forces had successfully deployed a Turkish-made Bayraktar TB2 drone to strike a position in eastern Ukraine controlled by Russian-backed separatists.

Russian forces annexed the Crimean Peninsula from Ukraine in February 2014, with President Vladimir Putin formally dividing the region into two separate federal subjects of the Russian Federation the following month.

Turkey and the U.S. as well as the U.N. General Assembly view the annexation as illegal.

Fighting between Ukrainian government forces and pro-Russian separatists in Donbass has seen more than 13,000 people killed since 2014, according to the U.N.

The region is one of several sources of friction between Russia and Ukraine.

Ukraine previously operated the Turkish combat drone, using the latest smart ammunition by another Turkish defense giant, Roketsan during the Sea Breeze 2021 military exercise in June.

Ukrainian army, both the land forces and the navy have Bayraktar TB2s – manufactured by Baykar – in its inventory.

The Bayraktar TB2 has been sold to countries including Ukraine, Qatar, Azerbaijan and Poland. In May, Poland became the first European Union and NATO member state to acquire drones from Turkey.

Saudi Arabia is also said to have been interested in buying Turkish drones. Latvia also hinted that it could be the second European Union and NATO member state to acquire the Turkish UCAVs. Albania and Kyrgyzstan have also shown interest in striking a deal to procure Bayraktar TB2s.

Erdogan urges Armenia to mend ties with Azerbaijan

France 24
Oct 26 2021

Baku (AFP)

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Tuesday said Armenia should mend ties with arch foe Azerbaijan if it wants better relations with Ankara.

Turkey and Armenia have no diplomatic relations, a closed frontier and a long history of hostility rooted in massacres of Armenians under the Ottoman Turks during World War I.

The bitter relationship has deteriorated more recently over Turkey’s support for Azerbaijan, which last year fought a war with Armenia for control of the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh region.

On a visit to Azerbaijan on Tuesday, Erdogan set out conditions if Yerevan wanted better ties with Ankara.

“If Armenia shows sincere goodwill towards Azerbaijan, then there will be no obstacles for the normalisation of ties between Turkey and Armenia,” Erdogan said.

“Turkey will reciprocate to Armenia’s steps aimed at building lasting peace in the region,” he told a news conference after attending the opening of a newly-built airport in Azerbaijan’s Fizuli district recaptured during the six-week war last year.

The flare-up claimed more than 6,500 lives and ended in November with a Russian-brokered ceasefire that saw Yerevan cede swathes of contested territory it had controlled for decades.

The fighting stirred fears Russia and Turkey could be drawn in directly to support their allies, interventions that would have put Moscow and Ankara on opposing sides not only in Syria and Libya but in Nagorno-Karabakh too.

Turkic-speaking Azerbaijan’s military triumph over Armenia was an important geopolitical coup for Erdogan as Ankara seeks to cement its influence in the ex-Soviet Caucasus region.

In September, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said Yerevan was prepared to hold discussions to repair relations with Turkey.

Ethnic Armenian separatists in Nagorno-Karabakh broke away from Azerbaijan as the Soviet Union collapsed in 1991, and the ensuing conflict has claimed around 30,000 lives.

The Embassy of Azerbaijan tried to disrupt the screening of a documentary about the Artsakh war

Panorama, Armenia
Oct 21 2021

The Embassy of Azerbaijan has tried to disrupt the screening of a documentary about the 44-day war in Artsakh in the US.  The documentary titled  “45 days: The fight for a Nation” is filmed by former British Royal Marines Commando Emile Ghessen, who visited Artsakh during the war in October 2020.

According to reports, the Embassy has reached the cinema theatre, demanding to cancel the screening, suggesting their reputation would suffer otherwise. The theatre has refused the demands, after which the Embassy sent a truck with a screen on it displaying an anti-Armenian poster and bought a parking space outside the theatre for it trying to discredit the event.

Emile Ghessen has reacted to the Azerbaijani provocation on Twitter. “Thank you Azerbaijani Embassy for sending your truck down to our screening this evening as well as trying to bully the theatre to stop the screening. Next time, don’t waste your money, I have free tickets for you and it’s much warmer inside,” Ghessen tweeted.

Sheikh Sultan receives Armenian Honour Award

Gulf Today, UAE
Oct 10 2021

The Armenian people’s love for the Arabs is not new, but is rooted in the depths of history, said Sheikh Sultan.

Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah His Highness Dr Sheikh Sultan Bin Mohammed Al Qasimi received the Armenian Honour Award by the Speaker of Armenian Parliament, on behalf of Armenian President, Serzh Sargsyan, for his pledge to fund the renovation of the Armenian medieval complex, Hagardzin.

Hagardzin is considered a historical cultural monument in Armenia that dates back to the 13th century.

On the occasion of receiving the medal, Sheikh Sultan said: “We have seen the Armenian people’s love for the Arabs, which is not new, but is rooted in the depths of history. During our last visit, the people welcomed us with love.

Therefore, we exchange love and respect with them, and we pray to God to guide them to what is good for their country.”

The announcement comes as a continuation of the project launched by Dr Sultan Al Qasimi Centre, which aims to highlight on a monthly basis one of the distinctive pieces from the collection of Sheikh Sultan, which represents exceptional achievements in various fields.

Recently, The popular theatrical works of Sheikh received a grand reception in Madrid and Cordoba, the historic capital of Andalusia.

Elite intellectuals and academics have discussed and celebrated the rich legacy of Sharjah Ruler’s theatrical works, including those translated into Spanish, as part of the “Sharjah Literary Days” event organised by the Sharjah Book Authority (SBA) in cooperation with Cása Árabe, which is operated as the strategic centre for Spain’s relations with the Arab world.

The event follows a 2019 agreement between SBA and Cása Árabe, which was signed in the presence of the Ruler of Sharjah to strengthen bilateral collaboration.

The event was held in the presence of Ahmed bin Rakkad Al Ameri, SBA Chairman; Majid Hassan Mohamed Al Suwaidi, Ambassador of the United Arab Emirates to the Kingdom of Spain; Dr Abdul Aziz Al Musallam, Chairman of the Sharjah Institute for Heritage; Bachar Yaghi, Ambassador of the League of Arab States to the Kingdom of Spain; diplomats, media persons, and officials representing the UAE and Spain.

Moderated by Muhammad Majid Al Suwaidi, two sessions to discuss a selection of the most notable works of Sheikh Sultan were organised in Cása Árabe in Madrid and in Cordoba.

A True Copy, The Case, Alexander the Great, Mighty Samson, Da’esh (ISIS) and Al Ghabra’a, and The Book of Allah: A Play on The Conflict between Light and Darkness.

Speaking about the plays, Al Jasmi said: “The theatrical works of the Ruler of Sharjah are based on historical events, not just as a narration of the past, but also to provide context to the incidents. History gives us the opportunity to learn from past mistakes, and helps us understand the many reasons why people may behave the way they do. Most importantly, His Highness very subtly urges us to heed the lessons that history teaches us so as not to repeat past mistakes which can lead to chaos, confusion and even disintegration of nations.”

He added: “His Highness’ theatrical works highlight his great command over the language and precise use of words to convey a point. They are great examples of the Sharjah Ruler’s facility with words and demonstrate his love for the art form.”

For her part, Botello said: “I was very impressed with the Spanish translations of His Highness Sheikh Dr Sultan Al Qasimi’s theatrical works which are true hallmarks of his great intellect.

They convey a wealth of knowledge and address many issues related to the human experience and existence. I am truly honoured to participate in this event.”

Iran seeks closer cooperation with Armenia on manuscript restoration

Tehran Times, Iran

October 3, 2021 – 18:45

TEHRAN – The Iranian cultural attaché in the Armenian capital of Yerevan said that Iran is seeking closer cooperation with the country on the restoration of Persian manuscripts.

Hossein Tabatabai made the remarks in a recent visit to the Matenadaran, a museum and repository of manuscripts in Yerevan, Iran’s Islamic Culture and Relations Organization (ICRO) announced on Saturday.

Ara Philipossian, an Iranian-Armenian professor of chemical engineering at the University of Arizona, who is scheduled to finance an immense project, which includes the restoration of Persian manuscripts at the Matenadaran, accompanied Tabatabai.

They also met Matenadaran director Vahan Ter-Ghevondyan and the museum’s head of the Department of International Relations, Vardi Keshishian.

“The Matenadaran is a major cultural and scientific center in Armenia that preserves a unique treasure trove of manuscripts in Transcaucasia,” Tabatabai said at the meeting.

“Due to the Iranian and Islamic manuscripts preserved at the Matenadaran, it is like a window on the mysterious world of Iranian art and culture, which can quench any scholar’s thirst for knowledge on manuscript issues,” he added.

The Matenadaran has recently asked Iran to organize a workshop to be given by an Iranian scholar at the museum on the restoration of manuscripts with lacquered covers.

Tabatabai said that the workshop will be held in the near future and noted, “This workshop can be a great step in the preservation of Iranian manuscripts in the museum and also help expand cultural relations between Iran and Armenia.”

Ter-Ghevondyan also expressed thanks to the Iranian Cultural Center in Yerevan over its close cooperation with the Matenadaran and said that the workshop will help improve the preservation of the Persian manuscripts in the museum.

He also announced plans to organize special exhibitions and sessions on Iranian objects being preserved at the museum and called on Tabatabai to visit the cultural programs.

The Matenadaran – Mesrop Mashtots Institute of Ancient Manuscripts – home to Islamic manuscripts now contains a total of 2715 volumes, 450 of which are in Persian.

The museum was established in 1959 on the basis of the nationalized collection of the Armenian Church, formerly held at Etchmiadzin.

Its collection has gradually risen since its establishment, mostly from individual donations. One of the most prominent landmarks of Yerevan, it is named after Mesrop Mashtots, the inventor of the Armenian alphabet, whose statue stands in front of the building.

The collection features a rare manuscript copy of Persian poet Abolqasem Ferdowsi’s epic masterpiece Shahnameh ordered by the Timurid prince Baysanghur ibn Shah Rukh ibn Timur (d. 1433).
