BRAVE ANGIE TO SWIM IN AID OF ARMENIA

« Previous « PreviousNext » Next »View GalleryA STONEHAVEN woman left
unable to propel herself through water after breaking her back is
embarking on a sponsored swim for charity.

Following an accident eight years ago, Angie Mutch was told that there
was no chance of her being able to swim again.

But having undertaken lessons at Stonehaven Leisure Centre she has
defied the experts.

Angie can currently manage around 10 lengths, but by the middle of May
she is aiming to treble that total to raise money for medical care in
Armenia.

In October, Angie will lead a team of two nurses and two doctors to
the Eastern European country, located between Turkey and Azerbaijan.

Armenia is still reeling from a major earthquake in 1988 and Angie is
desperate to help with the rebuilding programme which is still
ongoing.
She said: "Eighty percent of medical staff in the country were killed
when hospitals collapsed. As a result no medical help was immediately
available. Whole villages were completely wiped out.

"Because hospitals had to be rebuilt, and new nurses and doctors
trained, most medical help in Armenia has come from other
countries. The country now has a home-grown staff that needs
specialist training in trauma and earthquake care.

"We have been asked to train nursing and medical staff advanced trauma
care, both pre-hospital and hospital-based. The team will also be
teaching social care and first aid to villagers, school teachers,
church members and village leaders in the main earthquake zone."

Angie is hoping to raise £3,000, not only to cover her travel costs
but to provide medical equipment for a village.

To do this she has learned to swim with a specially adapted stroke,
which is necessary because her back injury makes it impossible for her
head to go under water.

Angie is hoping to attract as many sponsors as possible for her
attempt to swim 30 lengths, currently scheduled for Monday May 12 in
Stonehaven.
She is also eager to hear from any businesses which may be interested
in helping impoverished villagers in Armenia.

Angie can be contacted on 07786 514615. Sponsor forms are also
available in Stonehaven’s Toymaster store on Allardice Street.

Iran’s Nuri Choir to perform Carl Orff’s `Carmina Burana’

TEHRAN, May 6 (MNA) — Iran’s Nuri Choir conducted by Alireza
Shafaqinejad is to perform Carl Orff’s `Carmina Burana’ at the Vahdat
Hall from May 13 to 16.

The 140-memebr choir will be performing the piece for the first time
in Iran, Shafaqinejad told the Mehr News Agency on Tuesday.

He went on to say that, `Carl Orff had performed the piece in two
ways. The original version was arranged for two pianos and percussion
accompanied with soloists, mixed choir and children’s choir. He also
made a second arrangement for a 200-member orchestra with an array of
string and wind instruments.’

He continued, `At first, we were planning to perform the second
transcription along with conductor Loris Tjeknavorian and the Armenia
Symphony Orchestra, but we could not realize our plan because of
insufficient funding’.

Shafaqinejad also remarked that children’s choral union of `Pars’ will
be accompanying the group in the 75-minute performance.

German composer Carl Orff composed `Carmina Burana’ between 1935 and
1936. The most famous movement is `O Fortuna’ (Fortuna means Fortune
in Latin; it is also the name of a Roman goddess). Orff’s composition
has been performed by countless ensembles.

SHAKARYANC OFFERS, MAKE NKR A PART OF NEGOTIATIONS

`I see no threat of war,’ said politician Sergey
Shakaryanc in a meeting with the journalists.
According to him it is not realistic even if
Azerbaijan keeps talking about increasing its military
budget. The politician said that Azerbaijan should not
forget many elements such as Iran. `Besides many
countries just won’t let Azerbaijan start any military
activities in the region,’ he said.

According to the politician any military activity in
the region will have worse impacts on the Middle East
and Northern Caucasus.

`We should activate our diplomatic policy as it would
but support to the regulations,’ he said and added
that the recent document accepted by the NA is even
weak one.

According to the politician measures should be taken
which would be distinct to the ear of all world.
According to Shakaryanc the NKR should become a part
of the negotiations and Armenia could act as the
security guarantee of it.

Armenia Opposition Youths Demand Release Of All Country’s Political

ARMENIA OPPOSITION YOUTHS DEMAND RELEASE OF ALL COUNTRY’S POLITICAL PRISONERS

Russia

Activists of the Now youth movement, which backs former Armenian
President Levon Ter-Petrosian, have staged a protest rally in Yerevan
demanding to release of Armenian political prisoners.

Several dozens of activists put on overalls, with only one letter
engraved on each overall, but which altogether make up the phrase:
"Freedom to Political Prisoners."

The protesters marched in downtown Yerevan. They stopped near the
Armenian government offices, the parliament, the presidential
residence, the Prosecutor General’s Office, the monument to
revolutionary Alexander Myasnikian – Vladimir Lenin’s comrade and
the first chairman of the Council of People’s Commissars in Soviet
Armenia – and the embassies of France and Italy.

The youths then marched along Severny Prospekt and attempted to enter
Liberty Square, but police officers did not allow them to do this.

According to earlier reports, refusing to accept the official results
of the February 19 presidential elections, Ter-Petrosian and his
followers organized protests in Yerevan on March 1, which later grew
into clashes with police, in which 10 people were killed and more
than 200 injured. Ter-Petrosian’s supporters still do not recognize
the election results.

The National Movement Center headed by the former Armenian president is
preparing a lawsuit at the European court of Human Rights (ECHR). They
are going to appeal violations during and the falsified results of
the February election. A working group, in which foreign lawyers are
involved, was established to prepare the lawsuit.

Armenian Parliament Members Refused To Include The Bill On The Recog

ARMENIAN PARLIAMENT MEMBERS REFUSED TO INCLUDE THE BILL ON THE RECOGNITION OF NKR ON THE AGENDA

On April 28 the parliament of Armenia refused to include the bill on
the recognition of Nagorno-Karabakh Republic presented by the leader
of the Heritage Party Raffi Hovannisian on the agenda. The members
of parliament voted 64 to 15 against including the bill on the agenda.

Member of Parliament Victor Dallakyan said a refusal means that
the Armenian members of parliament are against the recognition of
Nagorno-Karabakh, which "favors the enemies". According to him, this
issue should be on the agenda because it is highly important and it
will be possible to discuss it any time.

The chair of the Armenian National Assembly Committee of Foreign
Affairs Armen Rustamyan said that the foreign policy of Armenia
is determined by the president. According to Armen Rustamyan, the
Committee expected that the president administration and the foreign
ministry would discuss it but they did not, therefore the committee
approved the project.

Speaker Tigran Torosyan said for Armenia the international recognition
of Nagorno-Karabakh Republic is important because hardly a person
will be found in the country who would mind the recognition of
Nagorno-Karabakh Republic, and urged not to make much ado about
nothing. "Everything has its right time," said Torosyan, adding that
in case of necessity "we will get the necessary number of votes within
7 minutes to pass the bill."

At the same time, the speaker of the parliament of Armenia presented
the draft statement on the settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.

According to the draft statement, the Armenian parliament considers
the right of the people of Nagorno-Karabakh for self-determination
as "impeccable and undisputable in terms of the international law"
and underlines the "necessity for placing this issue at the basis of
settlement of the problem without reservations."

Violation Of Property Rights Of Citizens Continues, Larisa Alaverdia

VIOLATION OF PROPERTY RIGHTS OF CITIZENS CONTINUES, LARISA ALAVERDIAN CLAIMS

Noyan Tapan
April 29, 2008

YEREVAN, APRIl 29, NOYAN TAPAN. The violation of property rights is
continuing in Armenia. Stating this in the National Assembly on April
29, member of "Heritage" faction Larisa Alaverdian reminded that in
1998 the Constitutional Court made two decisions clarifying citizens’
property rights. However, as a result of some governmental decisions
these rights were violated, and until now the government has not
taken any decision to restore property rights.

L. Alaverdian indicated in particular the violation of property rights
of the land users of Dalma Gardens and of rights of some city residents
in connection with urban development of Yerevan. According to her,
she has sent letters to the government in these cases. In the words of
L. Alaverdian, it is clear from the answers that the authorities are
unable to solve a simple problem: if a group of businessmen violate
laws and citizens’ rights, the government has to immediately take
a decision to provide compensation to such citizens and hold those
guilty accountable. Otherwise, as she said, promises made by the
current authorities cannot inspire confidence.
