Asbarez: AEF Awards Dr. Feliks Karapetyan Scholarship to 11 War Veterans

Dr. Arman Karapetyan and Dr. Feliks Karapetyan Scholarship Recipients

Dr. Arman Karapetyan, a Glendale Aesthetic Physician and member of the Armenian American Medical Association, is one of many generous scholarship sponsors of the Armenian Educational Foundation. Dr. Karapetyan established a scholarship in honor of his father, Dr. Feliks Karapetyan, a former professor at the Yerevan State Medical University named after Mhitar Heratsi—a 12th-century Armenian physician.

Dr. Feliks Karapetyan was recently honored by the university with the Mkhitar Heratsi Gold Medal for his 35 years of dedicated service.

The Dr. Feliks Karapetyan Scholarship was awarded to eleven Yerevan State Medical University students. This scholarship is unique as it is designated to pay the full tuition for 11 medical students who are also 44-day Artsakh war participants, including seven who were wounded.

During his visit to Armenia, Dr. Karapetyan and his father met with the scholarship recipients for a friendly lunch. The luncheon was an opportunity for Dr. Karapetyan to share his expertise and knowledge with the students and get to know each one of them and hear their stories and experiences during the war.

“After meeting you, we recognized your sincerity and friendliness,” said Roman Ohanyan, a scholarship recipient, as he addressed Dr. Karapetyan. “I was very excited by the fact that there are still such people in society who are ready to be by our side after the war, to support us, and make the greatest contribution to the development of our country and our future. To me, it was interesting that you named a scholarship after your father, which, I think, is one of the best gifts, because by investing in the education of doctors, you will save many lives. Dr. Karapetyan, on behalf of all wounded soldiers, I thank you for your support, wishing you good health and many years of life,” he added.

After meeting with his sponsored students, Dr. Karapetyan wrote, “I’m also thankful for the opportunity to help. Those are wonderful people; I was very touched by their stories and glad that I met them. Armine [AEF’s Yerevan Office Director] is doing great job.” It is because of the generosity of individuals like Dr. Karapetyan that AEF has been able to provide scholarships to over 1,200 students in Armenia, Artsakh, and Javakhk. Of these, over 300 heroes served in the front lines during the 44-day war, including 131 wounded plus 31 students whose brother or father was a 44-day war participant.

Armenia, France officially launch Armenian cultural heritage preservation program

ARMINFO
Armenia –
Alina Hovhannisyan

ArmInfo.Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of France to Armenia Ms. Anne  Louyot and Minister of Education, Science, Culture and Sports of  Armenia Vahram Dumanyan signed a memorandum on the official launch of  a large program aimed at preserving the cultural heritage of Armenia,  developing the potential of specialists in this field, as well as  implementing and development of “Armenia.

Exploring, preserving  and  enhancing heritage” museum project.  Minister Dumanyan noted that  cultural heritage is a priority for the Armenian government,  especially after the 44-day Artsakh war, when Azerbaijan launched a  policy of cultural genocide, which created challenges for the  preservation of Armenia’s cultural heritage outside the country.

Noting that the Armenian-French agenda is expanding from year to  year, Doumanyan expressed hope that the program will be long-lasting.  “I hope this project will contribute to the development of effective  Armenian-French cooperation, creating new opportunities for the  implementation of new programs,” he said.

According to Ms. Louyot, the program includes 3 components that cover  various areas of cultural heritage and rely on the skills and leading  experience of French and Armenian specialists. In particular, within  the framework of the first component, it is planned to strengthen and  develop the skills of Armenian specialists in the restoration and  preservation of cultural heritage through retraining at the National  Heritage Institute of France in cooperation with the Scientific  research center of the historical and cultural heritage.  In this  regard, the director of the Institute, Charles Personnaz , emphasized  that the institution was involved in the process of developing a  retraining program from the very beginning. In addition, he noted  that the program also provides an opportunity to exchange  specialists. In this regard, Personnaz remarked:  “We also have  something to learn from Armenian specialists.”

He also stressed that Armenia and France are countries with an  exceptional heritage, including architectural style. “Our task is to  make cooperation long-term in order to increase the value of the  existing heritage for the whole world,” he said.

The second component of the program, as noted, concerns the  restoration of the monastery complex of “Tatevi Mets Anapat  “.  At  the first stage of the project, it is planned to conduct a historical  and architectural study of the monuments, and before the actual  restoration, to organize the first volunteer labor camp together with  “Rempart” and the Terre et Culture association ().  The second component is also implemented by the French National  Heritage Institute in collaboration with the Scientific research  center of the historical and cultural heritage. The program is still  at the development stage. At the moment, a work schedule is being  drawn up.

The third component is related to the reorganization and  modernization of the Erebuni Museum’s permanent exhibition in order  to increase the value of the latter. It is noteworthy that the  project will be implemented jointly with the world’s leading museum –  the Louvre. This is the first project in Armenia in which a museum of  this level has been involved. Head of the Oriental Antiquities  Department of the Louvre Museum , Ariane Thomas, noted: “It is a  great honor for me to participate in the program to develop a new  concept for such an important museum for Armenia as Erebuni. And we  will be happy to participate in the revival of the museum>.

In turn director of the Erebuni Museum Mikayel Badalyan said that  practically since 1983 the exposition of the museum has not been  updated. He called the support of the Louvre invaluable, noting in  this regard that there is a limited number of specialists in Armenia  involved in holding exhibitions in museums.

The total cost of the project is 600 thousand euros. According to the  signed memorandum, the project will start in July this year and end  in December 2023.

The project was developed by the Ministry of Education, Science,  Culture and Sports of the Republic of Armenia in cooperation with the  National Heritage Institute of France, the Louvre Museum, the  Scientific research center of the historical and cultural heritage  and the Erebuni Museum.

Tehran: Raymond Kévorkian’s book on history of Armenian Genocide published in Persian

TEHRAN – “The Armenian Genocide: A Complete History” by French historian Raymond Kévorkian has been published in Persian by the Afkar publishing house in Tehran.

Saeid Karimpur is the translator of the book originally published in 2006.

The Armenian Genocide was one of the greatest atrocities of the twentieth century, an episode in which up to 1.5 million Armenians lost their lives.

In this major new history, Kévorkian provides a long-awaited authoritative account of the origins, events and consequences of the years 1915 and 1916.

He explains and analyses the debates that occurred within the elite circles of the Young Turks, and traces the roots of the violence that would be raged upon the Ottoman Armenians.

Uniquely, this is also a geographical account of the Armenian genocide, documenting its course region by region, including a complete account of the deportations, massacres and resistance that occurred.

Kévorkian considers the role that the Armenian Genocide played in the construction of the Turkish nation-state and Turkish identity, as well as exploring the ideologies of power, rule and state violence, presenting an important contribution to the understanding of how such destruction could have occurred.

Thus, Kévorkian examines the history of the Young Turks and the Armenians in the Ottoman Empire as they came into conflict with one another, taking into consideration the institutional, political, social and even psychological mechanisms that culminated in the destruction of the Ottoman Armenians.

Beginning with an exploration of the origins of the Young Turk Revolution in 1908, Kévorkian analyses the decision-making process which led to the terrible fate of those who were deported to the concentration camps of Aleppo and along the Euphrates.

Crucially, “The Armenian Genocide” also examines the consequences of the violence against the Armenians, the implications of the expropriation of property and assets and deportations, as well as the attempts to bring those who committed atrocities to justice.

This covers the documents from the Mazhar Governmental Commission of Inquiry and the formation of courts martial by the Ottoman authorities, and the findings of the March 1920 Committee for the Protection of the Minorities in Turkey, created by the League of Nations.

Kévorkian offers a detailed and meticulous account of the Armenian Genocide, providing an authoritative analysis of the events and their impact upon the Armenian community itself, as well as the development of the Turkish state.

This important book will serve as an indispensable resource to historians of the period, as well as those wishing to understand the history of genocidal violence more generally.
