Armenians who received Azerbaijani passports in Georgia, came to
Azerbaijan to live and work in the country, Sabir Mehtiyev, the head
of Georgia is my Motherland organization in the village of Sadakhli
of the Marneul region, stated.

According to Mehtiyev, about 1mln Azerbaijanis lived in Georgia till
1990, but the number made up 702,000 after the election of Michael
Saakashvili as the President. At present, the number totals 200,000
to 250,000.

"No Azerbaijanis will remain in Georgia if no changes take place in
the country during the next four to five months," Mehtiyev stated.

"The market in the Marneul region of Georgia, where Azerbaijanis
worked, was closed and replaced in a village in Armenia as a result
of measures taken by Armenians. However, 700 to 800 Azerbaijanis
still work in the market, crossing the border daily," Mehtiyev said.

Mehtiyev stated that Armenians living in Marneul purchase Azerbaijani
passports and come to Azerbaijan and other countries as well.

According to the information, about 400 Armenians by origin live
and work in the country. However, according to Armenians living
in Georgia, there are 250,000 Armenians living in the territory of
Azerbaijan. There are intelligence officers among Armenians sent by
Dashnaks to Azerbaijan.

The Azerbaijani National Security Ministry informed Trend that
the Ministry takes measures directed against national and state
interests of the country. Arif Babayev, the head of the Centre on
Public Relations at the Ministry, said that the people who stated that
there is intelligence officers among Armenians living in Azerbaijan
can submit their facts to the Ministry.

Nabucco Visit Aims To Bind Turkey Closer

NABUCCO VISIT AIMS TO BIND TURKEY CLOSER
By Thomas Grove

Wednesday February 13 2008

ISTANBUL, Feb 13 (Reuters) – The European Union is expected to send a
strong message to Turkey to fall in line with the bloc’s energy policy
on Thursday when a coordinator for one of Europe’s most important
gas projects visits Ankara.

The coordinator of the Nabucco pipeline scheme, former Dutch Foreign
Minister Jozias van Aartsen is visiting Ankara on the heels of the
selection of German utility RWE as the sixth partner in the project,
which is a major plank in the EU’s policy to ease dependence on
Russian gas.

"The visit to Turkey is the EU trying to send a signal that the
Nabucco is still being taken seriously, but that there are still some
major problems, and support (for the project) is very important,"
said Gareth Winrow, professor of international relations at Bilgi
University and an expert on energy security.

Political will is now seen as crucial for the Nabucco consortium,
made up mostly of the pipeline’s transit states, as it tries to
secure natural gas around the geopolitically thorny post-Soviet
Caspian region, traditionally aligned with Russia.

Ankara has gone against the grain by pressing for the inclusion of
Iranian gas in the pipeline, despite EU opposition.

"Turkey is one of the partners of the (Nabucco) consortium, and with
no Turkey there’s no Nabucco … but there is a difference over Iran
coming into the deal," European Commission spokesman Ferran Taradellas
Espuny told Reuters.

IRANIAN GAS Despite pressure from the United States to call off
the deal and Iran’s frequent gas cuts to Turkey, Ankara has said it
will push ahead and invest $3.5 billion to develop gas fields in its
eastern neighbour and sell the gas to Europe.

That position, which analysts say decreases Nabucco’s clout at
the bargaining table with Caspian producers, is being used to bend
European will on issues including higher transit fees on Nabucco gas
transiting Turkey, as well as its EU bid.

"Turkey is trying to use its position with added inflows of gas
coming into the country (from Iran) to strengthen its position at the
bargaining table with Europe," said Manouchehr Takin, an analyst at
the Centre for Global Energy Studies.

The trip will also touch on the participation of Gaz de France in the
project, which Turkey has vocally opposed, after the French National
Assembly voted to make it a crime to deny the killing of Armenians
in Ottoman Turkey in 1915 was genocide.

"On the trip van Aartsen is going to try to get Turkey to come on
board to get Gaz de France into the partnership," said David Niles,
an analyst at Datamonitor in London.

RWE was chosen as the sixth partner after Turkey threw its support
behind the company, but the need for investment may mean a seventh
partner, a possibility Nabucco officials have mentioned before.

The 4.6 billion euro ($6.7 billion) project has already seen a number
of delays, and last month the consortium said the final date for the
project’s completion had been pushed back a year.

"We’ve had to reschedule a bit in 2009 and 2010. The final date for
the project will be 2013," said Christian Dolezal, spokesman for the
Nabucco project.

Supplies coming from Azerbaijan, which has signed an agreement with
Europe for the use of its gas in the project, have their own timeline,
and Europe is looking to Turkmenistan and Kazakhstan to supplement
Azeri supplies.

Yerevan /Mediamax/. Leader of the People’s Party of Armenia (PPA)
Stepan Demirchian believes that "if there is information on the
meeting of Ter-Petrosian with Medvedev, this means that the meeting
took place".

Mediamax reports that the Russian "Kommersant" newspaper reads this
today, commenting on the statements of certain Armenian media,
according to which the presidential candidate in Armenia Levon
Ter-Petrosian was received by the Russian First Vice-Prime Minister
Dmitri Medvedev.

"We did not manage to have this information confirmed in the staff
of Mr. Medvedev – yesterday the Russian presidential candidate
with his team left for a regular trip to Russian regions. However,
the closest supporters of Ter-Petrosian argue that the meeting took
place. "The visit was successful. Our candidate was received at the
highest level and I can say that after the election of Ter-Petrosian
the relations with Russia will rise to a new level", Leader of the
People’s Party of Armenia Stepan Demirchian stated. What concerns the
meeting of Ter-Petrosian and Medvedev, according to the PPA Leader,
"if there is such information, this means that the meeting took
place". Mr. Demirchian categorically refused to make other comments
on this topic", "Kommersant" reads.

ANKARA: PM =?unknown?q?Erdo=F0an?= Chides Europe For Laxity Toward P

PM ERDOÐAN CHIDES EUROPE FOR LAXITY TOWARD PKK AFFILIATES

Today’s Zaman

Turkey

Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoðan criticized Europe for failing to
crack down on front organizations for the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’
Party (PKK), which he said were operating across the bloc, saying
that a soft stance on the PKK and other Turkish terror groups could
later become damaging to them.

In reference to a decision by a Belgian court last week that declined
to describe the Revolutionary People’s Liberation Party/Front
(DHKP/C) as a terrorist group and acquitted its members of charges
of terrorism, Erdoðan said Turkey had difficulties in understanding
how terror suspects are not returned to Turkey despite an Interpol
red bulletin against them or how they could be released by courts.

In the highly controversial DHKP/C verdict, the court ruled that the
group was not a terrorist organization, disregarding complaints from
Turkey and an EU decision to designate it as a terrorist group.

Erdoðan also said the PKK was able to raise money through its
front organizations in Europe, although the group is classified as
a terrorist organization by the EU as well as the United States.
"Despite this, the PKK is still operating in many European countries
under different names. Unfortunately they are being supported,"
he said in a speech inaugurating the 44th annual Munich Security
Conference on Saturday. "What should be done now is to close down
front organizations of the terrorist group, cut its finances, block
terrorist propaganda and engage in more effective cooperation in
the extradition of terrorists," he said, adding that those countries
which fail to take these actions, intentionally or unintentionally,
harm global efforts to combat terrorism.

"Terrorism is not a domestic problem; it is an international problem.
If we fail to stand united against this threat, terrorism will one
day turn against those who support it and hit them like a boomerang,"
he said.

Erdoðan also said Turkey’s military operations on PKK targets would
continue until the PKK is eliminated, calling the fight against the
PKK part of the world’s war on terror. "Let me put it very clearly,"
he said. "We are going to continue until we win."

‘Privileged partnership’ out of the question

The prime minister also criticized European leaders for promoting a
"privileged partnership" for Turkey instead of full membership. "Our
destination is clear: full membership. Sometimes some of our European
friends talk of privileged partnership. We find this ugly," he said,
criticizing EU leaders for trying to change the rules in the middle
of the game. "This does not bode well for justice or the principle
of keeping one’s word," he said.

Iran worries

Asked whether he was worried about Iran’s nuclear program, which the
West suspects is aimed at producing nuclear weapons, Erdoðan said
Turkey was against nuclear weapons but added that it would have
"nothing to say" now that Iran insists it is exclusively aimed at
producing energy.

Noting that Turkey would also soon begin its own nuclear program,
the prime minister said: "We may end up facing the same accusations.

Should we keep trying to rely on natural gas just because there could
be such concerns?" Erdoðan asked. Responding to another question,
Erdoðan said there were talks between Turkey and Iraqi President
Jalal Talabani because he is the leader of a neighboring country and
revealed that there were talks with Massoud Barzani, the president
of the semi-autonomous Kurdish region, though at a lower level.

In defense of freedoms

Responding to questions on an ongoing debate in Turkey over whether
wearing a headscarf should be unrestricted at universities, Erdoðan
said the principle of religious freedom should not be compromised
when it comes to the religious freedom of Muslims.

Erdo&#xF0 ;an, Oskanian spar over Armenian issue at Munich conference

An international security conference held in Munich over the weekend
was the scene of a quarrel between Turkey’s Prime Minister Recep Tayyip
Erdoðan and Armenia’s Foreign Minister Vartan Oskanian, with Erdoðan
accusing the Armenian side of avoiding dealing with historical facts
on their allegations of an alleged Armenian genocide during the last
years of the Ottoman Empire.

Opening the 44th annual Munich Security Conference, Erdoðan also
reiterated an offer he had extended to Armenian President Robert
Kocharian in 2005 that calls for a joint committee of Turkish and
Armenian experts to study the allegations. The call has remained
unanswered by Yerevan to date. "At the moment, the Armenian foreign
minister is also here. Look, I extended my invitation and sent a
letter in 2005. … There is no such thing called genocide in our
culture and civilization. It is not possible for us to accept this,
either. We are ready for any confrontation and are ready to speak
with information and documents," Erdoðan said.

When Oskanian interrupted his remarks by saying "You are speaking
about peace, but our border is closed," Erdoðan continued: "Mr.

Oskanian, look, when I became prime minister, as you know, there were
no air links between Armenia and Turkey. I came, I opened the doors
for airline transportation. Cargo transportation flows from Armenia
to Ýstanbul now as well."

Noting that his government took the initiative to restore a historic
Armenian church in the eastern Anatolian province of Van and that
10,000 Armenian citizens are currently residing in Turkey for work,
Erdoðan added, still addressing Oskanian: "I have no problem with my
Armenian citizens. We get along extremely well with them. Other than
that, more than 40,000 Armenians have come to my country. I wonder
why? You should ask yourself, why did they come? … Because Turkey
is a country of peace." Ýstanbul Today’s Zaman

VAZGEN MANUKIAN BELIEVES THAT "NEITHER OF THE OPPOSITIONAL CANDIDATES IS ABLE TO GAIN OVER 20% IN THE FIRST ROUND OF ELECTIONS"

Mediamax
February 12, 2008

Yerevan /Mediamax/. Armenian Presidential candidate, Leader of
National-Democratic Union (NDU) Vazgen Manukian stated in Yerevan
today that "neither of the oppositional candidates is able to gain
over 20% in the first round of the presidential elections"

Mediamax reports that Vazgen Manukian said this today during the
meeting with the journalists in the Information Center on NATO
in Yerevan.

According to him, it is obvious that neither the candidate from the
ruling party, nor anybody from the representatives of the opposition,
is able to gain victory in the first round of the elections on
February 19.

Leader of NDU stated that in these conditions, a central factor will
become the following – which candidate among the representatives of the
opposition will be able to better unite around himself the oppositional
electorate in the second round. At that Vazgen Manukian refused to make
any supposition as to who has real chances to enter the second round.

party leader, A. Baghdasaryan said at a meeting with a number of

Levitin: Armenia To Be First Foreign Country To Take SuperJet

LEVITIN: ARMENIA TO BE FIRST FOREIGN COUNTRY TO TAKE SUPERJET

Prime-Tass English-language Business Newswire

Yerevan

Armenia will become the first foreign country to take Sukhoi SuperJet
100 passenger planes, Russian Transportation Minister Igor Levitin
told reporters Wednesday.

Russian flag carrier Aeroflot Russian Airlines will be the first
Russian carrier to receive the SuperJet 100, Levitin said.

Russia’s Sukhoi Civil Aircraft, the maker of the SuperJet 100, signed
a multi-mullion dollar agreement in September to supply two SuperJet
100 planes to Armenian airline Armavia. The planes are to be supplied
to Armavia at the end of 2008. Under the agreement, Armavia will also
have an option to acquire another two SuperJet 100s in the future.

Italy’s ItAli is so far the only airline outside the Commonwealth of
Independent States (CIS) to have placed an order for the aircraft.

The Sukhoi Superjet 100 is a regional jet in the 75 to 95-seat
category. Mass production is expected to start in 2008.
