ANKARA: Up to 5,000 Armenian women victims of sex trade: sociologist

Up to 5,000 Armenian women victims of sex trade: sociologist
Published: 6/7/2006

YEREVAN – Between 3,000 and 5,000 Armenian women were forced into the sex
trade in Turkey and the United Arab Emirates last year, the head of the
country’s association of sociologists said Wednesday.
Guevorg Pogossian said in many cases women who had failed to find work in
the economically disadvantaged southern Caucasian country sought jobs
abroad, and found themselves trapped into prostitution, their passports
confiscated.
Pogossian said the women had become increasingly younger.
“A few years ago they were women aged between 18 and 30, now they are girls
from 14 upwards,” he told AFP.
The US State Department recently criticised the Armenian government for its
failure to combat the flesh trade, the US embassy here said. It noted that
last year the courts only dealt with 30 complaints from alleged victims and
launched prosecutions in just 14 cases

Replacement Of OSCE MG US Co-Chair Taken Ambiguously By Moscow

REPLACEMENT OF OSCE MG US CO-CHAIR TAKEN AMBIGUOUSLY BY MOSCOW

/PanARMENIAN.Net/ US Co-Chair of the OSCE Minsk Group being appointed
to another office in the heat of Karabakh talks was taken ambiguously
by Moscow.

Russian temporary Charge d’Affaires in Azerbaijan Peter Burdykin
regretted over Mann’s appointment to another office. In the Russian
diplomat’s words, Mann “defended interests of the US and is an expert
on matters of Azerbaijan and Armenia. A replacement like that at the
moment of Armenian and Azeri Presidents’ meeting is not a very good
step.” We remind that OSCE MG US co-chair, State Department Special
Representative for Eurasian Conflicts Steven Mann is appointed Deputy
Assistant State Secretary for Central and South Asia, reports Day.az.

How A Cadbury Outranks A Blair Or A Beckham

HOW A CADBURY OUTRANKS A BLAIR OR A BECKHAM
By Beth Hale

DAILY MAIL (London)
June 5, 2006 Monday

SOCIAL climbers don’t need to keep up with the Joneses any more ñ
it’s the Pakenhams and Cadburys they have to worry about now.

The names are among the most socially exclusive in Britain, along
with others such as Fortescue, Weiner and Wastie.

Researchers have just finished ranking the standing of 25,000 surnames.

And their findings reveal that while parents can give their child a
first name to make them appear more highbrow, there is no escaping
a downmarket surname.

The study shows that former Posh Spice Victoria Adams took a step
down the pecking order when she married footballer David Beckham.

Her maiden name outranks 61 per cent of the population, while Beckham
tops just 29 per cent.

And Elizabeth Hurley’s surname reveals that she is at heart a
middle-class girl made good with 52 per cent of the population having
a more high status name.

Several leading politicians have outshone the more lowly origins of
their surnames.

Blair is outranked by 86 per cent of the population and Brown fares
little better, being exceeded by 72 per cent.

Foreign Secretary Margaret Beckett’s family name does better,
coming higher than about half the population. Much has been made of
the higher-class roots of Eton- educated Conservative leader David
Cameron, but still more than half the nation has a higher status name.

As for the Shadow Chancellor George Osborne, only 42 per cent of the
population have a higher ranking name.

The research team at University College London have put their findings
online after studying and cross-referencing 46million census documents.

Members of the public can log on to to
discover the origins of their family name. The 12-month, £45,000
project-examined patterns of population movement, social mobility and
cultural identity. It also tracked the distribution of 25,000 surnames
in the 1998 electoral register and compared it with the 1881 census
to chart how people had moved around the country.

Professor Richard Webber and his team ranked names by using the
electoral roll to calculate their frequency in different postcodes,
taking into account employment levels, educational attainment,
financial data and health statistics for each postcode.

They then took an average status for each name from postal districts
across the country.

It emerged that names of Jewish and Armenian origin are among the
top rank.

The results showed that the top 1 per cent of names are dominated
by a mixture of traditional English names with those of more recent
immigrants.

Some upper-class sounding names such as Grosvenor which is the family
name of the Duke of Westminster have become so well- distributed around
the country that they come nowhere near the top of the status tree.

Professor Webber said: ‘People don’t choose their children’s surnames
but inherit them, so most English names are fairly evenly distributed
between higher and lower status areas.

‘But if you look at names that originated from other countries,
they tend to settle in either high or low status areas.

‘So there are a lot of Jewish and Armenian names at the top, and
Ghanian, Vietnamese and Bangladeshi names at the bottom.’

For many people, first names are a more obvious indicator of social
status.

So if you are looking for a high status title for your daughter,
call her Camilla or Elspeth.

If you have a son, name him Giles or Benedict.

And if appearances are important, then avoid Toyah, Wayne or Dwayne.

Professor Webber said: ‘The difference in class of first names is
much greater than for surnames.’

Scacchi: Olimpiadi: Armenia a un passo dal titolo

ANSA Notiziario Generale in Italiano

SCACCHI: OLIMPIADI; ARMENIA A UN PASSO DAL TITOLO

TORINO

derby fra Italia A e Italia B, terminato 2-2. Italia C/Provincia

(ANSA).

European Union attaches great importance to NK conflict’s settlement

02 June 2006 [13:20] – Today.Az

The European Union (EU) supports OSCE Minsk Group activity in Nagorno
Karabakh conflict settlement.

Giuseppe Buzzini, EU New Neighborhood Policy Plenipotentiary for
relations with Azerbaijan, has told in his interview to APA that
resolution of Nagorno Karabakh is outside the competence of New
Neighborhood Policy officers.

“It is a long time since OSCE Minsk Group works for the settlement of
Nagorno Karabakh conflict. France, the EU member, is a co-chairman
here. Somehow we also have a relation to this question.”

Mr. Buzzini has stressed his opinion on that EU is ready for help to
the rehabilitation of the whole region, as well as renewal of
infrastructure and transport communications.

Andreas Herdina, EU New Neighborhood Policy Sectors’ Coordinator, has
told in his interview that the resolution of conflicts in South
Caucasus, as well as conflict over Nagorno Karabakh, is of great
importance for EU.

“We notice positive steps toward the solution observing Armenian and
Azerbaijani Presidents’ talks in Rambouillet and expected sitting in
Bucharest.”

Russian MP Comments On Idea Of Sending Peacekeepers Into NagornyyKar

RUSSIAN MP COMMENTS ON IDEA OF SENDING PEACEKEEPERS INTO NAGORNYY KARABAKH

Ekho Moskvy radio, Moscow
31 May 06

[Presenter] A peacekeeping contingent may be introduced to Nagornyy
Karabakh, the area of the Armenian-Azerbaijani conflict. In any case
this was not excluded today in Baku by Russian Defence Minister Sergey
Ivanov. He recalled that a fragile truce had already been continuing
in that zone for more than 12 years. [Passage omitted]

The introduction of a peacekeeping contingent to Nagornyy Karabakh
is possible if Armenia and Azerbaijan ask Russia about this. That’s
the view of Konstantin Kosachev, the chairman of the [State] Duma
Committee on International Affairs.

[Kosachev] The situation in Nagornyy Karabakh remains very complex.

In the context of a settlement in [Nagornyy] Karabakh, Russia is not
pursuing any kind of aims of its own. We are ready to support any
compromise and any solution that would suit both the Azerbaijani and
the Armenian sides and we promote a direct dialogue between Armenia
and Azerbaijan on Nagornyy Karabakh in every way – if there is a
mutual need and a mutual agreement of the sides.

[Presenter] Kosachev again stressed that you can introduce a contingent
into the disputed region only under the condition that there is a joint
appeal to Russia from Baku and Yerevan. For his part, Sergey Ivanov did
not specify when peacekeeping forces might appear in Nagornyy Karabakh
and what their composition might be. At 1535 [Moscow time, 1135 gmt] we
will be discussing this subject on the phone in the daytime programme
“Razvorot” [“Development”] with the first president of Azerbaijan,
Ayaz Mutalibov.

Republicans Know They Have No Votes And Never Had

REPUBLICANS KNOW THEY HAVE NO VOTES AND NEVER HAD

Lragir.am
01 June 06

The government failed to have the National Assembly vote for the bill
on accountability of businessmen for tax evasion. The present coalition
no longer holds the majority in the parliament, but the reason for
the failure of the bill was neither this nor the aspiration of the
parliamentarians to achieve lawfulness in the economic sphere. The
president is said to have been forced by the recent home political
developments to take fundamental measures to keep control over the
situation. The fiasco of the government and namely the Republican was
a show conveying to the Republican Party and the prime minister that
they no longer have political influence.

By the way, an unprecedented opinion poll ordered by the Republican
Party and Serge Sargsyan in 2003, which has aroused a tremendous
retrospective interest among politicians and journalists, suggested
that the rating of the Republican-Serge Sargsyan alliance was below
5 percent. Nevertheless, this alliance held the majority in the
parliament. By the way, the same survey confirms that the collapse of
the coalition was not out of order. The same survey suggests that the
rating and the votes the Orinats Yerkir Party got were consistent,
and under the Republican the votes of Ardarutiun Alliance were
seized. Hence, the news in press that Andranik Margaryan is looking
for support for future is not just for fun.
