BAKU: Azerbaijani FM: UN resolutions are basis for settlement of Karabakh conflict

APA, Azerbaijan

The resolutions passed by the UN Security Council are basis for the resolution of the Armenia-Azerbaijan Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov said at his meeting with UN Secretary General António Guterres, APA reported.

He regrettably added that these resolutions remain unfulfilled by Armenia.

Mammadyarov emphasized the importance of continuation of substantive negotiation for resolution of the conflict.

The Azerbaijani foreign minister also spoke about the UN role in the efforts to find a peaceful solution to the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, which is a threat to peace and security in the South Caucasus region.

The Nagorno-Karabakh conflict entered its modern phase when the Armenian SRR made territorial claims against the Azerbaijani SSR in 1988.

A fierce war broke out between Azerbaijan and Armenia over the Nagorno-Karabakh region of Azerbaijan. As a result of the war, Armenian armed forces occupied some 20 percent of Azerbaijani territory which includes Nagorno-Karabakh and seven adjacent districts (Lachin, Kalbajar, Aghdam, Fuzuli, Jabrayil, Gubadli and Zangilan), and over a million Azerbaijanis became refugees and internally displaced people.

The military operations finally came to an end when Azerbaijan and Armenia signed a ceasefire agreement in Bishkek in 1994.

Dealing with the settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict is the OSCE Minsk Group, which was created after the meeting of the CSCE (OSCE after the Budapest summit held in December 1994) Ministerial Council in Helsinki on 24 March 1992. The Group’s members include Azerbaijan, Armenia, Russia, the United States, France, Italy, Germany, Turkey, Belarus, Finland and Sweden.

Besides, the OSCE Minsk Group has a co-chairmanship institution, comprised of Russian, the US and French co-chairs, which began operating in 1996.

Resolutions 822, 853, 874 and 884 of the UN Security Council, which were passed in short intervals in 1993, and other resolutions adopted by the UN General Assembly, PACE, OSCE, OIC, and other organizations require Armenia to unconditionally withdraw its troops from Nagorno-Karabakh.

IRELAND – Ireland’s Eurovision song may not have been a big hit in the competition but there was one positive for Brendan Murray. The former Hometown singer was beaten in the semi-final of the competition with his song “Dying to try”. However, while Europe didn’t love the song, one eastern European country certainly did.

Speaking on TV3’s The Six O’Clock Show Brendan revealed that his single had gone to number one in Armenia surprisingly. He said: “Funnily enough, my single was actually number one in Armenia, number five in Slovenia and number 11 in the viral charts in Belgium. I didn’t believe that I’d got to number one in Armenia when I was first told, but then I saw it and I was like ‘that’s ridiculous, so weird’”.

The Galway man also left the door open for him to perform at next year’s contest but said to win it is very tough nowadays. He explained: “It’s such a different competition now and it’s going to get bigger every year, from what I’ve heard. There was a Chinese delegation there this year. It’s getting so big. There wasn’t 42 countries competing back in the 1990’s when Ireland did well.”

If Brendan does decide to go again next year he will be hoping that more countries like Armenia will be big fans and at least get him to the final. Ireland have not made it to the final since back in 2013.

Emmanuel Macron commemorates Armenian Genocide

French presidential hopeful Emmanuel Macron has marked the 102nd anniversary of the Armenian Genocide in a brief ceremony in Paris, Euronews reports.

Macron laid a wreath and observed a minute’s silence in memory of the victims.

If elected president of France in the second round of the country’s election, Macron has vowed to continue the fight for full international recognition of the atrocity as a genocide.

Speaking to Nouvelles d’Armenie before the Sunday vote  Emmanuel Macron pledged to continue the tradition to commemorate the Armenian Genocide if elected.

“The date of 24 April is a strong symbol: it commemorates the murder of 600 Armenian intellectuals on 24 April 1915 in Constantinople and the beginning of the first genocide. This is an important moment for the duty of memory and for the friendship between France and Armenia. I intend to continue this tradition by participating in the commemorations. I am also in favor of a day of commemoration of the Armenian Genocide being included in our calendar,” Macron said.

“In France, the penalization of the denial of the genocide could not be obtained and the decision of the Constitutional Council provoked much misunderstanding. I am convinced that we must continue to work in this direction. Law and memory cannot be incompatible,” the presidential candidate said.

Macron, a centrist with pro-business, pro-European views, will face far-right leader Marine Le Pen in the May 7 runoff of the presidential election.

Manchester United edges Southampton to win League Cup

Zlatan Ibrahimovic scored with three minutes remaining to give Manchester United a thrilling 3-2 victory over Southampton in the EFL Cup final,  Goal.com reports.

A dramatic contest at Wembley was settled when Ibrahimovic headed in Ander Herrera’s cross just as the match appeared destined to move into extra-time.

A controversial and thrilling match saw Southampton have Manolo Gabbiadini’s strike wrongly ruled out for offside before Ibrahimovic struck with an impressive free-kick at the other end.

Jesse Lingard got the second, finding the bottom-right corner after a neat team move to net on his third consecutive Wembley appearance for United, before Gabbiadini got a goal that did count in first-half stoppage time.

Gabbiadini made it five goals in three Saints matches with a magnificent finish early in the second half, but Ibrahimovic had the last word with his 26th goal of the season.

United have now won the tournament on five occasions, a record bettered only by Liverpool.

Mourinho claims the first major trophy of his United reign and his fourth overall victory in the competition, tying the record jointly held by Brian Clough and Alex Ferguson.
