Global strike and demonstrations in Catalonia. Live

Today, there is a global strike in Catalonia again,  demanding the release of politicians in the country.

To remind, former Catalan leader Carles Puigdemont and four former ministers were freed with conditions by an investigating judge in Belgium sveral days ago.

Puigdemont and ministers voluntarily surrendered to the Belgian police when Madrid disbanded the Catalonian government, putting direct government in the  autonomous region, and made a decision to arrest them, which was mandatory in all European Union member states. Eight other officials of the Catalonian government have been detained, interrogation, one of which was released on bail.

The Spanish Supreme Court blames Puigdemont and its administration officials for riots and wasting budgetary means. On November 17, the Belgian court will consider the issue of Puigdemont’s extradition.

The people consider them political prisoners.

The strikers blocked the roads, the highway leading to France, some routes of high-speed trains.

The Armenian Apostolic Church celebrates today the Feast of the Holy Translators – Sts. Mesrob, Yeghishe, Moses of Khoronk, philosopher Davit Anhaght, Gregory of Narek and Nerses the Gracious (Nerses of Kla). The feast is celebrated from October 3 to November 7.

The Feast of the Holy Translators is one of the most favorite and beloved national-ecclesiastical feasts for the Armenian people, Qahana.am reports.

Nearly two hundred disciples of St. Mesrob Mashtots and St. Sahak are known by the general group name “Holy Translators”. The disciples of the above mentioned group of Holy Translators are known as “Junior Translators”.

Celebrating this feast, the Armenian Apostolic Church pays tribute of respect to the bright memory of St. Mesrob Mashtots, Yeghishe, Moses of Khoronk, philosoppher Davit Anhaght, whose sacred work and mission later has been continued on by St. Gregory of Narek and St. Nerses the Gracious. The word “Translator” means "Interpreter”.

Comprehending and precisely understanding the demands of that period, the Holy Translators initiated the sacred work of creating the Armenian alphabet and literature. By the strength of their faith they dispersed the darkness and warmed the human souls. Thanks to the Holy Translators the Holy Bible was translated into Armenian and the Armenian peoples obtained the possibility to read the Holy Book in the native language. By means of their activity, the Holy Translators contributed to the spiritual-cultural awakening of Armenia. After the translation of the Holy Bible, many books of Church Father were translated into Armenian, and thanks to this fact many translations, the original copies of which haven’t been preserved, presently exist only in the translated variant and thus the translations have obtained the value of the original.

Film on Armenian genocide to be shown in Cyprus

Cyprus Mail
Oct 14 2017

The Promise, a 2016 film set in the final years of the Ottoman Empire, is coming to Cyprus, and with it a chance to get to know more about the Armenian genocide carried out by Turkey 100 years ago.

The film is about a love triangle which develops between Mikael (Oscar Isaac), an Armenian medical student, Chris (Christian Bale), a Paris-based American journalist, and Ana (Charlotte Le Bon), an Armenian-born woman raised in France, immediately before the Armenian genocide. It was a box office bomb, grossing just $10 million against its $90 million budget, although the studio noted the main purpose of the film was to bring attention to the story, not make money.

This is precisely what the Armenians in Cyprus want to achieve.

“It is very important for us [Armenians] because we are the result of this political historical action. The fact that I live in Cyprus and 70 to 80 per cent of Armenians live outside Armenia is because we are refugees.”

Aynedjian explained that this is much like the story in the film where refugees miraculously survive in the end.

“We all have such a story, because those who don’t are dead,” he added.

In the film, the American ambassador pleads with the Ottoman leadership to stop the war, receiving the reply that there is no war, only the relocation of a group of people.

There was in fact, Aynedjian said, no war, which is the fighting between armies, but a genocide, and people literally got away with murder for which they were until now not held accountable.

According to the Armenian representative, the aim of the film is not to be vindictive but to bring about a political closure. At the moment the borders between Turkey and Armenia are closed, and relations are bad.

“People need to start a dialogue to free Turkey from its guilty past and Turkey needs to make amends.”

Many states have by now acknowledged the genocide, aided by information from the internet and social networking, but there are people who still want to supress the information, Aynedjian said.

When the film premiered in Canada to an audience of 3,000 people, he added, it was voted by 56,000 as 1 out of 10 on IMDb, badmouthing it, although only the original group could have seen it.

‘The Promise’ was first shown in Nicosia at an advance premiere for government officials and on Thursday the press was invited to watch it. It will be screened daily in Cineplex cinemas around the island.

Griffon vulture hunt is a criminal offence – Armenian environment minister

ARKA, Armenia
Oct 5 2017

YEREVAN, October 5. /ARKA/. Artsvik Minasyan, Armenian environment minister, speaking Thursday at a regular cabinet session, said griffon vulture hunt is a criminal offence.

Earlier, a photo of three men in battledresses with two killed griffon vultures was posted in social networks.

The men have already been identified by the police. The police said that the picture has been taken before 2013, since the number plate on the car on the photo was outdated.

“We reacted very quickly yesterday to the illegal action,” Minasyan said. “It is already known that the incident happened long ago, persons on the photograph are already identified and the police is doing whatever is necessary…”

In his words, such cases are not rare and the hunt of red-booked animals and birds is mainly due to insufficient awareness and the lack of eco culture.

”If people had understood that the griffon vulture is a rare kind of birds, which is one of Armenia’s eco values, some of them would have refrain from doing that,” Minasyan said.

He said punishment for such offences should be tightened.

”We think the law should be reconsidered and tightened significantly, and fines should be increased even regardless of some citizens’ complicated social status,” Minasyan said. –0—

Lapshin pities Azerbaijani high ranking law enforcement officers who
appeared in stupid situation due to Azerbaijani authorities

YEREVAN, SEPTEMBER 21, ARMENPRESS. Alexander Lapshin, who was arrested
in Azerbaijan, has told how the Azerbaijani law enforcement officers
interrogated him and appeared in a stupid situation, ARMENPRESS
reports Lapshin wrote about this in his personal blog.

“The best investigators of Azerbaijan were involved in my case –
Colonel Kamal Talibov (the son of the former president of Azerbaijan’s
supreme court), Colonel Vugar Nasibov, chief of investigation
department, General Illar Ahmedov and Deputy Prosecutor General Rustam
Usubov. They are the best investigators in this oil-rich country. They
spoke good Russian and made unnecessary and funny quotes from the
films “Kidnapping,Caucasian Style” or “Mimino” and did everything to
persuade me that I can be saved only if I confess that I work for the
special services of Armenia and Russia. It should be noted the
emphasized hostility towards the Russian Federation during the
investigative activities. I really could never imagine that they could
bring forward such ridiculous and unfounded accusations against the
Russian Federation”, the blogger wrote.

Lapshin stressed that the Azerbaijani authorities put those high
ranking and professional policemen in a stupid situation by forcing
them to do ridiculous and useless job.

“They asked me the same question 10 times. The problem is that the
Azerbaijani authorities put those people in a stupid situation. When
high ranking policeman Colonel Talibov came to the penitentiary
institution every day like a child and asked the same question about
my “working” for the Armenian special services we just pitied him. He
probably had understood that I have nothing to do with any special
service, but it was demanded from higher echelons to launch a
demonstrative process and he did his job”, Lapshin wrote.
