Charles Michel`s statements not law for us – David Babayan

ARMINFO
Armenia – June 20 2022
Marianna Mkrtchyan

ArmInfo. The EU has its geopolitical agenda, Foreign Minister of the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic (NKR) David Babayan stated at the presentation of the book  entitled “Karabakh conflict and foreign policy of Republic of  Artsakh” as he commented on today’s statement by Toivo Klaar, EU  Special Representative for the South Caucasus and the crisis in  Georgia, who welcomed Azerbaijani President lham Aliyev’s statement  at the Global Baku Forum.

“We should not take offence at anyone. We should admit the facts. Let  them say their own things, and we are going to say our own. We must  adhere to our principles and wee can speak of that. Thee point is  that we must adhere to our principles. As soon as we show  faint-heartedness, make a mistake, it will be the end,” Mr Babayan  said.

“I think the ties some democratic states have with Azerbaijan clearly  show a global moral and psychological crisis. And the argument that  democracies do not war against each other and that democracy cannot  be ‘placed at the disposal’ of authoritarian states – but we can see  an entirely different picture. so we should bee realists and remain  vigilant, s much depends on a small state,” Mr Babayan.

In this context, he recalled the statement by President of the  European Council Charles Michel. And the harsh response by Artsakh  made Toivo Klaar issue a statement, claiming that Mr Michel’s  statement was misinterpreted.

“Much depends on us. Of importance is our own conduct and policy. We  should not underestimate our potential much less lose heart,” he  said.

As to a possibility of his book being translated into English and put  on Charles Michel’s table, Mr Babayan said that both the President of  the European Council and others must on regular occasions hear  messages from Artsakh before the book is translated.

“And you must know that Charles Michel’s statements are not a law for  us, as it is struggle for existence.  We are not insulting him, we  have not such a right. But we are saying to him in a civilized  manner: well and good, it is your opinion, but we do not share it. If  anyone thinks we have no alternative, such people are profoundly  mistaken. There is always an alternative as geopolitics itself offers  such alternatives. And vacuum is never formed in important regions,”  Mr Babayan.

In a statement by the head of the  European Council following a  meeting with the leaders of Armenia and Azerbaijan on June 22, on the  issue of transport communications, it  is noted that the leaders  agreed on the need to start unblocking  transport communications.  “They agreed on the principles governing  transit between western  Azerbaijan and Nakhijevan and between  different parts of Armenia  through Azerbaijan, as well as  international transport through the  communication infrastructure of  both countries. In particular, they  agreed on the principles of  border management, security, land fees,  as well as customs rules in  the context of international  transportation. In the coming days, the  vice-premiers will continue  this work,” Michel said.  At the same  time, Charles Michel’s  statement does not say a word about the status  and future of  Nagorno- Karabakh. Moreover, in his statement, the head  of the  European Council, instead of the generally recognized term   Nagorno-Karabakh, used the Azerbaijani term “Karabakh” and the   wording “Armenian ethnic population of Karabakh.” In addition, his   statement does not mention any trilateral agreements at the level of   the leaders of Armenia, Azerbaijan and Russia, or other generally   accepted principles of settlement.

AUA to co-host 5th Armenian Genealogy Conference in September

YEREVAN — The fifth Armenian Genealogy Conference will be held in Armenia this fall.

Since 2016, four conferences devoted to Armenian genealogy have been held in the United States. As was the case with so many events worldwide, the global pandemic required postponement of the conference for over two years. This year, for the first time ever, the Armenian Genealogy Conference will be hosting its annual assembly in Armenia. The conference is cosponsored by the Hamazkayin Cultural Association and the American University of Armenia (AUA) during the weekend of September 23 to 25.

Building on the foundation set by previous conferences, the program will consist of sessions devoted to the genealogy of Armenians from different regions. The resources available to Armenians tend to be very geographic specific, and thus, experts are generally regionally focused. The sessions will be informative as well as pragmatic, providing practical tools for all genealogists, regardless of their level of experience. The working languages of the conference will be Armenian, English and Russian. Simultaneous interpretation will be available.

“AUA is incredibly excited to co-host and organize the fifth Armenian Genealogy Conference, especially as the University is launching an undergraduate course on genetics in the fall of 2022,” said Dr. Sharistan Melkonian, AUA’s dean of General Education. “We look forward to welcoming participants to explore their family histories as well as the extensive research available in tracing lineages.”

Conference presenters include Dr. Haroutune Armenian, Dr. Sonya Mirzoyan, Dr. Rafael Abrahamyan, Dr. Hayk Hakobyan and George Aghjayan.

Dr. Armenian has had a long and distinguished career in academia, including over 10 years as president of AUA (1997-2009). He will speak about the Armenian parish microfilm collection of the Latter-day Saints Family History Library. Dr. Armenian was one of the first to research this underutilized material in the study of infant mortality, widowhood and other patterns of mortality.

Dr. Abrahamyan is chairman of the Armenian Historical and Genealogical Society and one of the primary initiators of the first journal devoted to Armenian genealogy (whose first volume was published this year). His published articles touch on both medieval and modern Armenian genealogy. He will present on the genealogy of Artsakh: sources, methodology and the history of its study.

Dr. Hakobyan is a senior researcher at the Institute of Archaeology and Ethnography in Yerevan specializing in epigraphy, theology, Caucasian studies and codicology. While genealogical research during medieval times is thought to predominantly focus on aristocracy, Dr. Hakobyan notes that the phenomena of remembering family trees and ancestors were typical of medieval Armenians. His presentation will aim to rediscover the role of lithographs and memoirs in the field of Armenian genealogical studies.

Dr. Mirzoyan has been working in the Armenian National Archives for over 30 years, over 10 of which she spent as director. The Armenian National Archive is largely an untapped, yet indispensable, resource for genealogists. Her presentation will cover the photographs, official documents and memoirs contained in the archives.

Aghjayan is the founder of the Armenian Genealogy Conference and has been involved in the planning of each of the previous conferences. He writes frequently for The Armenian Weekly and Houshamadyan on various aspects of Armenian genealogy and the demographics of Western Armenia. Aghjayan will present on Ottoman population registers and their usage and value in Armenian genealogical research.

Additional speakers will be announced in the coming weeks.

Registration for the fifth Armenian Genealogy Conference is open and available to the public on the conference website

As a young boy, Charlie escaped the Armenian genocide by stowing away in a trunk bound for the United States. His family was not so lucky. Despite his tragic start, as an adult, Charlie has managed to maintain his child-like wonder for the world. However, like so many refugees and orphans, there’s a hole in Charlie’s big heart. Our story begins in 1947, as Charlie repatriates back to Armenia only to be greeted by the harsh reality of Soviet Communism. The soul of Armenia has been suffocated beneath the iron curtain. Almost immediately Charlie is arrested and sentenced to prison for the absurd crime of wearing a tie. To further ensure that he doesn’t influence other prisoners with his “cosmopolitan” ways, Charlie is placed in solitary confinement. Just as he appears to be succumbing to the terror of his situation, Charlie discovers that the prison wall outside his cell window had been damaged during a recent earthquake.

Armenian Studies Scholar and Linguist Shushan Karapetian

Los Angeles – June 17 2022
IN THE GREEN ROOM

Shushan Karapetian is the deputy director of the USC Institute of Armenian Studies. Her research focuses on the intersection of language and transnational Armenian identity. She also hosts a podcast series “Language Therapy with Dr. K.” Before speaking at a Zócalo/Soraya event, “How Do Homelands Cross Borders?,” she spoke to us in the green room about Pagan goddesses, the Goddess of Pop, and her most used Armenian word.

Q:

What is one of the best places in L.A. to find Armenian culture?

A:

Abril Books in South Glendale, hands down. The name means “to live.” It has the largest collection of Armenian books from both Armenia and the diaspora. The owner is the son of the original founder, who had a real vision of keeping literature alive in the diaspora. Besides the collection, the environment is very special. I basically donate my paycheck to that store, to my husband’s chagrin.

Q:

If you could have lunch with any person—dead or alive—who would it be?

A:

I have two. One would be Hrachia Acharian who was the preeminent Armenian linguist, whose work I use on a daily basis for my word-of-the-day series. The other would be Sergei Parajanov, the Armenian filmmaker from the Soviet era. He basically revolutionized film, and has these films that are more like collections of mosaics glued together.

Q:

What is your favorite holiday?

A:

New Year’s. That’s a Soviet legacy, and I’m owning it. We also have this amazing holiday Vardavar where we just splash each other with water at the end of July. Initially, it was in honor of the goddesses in the Pagan pantheon, but then Christianity subsumed it. It’s the one day in Armenia where all social rules and norms are off—whether you’re in a business suit or bridal gown or bathing suit: you will get splashed with water.

Q:

What is one of your most used Armenian words?

A:

“Jan,” which is of Persian origin. It means spirit, body, soul. It’s come to mean a term of endearment. The closest word in English is “dear,” but that’s so not right. If I’m watching a performance and I’m moved and want to show my appreciation, I will say “jan” with an elongated vowel. It has a variety of uses. Some Armenian purist is going to be really annoyed that I chose a Persian origin word here.

Q:

What are some ways you think people try to preserve cultures across generations?

A:

I would replace the word “preserve” with “cultivate.” Preserve already implies it’s dead or dying—you preserve pickles, you put them in a jar in an unchanging state. Whereas culture is a living thing that is evolving at all times. I think language is the main key that unlocks access to culture, and you can unlock it on your own terms, access what you please. Music, dance… food is probably the most versatile and universally accessed: third and fourth generation Armenian Americans who don’t speak a lick of Armenian, who go to church once or twice a year, are obsessed with the food. Language is really important but doesn’t tend to survive as long—music and food and dance go a long way.

Q:

Would you rather watch a reality show based on the Kardashians or Cher, the Goddess of Pop?

A:

Cher. When I was in my late teens, Cher was having a concert in Las Vegas and my family decided to go, because she’s Armenian, obviously. This is the early 2000s, the era of Britney Spears. Cher comes on stage sitting on an elephant. She slides off the elephant and grabs the mic and says: “All this new talent—the Christina Aguileras and Britney Spears’ of the world—they’re amazing. I’m impressed.” I thought: I never knew her to be so humble. Then she takes a dramatic pause and says: “Follow this, you bitches.” My mom asked me to translate.

Armenia President: Russian side admitted during internal discussions that they had not fulfilled their obligation

News.am
Armenia –

We had problems in the direction of Parukh village [of Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh)] in February-March. Under circumstances that have not yet been clarified and in the presence of Russian peacekeepers, the Azerbaijanis were able to capture a certain peak. President Vahagn Khachaturyan of Armenia said this during a meeting with the representatives of the Armenian community of Russia.

“I also participated in those discussions. We expressed a very tough position, and as a result of that position, the Russian side ultimately admitted that there is a shortcoming there. Now they are conducting an internal investigation to find out what the reason is. But they admitted during internal discussions that they had not fulfilled their obligation,” he added.

According to Khachaturyan, the situation was so tense that the people of Artsakh had said that if the Russian peacekeepers could not ensure their security, they will return to Armenia.

“The response of the Russian side was that they are obliged to ensure the security of the people; ‘we will do everything so you can live safely.’ They can even submit investment projects; they are ready to fund them.

After that, there have been no territorial conflicts; on the contrary, a number of meetings have taken place, including on the European platform—in Brussels. There, too, [Azerbaijani President Ilham] Aliyev indulged himself, after which [President of the European Council] Charles Michel had corrected him that this issue had not been discussed. It is about not using the word ‘Nagorno-Karabakh,'” Khachaturyan said.
