Argentina’s historic House of Independence marks Armenian Genocide Centennial

(Agencia Prensa Armenia) -Casa de Tucuman (House of Tucuman),  a historical Argentinean building and museum was illuminated with the colors of the Armenian flag for the Armenian Genocide Centennial on Friday, May 15.

Casa de Tucuman is a national historic monument in Argentina, because it was the place where the Argentine Declaration of Independence was signed on July 9, 1816.

The artistic impression, which also featured music and poetry reading, was organized by the Historical House Museum of Independence, the National Institute Against Discrimination, Xenophobia and Racism (INADI), a body chaired by Pedro Mouratian, and the Armenian National Committee of South America.

“Genocide is the most extreme form of discrimination and the awareness of society is essential to prevent the recurrence of these crimes against humanity,” said Guillermo Ferraioli, Coordinator of INADI.

“Under Law 26,199, Argentina declares April 24 as the ‘Day of Action for Tolerance and Respect between Peoples’ in commemoration of the genocide against the Armenian people,” added in turn Gustavo Diaz Fernandez, member of INADI Tucuman.

Madres de Plaza de Mayo joined the act through a letter signed by Sarah Mrad, in which she stressed that “we cannot be absent in this commemoration with the Armenian people.”

Armenian President says NK peaceful resolution has no alternative

Armenian President says NK peaceful resolution has no alternative

I don’t see any alternative way to the peaceful resolution of
Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan stated in
his interview to `Ria Novosti’.
To the question how the President would describe the ongoing stage
over the resolution of the conflict, Serzh Sargsyan said he could
evaluate those processes as a general working process.
`That is a conflict, which means that struggle, negotiations are held,
and the conflict resolution depends on all the sides, including
Nagorno-Karabakh, Azerbaijan and Armenia. The Minsk Group has an
important mediating role,’ S. Sargsyan said.
He underscored, the NK people have been trying to make the historic
injustice right through peaceful and legal norms, which has been
profoundly opposed to annihilate the NK people.
`The peaceful activities of NK people have been opposed by armed
usage, by the war stipulated by the Azerbaijani side. In those
difficult days, Karabakh people could get united and protected their
lands, women, children and the retired. The war, that wasn’t our
choice, we just didn’t have any other possibility, we needed to be
defended. I don’t see any other alternative to the peaceful resolution
of NK conflict.’ Serzh Sargsyan said.
Serzh Sargsyan stated that Yerevan is intended to continue
negotiations with Baku mediated by the MG. `We are ready to support
direct communication between Baku and Stepanakert, since the key to
the conflict resolution is, first of all, in Nagorno-Karabakh,’
President Sargsyan said.

Ted Bogosian And His Untruths About Monte Melkonian

Ted Bogosian And His Untruths About Monte Melkonian
By Ara Manoogian

hetq online

17.04.2 010

17 years following his martyrdom in Artsakh, Armenian national hero
Monte Melkonian is once again a victim of defamation. I came across a
very interesting interview on Radio Open Source with an Armenian
decorated filmmaker and documentarian Ted Bogosian. The subject of the
interview was Ted’s vocation – seeking the truth and telling it. Open
Source host Christopher Lydon introduced Ted Bogosian as a truth hound
and put the ‘what is truth’ question to him (see:
confessions-of-a-truth-hound/).
What I heard in response less than halfway through the interview led
me to think that Ted may have misheard Christopher, thinking he had
been asked ‘what is a lie’ or, for that matter, how to present a lie
as truth.

As someone committed to truth seeking, I was at first thrilled to
learn about an alternative experience from a prominent Armenian until
I heard the following statements made by him:

"In Armenian Journey there is a very important sequence which didn’t
make the cut. And that is that I started to pursue an interview with
a young man of my age and background named Monte Melkonian. And Monte
was born in about the same year, in the central valley of
California. And while I was at Duke, he was at Berkley, and when I
went to graduate school, he went to graduate school in Beirut. And he
was pursuing the truth about the Genocide in his own way and he became
radicalized and he went underground and started selling arms and
started selling drugs and started an Armenian terrorist movement. And
so while I was making Armenian Journey, he was in jail in France, for
having masterminded several bombings in Europe, at Orly Airport and at
Turkish embassies and other businesses, where many innocent people
were killed. And so, I went to see Monte in prison, and it was quite a
moment, because he thought that I was there to kill him since he
didn’t know who I was and wasn’t expecting a visitor that day. But I
came to start corresponding with him and came to understand his
manifesto, and I realized that what he was doing was similar to what I
was doing except in a different theater. And so, my battle was against
the media to try to tell the story one way, and his battle was more
traditional. So, that didn’t make the cut because I wouldn’t have been
able to get the film on television had I presented that manifesto. But
I mention it because I want to say that I think this sort of thing is
in the blood not only of Armenians but of people who want to tell the
truth and, that is, they’re willing to go there no matter where it
leads." (The audio fragment is at 09:16-11:36).

Having devoted over a decade of my life researching Monte Melkonian’s
brief and thorny path, it was especially saddening for me to hear such
irresponsible and defaming statements coming out of a fellow truth
seeker’s mouth. These statements manifest shoddiness of research,
sweeping generalizations and a self-indulgent distortion of recent
Armenian history. I would like to see one single piece of evidence
that supports Mr. Ted Bogosian’s claim that Monte Melkonian was a drug
dealer, arms dealer and a founder of a terrorist movement, who
masterminded the Orly operation. These are the three major things
against which Melkonian had been struggling with all his essence,
endangering his life in the process. It was the Orly operation that
catalyzed the split of Armenian Secret Army for the Liberation of
Armenia (ASALA). To be more specific, below I have singled out each of
Ted Bogosian’s inaccurate claims. Let’s start from the most innocent
inaccuracies.

Ted Bogosian’s claim #1: `And Monte was born in about the same year.’

Ted Bogosian was born in 1951, whereas Monte Melkonian was born in
1957.

Ted Bogosian’s claim #2: `…and when I went to graduate school, he
[Monte Melkonian] went to graduate school in Beirut.’

Monte Melkonian was admitted to a graduate school at Oxford, but chose
to give up his academic career in favor of a trip to Beirut at the
onset of the second phase of the civil war and joined the defense of
Bourj Hammoud, the Armenian quarter of the city.

Ted Bogosian’s claim #3: `…and [Monte Melkonian] started selling
arms and started selling drugs…’

All the accounts of people who knew him, whether interviewed by me or
other researchers, including those who spoke up at their own
initiative, indicate that Monte was adamantly opposed to drugs, be it
for use or for sale. Throughout my research, I haven’t come across any
evidence of Monte being involved in arms or drug dealing. According to
one of Monte’s brothers-in-arms, once Monte, already a Commander of
Martuni Defense Region, refused Samvel Babayan, Commander of the
Nagorno-Karabakh Defense Army, to promote an officer only because he
smoked marijuana. He had even banned his soldiers from using alcohol,
which was common practice in other detachments. More importantly,
Monte earned himself highly influential enemies after burning
lucrative cannabis fields in a noble attempt to shut down the local
drug trade. This deed was followed by a few attempts on his life. One
might assume that Monte could use the proceeds from supposed drug
sales to feed and equip the poorly armed fighters under his
command. All evidence indicates that he had ignored any such
compromise.

Ted Bogosian’s claim #4: `…he [Monte Melkonian] started a terrorist
movement.’

This is an outright false statement. ASALA, to which Ted Bogosian
refers, was founded in 1975 in Beirut, Lebanon during the first phase
of the Lebanese Civil War by Harutiun Takoshian, alias Hagop
Hagopian. This was 3 years before Monte arrived in Lebanon for the
first time. Monte was recruited by ASALA in 1980 after serving in an
Armenian militia group in the Beirut suburb of Bourj Hammoud helping
defend the Armenian population during the civil war. Furthermore,
based on the accounts of both supporters and opponents of ASALA, Monte
played a pivotal role in the violent split of the organization in 1983
into those who supported the despotic leader Hagop Hagopian and those
who disapproved his methods of struggle exactly because it took
innocent lives, as well as distracted the attention from the cause the
attacks were supposed to raise awareness of.

Ted Bogosian’s claim #5: `…he [Monte Melkonian] was in jail in
France, for having masterminded several bombings in Europe, at Orly
Airport and at Turkish embassies and other businesses, where many
innocent people were killed.’

A sweeping generalization. Monte Melkonian was arrested for possession
of a falsified passport and an illegal handgun in Paris on November
28, 1985. He was sentenced to six years but served only three and a
half. The Orly airport attack, which took place on July 15, 1983, and
did kill and wound many innocent people, was masterminded by his
already archenemy Hagop Hagopian and carried out by the latter’s
supporters in Paris. The only people tried for the Orly airport attack
were Varadjian Garbidjian (also spelled as Varoujan Garabedian life
sentence, released 17 years later), Soner Nayir (15 years), Ohannes
Semerci (10 years). Parallel to the preparation of the Orly operation,
inner turmoil was in progress within ASALA due to the widening gap
between the members of the organization over the despotic leadership
of Hagopian, the methods of struggle and, specifically, the
implementation of the Orly attack. Monte was in the opposition
wing. But despite his efforts to cancel the Orly operation, it was
implemented, accelerating the final split of ASALA.

Who knows, the Karabagh war could have been a lost cause, had Monte
Melkonian been the mastermind of the Orly airport attack and therefore
gotten a life sentence? Melkonian was arrested twice. In his court
documents there was neither evidence, nor allegations supporting
Mr. Bogosian’s announcement regarding his participation in the attack
in any form, as well as arms and/or drug dealing. It would have been
convenient for the French authorities and to Monte’s enemies to find
such evidence, but there was none. To support my claim, I suggest that
interested individuals read The Right to Struggle, My Brother’s Road,
Reality, A Self Criticism and a dozen other books.

Ted Bogosian’s claim #6: `I went to see Monte in prison, and it was
quite a moment, because he thought that I was there to kill him…’

Okay, let me try to get this straight. Monte thought that Mr. Bogosian
came to the prison to kill him? So, Mr. Bogosian is saying that Monte
thought an Armenian-American filmmaker was going to walk into a high
security prison, formerly a concentration camp, armed guards watching
his every move, and kill him? What about checking for weapons before
entering the highly guarded visiting room? Ted Bogosian makes it sound
like Monte was in a health spa in the South of France.

I provided my arguments as accurately as I could and am willing to
embrace supporting evidence that proves Mr. Bogosian’s
claims. Otherwise, as a friend of mine put it, Mr. Bogosian’s
interview is more like "Ted talking about Ted – not the truth." I
welcome facts, as they will enrich our knowledge about who Monte
really was. With that said, I invite Ted Bogosian to set the record
straight by exchanging his recollections with evidence and
facts. Otherwise a public apology from Ted Bogosian is in order.

Filming has begun on the second season of Enfusion, a Contender-esque
reality show focused on kickboxing. Dubbed "Test of the Champions",
the 2010 edition features 18 fighters from around the world, all in
the 70 kg MAX division. There are definitely some interesting names in
the mix, including MAX star Gago Drago, top Thai prospect Pajonsuk,
Armen Petrosyan, and Sahin Yakut. Drago in particular stands out,
both due to his high profile as a popular fighter, and his large
personality, which should make for compelling TV.

The fighters are divided into 4 teams and coached by different
fighters. Unfortunately, Melvin Manhoef, who was initially tagged as
a coach, was forced to drop out to focus on his Strikeforce bouts. A
complete list of fighters and coaches can be found after the jump.

All fighters and coaches are currently in Thailand, and shooting
has begun. Some interesting pictures have already been released,
including photos from some of the fights. Click here for a photo
gallery, and here for a promo video.

At this time, there is no news on the show being broadcast in the US,
and all European broadcasting news is still in progress.

Star-divide FIGHTERS: Pajonsuk (Thailand), Rick Barnhill (England),
Armen Petrosian (Italy), Vuyisile Colossa (South Africa), Mikael
Lallemand (France), Cyrus Washington (USA), Sucz Barnabas (Romania),
Sahin ‘Kaas’ Yakut (Turkey), Goran Aleksic (Serbia), Jan Van Denderen

Maximum Tariffs For Wholesale Internet Fixed For Dominating Particip

MAXIMUM TARIFFS FOR WHOLESALE INTERNET FIXED FOR DOMINATING PARTICIPANTS IN THE MARKET IN ARMENIA

ArmInfo
2009-11-18 14:59:00

ArmInfo. Public Services Regulatory Commission of Armenia (PSRC) has
fixed maximum tariffs for transit of the international IP-traffic
(wholesale Internet sales). The tariffs have been fixed for the
dominating participants in the market – ArmenTel CJSC (subsidiary of
the Russian VimpelCom) and Fibernet Communication LLC.

According to the investigation by PSRC, these companies held 53,9%
and 46,1% of the indicated market, respectively (based on the data
for the 1st half year, 2009). According to the decision, the companies
should leave 10% of their cables’ carrying capacity as a reserve. The
decision takes effect on January 1, 2010. The decision does not cover
the third supplier of external Internet in Armenia – GNC Alfa Company,
as this company is not registered as a dominating market player (the
company started its activity on October 15, 2009). The maximum tariff
per 1 MB/sec will be calculated by the formula 374 x E x 28820, where
E is the Armenian dram rate to US dollar, published by Central Bank
on the day 25 of the month preceding the reporting month, and 28820 –
is the operator’s margin (in drams). The figure 374 derived as 280,4
(the average traffic purchase price abroad) divided by 0,9 ( with
account of 90% of the potentially acting cable capacity) multiplied
by 1,2 (with account of 20% of VAT). So, the maximum tariff per 1
MB/sec, calculated at 384,68 AMD/$1, published by CB on October 26,
will make up 172,69 thousand drams, or about $450.

Currently, ArmenTel’s tariffs for wholesale Internet per 1MB/sec vary
from 431,4 thousand drams (during purchase of 1 MB) to 306 thousand
drams (during purchase of 77824 – 102400 MB), VAT inclusive. Fibernet
tariffs make up 251 thsd drams (during purchase of 1 – 100 MB/sec) and
231,6 thsd drams (during purchase of 101 -155 MB/sec), VAT exclusive.

Correspondence between leaders of the ruling party and the main
opposition is likely to produce a key meeting next week regarding
the ongoing efforts to solve the Kurdish question and end terrorism.

The prime minister also made a statement about Republican People’s
Party, or CHP, leader Deniz Baykal’s letter inviting him to a
face-to-face meeting on the condition that it be aired on television.

"To me it’s a positive step. We’ll elaborate (the invitation for a
meeting)," Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Tuesday at his
party’s parliamentary group meeting. Addressing Baykal’s six-page
letter, the prime minister said: "I am currently not in the position
to evaluate the content of this letter. We’ll do it when we meet. But
I have said I do not want to say anything about the content of the
letter to the media. I hope Mr. Baykal will agree," Erdogan said.

In the letter, Baykal addressed a 2007 meeting held with Erdogan
and former Chief of General Staff Gen. YaÅ~_ar Buyukanıt. The prime
minister alluded to a comparison made by Baykal.

"I believe the comparison is wrong," Erdogan said, adding that meetings
between prime ministers and generals are often misunderstood. "The
new meeting will be different. Each of us will make statements after
the meeting," he said.

Erdogan said Parliament would discuss the matter further in an
open session in the coming weeks. "We are not talking behind closed
doors. We will share any developments with the public. We do not want
to run the process secretly," he said.

Baykal, in his address to parliamentary lawmakers Tuesday afternoon,
described the meeting as historical and crucial. "I am aware of this
fact. I wish the pr istakes to his face. I will disclose all of what
you have on your mind," Baykal said.

Recalling that he had expressed his concerns in his letter sent to
Erdogan, Baykal denied that "the meeting will be the one in which
Erdogan informs the main opposition about the motives of the move. Why
do you hide your road map from the public? The CHP will not help you
disguise your road map," he said.

Baykal said his condition for the meeting was that it "was not the
sort of reunion that could be kept secret from the people. We’ll
kindly welcome Mr. Prime Minister and we’ll show all our respect to
him at our headquarters."

Bahceli slams CHP

The correspondence between Erdogan and Baykal seems to have disturbed
the Nationalist Movement Party, or MHP, which has been most vocal
against the government-led Kurdish initiative. "Mr. Baykal is about
to become the Prime Minister’s co-pilot on his journey to destroy the
unity of the country. The troika of destruction will be established
with Mr. Baykal’s participation in the process," MHP leader Devlet
Bahceli said in an address to his party.

"Recording the meeting will not save Mr. Baykal," he said.

On the other hand, the leader of the pro-Kurdish Democratic Society
Party, or DTP, repeated his call to Baykal to fully back the Kurdish
initiative. "We want Baykal to leave his fear-based policies behind,"
he said in Parliament. Turk also said it was the right time to consider
submitting essential constitutional amendments for consideration
by referendum. "We need a comprehensive amendment to this current
Constitution. That’s the only way to make the country more democratic,"
he said.

PM calls for softer rhetoric

Criticizing the Nationalist Movement Party, or MHP, for the language
it used against the ruling party, the prime minister asked all parties
to embrace "a more contributive approach in the new legislative year."

"Let’s make this legislative year a year of dialogue, democratic
maturity, and good relations. A democratic soci uld have dialogue
and consensus. It must tolerate different opinions. You cannot shake
clenched fists," he said.

Erdogan said some people continue to benefit from the ongoing
terrorism in the country and that it is an issue that is hindering the
government’s efforts to solve the problem. "We have begun a journey to
stop what is happening regarding terrorism. We will succeed. Though
terror has its own economy, new democratic initiatives will disrupt
it."

Armenian move slammed as well

The signing of the historical protocols with Armenia was also on the
agenda of the opposition parties.

"Wouldn’t we be at a different point today if the Minsk Group
had spent the same amount of energy on solving Nagorno-Karabakh
as it did on trying to open the border between Turkey and
Armenia?" Baykal said. Criticizing the government for putting the
ball in Parliament’s court, he said: "It’s far from sincere. Did you
sign the protocols? Yes, you did, so why are you now changing your
course?" asked the main opposition leader.

Bahceli, for his part, reiterated that his party would never support
such a move until the problems with Azerbaijan are solved by an
Armenian withdrawal from occupied Azerbaijani territories.

* SIGNING OF TURKEY-ARMENIA PROTOCOL IN ZURICH

A crisis erupted during signing of two protocols on the establishment
of diplomatic ties and development of relations between Turkey and
Armenia in Swiss city of Zurich on Saturday.

Turkish diplomatic sources said that a dispute over the final
statements which the parties would make at the end of the ceremony
escalated tension between the two parties.
Foreign Minister Micheline Calmy-Rey of Switzerland met Turkish
Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu prior to the signing ceremony and
