Rep. Clark Statement on 107th Anniversary of the Armenian Genocide

Watertown –

Assistant Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives Katherine Clark (MA-5) released the following statement to mark the 107th Anniversary of the Armenian Genocide, which is Sunday, April 24, 2022. Last year, President Joe Biden declared that the Ottoman Empire’s killing of 1.5 million Armenians was an act of genocide, an official recognition that Clark has supported throughout her career in Congress. Watertown, in Massachusetts’ Fifth Congressional district, is home to the third largest Armenian community in the United States.

“As we mark the 107th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide, we recognize this dark chapter in our world’s history and renew our commitment to preventing atrocities of this magnitude from ever happening again. The Armenian Genocide is not an opinion – its facts are undisputed, and the legacy of this trauma cannot be erased. These crimes against humanity must be remembered and spoken about truthfully if we are to heal and learn from history.

“My own Congressional district is home to Watertown, Massachusetts, a hub of Armenian life and culture. I have had the privilege of getting to know many members of the Armenian community, and their strength and resilience is an example to us all. I will continue to stand shoulder to shoulder with the Armenian people to fight for truth, justice, and a recommitment to peace.”

Clark is an original cosponsor of the Armenian Genocide Education Act, new legislation to give teachers across the United States the resources they need to educate students on the atrocities of the Armenian Genocide and the consequences of intolerance and hate.

AUB students participated in the prominent Harvard World Model United Nations 2022 conference that was held on Zoom this March, debating the world’s most pressing global matters, simulating roles of representatives of UN agencies and bodies.

Harvard World Model United Nations (WorldMUN) is the world’s most internationally diverse college-level MUN conference, and the largest outside of the United States and Canada. Every year, 2,000+ currently enrolled university students from over 110 countries attend WorldMUN in a different location around the world.

At this event that brought together delegates from the world’s most prominent universities, three students represented AUBMUN, a student organization that organizes simulations of United Nations conferences and sends delegations representing AUB to international conferences. Two out of those three students received awards for their distinguished participation and skills. Diplomacy Award (outstanding delegate), which is the highest possible prize based on diplomacy and lobbying skills, was presented to AUB student Elie El Hajj. And AUB student Marina Markarian was presented with Verbal Commendations, an honorable mention granted based on eloquent language and well researched topics.

“Having the chance to attend Harvard WorldMUN was one of the most challenging conferences I have ever had the pleasure of attending,” commented Marina Markarian. “The ongoing debate in the Human Rights Council were heated and fast-paced with incredible delegates taking the initiative to get their point across. It was a tough four days of ongoing work starting with debating and then moving on to resolution discussions but the week ended on a high note.”

Markarian added that despite it being a virtual conference, “we had the opportunity to meet people from all over the world present to deliberate and resolve the conflict at hand. We represented AUB to the best of our abilities and brought home our awards, Diplomacy Award and Verbal Commendation, making us proud to be part of the AUBMUN traveling team.”

“As head delegate, I had to set the bar very high and motivate our representatives by leading by example. The odds weren’t in our favor as we were only three about to participate in the biggest and most prestigious MUN conference in the world,” said Elie El Hajj. “However, life taught me when something is important enough, you do it even if the odds are not in your favor. We competed against students of the pedigree of Harvard, Stanford and MIT and we were still able to win two distinguished awards.”

YEREVAN, APRIL 13, ARMENPRESS. Armenia has a perception that Azerbaijan will release more Armenian captives and negotiations in this direction continue, Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan said in parliament, speaking about the Pashinyan-Aliyev-Michel trilateral meeting in Brussels.

“The issue of the missing persons and the release of captives and other detainees is in our primary focus. It is the subject, topic and target of our everyday work, every hour. I can’t recall any serious discussion or meeting where this topic wasn’t brought up. Yes, to this day Azerbaijan has not fulfilled the obligation it assumed under the November 9 trilateral statement on immediately releasing all prisoners of war, captives and other detainees. By bringing forward different pretexts, then linking the issue with the minefield maps, although the November 9 statement doesn’t have any such correlation, then bringing other pretexts, and now Azerbaijan attempts to link the issue with the issue of searching for those missing in the first Karabakh war,” FM Mirzoyan said.

The FM emphasized that these issues have nothing to do with one another. And the Armenian side, nevertheless, as a sign of goodwill, has done and continues doing many humanitarian steps and expects a similar conduct from Azerbaijan, both for humanitarian reasons and because it is simply Azerbaijan’s obligation under the agreement.

“As expected this subject was discussed during the latest meeting between the Armenian Prime Minister, the Azerbaijani President and the [President of the European Council] Charles Michel. And there is a perception that a new group of Armenian captives must be released. We now continue negotiating over this,” the FM said.

Mirzoyan said there are many mediations in this matter because the issue is of highly humanitarian nature. He reminded that Russia, France and the US have continuously offered mediations and each of them at a given period of time recorded success, but also other colleagues like Charles Michel’s office, Hungary.

Expert: Aliyev’s ‘long-cherished dream’ came true

Armenia – April 9 2022

Karen Vrtanesyan, a security expert and coordinator of the military news website Razminfo, says the dissolution of the OSCE Minsk Group dealing with the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict is a “long-cherished dream come true” for Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev.

“Aliyev’s long-cherished dream to destroy the institution of the OSCE Minsk Group co-chairs came true,” Vrtanesyan wrote on Facebook on Saturday.

“It happened for one, so to speak, objective reason (the confrontation between Russia and the West) and one subjective reason, which is Nikol [Pashinyan]. It was another chance ruined by the consistent efforts of Nikol,” the expert said.

At a joint news conference with his Armenian counterpart on Friday, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said that the United States and France had stopped working with Russia within the framework of the OSCE Minsk Group.

“I don’t know what fate awaits the Minsk Group, since our so-called French and American partners in the group, in a Russophobic frenzy, have canceled the trio of the OSCE Minsk Group co-chairs, saying that they will not be communicating with us in this format,” he said.
