Armenia appellate court dismisses attorney general’s office appeal of Kocharyan presumption of innocence case Armenia appellate court dismisses attorney general’s office appeal of Kocharyan presumption of innocence case

YEREVAN. – The Criminal Court of Appeal of Armenia has dismissed the appeal of the Prosecutor General’s Office against the ruling of a first instance court into the case on the Special Investigation Service (SIS) chief’s violation of the presumption of innocence of second President Robert Kocharyan, his attorney Hayk Alumyan told Armenian News-NEWS.am.

During the investigation, Kocharyan’s lawyers had argued that SIS chief Sasun Khachatryan had made several statements in violation of the presumption of innocence of the second President.

Alumyan had petitioned to a court of first instance to rule that Robert Kocharyan’s rights had been violated because of these statements. And in February, this court had granted the attorney’s motion, but the attorney general’s office had appealed this decision.

Second President Robert Kocharyan is charged with overthrowing the constitutional order in Armenia in connection with the tragic events that occurred in capital city Yerevan in March 2008, and taking a particularly large bribe.

On March 1 and 2, 2008 the then authorities of Armenia used force against the opposition members who were rallying in downtown Yerevan, and against the results of the presidential election on February 19, 2008. Eight demonstrators as well as two servicemen of the internal troops were killed in the clashes.

The second President has been arrested three times.

Kocharyan was taken into custody for the third time on June 25, when the Criminal Court of Appeal ruled to once again arrest him—who had earlier been released on the personal pledge by the former and incumbent Presidents of Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh), overturned the first instance court ruling to suspend the proceedings of the case against Kocharyan and several other former senior officials—in connection with the aforesaid events in Yerevan, and sent the case for a new examination.

Lydian provides update on Armenian government review of report

PanArmenian, Armenia
Aug 22 2019

PanARMENIAN.NetLydian International Limited confirmed Thursday, August 22 that Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan of Armenia stated in a post to social media that he asked the Ministry of Environment on August 21, 2019 to review a report from the Special Investigative Committee of the Republic of Armenia (SIC) relating to the Amulsar Project.

The SIC Report reviews Lydian’s response to the recommendations by Earth Link & Advanced Resources Development contained in its report to the SIC on the Amulsar Project. Lydian understands that the ME’s review is directed toward whether there may need to be any further Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) conducted in respect of the Amulsar Project. Lydian has received no official confirmation of either the Prime Minister’s request of the ME or the scope or duration of any review to be conducted by the ME.

Edward Sellers, Interim President & CEO of Lydian International, commented: “The Prime Minister made clear public statements after receiving the Audit Report and Lydian’s Response affirming that: a) there is no basis on which to prevent the Company from completing and operating the Amulsar Project; and b) the Company will be permitted to do so. Indeed, the Prime Minister lauded the Amulsar Project publicly for its standards of environmental stewardship and indicated the Government of Armenia would be requiring other mines in Armenia to move toward that standard.”

“To hear that the Prime Minister has asked for consideration of whether any additional EIA process is required in respect of the Amulsar Project is more than disappointing, particularly after the Prime Minister’s recent public statements. Lydian has been subject to three environmental audits over the past year during which there was no suggestion that any additional EIA process would be required.”

Sellers continued: “The SIC Report substantiated that the recommendations contained in the Audit Report had already been addressed or are contemplated in the management plan Lydian submitted as part of the EIA process that resulted in Lydian being awarded its mining rights. Neither the SIC Report or the Audit Report suggest that there are design changes to the Amulsar Project which might require a new assessment.”

“Lydian has not changed the design of its intended construction or operation of the Amulsar Project from that which was contemplated in the original EIA process. Indeed, construction on the Amulsar Project in accordance with its permits was over 75% complete when the illegal blockades commenced. The suggestion that anything more would be required of Lydian in that regard is unfounded.”

Lydian is a gold developer focused on construction at its 100%-owned Amulsar Project, located in south-central Armenia. However, illegal blockades have prevented access to Amulsar since late June 2018. Amulsar is expected to be a large-scale, low-cost operation with production targeted to average approximately 225,000 ounces annually over an initial 10-year mine life. Estimated mineral resources contain 3.5 million measured and indicated gold ounces and 1.3 million inferred gold ounces as outlined in the Q1 2017 Technical Report. Existing mineral resources beyond current reserves and open extensions provide opportunities to improve average annual production and extend the mine life. Lydian is committed to good international industry practices in all aspects of its operations including production, sustainability, and corporate social responsibility.

Sweden Riksdag Speaker explains why large delegation is in Armenia Sweden Riksdag Speaker explains why large delegation is in Armenia

The Kingdom of Sweden was one of the first countries that responded to the democratic processes that began in Armenia. This is what Speaker of the National Assembly of Armenia Ararat Mirzoyan said while making a joint statement with Speaker of the Riksdag of the Kingdom of Sweden Andreas Norlén today.

“It is our honor to host the representative delegation led by the Speaker of the Parliament of Sweden in Armenia. I believe this is Sweden’s position and approach on and to the revolutionary changes and democratic processes that have taken place in our country. I believe it is important to say that the Kingdom of Sweden was one of the first countries that responded to the democratic processes that began in Armenia, and there have been many reciprocal visits to and from Sweden and Armenia. I myself was in Sweden on an official visit at the invitation of the country’s parliamentary speaker in June. After all these meetings, the Swedish government eventually made an amendment to a relevant document and created the opportunity to expand financial assistance to Armenia,” he stated.

Ararat Mirzoyan also stressed that Sweden was part of the program through which international partners would support the electoral system in Armenia. “The program is in the works, and I believe we will sign a memorandum in September. During our meetings, I have expressed gratitude to the parliamentary speaker for the Swedish parliament’s ratification of the EU-Armenia Comprehensive and Enhanced Partnership Agreement,” Mirzoyan said.

According to Armenia’s parliamentary speaker, there are many examples of the launch of active dialogue between the parliaments of both countries.

In his turn, the Speaker of the Riksdag expressed gratitude for the cordial reception. “We have arrived with a large and representative delegation, and this happens only once in the course of four years during every electoral cycle. I am here with my deputies and the heads of the political parties represented in parliament. We want to express our support to the velvet revolution that took place in Armenia and the reforms in Armenia’s parliament. We are ready to continue supporting the democratic reforms in Armenia in several directions such as democracy, rule of law, environmental protection, gender equality and more,” he stated.

Collector coins are made of precious metals and are issued to present to the society the national, international, historical and cultural, spiritual and other values of the country, to immortalize these values in the metal and to meet the demands of the numismatic market.

Like any other currency the collector coins have face value which makes them the means of payment. However, the face value of these coins is much lower that their cost price which includes the cost of the precious metal used for manufacturing of the coin, mintage and other expenses. Low face value and high cost price allow these coins to be considered as the items of collection and not the means of payment used in money circulation. The collector coins have also the sale price set by the Central Bank of Armenia.

As the items of collection the collector coins are issued in very restricted quantities and are not reissued.

Numismatists, collectors and all interested persons can buy the Armenian collector coins in the sales salon “Numismatist” which is in the building of the Central Bank of Armenia and is open for everyone.
