Soccer: Finland 1 Armenia 0

FINLAND 1 ARMENIA 0
Sportinglife.com, UK
Nov 16 2006
Finland saw off a spirited Armenia display to claim all three points
and storm to the summit of Euro 2008 qualifying Group A on Wednesday.
HJK Helsinki’s veteran forward Mika Nurmela nodded the only goal of
the match within the opening 10 minutes as the hosts rarely broke
sweat in the sub-zero conditions.
The result, Finland’s third win from five games this campaign, sees
Roy Hodgson’s men hold a one point advantage over second-placed Serbia,
while Armenia remain second from bottom with a solitary point to show
for their four games.
Ahead of the game, the only major adaptation either side had to make
– aside from Finland having to cope without injured talisman Jari
Litmanen – was the use of an artificial pitch, but there was nothing
cosmetic about the nitty-gritty style of this game.
Finland’s Markus Heikkinen made the point within the opening two
minutes, crunching into Romik Khachatryan, before Armenia’s Aghvan
Lazarian underlined it with a hack on Mika Vayrynen.
The game soon settled, however, and the hosts showed their attacking
prowess – Toni Kallio heading narrowly wide and Vayrynen testing
Gevorg Kasparov’s reactions with a stinging drive from 20 yards.
In between Levon Pachajyan managed to call Jussi Jaaskelainen into
action at the other end, but Finland remained on top and hit the opener
on 10 minutes when 34-year-old Nurmela nodded Jonatan Johansson’s
chip into the bottom corner.
Vayrynen then added his miscued chance to the couple wasted by
Aleksei Eremenko as the hosts chased their second of the evening,
but the game was becoming more about strength than style.
Armenia briefly flirted with the latter, Hamlet Mkhitaryan’s corner
craftily deflected goalwards by Armen Shahgeldyan, but like the other
chances gone before Finland had little trouble dismantling the attack.
After the break, shooting from distance came into fashion, Joonas
Kolkka, Lazarian and Levon Pachajyan trying their luck from outside
the box, but neither goalkeeper had cause to be concerned until
Kasparov parried Johansson’s close range effort in the 77th minute.
Armenian frustration began to show and was promptly rewarded with
two yellow cards, but they were less aggressive in front of goal and
succumbed to their third defeat of the campaign.

ANKARA: France not Invited to 2007 Defense Industry Fair

France not Invited to 2007 Defense Industry Fair

France has not been officially invited for the 8th International
Defense Industry Fair 2007 (IDEF ’07), which will be held in Turkey.
Following a statement from the Turkish Land Forces commander saying
that military ties with France had been suspended, a second concrete
reaction to the French parliament’s passage of a controversial draft
bill on Armenian genocide claims came from the Turkish government.
France has not been officially invited for the fair, Turkish National
Defense Minister Vecdi Gonul told press members on Thursday at a
meeting for the introduction of IDEF’07, which is set to be held in
May 2007.
This move is seen as an apparent reaction to the French National
Assembly’s adoption of a draft bill making it a crime to deny that
Turks committed genocide against Armenians during World War I.
Gonul remarked that, however, an announcement was made for French
companies, adding that the participation of French companies in the
fair was something different.
French Military Attache Jean Claude Gea left the meeting immediately
after Gonul’s statement.
On Wednesday, Turkish Land Forces Commander Gen. Ilker Basbug said
that Turkey had suspended military relations with France, adding that
currently “There are no high-level [military] visits between the two
countries,” he added.

TWO NEW BOOKS PUBLISHED IN ANTELIAS
The Catholicosate of Cilicia in Antelias recently published two new books
with the generous sponsorship of the Armenian Department of the Calouste
Gulbenkian Foundation. Both publications will be important assets in their
respective fields.
“Yegharnabadoum” comes to add one more title to the endless painful
depictions of the horrors of the Armenian Genocide. It belongs to the group
of publications that seek to bring to life this awful crime against
humanity. Reading this volume unleashes an uncontrollable quest for revenge
from the inhuman architects of the Armenian Genocide.
The author of the book Koujgan Sepasdyo, originally Garabed Kapigian, who
describes in detail the unspeakable massacres he witnessed in his hometown
of Sepasdia. Kapigian, who later became a teacher, dedicates his work to
Armenian children. “On the path of blood, what has wounded my heart most has
been the torture of the Armenian boy, his ruthless destruction. Therefore, I
decided to dedicate my “Yeghernabadoum” to his eternal memory and by that
water my heart that is tormented by is fire,” writes Kapigian, hoping that
God will take vengeance on the monstrous committers of the Genocide.
The book is an important contribution to the Armenian nation’s pursuit of
Armenian Genocide recognition and justice.
The second publication, “Hotvadzner yev Ousoumnasiroutiounner” (Articles and
research), is a valuable contribution to explaining the theology, rituals,
services, concepts, traditions and laws of the Armenian Church.
The book is a compilation of important articles and research papers by
Bishop Paren Melkonian of the Cilician Brotherhood, collected from
previously published periodicals and particularly “HASK”, the official
periodical of the Catholicosate of Cilicia. V Rev. Fr. Krikor Chiftjian is
the editor of the new book.
Alongside the author’s biography, V. Rev. Fr. Chiftjian writes about the
timeliness of the new publication: “We are certain that the ecclesiastical,
religious and historical articles will prove useful for the Armenian
believer, whether he is spiritual or lay, by enriching his intellectual
knowledge. Also, before any meetings on the reform of the Armenian Church,
it is essential to read all the ecclesiastical and canonical articles of
this publication in order to be guided by their traditional, constructive
and guiding arguments.”

Belarusian President Demands Fair Price For Turning Gas Transport Ne

BELARUSIAN PRESIDENT DEMANDS FAIR PRICE FOR TURNING GAS TRANSPORT NETWORK OVER TO RUSSIA
Kyiv Post, Ukraine
Nov 13 2006
MINSK, Belarus (AP) – President Alexander Lukashenko on Monday
raised the stakes in Belarus’ growing spat with Russia over natural
gas prices, saying Moscow should pay market prices if it is still
interested in taking over part of Belarus’ gas transport system.
Moscow and Minsk are at loggerheads over gas prices, with Russia
seeking to hike prices fourfold to $200 per 1,000 cubic meters – a
hike that would dramatically pinch Belarus’ inefficient Socialist-style
command economy.
Moscow, which has raised prices for several former Soviet republics,
has indicated it could compromise if Belarus hands over 50 percent
of its pipeline transporting Russian gas to western Europe.
Lukashenko, who traveled to Moscow to meet with President Vladimir
Putin last week, said the Belarusian national gas transport company,
Beltransgas, could be worth $17 billion – far more than the $800
million price Russian gas monopoly OAO Gazprom said the company
was worth.
He has said Belarus should not pay more for gas than what Ukraine
and Armenia pay. Armenia currently receives gas at $100 per 1,000
cubic meters.
“We are ready to form a joint venture with Russia,” Lukashenko said.
“And since Russia is talking about supplying oil and gas to Belarus
at market prices, we will be doing this under market conditions.”
Lukashenko and Putin signed a deal in 2001 setting up the joint
venture, but completion of the deal has been tied up as Gazprom has
sought to raise gas prices.
After Friday’s meeting, the Kremlin issued a statement saying that
economic ties between Russia and Belarus must be built on “mutually
beneficial terms based on market principles.”
