Russia says destroyed IS headquarters in Al-Latamna suburb

More than 50 warplanes and helicopters are part of an air group of Russia’s Aerospace Forces conducting airstrikes on the positions of the Islamic State terrorist group in Syria, Russia’s Defense Ministry spokesman Igor Konashenkov has said, TASS reports.

“The air group was deployed in the shortest time. We managed to do that as the main materiel supplies and ammunition were in the material-technical facility in Tartus. We only had to relocate aviation and bring some equipment,” Konashenkov said.

Russia’s Aerospace Forces launched the operation against the Islamic State gunmen in Syria on Wednesday.

As Gen. Igor Konashenkov told the journalists, modernized Su-24M and Su-25 fighter jets are deployed in the aviation unit of Russia’s Aerospace Defense Forces formed in Syria.

“More than 20 sorties were made targeting eight facilities of ISIL [Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant – former name of Islamic State terrorist organization] terrorist groups. Modernized Su-24M and Su-25 jets with modern aiming systems were among the aircraft that made sorties,” Konashenkov said.

Last night, the Russian Aerospace Forces attacked four Islamic State facilities in Syria.

“Strikes were made during the night on 4 facilities of Islamic State. The Sukhoi Su-24M frontline bombers and Su-25 attack aircraft made eight sorties,” he said.

“A stronghold of terrorist groups and ammunition depot near the city of Idlib were destroyed, as well as a three-level command post of militants near the settlement of Hama,” Konashenkov said.

“An explosives and ammunition production plant was completely destroyed after being directly hit by a bomb to the north of the city of Homs,” he noted adding that “precisely at this location, cars were stuffed with explosives and then used for terrorist attacks, including by suicide bombers.”

Aurochs or no Aurochs? The latest finding in Lake Sevan

Fossils recently recovered from the bottom of Lake Sevan may come to refute earlier beliefs that no aurochs or bisons lived in Armenia.

The at the intersection of Large and Small Sevans at the depth of 6-7 meters could be part of a backbone of a prehistoric animal.

Specialists say a DNA test is needed to establish the facts. They warn, however, that the test will completely destroy the fossil.

Rafael Mkrtchyan, Head of the Diving Department of “AYAS” Nautical Research Club says they have found a lot of items at the bottom of Lake Sevan over years, but never a bone.

Members of the club conduct the research on their own, but say government support is needed.

To preserve the remains it’s necessary to establish a museum and find funds for future research, they say.

David De Gea’s Real Madrid move collapses

David De Gea’s  move from Manchester United to Real Madrid has collapsed because the necessary paperwork was not submitted in time, the BBC reports.

No official announcement has yet been made by either club.

As part of the deal to sell De Gea to Real, United were planning to bring Keylor Navas in the opposite direction.

There is no precedent for Spanish clubs being given additional time to conclude transfers as there is in England.

Blame for the failure to complete the deal is already being apportioned.

Fabio Capello quits as Russia head coach

Fabio Capello left his post as Russia coach Tuesday after a poor run of form put the 2018 World Cup hosts in danger of failing to qualify for next year’s European Championship,

The Russian Football Union said it had reached an agreement with Capello “to end the labor contract by mutual agreement.” The organization did not disclose the financial terms of the settlement but expressed gratitude to Capello for his work.

Capello leaves after three years in charge of Russia’s national team. He had planned to coach Russia at the World Cup in 2018, but came under pressure when his team failed to get out of the group stage at last year’s tournament in Brazil. He also faced criticism from Russian politicians over the size of his salary, a reported 7 million euros ($7.7 million) a year.

He has won only two of his last 10 competitive matches, including a 1-0 loss to Austria last month that left the team in danger of failing to reach Euro 2016. Russia is third in its qualifying group, outside the automatic qualification places.

The 69-year-old Italian, who has also coached England, AC Milan and Real Madrid, has previously said he expected Russia to be his final job in soccer.

Charles Aznavour to play in London in November 2015

Charles Aznavour, one of France’s most eminent singer-songwriters, is still touring, and it’s been announced  that on 3 November he’ll be playing at the Royal Albert Hall, reports.

Aznavour will be performing a selection of his greatest hits, and with his back catalogue of a staggering 294 albums it’s not like he doesn’t have a choice of them.

The singer’s longevity is remarkable; he was first performing at the age of nine, and was given his first break by none other than Edith Piaf. He’s also a fine actor, turning in a lovely, bittersweet performance as Charlie, the misfortunate title character of Truffaut’s gleeful 1960 homage to film noir, Shoot the Piano Player.

Born Shahnour Varinag Aznavourian in Armenia in 1924, he moved to France in the 40s but he’s a hero in his mother country; in the wake of the devastating Armenian earthquake of 1988 he set up a charity, Aznavour for Armenia, and besides being the Armenian ambassador to Switzerland, Aznavour is Armenia’s permanent delegate to the UN in Geneva. Staunchly anti-racist, he ralled support for Jacques Chirac against Jean-Marie Le Pen in the 2002 French elections, and his 1976 song ‘Ils sont tombés’ (‘They fell’) is about the Armenian Genocide.
