Passion Week in Baku

PASSION WEEK IN BAKU
Yerevan. May 29. ArmInfo. The former co-chair of the OSCE Minsk Group,
Ambassador Vladimir Kazimirov has provided ArmInfo news agency with
his response to the actions of the Azeri side following his recent
statement in Yerevan.
It’s worth mentioning that Kazimirov’s statements concerned the
principles of territorial integrity and the right of the peoples for
self-determination, as well as the militant statements made by
official Baku. In connection with this, the Foreign Ministry of
Azerbaijan called the temporary charge d’ affaires of RF in Azerbaijan
and Deputy Foreign Minister expressed oral complaint to him. Besides,
Novrouz Mamedov, head of Foriegn Affairs Department at AR President’s
Staff, gave a press conference and stated that V. Kazimirov “lost the
ability to think logically.” He also condemned the diplomat for “close
relations with the Armenians” and “getting financial assistance from
them.” Mamedov said that Kazimirov’s statements may make harm to the
Nagorno Karabakh settlement process.
In his response to the Azeri side, the former co-chair of the OSCE MG
says: On May 20, the high ranked Azeri officials spared no efforts to
make good advertisement to Mr. Kazimorov, resigned ambassador, former
head of the Russian mediators’ group for Karabakh, the one who helped
all the sides in conflict cease the bloodshed 12 years
ago. Mr. Kazimirov wonders whether the Azeri officials are going to
response all the statements of retired diplomats. While none of the
Moscow officials responses the anti-Russian statements of a retired
official like Vafa Gouladze or Asim Molladze. At the same time, it’s
very hard to treat the response of Mamedov seriously, Mr. Kazimirov
said.
According to Mr. Kazimirov, Mamedov got irritated by the interview of
the former “peacekeeper,” where “he sometimes falsifies international
documents.” Mr. Mamedov began spreading the rumors he read, not
realizing that the journalists are capable of writing such things that
a beginner diplomat may never compose. Certainly, Mamedov didn’t find
out who was the author of the statements, the retired diplomat or the
journalist who interviewed him. Meanwhile, on May 18, Mr. Kazimirov
demanded from the agency to remove from the site the unknown text that
Mr. Kazimirov failed to correct. Mamedov didn’t even realize that he
should have criticized quite another text at the same sight already
edited by Mr. Kazimirov.
According to Mr. Kazimirov, Mamedov can think only about money and
market relations. And as Mamedov can think only about money, he lost
respect to even the old people. As a result, he expressed opinion that
the Armenians pay Kazimirov for persecuting Azerbaijan. At the same
time, Mamedov didn’t ground his statements with any sensible and
logical proofs.
Mamedov also touched upon another very serious point. It turned out
that Mamedov was “the invisible witness” of the conversation between
Heidar Aliev and Vladimir Kazimirov on May 20, 1993, as he stated that
he saw and heard everything. In fact, Mamedov wasn’t present at that
meeting.

BAKU: Armenian officers not to attend CIS meeting in Azerbaijan

Armenian officers not to attend CIS meeting in Azerbaijan
Mediamax news agency
30 May 06

Yerevan, 30 May: Armenia will not take part in the forthcoming session
of the Council of CIS Defence Ministers to be held in Baku on 31
May. The Azerbaijani authorities have not produced security guarantees
to the Armenian delegation members, Mediamax has quoted the Armenian
Defence Ministry as saying. “As the secretariat of the Council of CIS
Defence Ministers failed to get security guarantees from the
Azerbaijani authorities for the Armenian Defence Ministry delegation,
they decided not to take part in the Baku session. This has been
reported to the secretariat of the Council of CIS Defence Ministers.
“This is another evidence of the fact that Azerbaijan is not able to
fulfil its commitments and ensure security of participants in the
international event being held on its territory. For its part, the
secretariat of the Council of CIS Defence Ministers, must ensure that
equal conditions are created for the participants from all CIS member
countries at the session. We are waiting for the secretariat’s
official reaction,” the Armenian Defence Ministry said in its
statement.
[ANS radio, Baku, in Azeri, 0500 gmt 30 May 06, reported that Armenia
had not even been invited because Azerbaijan notified the Council of
CIS Defence Ministers that an Armenian delegation was unwelcome in

Armenian Soldier Killed In Fresh Skirmish On Azeri Border

Armenian Soldier Killed In Fresh Skirmish On Azeri Border

By Emil Danielyan
Armenia’s Defense Ministry reported on Monday that one of its
soldiers has been fatally shot in what it described as a truce
violation by Azerbaijani forces in the tensest section of the
Armenian-Azerbaijani border.
The ministry said in a statement that Sergeant-Major Levon Adamian,
20, was wounded in the chest and died as he was rushed to hospital
late on Saturday. It said the incident occurred near the northern
Armenian town of Noyemberian. No other details were reported.
Adamian is at least the second Armenian soldier killed in the area
bordering Georgia since February. Skirmishes between Armenian and
Azerbaijani troops deployed there appear to have become more frequent
in recent months, with each side accusing the other of breaching the
ceasefire. The Azerbaijani military did not report any fighting in
the westernmost section of the heavily militarized frontier in recent
days, though.
According to the Azerbaijani news agency APA, an Azerbaijani soldier
was wounded and hospitalized on Saturday about 300 kilometers east of
the area, along the main Armenian-Azerbaijani line of contact around
Nagorno-Karabakh. The information was not immediately confirmed by
the Defense Ministry in Baku. The ministry said earlier that a
19-year-old Azerbaijani army conscript, Egdar Hajigayibov, was shot
and killed by Armenian forces near a village just north of Karabakh
on May 17.
The latest upsurge in Armenian-Azerbaijani shootouts followed the
collapse of long-awaited talks between Presidents Ilham Aliev and
Robert Kocharian near Paris last February. The two leaders are
scheduled to meet again in Bucharest early next week amid fresh hopes
for a breakthrough in the Karabakh peace process.
High-ranking diplomats from France, Russia and the United States
sounded cautiously optimistic about the outcome of the summit as they
wrapped up a two-day visit to Baku and Yerevan last Thursday. In a
joint statement, they said the conflicting parties are now `at the
point where a mutually beneficial agreement is achievable.’

Young Armenian’s Killing Near Moscow May Be Race-Related
MosNews
Prosecutors have opened a hate crime investigation into the fatal
stabbing of an Armenian teenager at a Moscow suburban train station,
a spokesman for the prosecutor’s office said Tuesday. Artur
Sardaryan, 19, was killed on Thursday in the latest in a string of
racially-motivated attacks in Moscow and throughout Russia, The
Associated Press reports.
Three young men approached Sardaryan as he was sitting on a commuter
train around 11:30 p.m. and stabbed him for no apparent reason. He
died later on the way to a hospital, Yelena Rossokhina, a spokeswoman
for Moscow regional prosecutors, told journalists.
Lawyer Simon Tsaturyan said that witnesses reported the youths
yelling `Glory to Russia!’ and `Long Live Russia!’, Ekho Moskvy radio
said.
Russia in recent years has seen an increase in racially-motivated
attacks on foreigners and migrants from the poorer Caucasus region
and Central Asia. Last month, a skinhead fatally stabbed an Armenian
student on a central Moscow subway platform.
