TEHRAN: Gholam Shire’I: Iran May Never Give In To Bullying Powers

GHOLAM SHIRE’I: IRAN MAY NEVER GIVE IN TO BULLYING POWERS
Persian Journal, Iran
Sep 14, 2006
Visiting speaker of mullah-run majlis, Gholam Ali Haddad Adel known
as “Gholam Shire’i” in majlis for his addiction to opium, said in a
meeting with Armenian President Robert Kocharian in Yerevan on Tuesday
that the Iranian government may never surrender to the bullying powers.
Also during the meeting, Gholam Shire’i noted Iran’s nuclear case
and reminded that Tehran has always insisted on the settlement of the
issue through negotiations, a statement released by the Information
and Media Department of the Islamic Consultative Assembly said.
Appreciating the logical stances of Armenia in the face of Iran’s
nuclear issue, he reminded that some great powers are seeking an
excuse while mullahs’ regime still stresses the need for the peaceful
and logical solution of the case.
The top “shire’i” legislative official pointed out, “The United States
is angry at the victory of the Islamic Revolution in Iran because it
is against the hegemony of the US. That’s why they are still speaking
of overthrowing the Islamic Republic after 27 years since the victory
of the Islamic Revolution.”

Azerbaijan Should Not Try To Transfer Karabakh Issue To Another Plan

AZERBAIJAN SHOULD NOT TRY TO TRANSFER KARABAKH ISSUE TO ANOTHER PLANE
PanARMENIAN.Net
14.09.2006 17:30 GMT+04:00
/PanARMENIAN.Net/ Armenian FM Vartan Oskanian considers inclusion of
the issue on protracted conflicts in the territory of GUAM participant
states in the UN General Assembly agenda “senseless expenditure of
energy.” “In spite of the UN GA General Committee turning down the
issue, the GA decided to include it in the agenda by one vote more in
favor of the proposal,” Oskanian told journalists in Yerevan Thursday.
“We believe that it is necessary to focus on the Minsk process if we
want to attain results. If there are other goals, Armenia will not
enter those games,” he underscored. There are serious proposals on the
bargaining table today and “if Azerbaijan is serious on the talks,
it should concentrate on the Minsk process and not try to transfer
the issue to another plane. It will not do good,” he said.

UN general Assembly, the GUAM states (Georgia, Ukraine, Azerbaijan,

organization a new issue concerning the lingering conflicts in the

conflicts.
Anyway, according to RA Foreign Ministry, the above issue wasn’t
included on the agenda. Ukraine and Moldova voted for the issue,
while Armenia and Russia objected that.

Syria Accuses USA of Provoking Terrorism

SYRIA ACCUSES USA OF PROVOKING TERRORISM
By Petros Keshishian
AZG Armenian Daily
15/09/2006
The Embassy of Syria to Washington accused USA of provoking terrorism,
extremism and anti-American moods in the Middle East.
As for the September 12 attack on the US Embassy in Damasks by
extremists, Syrian diplomats state that the events that took place in
Lebanon, Palestine and Iraq only worsened the situation in the war
unfolded against the international terrorism. USA should reconsider
its policy in the Middle East and trace the profound reasons for
terrorism and improve the stability and peace in the region.
France Presse Agence reported that a group of extremists attacked
the US Embassy in Damasks and tried to explode two mine-strewn cars
on September 12.
The security forces of Syria responded the attack and saved the
American diplomats. In exchange of fire all of the four terrorists
were killed. None of the Americans suffered in the accident.
According to the latest data, 14 people were wounded, included one
of the Syrian guards of the embassy, a local employee of the embassy,
a Chinese diplomat and a passer by.
Characterizing the attack of the embassy as “a disgusting act of terror
of a group of extremists,” the Embassy of Syria to USA emphasized,
“The Syrian people spared no efforts to protect the US Embassy,
according to the international treaty of Geneva.”
Meanwhile, Condoleezza Rice, US State Secretary, also emphasized the
devotion and courage of the Syrian people and expressed gratitude to
the Syrian authorities for securing the safety of the American Embassy
to Syria. At the same time, she called for Damasks to cooperate with
USA in the anti-terrorist struggle.

Ombudsman Sees A Menace Fo Freedon Of Expression

OMBUDSMAN SEES A MENACE FOR FREEDOM OF EXPRESSION
A1+
[03:48 pm] 14 September, 2006
The level of human protection is far from being perfect in Armenia. RA
Ombudsman Armen Haroutyunyan sees a real threat in this respect. His
anxiety is determined by the recent violence and intimidation on
journalists.
As freedom of expression is one of the necessary guarantees for
democracy establishment, the continuation of such atmosphere can be
a threat for our country’s future.
While speaking of Armen Babajanyan’s (editor-in-chief of
“Yerevan-Time”) four-year imprisonment, Armen Haroutyunyan mentioned,
“Arguments might be brought that he was imprisoned to 4-year term from
the legal point of view. But I do think that it is a severe approach to
the case. There are opinions that the editor-in-chief of the newspaper
had oppositional attitude. Those opinions may be grounded. But I don’t
think he made such an act to be sentenced to four-year imprisonment.”
Today Armen Haroutyunyan presented his six-month work in the post
of Human Rights Protector. He has got 1794 applications within this
time. 854 of them were in written form. 121 written applications
found their solution. On the whole, the authors of the applications
complain of the activity of courts (106), Yerevan Municipality (95),
police forces (71) and Ministry of Justice (61).
By the way, referring to the issue life imprisonment and complaints
of prisoners that capital punishment mustn’t be changed to life
imprisonment, the Ombudsman noted, “To tell the truth, our survey
revealed that there isn’t any breech of rights as capital penalty
is already annulled as a means of punishment and changed into life
imprisonment. This is a milder approach to the matter. We see no
violation in this respect.”

Ukraine Is Azerbaijan’s Relative: Crime Was An Award To Ukraine

UKRAINE IS AZERBAIJAN’S RELATIVE: CRIME WAS AN AWARD TO UKRAINE
A1+
[08:36 pm] 14 September, 2006
Victor Yushchenco, president of the Ukraine, made a rough announcement
during his last visit to Azerbaijan on behalf of the Azeris. He said
that in his opinion the Karabakh conflict can be settled within the
territorial integrity and wholeness of Azerbaijan.
After this announcement RA Foreign Minsitry expressed our position
towards the Ukrainian authorities through the ambassador.
While answering the question of A1+, Foreign Minister Vartan Oskanian
said, “Though we are in close relations with the Ukraine, we still
counter problems in political sphere. The announcement of the Ukraine
President is inadmissible for us. We have told the Ukrainian side
about our position on this score. We assume such announcements pursuit
certain specific aims.”
Vahan Hovhannesyan, NA deputy speaker says he wasn’t caught unawares by
such announcement. “Khrushchov presented Unkraine with the Crime just
the way Stalin presented Azerbaijan with Nakhijevan and Karabakh. ”
Let us put Yushchenco aside. Tomorrow Putin, Bush and many other
presidents may come up with such announcements. In answer to our
question that Ukraine supplies Azerbaijan with weapons can this
violate the balance of powers in the region, Aram Sargsyan, member
of Democratic Party of Armenia, answered, “The Ukraine has supplied
them with weapons for a long time, even since the war and has got no
problems on this score.
We must blame ourselves as Armenia has taken no measures to prevent
it.”

Oskanian: Meetings Of Armenian And Azeri FMs Should Not Be End In Th

OSKANIAN: MEETINGS OF ARMENIAN AND AZERI FMS SHOULD NOT BE END IN THEMSELVES
PanARMENIAN.Net
14.09.2006 16:35 GMT+04:00
/PanARMENIAN.Net/ The final terms of the meeting of Armenian and
Azeri FMs are not specified yet, Armenian Foreign Minister Vartan
Oskanian said. “Co-chairs of the OSCE MG for settlement of the conflict
seriously discuss the issue of a possible meeting of FMs.
However, our stance is that those meetings should not be an end in
themselves,” Oskanian told journalists in Yerevan Thursday. “We are
ready to meet at any time, however the atmosphere should be favorable
for discussing specific matters,” the FM added.
Azerbaijan makes every effort to distract attention from the Minsk
process, which is evidenced by inclusion of the issue on protracted
conflicts in the UN GA agenda, Oskanian believes. “Maybe Azerbaijan
wants to give up its agreement to the OSCE MG document, including
the referendum in NK and the self-determination principle by trying
to divert attention from the Minsk process to the UN,” the Minister
supposes. “Thus, our meeting is open to question before specification
of the processes in the UN,” Oskanian said. However, he did not rule
out the opportunity of holding a meeting, reports Novosti-Armenia.
