Armenia – June 29 2022

The families of Armenia’s reservists who were captured by Azerbaijan in Khtsaberd village of Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh) are protesting Wednesday in front of the Russian embassy in Yerevan. They demand the return of these soldiers.

A mother of one of these captives told reporters: “Yesterday’s meeting with the Russian consul [in Gyumri] did not yield any results. They have been ‘sending us off’ for 1.5 years, deceiving [us] with something every day. ”

She added that it is only through the Red Cross that they are able to talk on the phone for four minutes with their captured relatives—and that’s it.

Another parent said: “We have not received any response from the [Armenian] government. If our children were taken from the Russian peacekeepers [in Artsakh], natural, we shall come here [to the Russian embassy]. (…). We have petitioned to the [Armenian] authorities, too, but they have not given a specific answer.”

“The UK is pleased to assist Azerbaijan in the demining process. It’s great to see that some territories have already been cleared of mines. We are always looking for new opportunities to provide more funding in this direction. I hope that we will announce new funding soon,” Sharp said.

According to him, the UK has already allocated 500,000 Pound sterling ($608,000) to United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) to support the Azerbaijan National Agency for Mine Action (ANAMA).

The UK’s companies provide Azerbaijan with technical advice, non-technical services, and mine action standards, the diplomat noted.

“We continue to encourage both sides to accelerate the peace process. We also support the EU’s efforts to assist Azerbaijan and Armenia in this process. This is a very long process, but we are already seeing positive changes that have not been seen in the last 30 years,” Sharp added.
