Vagharshak Harutyunyan: During the April war Azerbaijan failed to achieve its goals

Yerevan April 4

Ani Mshetsyan. Azerbaijan failed to achieve the goal pursued during the April 2016 war. The ex-Minister of Defense of Armenia Vagharshak Harutyunyan stated this at a press conference on April 4.

According to him, there were several reasons that provoked Azerbaijan for the April adventure. First, according to Harutyunyan, at that time the parties were very close to agreeing on the Madrid principles, which was not in Azerbaijan’s favor, since they also included the right of the people of Artsakh to self- determination.

The second reason, according to the ex-minister, was the disagreement between Ankara and Moscow over the downed Russian aircraft. “Turkey began inciting Azerbaijan to military provocation,” he said. According to Artutyan, Azerbaijan’s goal during the April war was to strengthen its political positions. In addition, Baku wanted to prove to the mediators of the OSCE Minsk Group that it could solve the Karabakh issue by military means. “This was a local, not a global war, aimed at seizing border areas,” said Harutyunyan.

Talking about the military actions themselves, Harutyunyan noted that Azerbaijan launched the attack at night. In the actions were brought in order 10,000 Azerbaijani military, from the Armenian side is ten times less. According to Harutyunyan, the Azerbaijani special forces crossed the border and struck a blow, after which artillery and heavy equipment were connected, which was by that time tightened to the border.

Thus, Harutyunyan continued, Azerbaijan managed to achieve success on the first night, taking into account the surprise factor, and precisely on those positions where the Armenian side was not very vigilant. However, after that, according to him, the Azerbaijanis received a worthy rebuff and retreated, behind them there were only those participants who they had already captured. “After the Armenian army launched a counter-offensive, the Azerbaijanis asked for peace,” the ex-defense minister said. In his opinion, in the military terms, the Armenian side achieved success and did not allow Azerbaijan to achieve its goal. “Their losses were significant – about 500 people, as well as equipment, and Baku was not able to correctly apply aviation, for which it spent large sums,” he said. Touching upon the territorial losses of the Armenian side, the ex-minister assured that they did not have any strategic importance.

According to Harutyunyan, Baku was defeated on the political front, as the Minsk mediators, and the international community as a whole, shared the Armenian side’s approach to placing CCTV cameras in the border zone and creating mechanisms to investigate the incidents.

Explaining the motives of the constant military adventures of Baku, Harutyunyan expressed the opinion that by doing this he is trying to create an atmosphere of fear in Artsakh and Armenia and force him to make concessions. At the same time, the ex-minister excluded the possibility of a repeat of the events of April 2016.

So I had my father build this Nimbus 2000 broomstick instead INSPIRATION Modern chic interiors HOME IS They say home is where the heart is, and I believe that. I’ve learnt to make the most out of every chance I get to spend with family around my busy schedule

When Natalie Aroyan was younger, all she wanted was to mimic the career highs of pop star Tina Arena. She certainly had the vocal range, but her parents encouraged her to take the more conventional path and head off to university to study a Bachelor of Business and Bachelor of Information Technology, “just in case”.

After graduating, Natalie still wanted to be a pop singer, so her parents, of Armenian descent, relented and took her to see a famous Armenian mezzo soprano and vocal coach, Liliya Ovchiyan, in concert.

“That weekend I experienced opera for the first time, and I thought, ‘wow, this woman’s voice is so voluptuous and voluminous, without a microphone’, I have to learn from her,” Natalie says. “So, we approached her and I sang for her. After just one song, she stopped me and said, ‘You are not meant to be a pop singer’, and my heart sank. She then said, ‘You were born to be an opera singer’.

That was the turning point for Natalie, who is now a star in Opera Australia’s line-up, and calls the Sydney Opera House, “my home”.

At the moment she is juggling two operas, performing in both Carmen by Bizet and La Traviata by Verdi. Later on this year, Natalie will debut in the title role in AIDA at her beloved Sydney Opera House.

Natalie has had career stints in New York and Modena, Italy, and keeps her own apartment in the inner-city suburb of Zetland for when she’s not on the road.

“I have a beautiful rooftop apartment, which is close to work and close to the city,” she says. “When I am on the North Shore I am with my parents, when I am not, I live alone. But I travel so much I am rarely alone.” More opera.org.au

Turkish press: Armenian lawmakers elect former PM Sarkissian as new president

COMPILED FROM WIRE SERVICES
ISTANBUL
PublishedMarch 2, 2018

Armenia’s parliament chose Armen Sarkissian as the country’s new president on Friday by a large margin.

Sarkissian, 64, a former prime minister who once served as the country’s ambassador to Britain, was elected to serve a seven-year term.

Sarkissian garnered 90 votes in the 105-seat legislature, succeeding President Serzh Sargsyan who seeks to extend his grip on power under a new system of governance once he steps down in April. The two men are not related.

Armenia, a South Caucasus country of around three million people, is in line with some other former Soviet republics and countries in eastern Europe in moving away from direct democracy, according to analysts.

Outgoing Sargsyan became president in 2008 and nominated former prime minister Sarkissian to succeed him in January.

Under the terms of a constitution approved in 2015 in a referendum that effectively abolished direct presidential elections, parliament can elect a president with a three-quarters majority.

The presidency is now meant to become largely ceremonial under the amended constitution and power to shift to the prime minister and parliament.

Opposition leaders accuse Sargsyan of planning to move into the post of prime minister to continue ruling Armenia.

Sargsyan denies having any such intention.

But many members of the ruling party say Sargsyan would be the best candidate for prime minister given his experience, especially in negotiations over neighboring Azerbaijan’s breakaway Nagorno-Karabakh region.

Clashes over control of Nagorno-Karabakh, which lies inside Azerbaijan, have intensified in the past three years and there was a flare-up in violence there in April 2016.

Armenia seceded from the Soviet Union in 1991, but remains dependent on Russia for aid and investment. Many Armenians accuse the government of corruption and mishandling the economy.
