Armenia acting PM to voters: Prepare for civil revenge

News.am, Armenia
June 8 2021

I said in 2018 that there will be no staff “massacres.” [But] now I want to say that there will be staff “massacres,” and the officials will be “massacred” who, taking advantage of the opportunities provided by the revolution after 2018, have hidden in the corridors of the people’s power and all this time played the role of a “Trojan Horse.” Acting Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, who is the ruling Civil Contract Party’s candidate for Prime Minister, stated this during Tuesday’s election campaign in Talin town of Aragatsotn Province of Armenia—and ahead of the snap parliamentary elections on June 20.

“Yes, give [us] the mandate to carry out that staff ‘massacre,’ and we will throw all the ‘Trojan Horses’ out of the public administration system [of Armenia]. (…) after the elections, there will be vendettas against the community leaders who try to coerce the people. The heads of institutions (…) who have coerced their employees in any way will be subjected to the most brutal but political vendettas. It is not about physical vendetta, it is about political and civil. (…). Prepare for civil revenge, civil vendettas, staff ‘massacres,’” Pashinyan added.

On October 20, 2020, the Armenian government has made a decision to apply a temporary ban on the import of Turkish-made products. The ban entered into force on December 31, 2020. Armenia plans to extend this ban.

Caucasian Knot | At exhibition in Yerevan, Nagorno-Karabakh presents new tourist routes

The Caucasian Knot, EU
June 5 2021

< /div>

Instead of the historical and cultural sights that remained in the territories occupied by the Azerbaijani Army, about 20 new objects have been presented to tourists, Gevorg Arakelyan, the head of the tourism department under the Ministry of Economy of the unrecognized republic, said at the “Intour Expo” international exhibition in Yerevan. This season, tourism in Nagorno-Karabakh is popular mainly among visitors from Armenia and local residents, entrepreneurs have reported.

Given the fact that after the 2020 war, some territories came under Azerbaijan’s control, it was necessary to design new tourist routes, Mr Arakelyan has noted.

“The new tourist routes include natural and historical-architectural monuments located in the Martuni, Martakert and Askeran Districts. There are up to two dozen attractions in total. Mountain and forest hiking trips, local history and ethnographic museums are very popular among tourists,” Gevorg Arakelyan said, adding that From January to May, up to 600 foreign tourists visited Artsakh, which is 70 percent lower than during the same period of 2020.

As noted by Sergey Shahverdyan, the chairman of the Nagorno-Karabakh’s Public Council for the Protection of Cultural Heritage, after the 2016 war, the tourism sector was restored quite quickly.

There are enough historical, cultural and natural monuments in the republic that can be included into tourist routes, said Armine Airapetyan, the director of the Nagorno-Karabakh’s State Service for the Protection of Historical Environment. According to her story, some of them can already be visited by tourists; others need some minor furnishing.

YEREVAN, JUNE 1, ARMENPRESS. President of Armenia Armen Sarkissian has addressed a message on the Children’s Rights Protection Day, the Presidential Office told Armenpress.

The message reads:

“Dear children,

Today is the official day to protect your childhood.

However, first of all, it reminds us, the adults, that the efforts to protect you and your childhood will be in vain if the Homeland, our border, our country, our home, and our yard are not peaceful and safe.

You can realize your dreams, the dreams of your parents and grandparents only in such a homeland.

Dear parents,

Children are the most sincere and believing in our society. They sincerely believe and trust you, their parents, and their family. They are sincerely happy even for the smallest piece of success. They move forward with sincere hope and faith even when they are just learning to walk …

We have no right to question their innate sincerity in any way. Moreover, with our attention, care, love, and warmth, we must be responsible and committed so that their faith, hope, and trust are never lost. Thus, we will strengthen the foundations of our country. Thus, we will educate a generation who will believe in themselves and will believe that the future of Armenia depends on them.

Dear children,

I believe that you will make our country much better.

I believe and wish your childhood be a time for you to dream peacefully and safely in the Homeland and to live a healthy and prosperous life.

In your future life, I wish you would live in the world you were dreaming of and which became a reality owing to your thoughts, ideas, and work”.

YEREVAN, May 30. /TASS/. Azerbaijan is seeking to provoke tensions on the border in a bid to influence the outcome of the early parliamentary elections in Armenia, Armenian acting Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said on Sunday.

“Azerbaijan’s latest provocations [on the border] are obviously meant to influence electoral processes in Armenia,” he said.

“Taking these provocative steps, Azerbaijan wants to see a certain election outcome,” he said, adding that Baku doesn’t want his party win the parliamentary polls.

Amid the political crisis that broke out in Armenia in November 2020, the government and parliamentary parties agreed to organize early parliamentary elections on June 20.

Armenia’s defense ministry said on May 12 that Azerbaijani armed forces had tried to carry out “certain works” in a border area in Syunik Province in a bid to “adjust the border. Pashinyan described the situation as an infringement of Armenia’s territory. He said Azerbaijani troops had crossed Armenia’s state border and moved 3.5 kilometers deep into its territory. The sides have had several rounds of talks to settle the situation.

What Lies Beneath: President Biden’s Deceptive Acknowledgment of the Armenian Genocide

by Guest Contributor

President Biden’s April 24 statement acknowledging the Armenian Genocide (1915–1923+) carried out by Turkey was welcome but flawed.

Indeed, “Turkey” appears nowhere in the document.

Moreover, the State Department swiftly undermined Biden’s virtuous-sounding words.

American acknowledgment of the Armenian Genocide isn’t even new.

The U.S. House has passed several resolutions on the Genocide, and a nearly unanimous Congress did so in 2019.

Presidents going back to Woodrow Wilson have described the Armenian ordeals with language such as: an effort to exterminate all Armenians; terrible massacres; mass killings; death marches; and an ancient [Armenian] homeland was erased.

If these don’t describe genocide, the word is meaningless.

In 1951, the State Department cited the Armenian “massacres [as a] crime of genocide” in a filing at the International Court of Justice.

In 1981, President Reagan included “the genocide of Armenians” in a Holocaust proclamation.

Genocide acknowledgments should not — like car insurance — lapse if not renewed annually.

Will the Holocaust become a non-genocide next year if the White House happens to overlook it?

Still, Biden’s statement is noteworthy. It could even reinvigorate several Armenian American lawsuits against Turkey.

But his statement has problems.

Biden tries to take the heat off today’s Republic of Turkey by blaming only “Ottoman-era … authorities” for the Genocide.

After the Allies defeated Ottoman Turkey in WWI (1918), Ottoman General Mustafa Kemal’s (Ataturk) forces continued to massacre Armenians, Assyrians, and Greeks.

Kemal also ordered that Armenia be “politically and physically eliminated.”  When he established the Turkish Republic in 1923, Kemal appointed Ottoman genocidists and continued to persecute Christians.

Thus, as President Erdogan himself has confirmed, his country is a “continuation” of Ottoman Turkey. Knowing this, the Turkish Republic has always tried to evade accountability for the Genocide.

Disgracefully, though, Biden tries to assist Turkey in that regard by writing, “We do this not to cast blame” [on Turkey].”

The president has no right to hand Turkey a “Get Out of Jail Free card.”

Just two days later, American Ambassador to Armenia Lynne Tracy tried to help Turkey duck accountability.

“The Armenian Genocide took place in 1915, the [UN] Genocide Convention did not come into force until 1951 … from the legal perspective the Convention is not being applied retroactively.”

Tracy’s reasoning — disputed by experts — suggests that Jews should have received no restitution or reparations because the Holocaust (1933–1945) also occurred before 1951.

Turkey’s genocidal threats against Armenians continue to this day, something the president’s declaration ignores.

In 1993, Turkey was going to invade Armenia were the coup against Russian President Boris Yeltsin to succeed.

President Erdogan has branded Armenians, Assyrians, and Greeks “Leftovers of the Sword.”  It’s an obvious, existential threat against Christian populations who survived Turkey’s 20th century genocides.

In 2020, Turkey, its Turkic ally Azerbaijan, and jihadist mercenaries successfully attacked Armenian-populated Artsakh/Nagorno-Karabagh and Armenia.

Erdogan gleefully likened these attacks to Ottoman Turkey’s genocidal invasion (1918) of Armenia. “Today, may the souls of [General] Nuri Pasha, [Minister of War] Enver Pasha, and the brave soldiers of the Caucasus Islam Army, be happy.”

An analogy would be Germany’s denying the Holocaust, threatening Israel, arming its foes, calling Jews “leftovers of the concentration camps,” and glorifying Nazi Germany.

Azerbaijani President Aliyev simultaneously claimed huge chunks of Armenia, including its capital Yerevan.

Turkey and Azerbaijan’s military assaults and threats are all reminiscent of the Genocide.

Biden’s vow that America must “ensure that what happened [the Armenian Genocide] is never repeated,” therefore, rings hollow.

Moreover, Section 907 of the Freedom Support Act conditionally prohibits U.S. aid to Azerbaijan if the latter supports terrorism or engages in aggression against Artsakh/Nagorno-Karabagh/Armenia.

However, the White House just waived Section 907 despite Azerbaijan’s flagrant use of ISIS and other terrorists against Armenians.

Let’s not be deceived by the Biden’s April 24 statement and the State Department’s unprincipled actions.

EPP Vice-Chair urges Azerbaijan to provide ECHR with necessary information about Armenian POWs

YEREVAN, MAY 20, ARMENPRESS. Armenian servicemen and civilians captured during the recent Armenian-Azerbaijani war and after that must be immediately released without preconditions, Vice-Chair of the European People’s Party (EPP), MEP representing Bulgaria Andrey Kovatchev said during the discussion at the EP plenary session relating to the POWs captured during the recent Nagorno Karabakh war.

“Baku should refrain from applying any arbitrary detention and must fully implement the trilateral agreement which envisages exchange of all prisoners of war, captives and other detained persons”, the MEP said.

He noted that although Azerbaijan is using these persons calling them criminals or terrorists, they all are under the protection of the Geneva Convention and the international law and must be returned to their families in accordance with this.

“Azerbaijan must assist the European Court of Human Rights by providing necessary information about the persons it holds and their health condition. That country should refrain from any action torturing these people. An independent and impartial investigation is needed over the violations of the Geneva Convention and the international law, the fundamental accusations about the possible war crimes. In addition, Baku must close the so-called Victory Park which displays mannequins depicting Armenian soldiers”, the MEP said, adding that the existence of that park contributes to maintenance of hatred and harms the establishment of trust between the two countries.

He added that the European Parliament has always tried to be objective. “If we had reliable information that Azerbaijani citizens are being held on the Armenian side, we would have demanded the same from Yerevan – their immediate release without preconditions. Every human life is priceless and must be protected”, Andrey Kovatchev said.
