Pashinyan fails to clearly state whether Armenia applied to Russia and CSTO in writing in regard to Nov. 16 attack

News.am, Armenia
Nov 24 2021

During his online press conference, Prime Minister of Armenia Nikol Pashinyan didn’t give a clear answer to Armdaily.am’s question whether Armenia has applied to Russia and the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) through a written procedure in order for the country and the CSTO to fulfill the obligations laid down in the relevant treaty and whether Russia and the CSTO are fulfilling those obligations before Armenia.

“I don’t know if the news has been released, but Armenia has applied to the Russian Federation and the CSTO in regard to the situation created on May 12 of this year. The event that took place on November 16 is part of the events of May 12 — the Azerbaijani Armed Forces invaded the territory of Armenia, and we continue the discussions, and Armenia will consistently protect its rights in all instances.

Armenia won’t accept the policy of coercion. Armenia is a sovereign state. During the session of the Security Council, I expressed the will of our government and people to protect the sovereignty, independence and statehood of Armenia, and yes, also democracy. I believe we need to provide solutions. However, Armenia won’t act under coercion. We will use all the international formats and leverages to protect our rights,” Pashinyan said.

YEREVAN, November 17. /TASS/. The agreement between Armenia and Azerbaijan on a ceasefire on the eastern front is being generally observed, and the situation remains relatively stable, a statement by Armenia’s Defense Ministry revealed on Wednesday.

“As of 10:00 (09:00 Moscow time – TASS) on November 17, the situation along Armenia’s eastern border zone, where earlier Armenian positions were attacked by units of Azerbaijan’s armed forces is relatively stable, and the ceasefire agreement is generally being observed,” the statement noted.

The Armenian Defense Ministry also notes that as a result of military actions on November 16, “the enemy has up to 70 servicemen killed and wounded as well as substantial losses of military equipment, in particular, four BTR armored personnel carriers, a SandCat armored vehicle, five automobiles (Kamaz, Ural, UAZ).”

“On the Armenian side, one person was killed, and 13 servicemen were captured. During the military action, contact was lost with another 24 servicemen, and their fate is currently unknown. Intensive efforts are underway on searching for the servicemen. Two combat positions have been taken over by the adversary,” the statement noted.

The Armenian Defense Ministry also noted that talks are underway with Russian mediation on settling the situation and returning the captured Armenian servicemen.

On Tuesday, intensive clashes between the armed forces of Armenia and Azerbaijan broke out in the border districts of Armenia’s Syunik Province. Yerevan stated that the Azerbaijani military began advancing on Armenia’s territory. The state highway which connects the Armenian capital with the country’s southern regions and Iran was threatened. Baku pinned the blame on Yerevan accusing the Armenian armed forces of triggering a provocation. According to the Azerbaijani Defense Ministry, Armenian servicemen attacked Azerbaijani positions. Due to these events, Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu held phone conversations with his colleagues in Armenia and Azerbaijan. The press service of Russia’s Defense Ministry reported that afterwards the heads of Azerbaijan’s and Armenia’s military agencies undertook measures on stabilizing the situation on the border.

At VMware, we believe everyone has something unique to contribute to our society. Our culture of service influences the way we interact with others – inside and outside of work. As such, we are all Citizen Philanthropists, empowered to support what is most meaningful to us through VMware Foundation programs. VMware’s culture of service is a key pillar of the equity outcomes of VMware’s 2030 Agenda, as Citizen Philanthropy provides equal access to VMware’s charitable resources for all VMware people around the world.

To bring VMware Foundation programs to life, employee-led groups called Giving Networks inspire VMware colleagues (in their teams, sites, locations, regions, countries, etc.) to take action in their communities. As Giving Network members, people embody VMware’s EPIC2 values and leadership, demonstrating how we can all learn and grow personally and professionally through service.

This month we checked in with Ashot Harutyunyan and Mariam Avagyan, two active members of the Armenia Giving Network, as well as Gohar Avagyan, who is the Giving Network lead, about each of their Service Learning experiences.

Ashot Harutyunyan, Staff Data Scientist:

I spent many of my Service Learning hours this year contributing to the nonprofit academic community in my city. Using my specialized skills, I assisted with preparing scientific meetings that encouraged students and young professionals to engage and grow, as well as build bridges between the university and technology research groups. My 40 hours of Service Learning this year were focused on supporting an examination committee for students training in Artificial Intelligence, as well as volunteering to be a guest editor for a computer science journal. This included reviewing research papers, improvement recommendations of scientific works, and getting the research papers to the level of being selected for a high-quality journal publication. Such activities have already resulted in two special issues of the open-source Journal of Universal Computer Science with three volumes in the past 2-3 years.

“Our culture of service at VMware gives people an exceptional opportunity to accelerate positive changes in the communities we live in. I personally feel joy and pride from my contributions and impact. “

Gohar Avagyan, Office Manager:

When I joined VMware in 2018, I was pleasantly surprised to learn about our Service Learning and Citizen Philanthropy Investment programs, and the fact that each employee has the choice to decide how they want to give back to the community.

“I think the freedom of choice to do Service Learning activities that are close to your heart is something that makes VMware unique in comparison to other companies that I have worked with.”

As the lead of the Armenia Giving Network, I have helped plan many Service Learning events for my team this year, including planting trees, expanding urban green zones, and promoting sustainability efforts, which are all activities that our office is passionate about. I have had opportunities to organize group Service Learning activities for our staff on several occasions, and we usually join local municipality initiatives, but for the latest event, I approached the Armenia Tree Project, a nonprofit that specializes in forestation. Jointly we identified a venue, which was Arayi village in Aragatsotn province of Armenia, a picturesque sight with breathtaking views of Mount Aragats, the highest pick in Armenia, Arayi Mountain, which has a profile of King Ara the Beautiful, and Ararat Mountain! Local residents were interested in setting up a community garden around the small church on the hillside, right at the entrance of the village. Together with my VMware colleagues we planted 350 trees of various types. I strongly believe that all of our actions matter and we can accomplish even more together, so I choose to organize group Service Learning activities and help colleagues get engaged.

Mariam Avagyan, Senior Engineering Manager:

I am a firm believer that education can empower the children of today to become the tech leaders of tomorrow. At Armath Engineering Laboratories, kids aged 10-18 are introduced to science, technology, engineering, and math education through interactive after-school classes, exciting competitions, innovative camps and more.

One of the key components contributing to the success of Armath are the teachers, who commit to learning new technologies and skillsets necessary for educating the kids within Armath labs.

“As part of the VMware family and a member of the Armenia Giving Network, I’m humbled to have the opportunity to share my technical skills by organizing and conducting technical courses along with my colleagues for teachers at Armath.” Our team believes that sharing our professional skills will contribute to the success of the children attending these labs. There are 45 teachers attending our online 2-month courses, who are organized into 9 groups based on their knowledge and language of preference.Read more stories from our #WeAreCitizenPhilanthropists Series by following the hashtag on LinkedIn & Instagram

Azerbaijani press: Azerbaijan seeks co-op with UNESCO in post-war rehabilitation

By Ayya Lmahamad

Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov has said that Azerbaijan in its efforts of post-conflict rehabilitation is looking forward to cooperation with UNESCO, the Foreign Ministry has reported.

He made the remarks speaking at the General Policy Debates of the 41st Session of the General Conference of UNESCO on November 10.

He noted that since the end of the conflict, Azerbaijan and UNESCO have been actively engaged in dialogue with a view of dispatching a technical mission to the liberated lands.

“The two sides have agreed on several complex technical, legal, and political aspects of the mission, which will ensure its effectiveness and independence,” he said.

Noting that the results of the Armenian occupation were devastation, the minister underlined that Armenia has pursued a systematic policy to destroy, pillage, and misappropriate Azerbaijan’s cultural heritage.

Bayramov stressed that during the occupation period, hundreds of cultural properties have been deliberately and completely destroyed, damaged, looted, and subjected to alteration with a view to changing their historical and cultural character.

He stated that out of 67 mosques, 65 had been razed to the ground and the remaining two were desecrated and used as stables for pigs and cows in total disrespect to the Muslim world. Bayramov added that thousands of museum artifacts had been illegally exported to Armenia.

“By all these actions, Armenia pursued far-reaching targets of removing any sign heralding their Azerbaijani origin, as an example of cultural genocide. Armenia also refuses to share the maps of the minefields, deliberately preventing the return of IDPs to the liberated territories,” he said.

“It also constitutes a gross violation of international law, including UNESCO instruments, such as the 1954 Hague Convention and its Two Protocols, as well as the 1970 Convention,” the minister added.

The minister recalled that in various communications, Azerbaijan has alerted UNESCO of these gross violations and illegal activities committed by Armenia and requested the need to dispatch a technical mission to the occupied territories through the past 30 years.

“Unfortunately, each time Armenia prevented the dispatch of this mission, which was acknowledged by UNESCO in its 2005 report,” he said.

Bayramov said that Azerbaijan has already initiated practical steps aiming at eliminating the consequences of decades-long occupation followed by massive destruction.

“At the highest-level Azerbaijan declared its determination that all cultural and religious monuments on the liberated territories regardless of their origin will be duly preserved and restored,” Bayramov said.

He added that Azerbaijan will continue to build upon these ideas and values and guarantee all the rights for all its citizens, irrespective of their ethnic or religious affiliation.

Emphasizing that the assessment of the unprecedented damage inflicted upon the country’s cultural heritage is a priority for the government, the minister also stressed the readiness to host an independent technical mission as soon as possible.

“Unfortunately, Armenia is trying to block and politicize the mission, which is detrimental to its successful accomplishment. Armenia must refrain from interfering in this process and cease exploiting this Organization for its own political purposes,” he said.

Yerevan urges Baku to give up hate policies, ease regional tensions

TASS, Russia
Nov 12 2021
Azerbaijan continues to torpedo the implementation of the achieved agreements in various ways, Armenia’s Deputy Prime Minister Mger Grigoryan noted

YEREVAN, November 12. /TASS/. Azerbaijan should give up hate polices and take a constructive stance for the sake of easing tensions and putting the region on a peaceful development track, Armenia’s Deputy Prime Minister Mger Grigoryan said at an online meeting of the CIS Heads of Government Council on Friday.

“Azerbaijan continues to torpedo the implementation of the achieved agreements in various ways. For one, it still keeps in custody many prisoners of war, which is a crude violation of paragraph eight of the November 9, 2020 statement, and of international law. For easing tensions and putting the region on a peaceful development track it is essential for Baku to take a constructive stance and give up hate policies and any hostile actions,” he said.

Grigoryan said Armenia appreciated Russia’s mediatory efforts for ending hostilities in Nagorno-Karabakh, as well as the activity of Russian peacekeepers in the region.

“A year ago, a trilateral statement by the leaders of Armenia, Russia and Azerbaijan was adopted, thanks to Russia’s brokerage, on a ceasefire and the termination of all combat operations in the area of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. We appreciate the efforts exerted by the Russian allies, as well as the activity of the peacekeeping contingent, deployed along the disengagement line and the Lachin corridor,” he said.

Grigoryan recalled that the conflict, which he blamed on Baku, left 40,000 people homeless and destitute, 17,000 civilian facilities ruined and several hundred people dead or injured.

Tensions in the zone of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict aggravated on September 27, 2020, when hostilities flared up. On November 9, Russian President Vladimir Putin, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan signed a joint statement on the complete cessation of hostilities in the region. Under the agreement, the Azerbaijani and Armenian forces stopped at the positions they were holding at the moment. A number of districts were put under Baku’s control. Russian peacekeepers were deployed along the engagement line and the Lachin corridor.
