Parties to Karabakh Conflict Should Put Aside Distrust of Each Other – Lavrov

MOSCOW, April 9 (Sputnik) – The parties to the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict should abandon mistrust toward each other in order to move forward in the negotiations, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said.

“The most important thing is to move away from mistrust that still sometimes manifests itself in the negotiations, and to focus on realistic, pragmatic ideas that are in abundance,” Lavrov told Armenian TV-channels on Sunday.

He stressed that the work of the 2011 Kazan summit on the conflict could still be used in the matter of the Nagorno-Karabakh settlement.

“I am sure that much of what is contained in the so-called ‘Kazan document’ is still relevant … Of course, since that time, some new ideas have emerged, which the co-chairs [of the OSCE Minsk Group on Nagorno-Karabakh settlement] are now promoting in contacts with the parties,” Lavrov noted.

During the Kazan summit hosted by then Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, the presidents of Armenia and Azerbaijan did not manage to reach a deal to settle the conflict, despite international mediators’ expectations.

The conflict in Armenian-dominated Nagorno-Karabakh started in 1988 with the autonomous region announcing its secession from the Azerbaijan Socialist republic. In 1991, the region proclaimed independence from Azerbaijan and the creation of the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic. This move triggered a military conflict, which led to Baku losing control over the region.

The warring sides agreed to a cessation of hostilities in 1994. The violence escalated again in 2016, leading to multiple casualties on both sides. The sides soon reached a ceasefire but clashes continued.

It is said that the demand for children’s literature is high in libraries and bookstores.

“In schools, children are assigned mandatory reading lists, but they also read amateur literature,” says Armine Petrosyan, head of the Children’s Literature Department at Avetik Isahakyan Library.

Young people sometimes require literature that is be banned for their ages.

Football: Sanchez transfer 'hinges on Mkhitaryan deal', says agent
London, Jan 16 2018
Manchester United's bid to sign Alexis Sanchez from Arsenal hinges on
Henrikh Mkhitaryan moving the other way, the Armenian player's agent
said Tuesday as Antonio Conte distanced Chelsea from a potential deal.
Chile international Sanchez, who appears to have played his last game
for Arsenal, had been strongly linked with a move to either Manchester
United or Manchester City and Chelsea boss Antonio Conte has also
spoken of his admiration for the player.
The player, who is out of contract this summer, had appeared certain
to sign for Pep Guardiola's team after a transfer fell through in
August but it is understood City have pulled out of the race for the
29-year-old due to the costs involved.
There has been speculation Mkhitaryan will be offered as a makeweight
from United to land Sanchez, and Mourinho left the playmaker out of
the squad to face Stoke on Monday due to "doubts about his future".
Mkhitaryan's agent Mino Raiola told Britain's Times newspaper that
Sanchez's transfer to United was reliant on his client joining Arsenal
as part of the deal.
"Manchester United are not going to sign Sanchez unless Mkhi agrees to
join Arsenal," Raiola told the newspaper.
"Mkhi is going to do what is best for him. He has two-and-a-half years
left on his contract so it's his decision. Sanchez is part of the Mkhi
deal, not the other way around."
Conte last week described any potential cut-priced deal for the Chile
striker as a great opportunity but he told reporters on Tuesday that
he did not believe Chelsea were trying to sign the player.
- 'Great' signing -
Jose Mourinho, speaking after second-placed United had reduced Premier
League table-toppers City's lead to 12 points on Monday said it would
be "great" if Sanchez arrived at Old Trafford though he remained
non-committal.
"No news on Alexis Sanchez, he is an Arsenal player," he said. "If he
stays it's great for Arsenal, if he comes to us, great for us, if he
goes to another club, great for them."
If the transfer goes ahead it would be the third blockbuster move of
the January window involving Premier League clubs following Philippe
Coutinho's big-money switch from Liverpool to Barcelona and Virgil van
Dijk's arrival at Anfield from Southampton.
United have an impressive selection of forwards but Sanchez could
expect to become a fixture in the first team alongside Romelu Lukaku,
with doubts growing over the future of Zlatan Ibrahimovic following
his recent return from a long-term injury.
Sanchez joined Arsenal from Barcelona in 2014 and in a stellar 2016/17
campaign scored 30 goals and provided 17 assists, though his form has
since dipped.
His loss would be a major blow for Arsenal, who saw Robin van Persie
swap the Emirates for Old Trafford in 2012.
Arsenal have been linked with a move for Bordeaux forward Malcom but
Arsene Wenger, who said the club would need a replacement if Sanchez
were to leave, refused to confirm his interest in the Brazilian.
The British press widely reported on Tuesday that Arsenal were in
talks to sign Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang from Borussia Dortmund.
Aubameyang was dropped at the weekend after missing a team meeting --
the third time he had been disciplined by the club after an
unauthorised video shoot and a trip to Milan shortly before a
Champions League game last season.

The new meeting of the foreign ministers of Armenia and Azerbaijan is scheduled in mid-January, Armenian deputy foreign minister Shavarsh Kocharyan told reporters in the parliament, adding that at the moment he cannot provide information on the meeting dates and place. “The meeting is scheduled in mid-January, but the foreign ministry cannot provide information about the exact date and place”, the deputy FM said.

Asked whether the meeting of presidents is possible after the ministers’ meeting, the deputy FM said: “As of now this issue is not being discussed yet”.

He stated that at the moment it’s very difficult to speak about the progress in the negotiations over the Nagorno Karabakh conflict settlement. “It’s difficult to talk about a progress since there is no trust environment between the sides. It absolutely doesn’t exist. We all witnessed different statements that are in line with Armenia’s foreign political positions according to which it is necessary to install the mechanisms that will form that environment”, the deputy minister said.

According to him, among the aforementioned conditions the priority is the maintenance of the ceasefire regime. Deputy FM Kocharyan emphasized that the meetings first of all aim at solving this issue which will also reduce the tension in the line of contact. “We again have losses, there are still shots, but, nevertheless, such meetings contribute to reducing the level of this tension”, he added.

Azerbaijan: Outside Civilization – Book about Armenian monuments’ destruction with state-run plan Azerbaijan: Outside Civilization – Book about Armenian monuments’ destruction with state-run plan

16:26, 29.12.2017

YEREVAN. – In early 2017, the Armenian Architecture Research Foundation published the book, entitled Azerbaijan: Outside Civilization, about the fate of the Armenian historical and cultural monuments that are located in today’s Azerbaijan.

The head of this foundation, monument specialist Samvel Karapetyan, informed about the aforesaid at a year-end press conference on Friday.

In his words, the title of this book already bespeaks its content. As per Karapetyan, this work presents how Armenian monuments in Azerbaijan have been destroyed over the past two decades by the Azerbaijani armed forces and respective state-run plan.

“All this occurred with the same scenario as in Turkey in the 1940s,” he added.

Also, this book includes the Russian church, in Golitsyno village of Azerbaijan’s Shamkir District, which is destroyed, too.

The monument specialist added that the book was published in three languages in order to unmask Azerbaijan, which attempts to present itself to the world as a civilized country.

“This truly is a volume that tears off Azerbaijan’s mask, which [the book] shows what an anti-cultural country Azerbaijan is, and what extremist, vandalistic attitude it has, especially towards Armenian culture,” noted Samvel Karapetyan.
