CBS Exposes Turkey’s Violation Of Greek Minority Rights, But Ignores

CBS EXPOSES TURKEY’S VIOLATION OF GREEK MINORITY RIGHTS, BUT IGNORES ARMENIANS

CBS Network’s "60 Minutes" program aired on December 17 a devastating
expose of the violations of the rights of the Greek minority in Turkey.

Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew of the Greek Orthodox Church,
headquartered in Istanbul, courageously criticized the Turkish
government for treating him as a "second-class citizen." He went on
to state that he felt like he was being "crucified."

This is perhaps the first time that a major American TV network has
dared to broadcast a program that reveals the discriminatory practices
of the repressive Turkish regime against the Greek minority. It would
appear that CBS was able to withstand the intense pressure Ankara
and its highly-paid Washington lobbyists routinely apply to censor
programs that expose the Turkish government’s abusive behavior.

Not surprisingly, various Turkish officials, including Pres. Gul,
reacted angrily. Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu disingenuously
suggested that the Greek Patriarch should have submitted his complaints
to the authorities in Ankara. The Foreign Minister acted as if he was
unaware that for years countless complaints had been lodged by the
Patriarch about the injustices suffered by his people. The Turkish
government not only has remained unresponsive to these complaints,
but has carried out a deliberate policy of harassment and intimidation
to force thousands of Greeks, Armenians, Assyrians and Jews to abandon
their homes and businesses and relocate overseas.

Bob Simon, the correspondent for "60 Minutes," reported that "at
the turn of the last century, there were nearly 2 million Orthodox
Christians in Turkey; 1.5 million were expelled in 1923, and another
150,000 left after violent anti-Christian riots in Istanbul in 1955.

Today, in all of Turkey, there are only 4,000 Orthodox Christians
left." The figures quoted by Simon refer only to Greeks.

"I have visited the Prime Minister, many Ministers, submitting our
problems…asking to help us," Patriarch Bartholomew told Simon. He
never got a response.

"60 Minutes" further reported on its website that "Turkish authorities
have seized Christian properties and closed Christian churches,
monasteries and schools." The Greek "parishioners are afraid that the
authorities want to force Bartholomew and his church — the oldest of
all Christian churches — out of Turkey." The Turkish government "would
be happy to see the Patriarchate extinguished or moving abroad, but
our belief is that it will never happen," Bartholomew told Bob Simon.

Periodically, the harassment of Greeks and other minorities becomes
deadly, as was the case with Armenian journalist Hrant Dink who was
assassinated in January 2007 in front of his Istanbul newspaper
office. In fact, just as Simon was ending his tour of the Greek
Patriarchate’s headquarters, a Turkish policeman reported that
there was a threat on Bartholomew’s life. Previous threats had been
serious enough for the Turkish authorities to place cameras and
barbed wire around the Patriarchate and provide the Patriarch with
24-hour protection.

Simon was soon to uncover that despite its Islamist facade, Prime
Minister Erdogan’s government routinely violates the tolerance
preached by the Prophet Muhammad who had written a letter to the Greek
monastery on Mt. Sinai almost 1,400 years ago, offering protection
and religious freedom to Christians. Simon lamented the fact that
Muhammad’s message of goodwill had not been put into practice by the
Turkish authorities. The Halki School of Theology, the only Greek
Orthodox seminary in Turkey, was closed down by the government in
1971. Since Turkish law requires that all priests and Patriarchs
be native Turkish citizens, the shutting down of the seminary made
the training of new priests impossible, jeopardizing the Church’s
continued existence in Turkey.

Unfortunately, CBS completely ignored the fate of Armenians and other
persecuted minorities in Turkey, never once mentioning any of them! In
fact, Simon seemed to be deliberately ignoring their existence.

In one particular segment of the program discussing the location of
the Greek Patriarchate in Istanbul, Simon went as far as describing
the neighborhood as having been "Greek and Christian." This was
yet another attempt to avoid acknowledging the Armenians. Without
diverting attention from the trials and tribulations of the Greek
Orthodox Church in Turkey, Simon could have made a passing reference
to Armenians — the country’s largest Christian minority – who also
suffered many injustices, including genocide!

Readers are urged to post a comment on the CBS website, praising the
network’s outstanding expose of the abuses and persecutions experienced
by the Ecumenical Patriarch and his flock in Turkey.

Readers should also inquire as to why there was not a single mention
of Armenians or other minorities who have also suffered under the
Turkish yoke. To post a comment, please click on the following link:

BAKU: Azerbaijani Community In UAE Sends Letter Of Protest To Eurone

AZERBAIJANI COMMUNITY IN UAE SENDS LETTER OF PROTEST TO EURONEWS

Today
Dec 21 2009
Azerbaijan

Azerbaijan’s community in the United Arab Emirates has sent a letter
of protest to Euronews.

The letter reads: "After viewing the video report "Winds of change in
Nagorno-Karabakh," the Azerbaijan community would like to express our
protest and disagreement with the false content that was presented
by your journalists.

Euronews is a widespread channel that is viewed worldwide therefore you
cannot falsify your duty and misinform the many people who view the
information you present and accept it as truthful and factual. The
facts presented in the video report were however, modified and
untruthful in many parts.

An example of the false information is the statement that revealed
that 95% of inhabitants of Nogorno Karabakh are of Armenian
nationality. This does not match with the actual statistics of
research, proving to be incorrect information known to the viewers
who watched this report.

It is also displayed in a biased way, using the Armenian voice in
order to reveal events that are biased for both countries that are
undergoing the dispute in Karabakh.

Using only the Armenian people to tell this story is journalistically
unethical and biased. Karabakh is the historical land of Azerbaijan.

The Armenians annually celebrate their arrival to Karabakh by placing
a monument to state their presence.

Another fact that displays the falsity and unprofessionalism of the
information in the report is the statement that declared that Karabakh
is not an occupied land.

The fact about the occupation of Karabakh by Armenians has been
acknowledged by governments of various countries as well as the four
resolutions made by the United Nations. Naming the occupant of a land
that is not originally their own, a president of that named land,
is factual crime. Karabakh is not a country of its own and naming a
president for it is incorrect.

In addition, once again the religious question is brought up in this
report, where Karabakh is named the "Christian" land. Azerbaijan is a
Muslim country and the majority of their populations are followers of
Islam. Karabakh, being a land that originally belongs to Azerbaijan,
cannot be named Christian.

We demand changes to be made to this video report to correct all the
errors made and all the false information being spread amongst the
population of the world who have received distorted facts about the
issue. If this request is not followed in the near future, Euronews
will have to answer for their insult towards the nation of Azerbaijan
in International Court.

We are awaiting your reply with the date of the updated video report
about the roots and the true history of the Karabakh conflict.

Hope above is very clear."

ACNIS Holds Roundtable Discussion on Gender Equality and the State of
Women’s Rights in Armenia

Yerevan–The Armenian Center for National and International Studies
(ACNIS) convened a roundtable discussion today examining gender
equality and the state of women’s rights in Armenia.

After welcoming the participants, ACNIS Director Richard Giragosian
presented a brief overview of the issues, noting that `for most
countries, the issues of gender equality and the state of women’s
rights serve as key indicators of the overall development of society
and the state of democracy.’ Giragosian added that `in the case of
Armenia as well, the conditions of the female population, including
the opportunities for Armenian women in the workplace, the educational
system and in politics, present revealing insight into the real
conditions of today’s Armenia.’

The ACNIS Director explained that today’s event on gender equality and
women’s rights was the opening event in a larger ACNIS `Gender
Project,’ aimed at `advocating greater rights and opportunities for
women in Armenia.’ He then added that ACNIS `seeks to raise awareness
of the plight of women and the need to combat domestic abuse and
violence targeting women.’

Following Giragosian’s opening, the first speaker was Ms. Jina
Sargizova, the Project Coordinator for the UNFPA Programme on
Gender-Based Violence, who provided a detailed presentation of UN
activities in this sphere. Sargizova noted several significant
problems, including the lack of awareness, the absence of effective
legislation and inadequate institutional capacity in Armenia to
address the issue.

The next speaker was Tsovinar Harutyunyan, the Senior Democratization
Assistant for the OSCE Office in Yerevan, then presented an overview
of OSCE efforts in this area and stressed the potential of women as a
resource that is not being fully utilized.

A prominent attorney in Armenia, Tiruhy Nazaretyan, then addressed the
issue of women’s rights in the workplace and highlighted the fact that
for the same job, women are most often paid less than men performing
the same work.

The least speaker was ACNIS Analyst Armine Ghazaryan, who focused on
the role of women in Armenian politics. According to Ghazaryan,
`women often feel themselves at a disadvantage in comparison with men
because their life is based on the economic, political, psychological
and social dependence on men.’ She added that `the objective and
subjective approaches regarding the role of women in politics were
related to the existence of stereotypes in society.’ She went on to
say that `the approach regarding the political electoral contest and
the general issue should be changed but must not try to equalize man
and woman, as we will have real results and effective activity if a
woman, with her female privileges, does not emulate man but expresses
herself with her own position and role.’

The presentations were then followed by a series of questions and
answers, and featured a lively exchange among several leading Armenian
analysts, experts and journalists.
