A pre-dawn fire Thursday destroyed two historic homes in Fresno’s Old Armenian Town, where investigators believe transients are living.

The flames swept through the homes and heavily damaged other parts of the site on M Street at the Highway 41 overpass, on the south edge of downtown Fresno. Fresno Fire spokesman Shane Brown said the blaze erupted about 12:30 a.m.

Brown said flames were pouring out of one home when first units arrived, and the fire quickly spread to a second house.

There are multiple buildings on the site, and Brown said that all of the buildings, which are surrounded by a metal fence, have been broken into previously.

CIVILNET.In Armenia, George Floyd Solidarity Protest Takes Place Outside US Embassy

CIVILNET.AM

4 June, 2020 22:19

On May 25, 2020, George Floyd, a black man suspected of passing a counterfeit $20 bill, died in Minneapolis, Minnesota after Derek Chauvin, a white police officer, pressed his knee to Floyd’s neck for almost nine minutes while Floyd was handcuffed face down in the street. Two other officers further restrained Floyd while a fourth prevented onlookers from intervening. During the final three minutes of the video footage, Floyd was motionless and had no pulse, but officers made no attempt to revive him and Chauvin kept his knee on Floyd’s neck even as arriving emergency medical technicians attempted to treat him.

Following Floyd’s death, protests erupted in every state across the United States demanding that all four officers be detained and charged. While the demonstrations were overall peaceful, violence and riot did break out in cities across America, prompting some states to deploy the National Guard. Police brutality and systemic racism have long been an issue in the US. Black communities are disproportionately targeted by police and treated more harshly for minor offenses. The protests slowly spread across the globe, with peaceful demonstrations being held from Germany to New Zealand and the Netherlands. Today, those protests reached Armenia.

More than a week after Floyd’s death, all four police officers have been charged. Chauvin was previously charged with third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter and most recently, an additional charge of second-degree murder. The other three police officers were recently charged with aiding and abetting second-degree murder and aiding and abetting second-degree manslaughter.

CIVILNET.Hrant Dink Foundation Releases a Statement About Receiving a Death Threat

CIVILNET.AM

1 June, 2020 11:40

We would like to share with the public that on 27-28 May 2020 the Hrant Dink Foundation received a written death threat via email. We have duly notified the Şişli Police Headquarters and the Istanbul Governorship in writing. The email included the phrase ‘We may turn up one night, when you least expect it’, a slogan used boastfully in certain circles, and the very same slogan we were well used to hearing before Hrant Dink was so publicly assassinated, and with the knowledge of official bodies, on 19 January 2007. The threat accuses the Hrant Dink Foundation of telling ‘tales of fraternity’, demands us to leave the country and threatens Rakel Dink and the foundation’s lawyer with death.

The recent rise in unconstrained hate speech and racist, discriminatory discourse only serves to trigger, encourage and instigate such horrendous attitudes. It is the duty and responsibility of all actors engaged in politics in Turkey to work towards ensuring equality, freedom and justice for all citizens. We therefore believe that it is our duty to share this statement with the public to remind the authorities of their responsibilities and to emphasize the serious nature of the climate that has been created.

The Hrant Dink Foundation was established in 2007 to contribute to a just, free and equal Turkey; since then we have been doing all we can to work towards achieving these goals. We at the Hrant Dink Foundation would like to publicly announce that we will continue to combat discrimination in pursuit of our dream of a country that embraces difference, where all can live together peacefully, and where freedom of _expression_ prevails.

“Our plan was to start reconstructions this year, however the occurred situation made us change the decision,” Baramidze said, adding the approximate dates of the works are yet to be finalized.

As to the reports suggesting the area adjacent to the castle is reportedly used as a shelter for cattle, Baramidze said the local authorities are expected to address the matter. One solution is to fence in the territory and protect the site from external influences.

David Shahnazaryan calls for criminal prosecution against Prime Minister Pashinyan

Panorama, Armenia

“The real goal of Azerbaijan is not only to retake the territories, it lost as a result of defeat sustained in the war it started itself, to reinstate control over the former Nagorno-Karabakh Autonomous Region, but strange as it may seem, to seize also Armenia’s regions of Syunik, Gegharkunik, the capital Yerevan,  the entire Republic of Armenia,” former Director of Armenia’s national Security Service (NSS) Davit Shahnazaryan said in a statement. Shahnazaryan added that such aggressive anti-Armenian programs and goals have been officially and repeatedly voiced by the President of Azerbaijan and other high-ranking officials.

“The Republic of Azerbaijan uses various manipulations and lies in bilateral relations with various countries, as well as in the UN, the OSCE, the Council of Europe, the European Union, the CIS, the Non-Aligned Movement, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, the Cooperation Council of Turkic-Speaking States, other international platforms and local self-government bodies to press for adoption of resolutions, declarations, and formulas, denouncing Armenia and presenting it as an aggressor, an occupier, and a genocidal state,” said Shahnazaryan.

The former NSS director next cites Article 299 §1 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Armenia stating High treason – siding with the enemy, … or providing other assistance  by a citizen of Armenia for carrying out hostile activities to the detriment of the sovereignty, territorial inviolability  or external security of the Republic of Armenia is punishable by imprisonment for a term of ten to fifteen years with or without seizure of property.

“The statement made by Prime Minister N. Pashinyan ex officio at the National Assembly of the Republic of Armenia on May 6, 2020, that Azerbaijan is ‘constructive’ is an open political and moral assistance to Azerbaijan’s hostile activity against the territorial inviolability   and external security of the Republic of Armenia, as well as international assistance to Azerbaijan’s efforts to substantiate and promote its plans and goals across the international community for starting a new war,” Shahnazaryan said.

In his words, Prime Minister Pashinyan’s statement prima facie constitutes a crime envisaged by Article 299 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Armenia. This statement is a crime report to the Office of Prosecutor General of the Republic of Armenia, which is obliged to immediately initiate inquiry, launch a criminal case in the manner prescribed by law, and to institute a criminal prosecution against Prime Minister Pashinyan under Article 299 of the Criminal Code – “High Treason”.
