TWENTY-TWO PEOPLE DROWN IN JANUARY-JULY

Armenpress
Aug 28 2007

YEREVAN, AUGUST 28, ARMENPRESS: Twenty-two Armenians were reported
to have drowned in the first seven months of this year, three of them
in Lake Sevan.

According to Armenian rescue service, the bulk of these incidents
involved people who went fishing. It said also those who drowned in
Sevan were swimming in areas out f rescuers’ control.

However, these figures represent a significant decline from a year
ago when 37 people were reported to drown, 7 in Lake Sevan.

UNKNOWN PEOPLE ADVISED THE CHAIRMAN OF ‘SUPREME COUNCIL-DEPUTY CLUB’ NGO RUBEN TOROSYAN TO BE CAREFUL

Two cars with no state numbers stopped the car of the chairman of
‘Supreme Council-Deputy Club’ NGO Ruben Torosyan on the way from the
2-nd Block to Jrvezh on Monday. A ‘half-close face’ threatened him
‘Be careful, if you continue in that way, you will end badly’, the
organization’s press release says, which was also received in ArmInfo.

The source reports that R.Torosyan was with his son in his
car. R.Torosyan thinks that to all appearances, the incident is
connected with his recent statement about electoral violations,
military service and political prisoners. ‘It is not the first case
that my approaches to the above mentioned problems are becoming an
object of some high- ranking officials’ concern,’ he notes. ‘In this
connection, I state that I am going to continue my initiatives in
international structures, including the defense of political prisoners’
rights. I do not intend to accuse anybody of the incident, however,
I consider that in Armenia the authorities formed as a result of
electoral fraud are responsible for such cases,’ R.Torosyan says.

THE FIRST ARMENIAN MODERN HYPERMARKET STAR MEETS THE REQUIREMENTS OF THE MOST FREAKISH BUYERS

The first and modern supermarket of the STAR network, which was opened
in Nork Massiv III in Yerevan the other day, meets the requirements
of the most freakish buyers.

As the Marketing Director of the STAR company Narine Avetisian
told ArmInfo, the supermarket’s shopping space exceeds 2 000 square
meters. ‘The supermarket, which works 24 hours a day, meets the most
up-to-date requirements of retailers, both from the point of view of
assortment of goods and the level of services’, she noted. According
to her, 20 000 names of food and non-food products are sold in the
supermarket, which is meant for daily and weekly shopping. At the
same time, according to N. Avetisian, the large shopping space and
the wide variety of the assortment of each category of goods give a
possibility to offer the buyer a large price spectrum. ‘The quality of
the goods should correspond to their price,’ N.Avetisyan noted. She
added that the trade in the supermarket is carried out not only by
cash, but by means of plastic cards as well.

To note, with the opening of the first hypermarket, the STAR company
actually implemented a project of multi-format conception of retail
development, which consists of three main formats: small self-service
shops in the center of Yerevan (the metro format), medium-sized grocery
supermarkets in densely- populated regions (the supermarket format),
and large centers (the hypermarket format). By the end of 2007,
the retail food network of Star will have 10 shops of different
formats. At the moment, there are 5 STAR supermarkets: 2 shops in
Amiryan and Tigran Metsi streets, 2 medium-sized supermarkets in Avan
and Zeitun, and 1 hypermarket in Nork Massiv.

To note, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development has
owned 28,3% of STAR company’s shares since October 2006. Within
the next 2 years the company will invest about $16 mln in extension
of the network of STAR supermarkets and creation of a logistic and
distributive center.

Fresno: Fashion show aids Armenian kids

FINAL EDITION

Fashion show aids Armenian kids

by Maria Altebarmakian Edison High School

The Central Valley has many organizations that help give back to the
community. The Armenian Church Youth Organization of St. Paul
Armenian Church in Fresno has done so since 2003 by holding a charity
fashion show in late August.

Its goal of helping others goes beyond Fresno. The group tries to
help youth organizations in Armenia.

Members of the youth group act as models: rehearsing, going to
fittings and making sure everything is ready for the big event. They
even get a professional choreographer, George Juarez, to lay out the
steps for all the models.

This year’s fashion show will be held next Sunday at St. Paul
Armenian Church. Christina Karakashian, who has been involved in
planning this event since the beginning, answered some questions.

Question: How did the fashion show get started?

Answer: A few of the girls came up with the idea of having the
fashion show, which was a fun and unique way to bring together
everyone with the goal of raising money to help those in need.

Where do the profits go?

Each year, partial profits go to various charities and organizations
that are in need of support. The fashion show has benefited a variety
of organizations, such as the California Armenia Home, located here
in Fresno, as well as orphanages in Armenia. This year, the money
will be going to help build schools in Armenia, through the Knights
and Daughters of Vartan’s Armenian School Support Project.

How much time and planning are put into it?

Planning starts months before the event takes place. From securing
the location to preparing the layout for the runway, the planning
never ends. Now that the show is in its fifth year, we have become
veterans in the planning process. Keeping contacts with various
stores and merchants has allowed us to approach planning with more
ease.

How has it grown and changed over the years?

The first fashion show that was held in August 2003 was successful,
but those in attendance consisted mostly of family members of the
youth group members that were modeling in the event, and members of
the church. The production of the event, as well as the attendance,
has grown over the years. Each year, the show incorporates a theme
that is incorporated in the hair and makeup, decorations and music of
the show.

Each year, the show grows in ambience and scale to provide more to
the programs and charities.

PROSPECTS OF FIRST ARMENIAN PRESIDENT RETURNING TO POWER ARE NIL: LEADER OF NATIONAL DEMOCRATIC PARTY

Even if Armenian National Movement (ANM) party nominates a candidate
for president, particularly, ex-president Levon Ter-Petrosyan, the
prospects of the party’s return to power are actually nil, Leader of
the National Democratic Party of Armenia Shavarsh Kocharyan at the
Friday Discussion Club, Wednesday.

At the request of ArmInfo to comment on the recent actively spreading
rumors that the ex-president will return, Shavarsh Kocharyan advised
media to ask Levon Ter-Petrosyan if ‘he is aware that he will return to
power.’ In addition, a question arises: why should the first president
return? Whether he is to raise the same theses as 10 years ago saying
that Nagorny Karabakh must be transferred to Azerbaijan with a status
of maximal autonomy. ‘The people does not need this,’ he said.
