Serzh Sargsyan: Russia has provided Armenia with great support, and it is unacceptable to accuse it of provoking the war

ArmInfo.Russia has provided Armenia with tremendous support, and it is unacceptable to accuse it of provoking the war. The third President of Armenia Serzh Sargsyan stated this on August 19 during a press conference.

“As you remember, in 2010, Dmitry Medvedev, who at that time was the  President of Russia, paid a visit to Armenia. During this visit, an  additional protocol was signed, according to which the Russian  military base assumed additional obligations. The fact is that before  that the Russian base was responsible only for the external borders  of the CIS. However, according to the agreement signed in 2010, it  has already assumed responsibility for the entire length of the  Armenian border. Moreover, Russia has also assumed the responsibility  to update our weapons. Before the April events of 2018, Armenia  received more than 50 000 tons of military-technical assistance from  Russia. In this case, assistance means that you do not have to pay  for it, “Sargsyan stressed.

The third president noted that it is wrong to say in such a situation  that Russia allegedly knew about the forthcoming April war. It’s  unacceptable to make such statements.

“Russia is our strategic ally. Spreading such ideas is ignorance, and  accusing an ally of provoking a war, that is, of betrayal, is  impermissible. It is obvious that such statements will have  consequences, “the third president of Armenia noted. You should  remember that no one except Armenia has an “Iskander”, not even  Belarus. And Azerbaijan in 2016 did not go to full-scale military  actions because of “Iskander”. Therefore, the very fact that we have  this weapon speaks of a special attitude of Russia towards Armenia,  “Sargsyan noted.

He also noticed that the Azerbaijani Armed Forces began hostilities  using special forces.

Sargsyan also stated that many believe that Moscow could stop the  fighting in Artsakh with one call.

Today is Asbarez’s 112th Anniversary

August 14,  2020

Asbarez turns 112 years old.

One hundred and twelve years ago today, August 14, 1908, the first issue of Asbarez rolled off the presses, ushering in a tradition that until today remains true to the newspaper’s simple, yet profound mission—to become an arena (Asbarez) for the community and to build a bridge between the homeland and the Diaspora.

We thank you for your unwavering confidence in Asbarez. You, our readers, along with our community organizations and institutions, as well as our sponsors, advertisers and supporters are part of the diverse landscape that compels us to do better every day and advance our mission.

Since our last anniversary, we have all experienced—and Asbarez has covered—the global and national tectonic shifts that have come to define our every-day reality. The coronavirus pandemic this year has brought with it challenges—both personal and economic. Just in the past several weeks we have not only seen the escalation of Azerbaijan’s aggression against Armenia’s national security, but have witnessed a tragedy, and an escalation an already fraught crisis, when a massive explosion rocked Beirut and with it our community in Lebanon.

The challenges brought on by COVID-19 forced Asbarez to make difficult decisions based on public health and economic considerations. While during the initial weeks of the pandemic we paused our print publication, we quickly resumed it, albeit in an abridged manner, always with the intention to return to our daily routine. Never during this time, however, did we falter in our commitment to our readers and ensured that accurate news coverage, in-depth analysis and service to our community continued unabated. For this, we have to thank the dedicated Asbarez staff.

Since our centennial in 2008, it has become an anticipated tradition to mark our anniversary with you by asking for a symbolic birthday gift. However, our National priorities—helping the soldiers of the Armed Forces of Armenia and Artsakh and coming to the aid of compatriots in Lebanon—take precedence and require that we unite and collectively address the needs of our Nation.

You remain the backbone of our success and we are here to continue to inform and engage you through our website, print publication, email newsletters and social media platforms, while expanding the arena—Asbarez. We welcome you to join us.

Azerbaijani press: Azerbaijani Defense Ministry: Raised battle readiness of Armenian army reflects fear

By Trend

Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Defense commented on the information on raising the level of combat readiness of the Armenian armed forces of central subordination, including the military units of the first echelon, and their unexpected inspection, Trend reports with reference to the Defense Ministry.

This is done because of fear from the Armenian authorities, caused by the joint Azerbaijani-Turkish exercises held in Azerbaijan, the Defense Ministry noted, adding that the personnel of the Azerbaijani army constantly improves its professionalism and combat effectiveness in daily training and exercises.

“The combat capability and military potential of the Azerbaijani army is the most important indicator that will provide an advantage over the enemy on the battlefield,” said the ministry.

“If the Armenian side again resorts to provocations, a worthy response will follow,” the defense ministry said.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. As a result of the ensuing war, Armenian armed forces occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts.

The 1994 ceasefire agreement was followed by peace negotiations. Armenia has not yet implemented four UN Security Council resolutions on the withdrawal of its armed forces from Nagorno Karabakh and the surrounding districts.

Azerbaijani press: Deputies of Latvian Saeima condemn Armenia’s provocations against Azerbaijan

BAKU, Azerbaijan, July 23

Trend:

The latest Armenian provocations, committed in the direction of Azerbaijan’s Tovuz district on the Azerbaijani-Armenian border, were condemned by the deputies of the Latvian Saeima, the Azerbaijani Embassy in Latvia told Trend.

Condolences were expressed to the Azerbaijani people in an open letter in connection with the death of Azerbaijani servicemen as a result of artillery shelling by the Armenian armed forces. The letter was written on behalf of 15 members of the group for promoting cooperation between the Latvian Seim and the Parliament of Azerbaijan, and sent to the Azerbaijani-Latvian inter-parliamentary working group.

The parties also expressed serious concern about the military escalation on the Azerbaijani-Armenian border and called on the sides to resume peace talks.

The members of the group highlighted the occupation by the Armenian armed forces of parts of the Azerbaijani territories and expressed their hope that Armenia will be active in their liberation, which will allow people to return to their historical lands.

Following continuous ceasefire violations of Armenia’s armed forces, the country launched another military provocation against Azerbaijan on July 12. Grossly violating the ceasefire regime, Armenian armed forces opened fire in the direction of Azerbaijan’s Tovuz district.

As a result of the appropriate measures, the Armenian armed forces were silenced. The tensions continued on the border, July 12 night. During the night battles, by using artillery, mortars and tanks, the Azerbaijani armed forces destroyed a stronghold, army vehicles.

As a result of the shelling, many houses in the Tovuz district’s border villages were damaged.

Ex-ambassador to Holy See: Today’s leadership made Armenia a third country

Ex-ambassador to Holy See: Today’s leadership made Armenia a third country Ex-ambassador to Holy See: Today’s leadership made Armenia a third country

20:39, 12.07.2020

The current leadership of the Republic of Armenia made Armenia a third country. Mikael Minasyan, Armenia’s former Ambassador to the Holy See and son-in-law of ex-President Serzh Sargsyan, said this Sunday in his new video where he answered the questions of Facebook users. He stated the aforesaid in connection with the process around the Constitutional Court (CC) and the decision of the European Court of Human Rights to deny one of the requirements of the petition by CC outgoing president Hrayr Tovmasyan and three outgoing judges of the court.

“During the last 20 years, there was a very interesting trend in Armenia when perhaps the best cream of the Armenian youth began to be bear the Western values. (…). My friends are many of them who, for example, do not understand the silence of the embassies [in Armenia], the silence of the international community because they have to realize and deal with reality. The current leadership of the Republic of Armenia made Armenia a third country, and there is no system of values in third countries, third countries are treated as a third country. (..). If you expect an objective assessment from European institutions, why not expect an objective assessment from that character (…)? We [Armenia] are the only country where a grant recipient has fought against the KGB for 10 years to spread democracy, and now he is fighting for the KGB,” Minasyan said․

According to him, the reason is that Western values are good if there is no realpolitik; and as soon as it comes, everything changes at once, and the poor Armenians remain, who still hope for the “kind uncles” who will come to help.
“I do not think Western values apply to any particular country. Western values are the same Christian values at whose basis is democracy, the system of values, and human rights. (…) Realpolitik must also bring us to a real system of values. I laugh at the silence of the last 2.5 years of all European institutions, and I sincerely hope and am sure that they will continue to be silent for another 5 years, so that we have the opportunity, for example, to judge with a clear conscience, without noise the 89 + 1—[PM] Nikol Pashinyan and our dear MPs of the National Assembly—for violating all kinds of laws,” Minasyan added, in particular.
