Turkish Press: Azerbaijan backs Turkey’s activities in Eastern Med

Azerbaijan backs Turkey’s activities in Eastern Med

Ruslan Rehimov   | 17.08.2020

BAKU

Azerbaijan on Monday voiced support for Turkey’s seismic activities in the Eastern Mediterranean, saying Ankara was protecting its rights.

“Azerbaijan openly supports Turkey’s activities in the Eastern Mediterranean. Turkey protects its rights in the region under international law,” Hikmet Hajiyev, assistant to the president and foreign policy chief for Azerbaijan’s Presidency, told local media.

Referring to Armenia’s provocative statement about the Treaty of Sevres and its position on the Eastern Mediterranean, Hajiyev said this was an attempt to intervene in issues that did not concern Yerevan.

The 1920 Treaty of Sevres, an unfair pact imposed on the Ottoman Empire after World War I, was replaced in 1923 by the Treaty of Lausanne — signed by Turkey on one side and Britain, France, Italy, Greece and their allies on the other — that recognized the modern Turkish state.

He said the country was trying to cover up its own occupational policies by accusing other countries.

Upper Karabakh, or Nagorno-Karabakh, an internationally recognized territory of Azerbaijan, has been under illegal Armenian occupation since 1991.

“I think that everyone should know their place and should keep within bounds,” he said, adding that diplomacy was “a serious field” where there is no room for “irresponsible” statements.

“With such a statement, Armenia first of all humiliates itself. I’m sure Armenia has no news of the events in the Eastern Mediterranean and the only reason for the statement is that the subject is of interest to Turkey,” he said.

Turkey opposes Greece’s efforts to declare an exclusive economic zone in the Eastern Mediterranean based on small islands near Turkish shores, violating the interests of Turkey, the country with the longest coastline in the Mediterranean.

Ankara has also said energy resources near Cyprus must be shared fairly between the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) and the Greek Cypriot administration of Southern Cyprus.

Yervand Khundkaryan President of Armenia Constitutional Court?

News.am, Armenia
Aug 18 2020

18:52, 18.08.2020

During the meeting with judge candidate of the Constitutional Court Yervand Khundkaryan, who is nominated by the General Assembly of Judges, the deputies of the My Step faction of the National Assembly also asked him questions about holding the position of President of the Constitutional Court. This is what deputy of the My Step faction Lusine Badalyan told reporters today.

Asked what kind of questions the deputies had asked Khundkaryan, Badalyan said the following: “The questions were particularly related to the cases that the judge candidate has examined in the past. We asked all of our questions, but I can’t say that the answers were very exhaustive.”

Asked if she sees Khundkaryan as President of the Constitutional Court, Badalyan said the following: “He didn’t show the pretensions to become President of the Constitutional Court, even if he had pretensions. All judge candidates of the Constitutional Court are potential Presidents of the Constitutional Court for the My Step faction.”

When told that during the meeting reporters heard how MP Sos Avetisyan had said that Khundkaryan has the pretension to become President of the Constitutional Court, Badalyan said she might have missed that part and the issue has been raised from time to time.

Talking about the meeting earlier, head of the My Step faction Lilit Makunts had tried not to answer reporters’ question about the possibility of Khundkaryan becoming President of the Constitutional Court and stated the following: “I can’t say anything about the judge candidate becoming or being elected or not elected President of the Constitutional Court because the candidate also has to come to parliament where he will be asked questions, after which deputies will decide whether they will vote in favor or against Khundkaryan.”

Turkish Press: US expert challenges Armenian documents on 1915 events

Turkiye Newspaper, Turkey
Aug 20 2020

Armenian claims discussed more because Christian Armenians gained more sympathy in Christian West, says academic

An academic in the US argued on Thursday that there is “no document proving that the killing of Armenians was an official policy” of the Ottoman Empire in 1915.

Speaking at Turkish-American Security Foundation (TASFO), Michael Gunter of Tennessee Tech University explained that well-known documents published by Armenian author Aram Andonian in 1919 to supposedly prove deliberate massacres, were fabrications.

Having conducted research on the events of 1915, Gunter said Armenian claims had a greater audience because Christian Armenians had gained more sympathy in the Christian West.

“Also, Muslim Turks were historical enemies of the West. Since Armenians also spoke Western languages better than Turks, they were able to convey their messages to the West better,” explained Gunter, a professor of sociology and political science.

Emphasizing that he hoped an academic dialogue would be initiated between the advocates of Turkish and Armenian theses in the US, Gunter pointed out that Turkish-Americans would be willing to do so, but Armenian-Americans had never accepted such an endeavor.

He stressed that many Armenians in the western parts of the Ottoman Empire had not been deported, adding that some Armenians had been killing innocent Muslims for decades without interruption.

“For genocide to exist legally in international law, planning or premeditation must be proven, and it has not been proven on this issue,” he said.

Turkish stance on the 1915 events

Turkey’s position on the events of 1915 is that the deaths of Armenians in eastern Anatolia took place when some of them sided with the invading Russians and revolted against the Ottoman forces. A subsequent relocation of Armenians resulted in numerous casualties.

Turkey objects to the presentation of these incidents as “genocide”, describing them as a tragedy in which both sides suffered casualties.

Ankara has repeatedly proposed the creation of a joint commission of historians from Turkey and Armenia as well as international experts to tackle the issue.

JAM News
Aug 12 2020

    JAMnews, Baku

The alleged supply of weapons from Serbia to Armenia during the recent escalation on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border from July 12-16, 2020 was the reason for the arrival of and meetings with Serbian Deputy Prime Minister Nebojsa Stefanovic in Baku on August 11.

However, at a press conference following the meeting, neither side commented on the issue of the alleged arms delivery.

Buzz around this story rose at the end of July 2020, when reports about the supply of weapons to Armenia from Serbia caused Baku to voice protest.

Georgia was also involved in the scandal after the Azerbaijani newspaper haqqin.az announced that the weapons supplied were transported through Georgian territory.

The Georgian Ministry of Foreign Affairs categorically denied this information.

On August 7, the topic of arms supplies was raised during a telephone conversation between the presidents of Serbia and Azerbaijan, Aleksandar Vucic and Ilham Aliyev.

Official reports state that the head of Azerbaijan expressed regret over the fact that Armenia used weapons produced in Serbia during the battles near the village of Tovuz.

Vucic replied that a delegation from Serbia would be sent to Azerbaijan to investigate the issue.

Whether this promise has been fulfilled by the current visit of the deputy prime minister is unknown.
