self-determination is an issue of greatest importance," said Armenia’s
Foreign Minister Edward Nalbandian at the joint conference with EU
Commissioner for Enlargement and European Neighborhood Policy Stefan
Fule, who is on a visit to Armenia.

Armenia’s President Serzh Sargsyan are made in the same line.

"If this most important issue is solved, then it will be easier

ANKARA: A Compelling Reason To Open Armenia Border

A COMPELLING REASON TO OPEN ARMENIA BORDER

Hurriyet Daily News
April 5 2010
Turkey

If ever there was a powerful argument for the normalization of
relations between Turkey and Armenia, it is not to be found in
arguments over history, debates on the Treaty of Sevres, linkage to
issues in third countries or the implications for the price of energy
imports. Certainly, these must be tackled in the fullness of time. But
the most powerful argument is the case of 21-year-old Arthur Manukyan.

As readers of the Hurriyet Daily News are aware, we have strongly
supported the initiative between the governments of Turkey and Armenia
to begin a "normalization" process that includes opening of the land
border and re-establishment of diplomatic relations. We see this as
a step in a sure-to-be-long process. But it should not be prey to
nationalist machinations from either side, the politics of U.S. ethnic
lobbies or the designs of diaspora lobbies – Turkey’s or Armenia’s.

The ratification of negotiated protocols by the two countries’
parliaments are imperative for reasons far closer to home, reasons
such as that of Manukyan.

For Manukyan suffers from a deadly disease know as "Moyamoya syndrome,"
a rare disease that restricts the blood flow to the brain, leading to
seizures, stroke and death if untreated. The treatment, essentially a
set of miniature bypasses administered through a series of surgeries
that take up to a year, is often successful. And the treatment is
not available in Armenia.

It is available in Turkey. Manukyan is now receiving treatment at the
Yedikule Surp Pırgıc Foundation Hospital, a facility established
by Turkey’s Armenian community. Doctors there are working with their
colleagues at Istanbul University’s CerrahpaÅ~_a Medical Facility to
save young Manukyan’s life.

"If we were in Armenia, my son would have already died," the patient’s
mother, Hasmig Manukyan told us in the report we published yesterday.

But techically, Manukyan is in Turkey illegally. We are certain that
no one will seek to deport him, despite the recent controversy of
recent threats to expel undocumented workers. But he should not be
in this legal twilight zone.

Today it is Manukyan. Tomorrow, it may be someone in Turkey’s medically
under-served province of Kars who needs medical treatment of a kind
only available in Yerevan, less than two hours away by car.

Good fences may make good neighbors, but closed borders do not. And
Manukyan’s case powerfully illustrates why this is so.

Immediately, Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan should act upon
a request made by Turkey’s Archbishop Aram AteÅ~_yan to facilitate
whatever legal steps are necessary to clarify and assure Manukyan’s
status to be legally treated for the duration of his therapy. This
should be followed as soon as possible by completion of the faltering
process to open the borders between our two countries.

BAKU: Armenia ‘Reluctant’ To Approve Renewed Madrid Principles – Ana

ARMENIA ‘RELUCTANT’ TO APPROVE RENEWED MADRID PRINCIPLES – ANALYST

Rasim Musabeyov ‘Armenia does not want to recognize the updated Madrid
principles proposed by the OSCE and already approved by Azerbaijan’,
said political analyst.

Political analyst Rasim Musabekov commented on the proposal to the
Azerbaijani side to "recognize Karabakh’s right for self-determination"
expressed by the Armenian President and Foreign Minister of Armenia.

"The Armenian side is jabbering about the ‘right of self-determination
of the Karabakh people’ and has been interpreting it as it wants over
the past 20 years.

During this period, it became clear that all the compromises to which
the Armenian side was mediated by international representatives are
no more than a verbal shell. That is official Yerevan calmly disavows
its words and commitments and starts talks about ‘self-determination’
every time", said Musabekov.

"And this time, Sargsyan and Nalbandian have raised the issue of the
right of mythical ‘Karabakh people for self-determination’, for the
purpose of putting a smokescreen and distract world attention from
Armenia, which must present its opinion about the updated Madrid
principles.

In fact, Armenia does not want to recognize the updated Madrid
principles proposed by the OSCE and already approved by Azerbaijan.

But Sargsyan will not dare to refuse the proposals of the co-chairs.

However, Armenia won’t be able to fool the international community,
which is waiting for a clear answer from Yerevan – whether they
want to continue the peace negotiations, or refuse them", noted the
political scientist.

/PanARMENIAN.Net/ Rock legends Tony Iommi and Ian Gillan are planning
to record a few new songs to raise more funds for the music school
in Gyumri, Armenia.

"n was at mine a few weeks back, and we put a couple of tracks down,
just to try and raise some money for Armenia. We raised some money 20
years ago and we wanted to do it again, to be able to buy stuff. We
went over a few months ago because they gave us an Order Of Honor from
the president and so Ian and I went over and Pat Cash came. They showed
us what the money had bought. They showed us this old music school,
it was freezing and the kids had no instruments so we bought them
some new instruments – drums and guitars – and we want to build a
new school for the kids," Iommi said in an interview with Metal Hammer.

"We’re going to do a few songs and, hopefully, we can raise the
money to afford to buy them a new school. The plans are quite open
at the moment. We’ve talked about doing a couple of shows out there,
but it’s about working round what we are both doing – because we
[Heaven And Hell] hope touring will start again soon."

Tony Iommi and Ian Gillan were in Armenia on October 1-2, 2009,
in the framework of Mediamax-implemented Armenia Grateful 2 Rock
project. Ian Gillan’s charity concerts with the Philharmonic Orchestra
of Armenia took place in Yerevan on March 26 and 27, 2010, and the
entire proceeds totaling AMD 18 mln 327 thousand, will be spent for
construction of the building for N6 music school in Gyumri.

Turkish Lawyer Persecuted For Urging Genocide Recognition

Istanbul lawyer Serhat Kamil Zor brought legal action against his
colleague Bendal Celil Ezman, Turkish Zaman daily reports. The latter
appealed to the court, demanding the recognition of the Armenian
Genocide. Serhat Kamil Zor accuses Ezman of offending Turkish nation,
slander of state bodies and actions conflicting with professional
lawyer’s duties. In his plea, Kamil Zor says he was born in one of the
villages in Erzurum province, noting there are many settlements with
Armenian and Greek names. In addition, he claims that during Russia’s
invasion in the beginning of last century, Armenians massacred Turks.

As NEWS.am reported earlier, Turkish lawyer Bendal Celil Ezman appealed
to the Turkish court, demanding the recognition of the Armenian
Genocide, condemnation of Talat Pasha and renaming of streets with
the latter’s name. The lawyer pointed out that he was denied to be
given the documents on the trials held in 1918 and 1922, when those
responsible for displacing Armenians in April and May 1915 were found
guilty. Turkish lawyer charges Talat Pasha’s committee members with 220
and 3713, 76, 77, 78 articles of Turkish Criminal Code, which indicate
that 1915 mass crimes against Armenians are labeled as Genocide.
