Panorama, Armenia
Jan 20 2018

Standing Committee on Foreign Relations of the Artsakh Republic Natioanl Assembly iissued a statement today on the 28th Anniversary of the mass pogroms of the Armenian Population in Baku.

“28 years ago, on January 13-19, 1990, the Azerbaijani authorities organized and carried out mass massacre of the Armenian population in Baku. About a quarter of a million of Armenians, on the ground of the national affiliation, were subjected to violence and deportation. According to international human rights organizations, hundreds of Armenians became victims to torture and the property of Armenians was subjected to plundering and confiscation. The disintegrated Baku went down in history as the “city of three massacres” (1905, 1918 and 1990),” reads the statement, released by the National Assembly press service.

It is recalled that the events that took place in Baku in the bloody days of January 1990, carried out with the knowledge and intent of the Gorbachev regime, were the implementation of the genocide of the Armenians of Azerbaijan, a policy by which Baku was striving to silent the voice of Artsakh people raised for the realization of their right to self-determination. Today, the Azerbaijani authorities take every measure to hide their genocidal actions by falsifying the facts and avoiding responsibility.

“Paying tribute to the memory of the innocent Armenians died in the massacre and deportation of Baku; being convinced that the impunity of the crime leads to the new crimes, which the civilized community once again witnessed during the new military aggression unleashed against the people of Artsakh in April 2016, the Standing Committee on Foreign Relations of the National Assembly:

– condemns any manifestation of terrorism, xenophobia and extremism;
– insists that the violence organized against Armenians of Baku, the whole Eastern Transcaucasia, as well as the North Artsakh and Nakhijevan fully corresponds to the legal formulation of the crime of genocide defined in the 1948 United Nations Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide;
– reiterates that the Republic of Artsakh will remain consistent in bringing the organizers and implementers of the genocide of Armenians of Azerbaijan to justice;
– calls upon the international community and parliamentary institutions to give legal assessment to the massacre of the Armenian population in Baku and take steps against the continuing anti-Armenian propaganda in Azerbaijan to prevent its possible consequences,” the statement concludes.

Azerbaijani press: Protest mood ups in Armenia due to worsening socio-economic situation

6 January 2018 11:58 (UTC+04:00)

Baku, Azerbaijan, Jan. 6

Trend:

Protest moods are becoming more active in Armenia this year due to the deterioration of the socio-economic situation and a sharp rise in prices for essential products, believes Armen Martirosyan, the deputy chairman of the opposition Heritage party.

The year 2018 started in Armenia with the rise in price of gasoline, diesel fuel and gas at filling stations. The rise in price is linked with amendments to the Tax Code and increased excise taxes.

Chairman of the Union of Armenian Employers Gagik Makaryan, in turn, believes that the rise in price of gasoline and gas will affect all sectors of the Armenian economy. “The prices have increased more than expected. The rise in price of compressed gas may lead to an increase in transport prices, “Makaryan said.

The price of ‘Regular’ gasoline grew by about 5 percent compared to the end of 2017 and by 10 percent compared to the beginning of December 2017. At the beginning of December 2017, gasoline cost 390 drams ($0.80), at the end of December 2017 it cost 410 drams ($0.84), and starting from Jan. 1 it costs 430 drams ($0.89).

The price of diesel fuel grew 7 percent, having risen on the New Year’s eve from 410 drams ($0.84) to 440 drams ($0.91).

The price for gas at filling stations increased most of all. Before the New Year, it was sold at 180-200 drams ($0.37 – $0.41) per cubic meter, but starting from Jan. 1, the price grew 10 percent. About 90 percent of cars in Armenia, including city transport and taxis, use natural gas.

In addition, a gradual rise in price of more than 800 items of goods is expected in Armenia.

World Kindertransport Day event hopes to inspire younger generation

Burbank Leader (Glendale, California)

World Kindertransport Day event hopes to inspire younger generation
Anthony Clark Carpio, Burbank Leader, Glendale, Calif.
Dec. 02--The nonprofit that puts on an annual commemoration for World
Kindertransport Day in Burbank is expanding the event to honor and
remember those who have been affected by the Armenian Genocide.
The Southern California chapter of the Kindertransport Assn. will host
a candlelight walk against persecution and genocide at 6 p.m. on
Sunday in front of Burbank City Hall, at 275 E. Olive Ave.
After a few words from city officials, those participating, including
survivors of the Kindertransport, are expected to walk with candles in
hand to the Colony Theatre at 555 N. Third St., where several guests
are scheduled to speak about the Kindertransport and Armenian
Genocide, said Janet Diel, co-chair of the event.
Rachel Rubin-Green, president of the Southern California chapter of
the nonprofit, is scheduled to speak about the Kindertransport, which
was a rescue effort before the start of World War II that saved the
lives of about 10,000 children, most of them Jewish, from countries
occupied by the Nazis.
Afterward, David Meyerhof, a member of the Burbank Human Relations
Council, is slated to honor Varian Fry, who was one of the many people
who helped the children flee to England.
However, Diel said this year's ceremony is expanding to commemorate
rescuers and refugees of the Armenian Genocide.
Armond Aghakhanian, a member of the Burbank Unified school board, is
expected to give a presentation about the genocide of Armenian people
by the Ottoman Empire that occurred from 1915 to 1923, during which
more than 1.5 million Armenians were killed.
Aghakhanian, as well as Michael Soehner and Bev Weise, is scheduled to
talk about the status of the refugee crisis, Diel said.
"It's not a political issue," said Diel about the free event on
Sunday. "It's a life issue."
She said she hopes it starts a dialogue, especially with children and
teens, about what they can do to put an end to persecution of any kind
in the world.
"What I tell children is that it isn't just about what these amazing
men and women experienced, because they got up every single day with
two choices: live or die," Diel said. "It's about hearing what
happened to them as children and what they did to survive. I tell the
children that they are the future, and the key to helping keep all
people safe and helping us move forward with tolerance, understand and
love for one another."
Diel, who wears many hats and volunteers with numerous nonprofits and
organizations in Burbank, said that she and her generation have done
what they could to invoke some kind of change in society, with hopes
of making the world a better place for everyone, and that it is up to
younger generations of children to continue that effort.
"The cure to this disease we call hatred has to come from the young
people, and it has to come by each one of them reaching out to one
more person," Diel said. "That's how they can help."

Azerbaijani Press: Lavrov: ‘Menu’ on Karabakh conflict settlement on negotiating table

APA, Azerbaijan
Nov 20 2017

The ‘menu’ on the settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict is on the negotiating table, Russian Foreign Minister said on Monday.

“All steps towards the resolution of the conflict have been discussed multiple times and have appeared in OSCE documents and statements of the co-chairs. The ‘menu’ is on the negotiating table,” Lavrov said at a joint press conference with his Azerbaijani counterpart Elmar Mammadyarov in Baku, APA reports.

He said that the documents on the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict’s settlement have been compiled as a package.

“It is impossible to exclude this element or another. The opposite party may think that the balance shifts. Diplomacy will find an option acceptable for both sides,” Lavrov noted.

Asked about the possibility of increasing the number of the OSCE Minsk Group co-chairs, Russia’s top diplomat said it was the first time he had heard such a question.

“There is an agreed format for resolving the conflict. The three co-chairs do not work in isolation. The Minsk Group also has sides interested in the settlement process. You’re the first person I’ve seen asking about increasing the number of co-chairs of the Minsk Group. A new proposal may lead to the intentional or unintentional breach of the process,” added Lavrov.
