Turkish Denialism Of Armenians Continues Even With ExhibitionOrganiz

TURKISH DENIALISM OF ARMENIANS CONTINUES EVEN WITH EXHIBITION ORGANIZED IN
BRUSSELS
BRUSSELS, November 18 (Noyan Tapan). The Palace of Fine Arts of
Brussels (Belgium) hosts the exhibition on Turkey entitled “Mothers,
Goddesses and Sultans”, which will last from October 06 2004 to
January 16 2005. According to the Assembly of Armenians of Europe, the
exhibition accounts pieces from the collection of the Topkapi Palace
(Turkey), Louvre, Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna, the museums of
Berlin and the most important museums in Turkey. This exhibition is
organized with the mutual agreement of the prime ministers of Belgium
and Turkey in order to introduce the Belgian and European society
with the cultural values and the history of Turkey and intends to
emphasize the European vocation of Turkey.
The leaflet on the exhibition distributed to the visitors at the
entrance of the Palace of Fine Arts says: “We encounter the peoples,
who have left their traces in Anatolia in the course of 9000 years. The
journey takes us through such renowned cultures as the Hitties, Greek
and Roman antiquity, Byzantium and the Ottomans.” From the first
sight one may find the absence of the Armenians and Armenian culture
in Anatolia very strange, since for centuries the Eastern Anatolia
was the cradle of Armenians and it is also called the Armenian
Plateau[i]. Even during the Ottoman Empire Armenians represented a
sizeable and dynamic part of the ottoman population, particularly in
Istanbul and other urban centre, and their omission in this exhibition
is quite deliberate on the part of the Turkish organizers. But the
most interesting piece of the exhibition is the map of the Ottoman
Empire from 1299 to 1923, without any mention of the Armenians or
Armenian Republic (the first Armenian Republic, 1918 – 1920) and
Greece (independence of Greece recognized by the Ottoman Empire in
1832). No expert or historian would dare to make a single map to
represent such a complex region over for such a long period of time
(1299 – 1923), since the movement of borders has been radical over
the period considered, and at times extremely rapid.
It is very strange to see the name of “Azerbaijan” on the map, while
the names of Armenia and Greece are absent. As reported by Radio
Free Europe, the Azerbaijani Defense Ministry spokesman called for
Azerbaijan’s (the closest ally of the Republic of Turkey) takeover
of the entire territory of Armenia and removal of the entire Armenian
population from the Caucasus. He went so far as to say, and we quote,
“Within the next 25 years there will exist no state of Armenia in
the South Caucasus.” This inevitably reminds of the intentions of the
perpetrators of the Armenian Genocide. In this context the negationism
of the Armenians is not a simple mistake or lack of professionalism
by the organizers of the exhibition, but has its roots go back into
the beginning of the 20th century – the Armenian Genocide committed by
the Ottoman Empire in 1915. The Armenian Genocide is still denied by
the Republic of Turkey, which also imposes a blockade on the Republic
of Armenia for more than 10 years. Therefore, the radical exclusion
of Armenians from ottoman history is consistent with the genocide
carried out in 1915-1916 and it has been the practice in Turkey since
the establishment of the republic in 1923. The negationism and the
denial of the Armenian Genocide are also reflected in the premeditated
annihilation of Armenian cultural heritage in the territory of the
actual Republic of Turkey.
The Assembly of Armenians of Europe considers such negationist and
revisionist attitude of the Republic of Turkey, aspiring to the EU full
membership unacceptable. We believe that such behaviour destabilizes
the whole region of South Caucasus and impedes the normalization of
Armeno-Turkish relations. Moreover, the extension of this denialist
approach to an exhibition carried out in Belgium, in partnership with
Belgian institutions, is a worrying sign at a moment when Turkey is
pressing to join the European community of values. The Assembly of
Armenians of Europe is sure that this is an attempt of the Turkish
authorities to force their own denialist approach on an unsuspecting
European public.

LA: Southland leads country in stolen auto exports

Southland leads country in stolen auto exports
By Jason Kandel, Staff Writer
Los Angeles Daily News, CA
Nov 22 2004
With two of the nation’s largest ports and a U.S. border nearby,
Southern California leads the nation in one line of auto exports —
stolen cars that are being shipped overseas, where they fetch as much
as four times what they’re worth here.
Organized crime rings in Los Angeles, aided by scores of body shops,
contribute heavily to an auto theft industry that adds to an annual
loss of $8 billion nationwide.
About 1.2 million vehicles are stolen every year in the United
States — 70,000 of them in Los Angeles County — and some 200,000
are illegally exported.
“It’s like a kid in the candy store. There are so many vehicles out
there to look at and to steal,” said California Highway Patrol Lt.
Jeff Lee, an expert in Russian organized crime. “The money these
people are making, shipping them overseas, is phenomenal.”
In recent years, police in the San Fernando Valley have noted an
increase in activity by an organized ring of Russian Armenians who
have been lured from cigarette and jewelry store burglaries to auto
theft. The pickings are easy in car-crazy L.A., the risk of getting
caught is minimal and the penalties are lenient, officials said.
“You’ve got guys you could call career auto thieves,” said CHP Sgt.
John Antillon, who supervises a cargo theft team at the Port of
Los Angeles.
While it is unknown how many cars are shipped out or driven over the
border every year, the CHP said it intercepted nearly $8 million worth
of stolen vehicles at the Port of Los Angeles in 2003, and recovered
up to 5,000 stolen vehicles in Mexico.
“That amount of money makes it a lucrative endeavor for organized
rings and professional operators,” said Robert M. Bryant, president
and chief executive officer of the National Insurance Crime Bureau.
Greg Terp, who chairs the North American Export Committee —
a coalition of authorities committed to combating the global auto
theft problem — said he has seen auto theft rings run by the Mafia,
as well as Asian, Eurasian, Eastern European, South American, Central
American and Caribbean crime groups.
“They’re organized,” he said. “They’re making a lot money out of it.”
State and national authorities are working together to break up
auto-theft rings. CHP officers are now in Ukraine to train police
there on auto theft detection techniques.
U.S. authorities also are using computer technology to read the
license plates of vehicles passing through the U.S. borders with
Mexico and Canada.
Investigators conduct regular inspections of chop shops, sifting
through tons of metal and debris, but it’s a tough fight.
“The challenge is trying to take down these organized groups and stop
it before it gets overseas,” said Sgt. Rodney Ellison of the CHP’s
Vehicle Theft Unit, headquartered in Sacramento. “It’s a big problem.”
Ray Unsell, a special agent with the National Insurance Crime Bureau,
based in Las Vegas, said car thieves take advantage of the relatively
low risk and huge payoffs. But taking down a tangled criminal
organization can be frustrating.
“It is difficult to prove any actual connection because you don’t have
people talking,” said Unsell, who regularly works with Los Angeles
and California authorities on auto theft cases in Las Vegas.
“You have a choice in Russian organized crime — if you talk, you’re
dead. The people inside know what their status is.”

BAKU: Azeri FM urges foreign envoys to respect int’l law

Azeri foreign minister urges foreign envoys to respect international
law
Baku, 18 November: Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov has
received the ambassadors of countries of the European Union and the
Organization of the Islamic Conference, as well as the US and Chinese
ambassadors.
The minister spoke highly of the efforts of the countries which
supported on 29 October Azerbaijan’s initiative to include the issue
of the “situation on the occupied Azerbaijani territories” in the
agenda of the 59th session of the UN General Assembly.
Mammadyarov drew the attention of the foreign diplomats to Armenia’s
settling the occupied Azerbaijani territories, which runs counter to
the norms of international humanitarian law and provision 949 of the
Geneva Convention. In this connection, the Azerbaijani foreign
minister stressed the importance of the international community’s
principled position to prevent this illegal activity.
The minister added that the purpose in raising this issue with the UN
was not to replace the OSCE Minsk Group, but to attract the attention
of international organizations to the problem.
In conclusion, the minister expressed the hope that the countries the
diplomats represented at the meeting would support Azerbaijan and
that the world community would respect the norms of international
humanitarian law.

Aliyev: Hampering participation of Armenians in NATO seminar in Baku

ALIYEV: HAMPERING PARTICIPATION OF ARMENIANS IN NATO SEMINAR IN BAKU
CAN BE USED AGAINST AZERBAIJAN
Pan Armenian News
Nov 11 2004
BAKU, 11.11.04. Stir should not be created around the NATO seminar,
Azeri President Ilham Aliyev stated, when commenting the protest
actions, held by representatives of the Azeri society on the occasion
of the arrival of the Armenian delegation in Baku for participation
in the NATO Parliamentary Assembly Rose-Roth seminar. `Azerbaijan
will not agree to concessions in maters of principle. But if we do
not admit Armenians` participation in the seminar, it will be used
against us,` the Azeri President said. Having expressed Azerbaijan`s
desire to hold international forums in the country, I. Aliyev
indicated that if Baku refuses from the measures, Armenia will merely
gain from that. Besides, as noted by the President, Armenian Prime
Minister, deputies and other officials had arrived in Azerbaijan
earlier. As of the Cooperative Best Effort – 2004 NATO exercises in
September, when the Armenian military were not admitted to Baku and
the NATO leadership canceled the maneuvers in Azerbaijan, he himself
did not let Armenians to the country, as the issue was a matter `of
principal`, I. Aliyev said.

Family dreams of putting down roots

Family dreams of putting down roots
by Leslie Ferenc, Toronto Star
The Toronto Star
November 9, 2004 Tuesday
It’s heaven on Earth, where people are kind, caring and compassionate.
That’s how Arif and Narmina feel about Canada, where they sought refuge
just four short months ago to escape persecution by the heavy-handed
government in their homeland.
Arif, 41, was a translator by profession, working for a multinational
petroleum company. He lost his job because he was a Talishian
nationalist struggling for independence from Azerbaijan. Narmina, 31,
an English teacher, faced discrimination because of her Armenian roots.
“The government repressed us,” Arif explained, adding the family’s
only hope for the peaceful life they’d been dreaming of was to leave
everything behind and start fresh on new soil.
The couple and their 9-year-old daughter Sabina arrived here in July
with what they could carry.
Last month, daughter Nutella was born.
“Canada is a unique country and creates all opportunities for those
who come here like us and begin from scratch,” said Arif, who is
looking forward to making his way in this country.
Although they live meagrely on social assistance in a North York
apartment, depend on the food bank for meals and the furniture bank
for a table and beds, Arif said his family has been truly blessed.
“We feel it,” he said of the support the family has received from
the community.
“It’s tremendous help.”
Thanks to the generosity of Toronto Star readers, Sabina and Nutella
will receive gift boxes from the Santa Claus Fund.
They’ll be among 45,000 children in Toronto, Mississauga, Brampton,
Pickering and Ajax to get a special delivery this Christmas.
Arif’s heart bursts with gratitude.
“Sabina will be so happy,” he said, adding Canadians are generous,
giving people.
“We thank God we’re here.”
But their future remains uncertain. The family is waiting for a refugee
hearing and Arif is praying they’ll be allowed to stay in Canada.
“We’re anxious to get our work permits and social insurance numbers
so we can get established, so we can stand on our own feet,” he said.
And they’re looking forward to their first Christmas here.
“It will be a very special time,” said Arif, adding he’s hoping it
will be a white Christmas.
“Canada is a winter country, a cold country and we’re waiting for a
winter Christmas.”
Let’s make it an unforgettable Christmas for Arif’s children and all
the others by generously supporting the Santa Claus Fund.
The target is $1.3 million, and the Star absorbs all administrative
costs, so all proceeds go directly into buying the gifts.
Together, we can do it for the kids.

Armenian government deprives telecom giant of monopoly

Armenian government deprives telecom giant of monopoly
Arminfo
4 Nov 04
YEREVAN
The Armenian government has approved the candidacy of a second
cellular communications operator in Armenia, the K-Telecom closed-type
joint-stock company.
The Armenian government press service reports that K-Telecom’s
application has been considered and approved by the tender commission
led by Communications and Transport Minister Andranik Manukyan. The
commission was set up late at night yesterday under decision No 1238
of the Armenian government dated 4 November 2004. According to a
source in the government, the K-Telecom company is an Armenian
subsidiary of the Nagornyy Karabakh cellular communications operator,
the Karabakh Telecom closed-type joint-stock company.
At its extraordinary session yesterday, the Armenian government
decided to deprive the ArmenTel company of a monopoly on cellular
communications. The government decided to deprive ArmenTel of the
monopoly on GSM services, cellular satellite communications and
special radio communications on the 900 MHz frequency.
The new communications operator will have an opportunity to connect
its network to the network of the ArmenTel company. In return,
ArmenTel will have the exclusive right to Internet and telephony
services. The executive authorities instructed the justice minister to
hold negotiations within 10 days and to conclude an agreement with the
ArmenTel company on behalf of the Armenian government.
Arminfo learnt that Karabakh Telecom had purchased and leased land in
Yerevan back in October 2003 for aerials for a future cellular
communications network. Karabakh Telecom Director-General Ralf
Eyrikyan has neither confirmed nor denied this information. Karabakh
Telecom has invested 15m dollars in the Karabakh cellular
communications. According to the latest data, there are 3,500 cellular
communications subscribers in Karabakh.
The Karabakh Telecom closed-type joint-stock company gained a licence
of the Nagornyy Karabakh government in February 2002 to jointly own
the Nagornyy Karabakh telecommunications network for 30 years.

Kenya Does Well At Olympiad

Kenya Does Well At Olympiad
The Nation (Kenya)
Nov 05, 2004
Nation Correspondent
Kenya moved up 24 places to the 95th position in the international
chess federation rankings (FIDE) after the World Chess Olympiad in
Calvia, Spain.
Ukraine dethroned Russia to become the new Olympiad champions, winning
the gold medal. Russia won the silver medal and Armenia the bronze
after beating the US team on tie-break.
The Kenyans played their hearts out in the 14-round event and among
the casualties in the final rounds were Aruba and Cyprus whom the
Kenyans beat by a score of 3l-l and 3-1 respectively.
These two wins catapulted the team 10 places upwards.
University of Nairobi student Ben Nguku, making his debut at the
international stage, was the toast of the Kenyan team. Nguku was
placed 25th on Board Four with a percentage performance of 62:5 per
cent. Kenya finished ahead of Uganda, Barbados, Angola, Nigeria and
Libya. The 14-round contest featured 129 countries.
Out of the 13 men’s team from Africa, Kenya was ranked at the
respectable fifth position behind Botswana, Tunisia, Morocco and South
Africa which was the best African team.
The Kenyan women made their maiden appearance at the Olympiad and even
though they were ranked second from last but they managed to notch up
memorable wins against Libya and Japan with identical scores of 2-1.
The team arrived back in the country this week.
Meanwhile, the national junior team is in Greece to take part at the
World Youth Chess Championship in Crete Island.
Brian Obilo will spearhead the Kenyan onslaught in the event playing
in the boys’ under 12 age category.
Obilo made his debut at the international scene in July this year when
he took part at the sixth Chess Festival in France.
The experience should come in handy in Crete and he is expected to
post better results than in France.
Other players who travelled to the annual youth event were: Vaishnavi
Rammohan (girls under 10), Shiv Shah (boys under 10), Isabelle Asiema
(girls under 14) and Kush Shah (boys under 14). Over 80 countries will
be taking part represented by over 1,000 players. This will be the
fifth time Kenya will be competing at the event
Kenya Chess Association secretary, Lawrence Kagambi accompanied the
team as head of delegation.
