Asbarez: U.S. Screwing Kurds Again

Garen Yegparian

BY GAREN YEGPARIAN

On Wednesday, December 20, 2018 President Donald Trump issued an order as commander-in-chief of the U.S. armed forces to withdraw the 2000 U.S. troops in Syria, via a Tweet!

These forces have been fighting Daesh/ISIS jointly with the Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG) based in northern Syria.

The ramifications of this action are many, with lots of beneficiaries (alphabetically – Daesh/ISIS, Iran, Russia, Syria, Turkey) since the U.S. will be out of the way with no ground presence, even though it is possible American air power may still be used. But only one group will bear the cost – the Kurds. I will only address the Kurdish angle, though that runs through Turkey. I won’t even join the mob of speculators wondering why Trump did this.

The U.S. has been arming, training, and otherwise supporting the Kurds of Syria. The primary reason has been to use them, as very able and committed fighters, to eliminate Daesh/ISIS in Syria. Now, Trump has declared “victory” over that murderous entity, despite an August report that estimated 30,000 of those extremists remained in Iraq and Syria. This reeks of George W. Bush’s premature and utterly inaccurate “mission accomplished” declaration about the Iraq invasion.

This announcement by Trump seems to have surprised the various agencies in Washington, D.C. that would ordinarily have a stake and say in such matters. Interestingly, and perhaps tellingly, Turkey’s Erdoğan was among the first to learn of this by phone after he “assured” Trump that Turkey could mop up the remaining Daesh/ISIS forces (a very dubious assurance since Turkey helped them and got them into Syria).

This brings us to the Kurds, who are Erdoğan’s boogeymen, bêtes noire, demons, nightmares… (you get the idea) and he considers those in Syria to be an extension of the PKK which has been fighting for Kurdish liberation in Turkey. Washington’s cooperation with the Kurds in Syria has stuck in Erdoğan’s craw. It has been a major contributor to tense Turkey-U.S. relations in the last few years.

Erdoğan has tried everything to dissuade Washington of its Kurdish cooperation. Nothing worked. Then, Erdoğan got himself in a serious jam when he shot down a Russian plane. He had to make amends by kissing up to the Kremlin, which gave him an idea. He could kill two birds with one stone. By pretending to cozy up to Putin, he could purchase missile systems from Russia, or at least pretend to do so. This seriously ruffled NATO feathers since it might lead to security breaches, but, Erdoğan didn’t care. And now we know why. Just a few days ago, the U.S. State Department approved a $3.5 billion Patriot missile sale to Ankara. Though this has not yet received final approval, it makes very clear what has been going on. Erdoğan has gotten what he wants… again.

The Kurds are now royally screwed. Regardless of how able they are as fighters, the sheer preponderance of numbers and military equipment that Turkey has over them makes the outcome a foregone conclusion. Once the 2000 U.S. troops have been withdrawn (which will take roughly three months), the potential for Turkish troops fighting and or killing any of them will be eliminated. How would such a clash come about, you might wonder? Erdoğan has been threatening to enter northern Syria to eliminate the Kurdish forces he dreads. With Americans in their midst, that could have been a real problem. Now, once they’re gone, Erdoğan will have a free hand. Turkish forces are already being mobilized north of the Syrian border and Hulusi Akar, Turkey’s defense minister, has threatened to “bury” Kurdish forces in Syria, according to the “Washington Post”.

The Kurds usefulness to the U.S. now being largely (if not completely) finished, they are being turned over to the tender mercies of Ankara. This resembles what Washington did to the Kurds of Iraq in in 1975. After supporting and arming them through Iran and Israel to extort concessions from Iraq, the Kurds were left to the tender mercies of Baghdad and its Arabization policies.

Now, the Kurds have few options. They can fight to the death, providing Turkey with an excuse to massacre non-combatant Kurds (something it may well do anyway). Their fighters could try to blend in with the general population by laying down their arms – either turning them over to the Turks, hiding them, or giving them to their compatriots in Iraq and Turkey. Most likely, they will cut a deal with the Syrian government. Of course Damascus has no love for the Kurds. But, they were allowed to go their own way, without much rancor, when the Syrian army had its hands full fighting various anti-government forces. This suggests that the two sides might be able to come to some accommodation, despite Damascus’s lack of interest so far. After all, President Assad and the rest of Syria’s leadership must know that if Turkey expands its already significant presence on Syrian soil, it will be a long time before Ankara withdraws its occupying forces.

So what should Armenians do in this mess? Some of our compatriots will be directly affected since they live in the Kurdish controlled zones of Syria. Otherwise, short of a few volunteers going to help fight Turkey, there’s not much we can do except to keep developing and expanding our relationships with our closest, and potentially friendliest neighbors, the Kurds.

Produce company owner named recipient of Fresno’s top business award

Fresno Bee, CA
Dec 20 2018

Mathias “Matty” Matoian thought he’d been summoned to meet Fresno State’s president Joseph Castro to advise his friend on university business.

But the meeting was a ruse to lure the unsuspecting Matoian to an ambush by friends and family organized by the Fresno Chamber of Commerce, who revealed that he is the 2019 winner of the chamber’s top business honor, the Leon S. Peters Award for business leadership and community service.

Matoian, 75, is the longtime owner of OK Produce, the fruit and vegetable distribution business started in 1950 by his parents, Charles and Ann Matoian. Matty Matoian joined the family business after graduating from Fresno State in 1965, and took over leadership of the company in 1979.

The Peters award is akin to a lifetime achievement award in Fresno’s business community and has been presented each year since 1984. It is named for longtime businessman, civic leader and philanthropist Leon S. Peters, the son of Armenian immigrants who rose to business success as the owner of Valley Foundry & Machine Works. The award criteria recognize a recipient’s business accomplishments as well as personal and public service and philanthropy to the community.

Matoian said he was stunned when Castro ushered him into a boardroom in the university’s library to be greeted with applause from prior Peters award winners, including retired Fresno County Superior Court Judge Robert Oliver and last year’s recipient, caterer Jim Pardini. “Oh, my God, whoa,” he said after the event. “As soon as I saw Bob Oliver and Jim Pardini, then I knew something was up.”

“It’s an unbelievable experience to be able to receive this award,” he added. “It’s kind of cool looking around at all of these successful people and then you get to be a part of that.”

Adding to the surprise was that Matoian had recently written a letter to support another person’s nomination for the Peters award.

Oliver recounted highlights of Matoian’s contributions to Fresno. “Matty was responsible for growing a business that Charles and his mom had made successful,” Oliver said. “It became a huge operation” with more than 100 tractor-trailer rigs hauling produce daily from one end of California to the other.

Among organizations that have benefited from the Matoian family’s philanthropy are Community Medical Centers, Fresno State, Break the Barriers, Valley Children’s Hospital, Saint Agnes Medical Center and the Poverello House.

“Matty’s kind of a quiet guy,” Oliver added. “He does a lot of things and he does them very quietly.”

At Fresno State, a road on the campus is named Matoian Way to recognize Matoian and his family, said Castro.

“Matty is a very good friend of mine and of the university,” Castro said. “He’s so deserving of this award. He is a role model in the community for integrity and thoughtfulness, compassion and, of course, philanthropy.” Castro said Matoian has underwritten scholarships for students in the university’s Business and Health & Human Services schools as well as provided support for athletic programs over the years.

Matoian deflected the praise. “The thing my father always told me is, ‘We made our money here in Fresno, Matty. This is where you want to give back,’” he said. “That’s why it’s been really cool and gratifying for me to be able to give back to the place that was so good to us.”

As his voice cracked with emotion, he added that he wouldn’t be in a position of success without his parents, aunt and siblings. “”It’s not been an easy road,” Matoian said, “but it’s been a great venture.”

Since Matoian retired in 2008, his sons Chad and Brady are in charge of the company’s day-to-day operations.

The chamber will formally present the Peters award – a medallion emblazoned with the image of its namesake – at its annual Valley Business Awards luncheon in February at the Fresno Convention Center.

At this stage, there is a need for Robert Kocharyan to be in custody. Prosecutor

At this stage of the investigation of the March 1 criminal case, there is a need for the second president of the Republic of Armenia, Robert Kocharyan, to be in custody. RA General Prosecutor Artur Davtyan said this in a conversation with journalists, presenting the position of the General Prosecutor’s Office of the Republic of Armenia

According to him, the position of the prosecutor’s office is that Robert Kocharyan should remain in custody, for which they provide justifications. “These justifications prove that at this stage of the investigation there is a need for the second president to be in custody. I think only the court knows what decision the court will make,” said Artur Davtyan.

Referring to the decision of the Court of Cassation, which overturned the decision of the Court of Appeal to abolish the detention of Robert Kocharyan on the grounds of immunity and sent the case to the Court of Appeal for a new examination, Artur Davtyan explained in detail what question the Court of Cassation answered with that decision.

“Do you remember the most basic question being discussed in broad circles is whether or not the president is endowed with immunity after taking office or not? And the Court of Cassation, in fact, agreeing with the arguments of the complaint brought by me, confirmed that the fact that the act attributed to him is considered to be based on his status or not based on his status is of essential importance here.

And most importantly, already canceling the relevant decision of the Court of Appeals and thus the approach of the Court of Appeals that the second president of the Republic of Armenia is in fact endowed with immunity, and the actions attributed to him were considered by the Court of Appeals as stemming from the president’s functions, the Court of Cassation gave a clear answer that the circumstance of stemming from the functions should not be considered only from a formal point of view.

In other words, for example, does the president have the authority or right to adopt a relevant legal act or not, but it is necessary to consider whether the implementation of the authority fully complies with the Constitution or the laws in terms of content,” said Davtyan.

Robert Kocharyan, let’s remind, is accused of subverting the constitutional order with a group of people in the case of March 1.

On July 27, Yerevan Court of General Jurisdiction chose a two-month detention as a preventive measure against him. On August 13, however, the Court of Appeal overturned that decision of the first instance solely on the basis of the immunity granted to the President by the Constitution.

Both Robert Kocharyan’s defense attorneys and Chief Prosecutor Artur Davtyan appealed to the Court of Cassation to appeal the decision of the Court of Appeal to cancel Kocharyan’s restraining order. The Court of Cassation partially satisfied only the prosecutor’s complaint.

I will not hide that there were also discussions in Minsk about the General Secretariat of the CSTO. Ararat Mirzoyan, Acting First Deputy Prime Minister of the Republic of Armenia, announced this in a conversation with journalists.

He constructively assesses the discussion on the General Secretariat of the CSTO with the President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko during the small session of the Prime Ministers of the EEU countries in Minsk.

Ararat Mirzoyan replied to the question whether the issue surrounding the CSTO General Secretary and the latest statements were discussed with Lukashenko. “I represented Armenia in the EAEU Governmental Council, within the framework of which a meeting of prime ministers, including me, was held with the President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko with

During the meeting, various issues were discussed, including complex issues, including those not directly related to the EEU, but related to other formats of this partnership, I will not hide it, we also talked about the General Secretariat of the CSTO. Of course, I won’t give details, because it was a closed discussion, but I can assure you that the discussion and the position of the Russian Prime Minister, the President of Belarus, and our other partners were quite constructive.”

He confirmed that they also talked about Lukashenko’s meeting with the ambassador of Azerbaijan, to which Nikol Pashinyan reacted strongly. “We talked about all nuances, all sub-issues, but with your permission I will not give details.”

When asked to what extent he considers this controversy resolved, Mirzoyan answered: “It’s not a contradiction, I would call it a problem. If there is partnership in different formats, there are also problems that are solved or not solved. This is one of those problems. Of course, the issue was not resolved yesterday, because first of all, it was not that format, this was an EEU meeting, not a CSTO meeting, naturally, it could not be resolved. But soon another meeting of CSTO will take place and then maybe the issue will be resolved. The discussion I participated in was very constructive.”
