Newspaper: Authorities attempting to use currency situation in Armenia for another bluff

NEWS.am
Armenia – July 9 2022

YEREVAN. – Past daily of Armenia writes: For a long time, the situation in the Armenian financial market has been quite volatile; day by day we witness the devaluation of the [US] dollar and the euro.

Among specialists, there is an opinion that some circles of the authorities are quite skillfully “warming [their] hands” in this market. Such opinions among the public have started to worry the authorities, and, as it seems, no matter how strange it sounds, they are attempting to use this currency situation for another bluff.

According to Past newspaper’s information, in recent weeks the authorities are assigning special “emissaries” to spread information among the population in the provinces that the devaluation of the dollar and the stabilization of the [Armenian currency] dram, against its background, will lead to a decrease in the prices of [natural] gas and electricity.

Moreover, we also have information that during the past one month, some satellites serving the authorities are spreading and circulating this topic on virtually all possible internet platforms. Our source conveys that the said “emissaries” are also attempting to convince the population that the authorities are already taking concrete steps in this direction, as if even a delegation went to Moscow to negotiate in connection with the topic.

However, a number of specialists in this domain emphasize that this is another bluff, as in this matter, an important circumstance is how long the strengthening of the dram will continue; after all, in the short term, that effect cannot be large, which can have no effect whatsoever on the price of [natural] gas, in particular.

At London Conference, Armenian Ambassador highlights systematic destruction of cultural and religious heritage by Azerbaijan

Public Radio of Armenia
Armenia – July 7 2022

Ambassador of the Republic of Armenia to the United Kingdom Varuzhan Nersesyan represented Armenia at the Ministerial conference International Ministerial Conference on Freedom of Religion and Belief held in London July 5-6.

In the national pledge Ambassador Nersesyan reiterated Armenia’s commitment to democratic values, human rights including freedom of religion and belief. With a key emphasis on the plight of Christians in the Middle East, Ambassador highlighted the necessity of protecting and restoring the historic presence of Christianity in the region and Armenia’s consistent efforts towards the restoration and preservation of that millennia old heritage.

Ambassador Nersesyan emphasized Azerbaijan’s systematic destruction of the Armenian cultural and religious heritage in Nagorno-Karabakh, as a vivid manifestation of religious intolerance and hatred. Ambassador drew attention to the targeting and desecration of the Holly Saviour Cathedral in Shushi during and after the 2020 war against Nagorno Karabakh, as well as the destruction of numerous other significant sites stressing how alarming this is against the backdrop of the complete annihilation of the Armenian religious and cultural heritage in Nakhichevan.

The Ambassador also highlighted Azerbaijan’s neglect towards the implementation of the International Court of Justice’s ruling (7/12/2021) which instructed the Azerbaijani state to prevent and punish acts of vandalism and desecration of Armenian cultural heritage.

Ambassador Nersesyan concluded by underlining the urgent need to review and reshape existing international mechanisms responsible for the protection of human rights and freedoms and reaffirmed Armenia’s readiness to cooperate with all interested partners in protecting the rights of religious minorities and upholding the international community’s common shared values.

Brad Sherman: US should stop providing military aid to Azerbaijan

NEWS.am
Armenia – July 5 2022

The US administration has again reaffirmed the waiver of Section 907 of the Freedom Support Act, which bans direct military aid to Azerbaijan. In an interview with Voice of America, Brad Sherman, a member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee and of the Congressional Armenian Caucus, expressed his disagreement with this decision

We should not abandon Section 907 and provide any assistance to oil-rich Azerbaijan, which has unleashed an aggressive war. The aid we provide is not large, but I believe it is important diplomatically; so, it should be stopped, said the US congressman.

In his opinion, American aid for humanitarian projects in Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh) should be increased, and Armenia should be given the opportunity to be included in the Millennium Challenge program.

The World Bank ranked Armenia among those with above-average income. I would like it to be so, but we have to take into account the economic consequences of the terrible war, the coronavirus pandemic, Sherman said.

Armenia does not see much progress in talks with Turkey

Public Radio of Armenia
Armenia – June 30 2022

Armenia does not see much progress in the negotiation process with Ankara, Armenia’s Special Representative for normalization talks with Turkey Ruben Rubinyan told reporters at the National Assembly today.

“Since the beginning of the process, Armenia has been very constructive, Armenia has the political will, and the success of this process depends on the political will of Turkey. As you can see, up to this point there has not been much progress” he said.

Rubinyan said there is no specific document on the table and reiterated that there is no issue of “re-delimitation” of borders on the agenda.

The Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly noted that the proposal of the Turkish side to hold a meeting in Yerevan implies that “the Turkish colleagues consider the process to be two-sided.”

“But in this context, the statements of some Turkish officials that they coordinate or coordinate the process with Azerbaijan are a bit strange. But I repeat that the main thing in the process is political will, if there is will, the rest is easy to solve,” Rubinyan stated.

He added that the lack of progress so far does not mean there cannot be any in the future.

The Special Representatives will hold their fourth meeting in Vienna on July 1.

Armenia parliament opposition: Authorities’ removal from power is inevitable

NEWS.am
Armenia – July 1 2022

The opposition “With Honor” and “Armenia” Factions of the National Assembly (NA) of Armenia on Friday issued a joint statement. It reads as follows, in particular:

“(…) the authorities of the day adopted decisions to recall NA vice president [and opposition member] Ishkhan Saghatelyan and NA Standing Committee on Economic Affairs chairman [and opposition member] Vahe Hakobyan from the [aforesaid] positions.

The situation is absurd in that it is being done to distract the public from the existing security challenges, the possible threat of war which they themselves have declared, the Berdzor [(Lachin)] issue, new concessions [to Azerbaijan], and the issue of not returning the [Armenian] prisoners of war [in Azerbaijan] to the homeland to this day.

The international community, despite the obvious retreat of parliamentarism, persistently tries not to notice the current situation, whereas such behavior by the [Armenian] authorities should have been followed by a sharp and immediate reaction [by the international community].

With this behavior, the authorities of the day once again confirm that they are concerned only with positions, busy with persecutions, lacking any opportunity to face the challenges facing the country, have no legitimacy, do not represent the interests of Armenia and Artsakh [(Nagorno-Karabakh)]. And under these conditions, [their] removal [from power] is inevitable.”

U.S. Says Looking Forward to Minsk Group Role in Karabakh Settlement

OSCE monitors along the Artsakh-Azerbaijan line-of-contact before the 2020 war

The role of the OSCE Minsk Group and its co-chairs, tasked with mediating a settlement to the Karabakh conflict, remains obscure after Russia insisted that the group had no further role to play in the matter, while the United States insisted that it is looking forward to the group’s continued work.

Days after Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov announced in Baku that because of posturing by the U.S. and France the Minsk Group had ceased its activities, the State Department’s Bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs on Tuesday accused the Russian co-chair of rejecting an invitation to discuss the future of Karabakh.

“The US Co-Chair of the OSCE Minsk Group spoke with her colleagues today to discuss the future of Nagorno-Karabakh. Unfortunately, the Russian co-chair did not accept the invitation. We look forward to continuing the work of the Minsk Group,” said a message posted on the State Department-affiliated group’s Twitter page.

The message also reflected a position voiced by U.S. Assistant Secretary of State Karen Donfried, who during a visit to Armenia earlier this month said that the U.S. would be willing to work with Russia to find a settlement to the Karabakh conflict.

Lavrov’s statements last week echoed the sentiments prevalent among Azerbaijani leaders, especially the country’s president Ilham Aliyev, who has on numerous occasion deemed the Minsk Group co-chairs’ mission obsolete.

During a virtual press conference on Monday, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said he was surprised at Lavrov’s comments since he and President Vladimir Putin of Russia had issued a statement calling for the resumption of the Karabakh talks under the auspices of the OSCE Minks Group.

On Tuesday, Azerbaijan’s foreign ministry called on Yerevan “to not waste time on resuscitating” the OSCE Minsk Group.

In a statement, Azerbaijan’s foreign ministers said that Pashinyan’s statements about the normalization of Armenian-Azerbaijani relations “cast doubt on Yerevan’s ambitions to establish lasting peace in the region.”

“If Yerevan really wants peace, it should show political will and take concrete steps toward peace instead of wasting time on resuscitating a format, the effectiveness of which has always been low and whose members now openly admit its impossibility (of the OSCE Minsk Group).”

At the same time the ministry noted that “the statement by the Prime Minister (Nikol Pashinyan) that ‘opening of communications is beneficial for Armenia,’ signals a new approach from the Armenian leadership. It seems that Armenia needs time to accept the truth. We hope it will not take long for Armenia to realize the effectiveness of the ‘Zangezur Corridor,’ which has already become a reality.”

This portion of the statement is referring to a land corridor, proposed by Aliyev, that would connect mainland Azerbaijan with Nakhichevan—a matter that Yerevan has on many occasions unequivocally rejected.
