The Society for Armenian Studies
Newsletter Volume XLII, No. 1, Fall 2018

Message From the President:

Since its inception in 1974, the Society for Armenian
Studies has played an important role in advancing
the field of Armenian Studies in the U.S. However,
the field has changed and developed dramatically in
the last forty four years. From a handful of Arme-
nian Studies chairs and programs and a small group
of scholars, today there are more than 14 chairs and
programs in the United States that are extensively in-
volved in research and teaching on the undergraduate
and graduate levels.
Research in the field of Armenian Studies in the U.S.
has also advanced. More and more graduate students
are conducting interdisciplinary research, bridging
Armenian Studies with history, literature, linguistics,
sociology, and political science among others. Despite
these developments, Armenian studies faces substan-
tial challenges with the major challenge being how
to make the field relevant in the 21st century with the
changing nature of the academic world and staying
strong in an era of declining interest in the humanities.
SAS is currently involved in addressing these issues.
We are revamping the organization to stay current
with the ever-changing pace of the academic world.

With this aim in mind, SAS is bringing in new energy.
This year more than twenty members joined the

organization. We also intend to involve SAS members
in the activities of the Society. We believe that through
collective work, we will be able to achieve our goals.
Furthermore, we understand that today’s graduate
students are tomorrow’s leaders in the field and the or-
ganization. Hence,
we are planning on focusing a great deal of energy
on developing and mentoring the more than 40 or so
graduate student members. Since I assumed the
presidency of the Society in January of this year, we
are pursuing the following projects:

1) In order to understand the condition of the So-
ciety, we have undertaken two surveys: One dealt with
the relations of the SAS with the Armenian Chairs
and Directors of Programs and the other dealt with the
general membership. The surveys were conducted by
Executive Council member Dr. Vahe Sahakyan. The
results are published in this newsletter.

2) We are updating our membership on a
bi-monthly basis with the latest scholarship produced
by its members. To date, we have sent out six an-
nouncements.

3) We have launched the SAS Podcast Series,
which interviews the authors of the latest books in
Armenian Studies. To date, we have conducted 8 inter-
views and more are on the way.

4) We have prepared an extensive list of the digi-
tal archives of primary sources pertaining to Armenian
Studies so that scholars can have easier and faster
access to these sources.

5) We are collaborating with other Armenian
chairs and academic programs.

6) We are continuing with our Annual Conference
Series. This year it is dedicated to the Centennial of
the Republic of Armenia (1918-1920)

7) Inauguration of the SAS-Fresno State Arme-
nian Studies Series-Publication Series is underway.

I am confident that with your involvement we will be
able to develop these projects and add new ones. It is
my hope that the SAS will become a strong organiza-
tion. I am looking forward to meeting all of you at our
annual meeting in November 15, 2018 and welcome
any comments or suggestions you might have.

Best,
Bedross Der Matossian
President of the Society for Armenian Studies (SAS)

Armenia to test pilot agriculture insurance project

ARKA, Armenia
Nov 14 2018

YEREVAN, November 14. /ARKA/. Armenia’s ministry of agriculture will launch a pilot insurance project in 2019, the acting Minister of Agriculture Gegham Gevorgyan said today during a parliamentary discussion on next year’s draft budget.

He said the preparatory work took almost 24 months. The pilot project will involve 2-3 provinces and apply to 2-3 types of agricultural products. Gevorgyan said the project will be ready at the end of November and will be carried out jointly with local insurance companies. In this context, he pointed out the importance of the installation of anti-hail grids.

Armenia’s ministry of agriculture said earlier that the program with a total budget of 10 million euros to be provided on a parity basis by the government and donors would be launched in March 2019 and embrace three provinces of Ararat, Armavir and Shirak.

In Ararat and Armavir regions the insurance project was to involve damages caused to vineyards and fruit orchards, in Shirak region to potatoes and grains.

The ministry said also that by the end of 2018 the government would set up the National Agency for Risk Assessment and Management to correctly assess the risks. Damage caused to crops in Armenia amounted to 6 billion drams in 2018, down from 12 billion drams in 2017 and 33 billion drams in 2016. ($ 1 – 488.68 drams). -0-

Sports: Henrikh Mkhitaryan may finally find stability under Unai Emery within Arsenal’s flourishing quartet

The Independent, UK
Nov 11 2018
  • Tom Kershaw

During better-weather times at Borussia Dortmund, Henrikh Mkhitaryan was the type of wriggling winger whose niftiness became so nagging it warranted a hearty hack.

A keen and confident dribbler, the Armenian forged a prolific partnership with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Marco Reus and Shinji Kagawa at the Westfalenstadion – the quartet within which the 29-year-old was ordained Bundesliga Player of the Year in the 2015/16 season.

And for a short stint, it seemed as though Mkhitaryan might bring that same yellow vibrancy to England as he notched five assists in three Premier League games after joining Manchester United.

But to most purveyors of the Premier League, those days, when it was fathomable that Mkhitaryan was one of the world’s best midfielders, are a matter of mythology compared to the off-colour flaxen with which we have been treated in the following years.

Slowly and systematically, his confidence was bled by Jose Mourinho – withdrawn in the FA Cup third-round, left out of seven out of eight matchday squads entirely, until the Special One enacted the last sweep of his sword upon the Armenian’s exit: “He realised he was not ready for this reality – physical, mental, competitiveness.”

And while many pointed to Mourinho’s peculiar propensity to neuter rather than nurture, what most unsettled Mkhitaryan at Manchester United was that he was never given time to settle and establish a bond with his teammates, crucially, on the pitch.

In his time up north, the likes of Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial, Romelu Lukaku, Jesse Lingard, Juan Mata, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, and on the oft occasion Marouane Fellaini were all auctioned around like vintage clobber.

And in his first season at Arsenal, Mesut Ozil, Aaron Ramsey, Alex Iwobi, Alexandre Lacazette, Jack Wilshere and Danny Welbeck too were all interchanging – a far cry from that fabled season in North Rhine-Westphalia when Dortmund’s aforementioned foursome bedded in to claim 177 appearances between them.

Perhaps that is why, when asked whether this front-four is the most exciting he has ever played in, the Armenian diplomatically sidestepped such a query.

“I think it makes your job easier [having world class strikers],” he said. “From the left side you have Auba, from the right side you have Lacazette, you can play in the middle where Mesut is taking position so it makes things more easy. It’s a [dream] for me and I think for the others as well.”

After being afforded an unlikely start alongside those three against Liverpool, Mkhitaryan was a rare streak of light in an otherwise drear draw against Sporting on Thursday night.

So is it this new atmosphere, the stable buoyancy, surrounding Arsenal one in which Mkhitaryan can finally find the comfort which both supports and stirs him?

“I can say, ‘Yes’,” he grinned in regard to the upbeat atmosphere.

“The culture has changed a bit in the club. Now people are believing more in ourselves because we are playing a bit differently, we’re giving them confidence and playing the way they want us to play. We’re scoring goals and we’re winning games.”

And it’s that imperative, yet so temperamental trait – confidence – which Unai Emery repeated in no less than four successive sentences during his post-match interview on Thursday.

“The confidence can come,” the Arsenal boss said. “Firstly from winning matches, and then also from when you feel it on the pitch you have a capacity to battle against teams with the potential of a Liverpool.”

Perhaps now that self-belief can manifest in Mkhitaryan too. The harsh stint among the moods of Manchester over, the cruel thrust into Arsene Wenger’s turbulent pasture aside, instead finally faced with the prospect of becoming party to a new quartet. On the brink of embarking on a last serenade, Mkhitaryan might have his opportunity for English football to bring out, and witness, the best of him.

Makaryan: With any threat to the territories of Armenia, the Armenian-Russian united group of forces will be obliged to use all their forces

Makaryan: With any threat to the territories of Armenia, the
Armenian-Russian united group of forces will be obliged to use all
their forces
Yerevan 12.10.18
Marianna Mkrtchyan. In case of any threat to the territories of
Armenia, the Armenian-Russian united group of forces will be obliged
to use all their forces. The deputy chief of the General Staff of the
Armenian Armed Forces, Andranik Makaryan, told reporters on October 12
at the Baghramyan proving ground.
According to him, its structure includes all subdivisions and units of
the Armed Forces of Armenia, and those forces that are called upon to
ensure the security of the country. When asked what danger should be
in order to activate the united grouping of troops, as today the
Tavush direction of the state border, Nakhijevan, Makaryan in
particular, is under fire, said: "I would like to emphasize once again
that we will apply all our forces and means to any threats threatening
the territory of Armenia from any side. "
To the question, for example, if the village of Voskevaz is shelled,
the combined troops will be involved, or the war must be officially
declared, Makaryan stressed that the answer to this question will be
given by the political leadership of the country, not the military,
the decision will be made at the state level and this will be
announced.
At the same time, he stressed that today there are all the necessary
means to protect against any threat threatening Armenia.
Touching on the situation on the front line, Makaryan noted that the
situation on the contact line is controlled, there is nothing
supernatural: "The situation reigns to which we have long been
accustomed. Any attack will be given a decent answer," he concluded.
