NATO flexes muscle by US-led drill
Ukrainians pour into streets in protest to the NATO military drill in
the ex-Soviet satellite state as US forces brace for the war games.

Protestors clashed with the police as they tried to seal off a hall
hosting the launch of the Sea Breeze-2008 NATO military drill in
Ukraine’s Black Sea port of Odessa, according to TV reports.

Russia’s NTV aired videos of protestors, waving flags and chanting
"NATO stop!" as a Turkish vessel arrived into Odessa’s harbour.

Sergei Mironov, Russia’s speaker of the upper house of the parliament,
was quoted by Interfax as saying that the drill "will increase
political and military tensions in Europe as a whole."

Sea Breeze-2008, which will wrap up on July 26, also includes Armenia,
Azerbaijan, Belgium, Britain, Canada, Denmark, France, Georgia,
Germany, Greece, Latvia, Macedonia and Turkey.

Nana Intskirveli, the Georgian defense ministry spokeswoman said that
separate military drills dubbed Immediate Response-2008 are to begin in
Georgia on Tuesday with Armenian, Azerbaijani, Ukrainian and US troops
in attendance, the spokeswoman said.

The US-Georgia joint exercise will be held about 100m from the Russian

Inaugural Assembly of the Pan-Armenian Church Youth Organization
in the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin

`Search into the mystery of the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin, of our
Apostolic Holy Church and the homeland. See eternity within its domed halls
and in its soil, and remain faithful to this sacred mystery.’ – His Holiness
Karekin II

On July 10, under the presidency and with the blessings of His Holiness
Karekin II, Supreme Patriarch and Catholicos of All Armenians, the inaugural
world assembly of the Armenian Church Youth Organization convened in Mother
See of Holy Etchmiadzin.  The venue for the meetings was the newly renovated
concert hall of the Gevorkian Theological Seminary.

More than 130 young men and women, representing 35 dioceses and pastorates
of the worldwide Armenian Church, participated in this first assembly aimed
at approving the new constitution for the Pan-Armenian Church Youth
Organization (Pan-ACYO).

The delegates greeted the entrance of the Armenian Pontiff as he entered the
hall and the assembly opened with the Lord’s Prayer.  Welcoming remarks were
delivered by Karen Petrosian, Chairman of the Interim Central Council for
the Pan-ACYO.

Representatives from the dioceses of Armenia, Asia, Australia, South
America, North America and Europe, as well as the Armenian Patriarchate of
Constantinople, delivered introductory remarks expressing their love and
gratitude to the Catholicos of All Armenians and their commitment to their
efforts to unite Armenian youth from around the world with the goal of
serving our Lord Jesus Christ through the Armenian Church and enriching
their Armenian cultural and national values through their presence and
participation in the life of the homeland.

In his address to the delegates, His Eminence Archbishop Hovnan Derderian,
Primate of the Western Diocese of the Armenian Church of North America and
coordinator of the inaugural assembly, stressed that the establishment today
of the Pan-ACYO is an imperative in our contemporary lives – one that was
identified by His Holiness Karekin II years ago when he initiated this
effort.  His Eminence stated that this assembly is the culmination of years
of thought and work, and is the reply of faithful sons and daughters of the
Armenian Church to the call made by the Catholicos of All Armenians for the
youth to unite in Holy Etchmiadzin.

Abp. Derderian stated,  `The inaugural assembly of delegates of the Armenian
Church Youth Organization opens a new page in the history of our Holy
Church.  The purpose of the Pan-ACYO is to lead Armenian young people to
God, to the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin, to the homeland and to a life
filled with faith and Christian morals.  The purpose and the mission of the
youth organization is to help Armenian young people establish their life in
dialogue with God and on paths leading to our Savior.  The result of our
efforts will be the creation and prosperity of the Armenian family.  The
path will be to transform our homeland and Holy Etchmiadzin into the
starting point of our life and the Armenian family into the anchor of our
existence.’  His Eminence concluded his comments and thereafter invited the
Pontiff of All Armenians to address the delegates and offer his blessings.

His Holiness Karekin II blessed the gathered delegates and the creation of
the Pan-ACYO with these words of encouragement and challenge:  “The
Armenian Church is the birthplace of our soul’ says the author.  It is the
guarantor of Armenian identity.  It is the place where you learn to love God
and to love one another.  Our aim today is to unite our sons and daughters
under the protective dome and walls of our Church.  We wish for you to build
your lives – your blessed lives – within sight of her lofty dome ascending
to the heavens.  We want you place the Church at the axis – at the very
heart of your existence, since it is the center of our collective national
life.’

His Holiness continued, `…Our national identity, our culture, our spiritual
life are bound with Christianity and founded on the teachings, gospel and
love of our Lord Jesus Christ.  In fact, they are created by Christ.  If you
wish to be worthy citizens of your countries; if you wish to be the worthy
children of our nation, then you must live your life within the Church and
with Christ.’

His Holiness concluded his message by exhorting the delegates to, `Search
into the mystery of the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin, of our Apostolic
Holy Church and the homeland. See eternity within its domed halls and in its
soil, and remain faithful to this sacred mystery. Live with this mystery and
reinforce it within you and among your friends.  With your hard work, with
your devoted endeavors, with your vibrant service, you shall pass on the
legacy of our ancestors to your successors and the generations which follow
them.’

The Catholicos of All Armenians also expressed his appreciation and
commendation to Archbishop Hovnan Derderian for his efforts and dedication
in preparing and organizing this inaugural assembly, as well as to the
diocesan primates and pastors for contributing to the establishment of the
Pan-ACYO.

Azerbaijan extends cooperation to Pakistan in energy field

Friday, July 11, 2008

ISLAMABAD: Azerbaijan President Ilham Aliyev has extended full
cooperation to Pakistan in the field of energy, as Azerbaijan is a
major exporter of oil and gas. He expressed these views while
receiving the visiting Pakistani parliamentary delegation, headed by
Senator Mushahid Hussain, here in Baku, said a press statement
received here on Thursday.

The Azeri president thanked Pakistan for its support to Azerbaijan on
the issue of Nagorno Karabakh with Armenia. He strongly supported the
position of Pakistan on Kashmir. Ilham Aliyev urged the need for
strengthening the Organisation of Islamic Conference (OIC).

In response to an invitation from Senator Mushahid Hussain, the Azeri
president, who is also the head of the ruling New Azerbaijan Party,
agreed to send a party delegation to the International Conference of
the Asian Political Parties (ICAPP), which would be held in Islamabad
on October 24-26.

The delegation also met Azeri Prime Minister Artur Rasizade, who said
the bilateral economic ties should be strengthened and this would be
done at the forthcoming meeting of the Joint Ministerial Commission in
Baku this year.

In a meeting with Azeri Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov, Mushahid
briefed him on the foreign policy of Pakistan with reference to
Afghanistan and India. He said Pakistan was being blamed unfairly for
mistakes made by the Western forces in Afghanistan, who were looking
for a scapegoat.

He added that Pakistan was not responsible for the growth of narcotics
or bad governance, or corruption, or collapse of law and order in
Afghanistan. These problems arose when the Western forces, while
ignoring Afghanistan, decided to invade Iraq, he said.

He urged the need for giving a "healing touch" to Afghanistan and not
to alienate the Afghan population through indiscriminate use of
force. He referred to the burden of the Afghan refugees that Pakistan
was carrying on its own.

The delegation comprised Senators Wasim Sajjad, Nisar Memon, Maulana
Sami-ul-Haq, Talha Mahmood, Latif Khan Khosa, Tahir Hussain Mashhadi,
Naeem Hussain Chattha and Additional Secretary Senate Iftikhar Ullah
Babar.

Irish Famine Education And The Holocaust "Straw Man"

IRISH FAMINE EDUCATION AND THE HOLOCAUST "STRAW MAN"
James Mullin

American Chronicle
July 8 2008
CA

When I first contacted Dr. Paul Winkler, Executive Director of the New
Jersey Commission on Holocaust Education, and asked him to consider
adding the study of the Great Irish Famine to the state curriculum,
he asked me if I was claiming Genocide. I said I wanted the teachers
and students to make up their own minds. He agreed with that approach.

On Feb. 11th, 1996, a full seven months before New Jersey became the
first state to approve a curriculum on the Irish Famine, the Sunday
Telegraph of London published an article, "US Schools Say Irish Famine
was Genocide".

As expected, the Telegraph article was filled with misrepresentation,
willful errors, and sentences like: "Hard-line Irish-American
Nationalists have been increasingly vocal in their demands that the
Famine be recognized as a Genocide".

Still, it was surprising to read that, "the issue has divided the
Irish-American community, with some moderate groups concerned that
comparing the famine with the Nazi-inspired Holocaust will cause
offense to Jews." I had not made, nor had I heard of any such
comparisons; in addition, I had an excellent working relationship
with the Commission, some of whose members were death camp survivors
and former hidden children.

The Holocaust comparison theme appeared again in an October 16th,
Sunday Times article, "American Pupils Told Irish Famine was Act of
British Genocide". It said that, "British diplomats in America are
dismayed at the portrayal of the Irish famine as a genocide comparable
to the mass extermination of six million Jews by the Nazis." Who was
responsible for this "portrayal"?

Since I subscribed to the Irish People, Irish Voice, Irish Echo, (New
York) Irish Edition, (Philadelphia) and the Irish Democrat, (London)
and had not read or heard of anyone making any such comparisons,
I concluded that analogy was a propaganda device called the "straw
man". Rather than answer to credible evidence of genocidal acts during
the mass starvation, the British would argue that the "Famine" was
not a genocide because it was not Holocaust.

In October, 1996, New York Governor George Pataki signed an education
law mandating instruction on the mass starvation in Ireland. He was
attacked in a Sunday Times of London editorial entitled, "An Irish
Hell, but not a Holocaust".

Here was the propaganda masterstroke full blown. The Times editorial
said, "It is true the British government does not come out particularly
well from the tale…but to compare, as Mr. Pataki has done, its
policy with that of Hitler toward the Jews is as unhistorical as it is
offensive. (Not least to the Jews, the tragedy of whose Holocaust is
necessarily lessened by comparison with an Irish catastrophe that was
neither premeditated nor man-made.) To mistake these human errors and
shortcomings for a Nazi-style policy of deliberate racial extermination
is absurd." So absurd that the "straw man" can be easily knocked over.

Governor Pataki had not mentioned the Holocaust in his speech on
signing the bill into law, nor had his subsequent press release. The
comparison was based on the simple fact that the newly signed Act
added the words, "the mass starvation in Ireland from 1845 to 1850",
to state education law which mandated instruction on "human rights
issues, genocide, slavery and the Holocaust."

British Ambassador John Kerr then carried the misrepresentation
to the highest diplomatic levels, by attacking Governor Pataki in
a letter he released to the press. It said: "It seems to me rather
insulting to the many millions who suffered and died in concentration
camps across Europe to imply that their man-made fate was in any way
analogous to the natural disaster in Ireland a century before. The
Famine, unlike the Holocaust, was not deliberate, not premeditated,
not man-made, not genocide."

On March 10th, 1997, the Washington Times Magazine, Insight, carried a
full-page editorial, "You say Potato, They say Holocaust", illustrated
with a photograph of a potato wrapped in barbed wire. It attacked
Governor Pataki and the whole idea of Irish famine education: "The
Holocaust was Hitler´s inhuman policy to eradicate Jews in Germany
and from his Thousand-Year Reich. To equate the potato famine with
that barbarism makes Pataki a contender for the title of "The Greatest
Liar in America." The British-fabricated analogy was proving itself
stronger than the truth because it made better copy.

On Aug. 26th, 1997, the Boston Globe opposed Irish Famine education in
a staff-written editorial entitled, "Unnecessary Curriculum Bill". It
said, "As the Tolman bill is now worded, teachers might be encouraged
to treat the Irish famine on the same level of moral depravity as
the Armenian genocide and the Holocaust. That would be a misreading
of the historical record. While the British approach to the mass
starvation was often brutal, arrogant and unfeeling. No state-run
death camps disfigured the Irish countryside." Did tens of thousands
of homeless, starving people, their ruined hovels and mass graves
"disfigure the countryside"?

The argument that classroom discussion of the mass starvation in
Ireland should be discouraged because British criminality did not match
the barbarity of the Nazis during the Holocaust, is a pervasive and
virulent virus imbedded in every dose of propaganda against Famine
education. The perpetrators hope to convince everyone that because
the Famine was not the Holocaust, it could not have been genocide.

Instead of the British being forced to explain massive commodity
exports and evictions during mass starvation, Irish Famine education
activists were left to defend a "Famine is Holocaust" argument they
never made.

On September 17th, 1997 the Washington Post published "Ireland´s
Famine Wasn´t Genocide" It was written by Timothy W. Guinnane,
associate professor of economics at Yale University, and author of
The Vanishing Irish: Households, Migration, and the Rural Economy in
Post-Famine Ireland. It said, in part:

"Several states have mandated that the Great Irish Famine of 1845-1850
be taught in their high schools as an example of genocide, sometimes
in courses originally intended for the study of the Holocaust… The
reinterpretation of the famine as genocide has not been well
received by scholars who study the Irish famine. Those who view the
famine as genocide claim either that the government engineered the
crisis or that its reaction to the blight promoted as many deaths
as possible. …But does the government´s inadequate response to
the famine constitute genocide? The contrast with the Holocaust is
instructive. The Nazis devoted considerable resources to finding and
murdering Jews. The regime´s stated intention was the elimination
of the Jewish people. Nothing like this can be claimed against the
British government during the Irish famine. The British government´s
indifference to the famine helped cause thousands of needless deaths,
but it was indifference nonetheless, and not an active effort at
systematic murder… To call the famine genocide cheapens the memories
of both the famine´s victims and the victims of real genocides."

While the Holocaust is the best documented, most systematic, ruthless
and brutal genocide of the 20th century, it is not the definition of
genocide. Since the United States and Britain are parties to the 1948
Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide,
the definition that applies is contained in Article II: ´In the
present Convention, genocide means any of the following acts committed
with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical,
racial or religious group, as such: (a) Killing members of the group;
(b) Causing serious bodily or mental harm to members of the group;
(c) Deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life calculated
to bring about its phyisica1 destruction in whole or in part; (d)
Imposing measures intended to prevent births within the group; (e)
Forcibly transferring children of the group to another group.´

Francis A. Boyle, Professor of International Law at the University
of Illinois, has experience arguing matters of genocide before the
International Court of Justice in The Hague. He wrote to the New Jersey
Commission on Holocaust Education on May 2, 1996, saying, in part:

"Clearly, during the years 1845 to 1850, the British government
pursued a policy of mass starvation in Ireland with intent to destroy
in substantial part the national, ethnical, and racial group commonly
known as the Irish People, as such. In addition, this British policy
of mass starvation in Ireland clearly caused serious bodily and
mental harm to members of the Irish People within the meaning of
Genocide Convention Article II (b). Furthermore, this British policy
of mass starvation in Ireland deliberately inflicted on the Irish
People conditions of life calculated to bring about their physical
destruction in substantial part within the meaning of Article 11(c) of
the 1948 Genocide Convention. Therefore, during the years 1845 to 1850
the British government knowingly pursued a policy of mass starvation
in Ireland that constituted acts of genocide against the Irish People."

In December, 1848 (one hundred years before the 1948 Genocide
Convention was signed) Cholera began to spread through many of
the overcrowded workhouses, pauper hospitals, and crammed jails
in Ireland. On April 26th, 1849, the Earl of Clarendon, the Lord
Lieutenant of Ireland, wrote to Prime Minister Russell: "…it is
enough to drive one mad, day after day, to read the appeals that
are made and meet them all with a negative…At Westport, and other
places in Mayo, they have not a shilling to make preparations for the
cholera, but no assistance can be given, and there is no credit for
anything, as all our contractors are ruined. Surely this is a state
of things to justify you asking the House of Commons for an advance,
for I don’t think there is another legislature in Europe that would
disregard such suffering as now exists in the west of Ireland, or
coldly persist in a policy of extermination." No advance was granted.

Baalbek Festival Returns From A Two-Year Hiatus

BAALBEK FESTIVAL RETURNS FROM A TWO-YEAR HIATUS
Esther Krenz Muller

Daily Star
July 8 2008
Lebanon

Lebanon’s esteemed summer extravaganza returns with a six-concert
program, starting in Beirut

BEIRUT: After a two-year hiatus due to political unrest, aerial
bombardment and the like, the Baalbek International Festival returns
this year with a program of six weekly, one-off performances from July
27 to August 23. As usual, the event will offer a variety of genres,
from pop and "World Music" to opera and jazz to oriental and Western
classical music.

With big names like pop sensation Mika, Mexican diva Astrid Hadad,
opera singer Hasmik Papian, Brazilian jazz artist Tania Maria, oriental
songstress Warda al-Jazayria, and Lebanese classical pianist Abdel
Rahman al-Bacha, Baalbek’s organizers expect to draw in more than
20,000 festival-goers this season.

The Baalbek Festival has a venerable history reinforced by its choice
of venue. The ruins of Baalbek that host the concerts are the site
of the Hellenistic-Roman city of Heliopolis – Baalbek taking its name
from the Canaanite sun god, Baal.

Lebanese President Camille Chamoun founded the Baalbek Festival in
1956. Since then, the event has hosted a wide range of international,
regional and Lebanese talent, from jazz icon Miles Davis and flamenco
innovator Paco De Lucia to Lebanon’s Caracalla Dance Theater. It has
thus played a crucial role in promoting and celebrating trans-cultural
performing arts in Lebanon and the region.

Pop sensation Mika will kick off this year’s festivities with a concert
on Sunday, July 27. Organizers have decided to break with tradition
this year, teaming up with their erstwhile rivals at the Beiteddine
Festival and events organizer 2U2C to host the opening concert at
Beirut’s Martyrs Square. Organizers say they’re moving their opening
night to Beirut to accommodate the large number of expected fans,
though obviously the venue (the epicenter of the 2005 "Independence
Uprising") reverberates on other pop-cultural levels as well.

A self-taught piano virtuoso with a four-octave vocal range, Mika, 23,
is often compared with Robbie Williams, Scissor Sisters and Queen’s
late vocalist, Freddy Mercury. Lebanese-born but nowadays living and
working in London the singer, songwriter and producer’s debut album
"Life in Cartoon Motion," set records in the US and Europe.

"My music is all about transitions," Mika explains. "Transitions
are important, because everything gets destabilized, and that makes
you question and re-evaluate everything. For songwriting, that’s an
endless source of inspiration."

In addition to the Martyrs Square show, Baalbek will this year feature
five performances at the Temple of Bacchus . Complementing these shows,
the ancient Roman Acropolis – estimated to have been completed near
2,000 years ago – provides the perfect milieu for Lebanese cultural
nights.

Mexico’s flamboyant Astrid Hadad is an emblematic cabaret
performer. Known as a "traveling museum of popular culture," Hadad will
enthrall audiences when she struts her stuff on August 2. The lure of
her enigmatic voice and wild music, which range from rock, rumba and
cumbia, to pure Mexican ranchero, have captivated audiences worldwide.

Her unique style is a blend of eccentric theater, Mexican imagery,
plastic and popular art. With bawdy mockery, she pokes fun at the
traditions, stereotypes, symbols, and political fundamentalism of
Mexican and Latin culture. The costumes and settings are so surreal
and outlandish, critics have described her performance "as the most
provocative stage act since the Weimar Republic was in bloom."

On August 9, internationally acclaimed Armenian soprano Hasmik Papian
will perform a mixed programmed of ranging from the German baroque to
Italian romantic arias, accompanied by pianist Avo Kouyoumdjian. Papian
has graced such prestigious operatic stages as New York’s Metropolitan
Opera House, Paris’ National Opera, La Scala in Milan, and the Vienna
State Opera.

Her repertoire ranges from Bellini’s Norma, Mozart’s Donna Anna,
Rossini’s Mathilde, Halevy’s Rachel and Bizet’s Micaela, to
Puccini’s Mimi, Tosca, Madame Butterfly, Boito’s Margareta/Elena,
and Tchaikovsky’s Lisa.

Brazil’s Tania Maria Quartet will perform on August 16. Renowned
for her intoxicating vocals and keyboard artistry, singer, pianist,
and composer Tania Maria, drives this funky, grooving foursome. Her
music is an eclectic fusion of Afro Latin pop; brimming with funk
and native Brazilian beats like Choro and Samba.

Maria’s deep and sultry voice, spontaneity, daring improvisations,
and twisting melodies have made her one of the most widely admired
jazz musicians worldwide. Her latest album "Intimidade" ("Intimacy"),
is her 26th release.

"There is nothing sexual about it," Tania says of the album’s
title track. "It’s just sensual! All artists have a very intimate
relationship with their instruments; for musicians, intimacy is the
moment of composition when you question yourself and are filled with
wonderment. Intimidade also means opening yourself up to others and
conveying your passion."

After her immense popularity and success in Baalbek at the 2005
festival, Arab diva Warda al-Jazayria will be back at the Temple of
Bacchus to woo listeners on August 21. She will be accompanied by
the Khaled Fouad Orchestra.

The Algerian War of Independence saw Warda, otherwise known as the
"Algerian Rose," seek refuge in Beirut in 1958. She achieved widespread
critical acclaim when she moved to Cairo, becoming one of the most
famous and popular singers of the Arab world.

Warda has performed at venues like London’s Royal Albert Hall,
New York’s Madison Square Garden, Las Vegas’ MGM Grand, and Paris’
Palais des Congres, and has played several film, television and
theatrical roles.

The festival will end with a performance by Lebanese pianist Abdel
Rahman al-Bacha on August 23. Bacha has distinguished himself as one
of the Middle East’s leading classical pianists.

His program will include: Bach’s "Prelude and Fugue" in C-Sharp
Minor, Beethoven’s "Sonata No. 14," Chopin’s "Impromptu No. 3" in G
Flat-Major op. 51 and "Sonata No. 2" in B-Flat Minor ("Funeral March"),
Ravel’s "Pavane Jeux d’eau," T. Bacha’s "Oriental Rondo Nostalgia,"
and Albeniz’s "El Albaicin," "Evocacion," and "Triana."

The Baalbek Festival runs from 27 July until 23 August. Tickets and
information about busing back and forth to shows are available at
Virgin Megastore and Baalbek itself (08 370 520; 03 891 695). For more

Fortified Armenian monasteries in Iran were added to the new sites
inscribed on UNESCO’s World Heritage List on 6 July.

The Armenian Monastic Ensembles in Iran, in the north-east of the
country, consists of three monastic ensembles of the Armenian Christian
faith: St Thaddeus and St Stepanos and the Chapel of Dzordzor. These
edifices – the oldest of which, St Thaddeus, dates back to the 7th
century – are examples of outstanding universal value of the Armenian
architectural and decorative traditions. Furthermore, as places of
pilgrimage, the monastic ensembles are living witnesses of Armenian
religious traditions through the centuries.

This is the fourth cultural site to be added onto UNESCO’s World

They bear testimony to very important interchanges with the
other regional cultures, in particular the Byzantine, Orthodox and

Armenian cultural space, the monasteries constituted a major centre
for the dissemination of that culture into Azerbayjan and Persia. They
are the last regional remains of this culture that are still in a
satisfactory state of integrity and authenticity. Furthermore, as

Armenian Company Plays in Youth and Children International Festival

ARMENIAN COMPANY OF ACTORS PLAYS BRILLIANTLY IN FANTASTIC YOUTH AND
CHILDREN’S INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL

YEREVAN, JULY 4, NOYAN TAPAN. The Fantastic Youth and Children’s
International Theatrical Festival held on June 19-22 in the city of
Rudolstadt, Germany, started with the tale-performance "Ofelia Shadows
Theater" of Armenian Aestheticism National Center’s Small Theater.

As performance producer Vahan Badalian said at the July 3 press
conference, 9 out of 40 presented performances had been selected for
the festival, including the Armenian one. Besides Armenia, companies of
actors from Poland, Russia, Croatia also took part in the festival.

For the purpose of smoothing over the language problem the Armenian
performance’s dialogues were in Armenian and narrative parts in German.
According to V. Badalian, they intend to play the performance in the
same way in English, French, and Russian.

"German press has repeatedly touched upon our performance mentioning
that the Armenian company of actors played brilliantly in the
festival," V. Badalian said. Though there were no prizes in the
festival, the advantage of the Armenian performance was noticed by both
the participants and the spectators, as a result of which the Small
Theater’s actors were also invited to Ireland and Macedonia.

"Childrens’ theaters’ performances are often perceived not seriously in
society as an individual great event. However, we can state that though
the actors are aged 10-15, they play their parts very professionally
and with great devotion receiving a warm welcome by society," he added.
