Valley Political Enthusiasts Make A Mark At Washington, D.C. Tea Party

WASHINGTON, D.C., Sept. 12 – As a crowd of Americans placed their hands
over their hearts while singing "God Bless America," Valley resident
Suzanne Curran stood in awe to be a part of history in the making.

"I can’t even begin to tell you about it without getting choked up,"
Curran said. "That moment will stay with me forever."

The Tea Party movement began on April 15 with thousands of Americans
protesting government spending across the U.S. From small towns to
large cities, people spoke out against President Obama’s healthcare
plan among other issues.

The FreedomWorks Foundation out of Washington, D.C., was formed "to
educate Americans about free-market economics and limited government,"
according to its Web site (). The organization planned
a Tea Party to take place in the capital on Saturday, Sept. 12,
and six buses of Valley residents traveled to be a part of the
historical moment.

Estimates have been made that the crowd totaled 1.5 to 2 million
people that day and at least 252 were from Shenandoah County.

"I’ve never been so thrilled to be a part of history," said Sue Hughes,
president of the Shenandoah County Republican Women. "It was friendly,
uplifting and patriotic. I saw no ugliness."

Beginning with a few people planning to attend, word of mouth
reached others and buses were rented to transport individuals to the
protest. According to Curran, who helped make travel plans, it began
with two buses and ended with six.

"We could’ve filled at least two or three more buses, but all the
bus companies were running out," Curran said. "Many people ended up
riding the metro into D.C."

The march on Saturday began around 10 a.m. at 13th and Constitution
Street. Protesters held up signs saying such things as "Can you hear
us now" and "I was tired of yelling at my TV so I came here."

Once the crowd r rs of the FreedomWorks Foundation, citizens and
various officials. Chanting, singing, and waving signs continued.

Hughes took along for the ride the foreign exchange student, Elen
Sahradyan of Armenia, that is living with her and her husband.

"She was really excited and enjoyed it for the most part,"
said Hughes. "I figured, what a better way to show her how the
U.S. government works."

When speaking with Curran on Monday morning, she said she was
"exhilarated, inspired and hadn’t come down yet."

"Everyone there was so passionate about their country. We want our
country back," she said.

According to Hughes, the crowd began to thin around 3 p.m. and most
people were leaving by 4 p.m. The Shenandoah Valley crowd was gathered
and heading home by 5 p.m. that evening.

"I think they heard us. It can’t help but do good," said the Republican
women president. "I don’t see how the lawmakers could ignore this."

"To Be Or Not To Be"

"TO BE OR NOT TO BE"

armen-aivazian
September 23, 2009

"The two-sided Protocols on Armenian-Turkish relations put forth
numerous preconditions," says Armen Aivazian, Director of "Ararat"
Center for Strategic Research.

Regarding Republican Party’s statement that the Protocols set no
preconditions and do not refer to the Karabakh conflict, Mr. Aivazian
said: "When in 1915 they displaced and drove people away to "safer
places," did they warn against the pending massacre? Surely, they did
not. The same is true with the Protocols which speak of the Artsakh
problem and the Kars Treaty omitting the names.

Armen Aivazian says he has written about Armenia’s wrong policy
towards Turkey for ten years.

"During the so-called "diplomatic relations" during the football
matches I made speeches signaling to the destructive effect of the
negotiation process. After the road-map was determined this April I
called the document "the first act of capitulation" to be followed by
new ones. Surely enough, the Protocols were signed in a few months by
which Turkey attempts to illegally formulate Armenia’s colonization."

Turkey aims to annihilate Armenians – a fact ignored by Armenian
authorities. We face a dilemma today. To be or not to be – this is
the question."

Russia Attempts To Discredit Turkey

RUSSIA ATTEMPTS TO DISCREDIT TURKEY

Messenger
Sept 23 2009
Georgia

Since the August 2008 invasion of Georgia the Russian media, which is
almost entirely State controlled, has been campaigning to discredit
Turkey in the eyes of Georgians. By doing this Russia is trying to
weaken the Turkish presence in the South Caucasus and at the same
time strengthen its own position.

During the first decade of the post-Soviet era in the South Caucasus
very stable, solid and promising connections were made between Turkey,
Georgia and Azerbaijan. These have yielded some energy projects
of global significance: the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan oil pipeline,
the Baku-Tbilisi-Erzerum natural gas pipeline. Construction of the
Akhalkalaki (Georgia) to Kars (Turkey) railway is currently on the
agenda, and the next step will be implementing the NABUCCO project
in order to provide an alternative supply of natural gas to Europe
which bypasses Russia.

However it is clear that all these projects, which have so far being
successful, are creating irritation and jealousy in Moscow and are
hindering the creation of the Russian "energy empire". Under this
doctrine the Kremlin will regain its influence over the post-Soviet
space and Europe will become greatly dependent on energy supplied to
it by Russia. The successful implementation of the South Caucasus
projects to date has been mainly based on good, friendly, and
neighbourly relations between Georgia and Turkey, which Russia does
not want to see. When Russia’s first modern aggression in the 90s
of the last century blocked Georgia’s original land connection with
Europe, as Moscow intended, Turkey became the only land connection
to Europe available to Georgia. If during the Soviet period Turkey
was seen by Georgia as a continual threat things have now changed
completely. Turkey has become the closest friend of Georgia while
Russia has distanced itself and eventually become the number one
enemy of Georgia.

The Russian occupation of Georgia’s territories has created the
situation which prevents constructive cooperation between Tbilisi
and Moscow. Meanwhile the Kremlin continues to foment wicked plans
to destroy Georgia’s statehood. The Kremlin wants to encourage
neighbouring States such as Armenia or others to make territorial
claims against Georgia and the Russian media is currently speculating
about Turkey recognising Abkhazia as an independent state in return
for Russia doing the same in Northern Cyprus. The Russian media
is also speculating that Turkish might make a claim for Adjara and
Armenia might replace Georgia as a transit country, in particular
as a stakeholder in NABUCCO. We consider these are just desperate
attempts by Russian imperialists to create problems between Ankara
and Tbilisi, but what else might follow? How difficult is it for
someone to try and gain personal profit by acting on these reports,
and creating problems for the sake of it to do so?

Of course the Georgian public and politicians realise that such
propaganda is purely designed to discredit Turkey in Georgia, as
it bears little relation to reality. They will not rise to Russian
provocations, nor allow any external actor to disrupt the friendly
relations between Georgia and Turkey and other countries as well.

In Short Time Armenia Launches 2 E-Payment Systems

IN SHORT TIME ARMENIA LAUNCHES 2 E-PAYMENT SYSTEMS

HULIQ
Sept 16 2009
SC

E-commerce is a novelty in Armenia but it is gradually gaining
momentum. In the past two years Armeia has launched two e-payment
systems both oriented to Armenian Dram.

Emerging at the same time with credit cards, e-commerce experienced
a real boom due to wider internet surfing opportunities when any man
could access www from his home PC. Merely an e-commercial at first,
e-commerce began quickly evolving from a web-server used by a company
to feature its goods and services to the first order and consequently
the first internet-shop where customers paid by credit cards only. It
turned out later that credit cards are not universal – in some spheres
a credit card deal often cost more than the buy. Besides the first
payment systems were far from secure. This urged experts to develop
most various payment schemes. E-commerce is a novelty in Armenia but
it is gradually gaining momentum. In the past two years Armeia has
launched two e-payment systems both oriented to Armenian Dram.

One of them – DramCash () is based on PayCash,
admittedly the most safe and reliable payment technology of these days,
says Edward Martirossyan, technical director of Eldina, the DramCash
operating company. Launched quite recently the system allows e-payment
in drams. This is a protected network of client software known as
internet wallet. The user can download an internet wallet on his
PC or flash card free of charge from the operator site. As soon as
the software is there the system’s processing center gives the user
an individual registration account. The whole registration takes
no more than five minutes. PayCash is also applied by YandexMoney
(Russia), Cyphermint (USA), IntenetMoney (Ukraine). DramCash will
allow Armenia-based users to do shopping in internet stores, to pay
for mobile phone, internet, cable TV services in drams. The company
also provides for bill payment schemes. Martirossyan says that the
the system testing began Oct 27 2003. Since then they have attained a
universal format of cooperation with the multi-currency Yandex-Money
portals this allowing Armenian buyers to pay for Russian goods and
services in e-drams. Martirossyan says that e-dram has been made
"convertible" into any other currency of PayCash. Currently disucssed
is the technical aspect of e-dram conversion into Web-Money, Egold,
EPort.

Besides Eldina has concluded a unique contract with GoldFishka, the
biggest online casino in Russia. Today there are many cyber casinos
accepting AMD but only GoldFishka pays winnings in dram. Very shortly
the company is starting to sell 2,000-, 5,000-, 10,000- and 50,000
AMD scratch-cards. Presently it is expecting the e-connection of a
number of Armenian shops.

EDram is a quite different system, says Gevorg Pogossyan, director of
NATC llc, EDram designer company. It is a unique complex of the best
features of its Western and Russian analogues. "One can use it from
any computer having internet, even in internet-cafes, while most of
its counterparts require downloading special terminals." EDram money
is absolutely virtual and noncash. The customer buys a prepaid EDram
card certifying his right to do shopping on the internet for a definite
sum. "Today we have four types of EDram cards: 5,000, 10,000, 20,000
and 50,000 AMD." Pogossyan says that the system spans a very broad
range of services. One can use it to pay one’s bills – gas, water
and electricity. Soon one will be able to use them in restaurants,
CD shops and other public facilities. NATC is presently negotiating
with the ArmenTel telecom company for the opportunity to pay online
for intracity and mobile calls. "We have a cyber exchange office on
our site where one will be able to convert his AMD into any cuber
currency (e-gold, Yandex.Money)," says Pogossyan. Besides the company
is considering cooperation with active online traders. They will
have to pay only a small fixed sum. "Armenian legislation prohibits
commercial companies to make gratis deals so we have decided to charge
symbolic 5 AMD per deal," says Pogossyan.

Comment: You have certainly noted that the above two systems have much
in common: both can convert AMD on-line, both are on similar terms
with on-line buyers and sellers. But there is also one substantial
difference: it is between DramCash "internet-wallets" and NATC
one-buy cards. A DramCash user will need an own PC or a flash card
with "wallet" software, while EDram allows its user to do shopping
from any computer – quite convenient for most Armenians whose only
www access is internet-cafe.

Thus DramCash will most probably interest home and office PC
owners. But this is not solely a matter of technical access but rather
of mentality. Experts note that Armenian e-buyers are wavering and
floundering even when the online store is round the corner. This
notwithstanding more and more e-traders from Yandex.Money are trying
to tempt Armenian internet-users with "shopping" opportunities in
Russia. They might hope that Armenian e-consumers will ultimately
"abandon" their mentality. But there is also a group of Russian e-shop
frequenters who are most probably the target of Yandex.Money. Be as it
may any direction will have a positive impact on the Armenian IT. As
for the further developments they will come with the need to revise
one or another direction.

One interesting fact – today e-commerce is considered worldwide to be
a very lucrative business – everyone can use it from everywhere. They
have even done online shopping from space! Dec 11 2001 the Moskovsky
Komsomolets informed of Russian cosmonauts Vladimir Dezhurov and
Mikhail Turin doing shopping right from their spacecraft. They used
VISA cards to transfer virtual money to an e-shop to buy X-mas gifts
and flowers for their friends and relatives. Obviously space shopping
is not coming soon – but down here on earth let’s hope that in Armenia
e-commerce will develop earlier.

Dangerous Intrigues In Istanbul

DANGEROUS INTRIGUES IN ISTANBUL
Eric Margolis.Veteran journalist and Author

s/dangerous-intrigues-in-is_b_287554.html
Huffingt on Post
Sept 15 2009

The name "Ergenekon" may not be familiar to non-Turks, but this murky
political affaire has riveted Turkey’s 70 million people.

Thirty-three members of a neo-fascist group called Ergenekon have been
on trial, accused of murder, terrorism, and trying to overthrow the
elected government. The trial was temporarily suspended after the
courthouse was flooded out during torrential rains that inundated
Istanbul last week, leaving 31 dead.

This fascinating trial has been exposing the workings of the `deep
state,’ a powerful cabal of retired and active military officers,
security forces, gangsters, government officials, judges, and business
oligarchs that has long been the real power in this complex nation.

Turkey’s military vigorously denies any links to the Ergenekon.

The `deep state’ advocates extreme Turkish nationalism and revived
Pan-Turkism, or Turanism, the unification of all Turkic peoples from
Turkey to the Great Wall of China.

Its extreme right-wing members are bitterly anti-Islamic, and violently
oppose any admission of guilt for the mass killing during World War
I of many of the Ottoman Empire’s Armenians. Most Turks insist the
killings occurred in the chaos of war and insurrection. Armenians
call it the 20th century’s first genocide.

Turkey’s hard right also opposes improving relations with neighbors
Armenia and Greece, or making any more concessions to Turkey’s sizable
Kurdish minority.

Ergenekon’s plotters stand accused of plans to assassinate officials
of PM Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s ruling Justice and Development Part(AKP),
a democratic, modernizing movement advocating Islamic principles of
fairer wealth distribution and social welfare.

While AKP is a moderate, centrist party, Turkey’s secularists, without
any serious evidence, claim it is the spearhead of a radical Islamic
movement. The real issue is as much about the secularist’s right to
protect their long-enjoyed economic and social privileges as it is
about religion.

The plotters reportedly hired hit men to kill leading liberal
intellectuals, including acclaimed writer, Orhan Pamuk, and may
have murdered a prominent Armenian-Turkish journalist and three
Christians. They also oppose Turkey’s entry into the EU as a threat to
`Turkishness.’

What makes this case particularly interesting is that Ergenekon may
well be linked to Gladio, a secret, far right underground group created
in the 1950s by the US and NATO during the Cold War as a `stay behind’
guerrillas to resist Soviet invasion or Communist takeovers. Gladio
had a network of agents and caches of arms across Europe with secret
links to NATO intelligence services.

Gladio staged numerous bombing attacks and assassinations during
the 1970s and ’80s in a effort to promote far right coups in Italy,
Belgium, and Turkey, where it remains active.

A cell was even recently uncovered in Switzerland.

In Italy, Gladio members played a key role in the P2 Masonic Lodge’s
plot to overthrow the government. The Vatican’s Banco Ambrosiano,
its head, Roberto Calvi, and Italian military intelligence, were also
involved this intrigue.

The Ergenekon plot is one facet of the intense struggle between
Erdogan’s Islamist-lite reformists and Turkey’s 510,000-man
armed forces which sees itself as defender of the anti-religious,
westernized secular state created in the 1930’s by Ataturk, founder
of modern Turkey.

Turkey’s generals are closely allied to the deeply entrenched
secularist oligarchy of business barons, judges, university rectors,
media groups, and the security services that has made Ataturk’s memory
and anti-religious values into a state philosophy.

Turkey’s right-wing generals have overthrown three governments and
ousted a fourth. The Turkish military establishment is traditionally
close to the US and Israel, with whom it’s had extensive military,
arms and intelligence dealings.

Until PM Erdogan’s election, the military was Turkey’s real government
behind a thin facade of squabbling elected politicians, a fact lost
on western observers who used to urge Turkey’s "democratic" political
model on the Muslim world.

An intensifying struggle is under way between the two camps. On
the surface, it’s "secularism versus Islamic government." But
that’s just shorthand for the fierce rivalry between the
military-industrial-security complex and Erdogan’s supporters, many
of whom are recent immigrants to the big cities from rural areas,
where Islam remains vital in spite of eight decades of government
efforts to stamp it out or tightly control it.

Right-wing forces recently got allies in the Appeals Court to lay
spurious corruption charges against Turkey’s respected President,
Abdullah Gul. The Erdogan government struck back by levying a US $2.5
billion tax fine on the powerful Dogan media conglomerate that has
been a fierce critic and enemy of the prime minister. Both foolish
acts injure Turkey’s image as a modern democracy.

Erdogan has been Turkey’s best, most popular prime minister. He has
enacted important political, social, legal and economic reforms,
and has drawn Turks closer to Europe’s laws and values. He stabilized
Turkey’s formerly wild finances and brought a spirit of real democracy
to Turkey. The EU keeps warning Turkey’s growling generals to keep
out of politics.

After 50 years of trying, Turkey still can’t get into the European
Union. Europe clearly wants an obedient Turkey to protect its eastern
flank and fend off more troublesome Muslims, but not an equal partner
and certainly not a new member, even though Turkey is as qualified
for the EU as Bulgaria or Romania.

Germany’s Chancellor Angela Merkel and France’s Nicholas Sarkozy,
both leaders of Europe’s anti-Muslim right, keep saying no to the
Turks. The EU wants no more farmers – and productive, lower cost ones
at that – and no more Muslims.
