A Kars shepherd has been attracting attention for his small
sculptures, and hopes to build a business selling them.

Metin DoÄ?rukartal is a native of Kars, in northeastern Turkey, and
will be exhibiting his small sculptures, depicting various national
heritage sites, at the Ani ruins on the Turkish-Armenian border, where
he hopes to sell them to tourists. DoÄ?rukartal attracted the attention
of Naif AlibeyoÄ?lu, the area’s municipality manager, while he was
feeding his sheep near the village of Merkez Namurlu. He started
working at the Namık Kemal Culture house in 2005, and has built
sculptures of the Kars Tower, Kars’ stone bridge, Evliya Mosque, the
Church of the Twelve Apostles, Kümbet Mosque, and the tomb of Ebu-l
Hasan Harakani Hazretleri. He would like to earn money with this
talent.

DoÄ?rukartal is married and has three children. He graduated from
primary school. He creates his sculptures from stones he finds while
tending his sheep. He says he has no education as a artist. `Many
tourists visit the Ani Ruins during the summer. I will exhibit my
sculptures and sell them. Whenever I see a stone I take it and try to
reshape it. All my life I have worked with stones. I love my
profession,’ he said.

Several rally goers injured by balloons in Armenia

More than a 100 people are injured after a cluster of gas balloons
exploded during a political rally in Armenia yesterday.

At least 144 people were injured during a political rally held
yesterday in the Armenian capital Yerevan after a cluster of gas
balloons exploded.

The explosions have been blamed on a cigarette lit close to the balloons.

The government campaign event, being held ahead of parliamentary
polls, resulted in over 100 people being taken to hospital for medical
treatment of burns. None of the injuries were thought to be
life-threatening.

Most of the injuries appeared to be fairly light and despite the
explosion, President Serge Sarkisian still went on to address the
people in attendance.

Shushan Hananyan, a health ministry spokesperson said that a number of
people were injured in the panic following the blast as people tried
to escape the flames.

Parliamentary elections in Armenia are to be held tomorrow.

Armenia: Explosions at rally injure over 140 (VIDEO)

Explosions at a rally in Armenia, caused by hundreds of small balloons
igniting, injured over 140 people.

More than 140 people were injured at a political rally in the central
square of Armenia’s capital on Friday when clusters of balloons
exploded, according to the Associated Press.

According to emergency officials, 104 people had to be hospitalized
for burns after the explosion in Yerevan.

The explosion was caused by a smoker who lit a cigarette near the
balloons, said the AP.

The crowds had gathered for a government campaign event ahead of
parliamentary polls, according to the BBC.

Health ministry spokesperson Shushan Hananyan said that some of the
injured were hurt during the chaos that ensued after the blasts.

“I heard an explosion and saw flames rising high,” a 30-year-old woman
told Reuters. “People rushed away from the square, and I saw a man
with a burnt face and a girl whose back was on fire.”

The BBC said that despite the incident, President Serge Sarkisian did
address the rally.

The Republican Party and its ally Prosperous Armenia are likely to win
60 percent of the votes in Sunday’s election, according to opinion
polls cited by Reuters.

Armenia’s Foreign Ministry slams Azeri leader’s speech at UN SC

TERT.AM
19:34 – 05.05.12

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has voiced criticism over Azerbaijani
President Ilham Aliyev’s recent speech at the United Nations Security
Council.

In a statement it says that the Azeri leader’s words were based on
lies, distortions and groundless speculations.

`Instead of reaffirming his country’s commitment to the peaceful
settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh issue, the President of Azerbaijan
abuses the authoritative tribune of the UN Security Council in order
to repeat the overused theses of anti-Armenian propaganda of
Azerbaijan, just only forgetting to recall the Azerbaijani
leadership’s famous racist thesis that Azerbaijan’s `main enemies are
Armenians worldwide,’ reads the statement.

The Ministry says that the Azerbaijani leadership’s continuous threats
to regional peace and security and its belligerent statements
provoking hostility are unbecoming of a UN member state and discredit
the Security Council.

Government, Opposition Using Stones And Knives As Campaign Tools In

GOVERNMENT, OPPOSITION USING STONES AND KNIVES AS CAMPAIGN TOOLS IN LERNAPAT
Adrine Torosyan

hetq.am
16:03, May 4, 2012

It appears that in the parliamentary race in Election District 29
(Lori Marz), stones and knives are being used by candidates and their
supporters rather than public debate.

Vahagn Martirosyan, the candidate of the opposition Armenian
National Congress, has issued a statement claiming that Lernapat
Mayor Vano Yeghiazaryan, a member of the ruling Republican Party,
and his supporters have prevented candidates from other parties from
meeting with residents.

He points to an incident that took place on April 30 involving
independent candidate Armen Martirosyan.

Vahagn Martirosyan also say that a dispute broke out in the village
on May 1 between the two camps, resulting in resident Norik Tamaryan
being knifed by the mayor’s son.

On May 2, the mayor’s friends are also said to have assaulted and
beaten Gevorg Melkonyan, the proxy of independent MP candidate Armen
Martirosyan.

ANC candidate Martirosyan says these incidents are a gross violation
of the electoral laws and has called for the guilty to be punished
to the full extent of the law.

It seems that there was a dispute about a path that had been closed
by the mayor’s father leading to some pasture.

Norik Tamaryan says that he called on residents not to give in to the
action of Albert, the mayor’s father. This defiance allegedly irked
the old man who called on his grandsons to confront Tamaryan.

Tamaryan claims that the mayor’s two sons and their friends got into
a dispute with him and that one struck him on the chin with a knife.

Tamaryan says that they later struck him with rocks. He later got into
his car and drove away to go home. The man says he heard a ruckus
from down below and went to investigate after being joined by his
proxy Gevorg Melkonyan.

They got drawn into a fight, says Tamaryan, in which Melkonyan was
also injured.

Tamaryan says the mayor used the pasture access dispute as an excuse
to show everybody who is boss in the community.

“Certain community leaders use their position to create an atmosphere
of terror in their villages so that they can assure a majority of votes
for their bosses. Lernapat is no exception,” said Vahagn Martirosyan.

Lernapat Mayor Yeghiazaryan says that Tamaryan is lying about the
knife attack. The mayor says it was actually Tamaryan and Melkonyan
who assaulted his father and son with rocks.

Gougarq District Police Chief Erik Sharmazanov says that Norik
Tamaryan was indeed cut with a sharp object and that a forensics test
is being conducted.

The police official says that one person has been questioned in
the matter.

Sharmazanov admits that other inter-communal disputes have broken
out after the attack on Tamaryan, resulting in the mayor’s father
receiving a head injury.

Police are investigating the entire series of events.
