Sugar prices rise after parliamentary polls in Armenia- newspaper

YEREVAN, May 11. /ARKA/. Sugar prices in Armenia rose by 10 drams
several days after the May 6 parliamentary elections, Haykakan
Zhamanak (Armenian Time) newspaper reports referring to its own
analysis of retail market.

Currently, 1 kg of sugar can be bought by average 430-440 drams in stores.

“In average 275 tons of sugar is sold in Armenia daily. And this means
that rising prices by 10 drams the only sugar importer and producer
Samvel Aleksanyan earns 2 million 750 thousand drams in additional
income daily or over 82 million drams monthly,” the newspaper reports.

The source adds that it is unknown within how many month he “will be
able to recover his expenses made during election campaign.”

“Also, Alex Grig company, which is allegedly owned by Aleksanyan’s
wife, paid 15% less taxes in the fist quarter of this year from a year
earlier,” the newspaper says.

According to information spread by mass media, Samvel Aleksanyan, who
entered the parliament of the fifth convocation from the electoral
district No.7, owns Alex Grig and Lusastgh Sugar companies which are the
principal sugar importers and producers in Armenia.

Haykakan Zhamanak’s editor-in-chief, a member of oppositional Armenian
National Congress, Nikol Pashinyan was the main opponent of Aleksanyan
at the parliamentary election. ($1-393.07 drams). -0-

Baku systematically destroys Azerbaijan’s indigenous population

Baku systematically destroys Azerbaijan’s indigenous population

May 12, 2012 – 15:10 AMT

PanARMENIAN.Net – On May 8-10, Nagorno Karabakh hosted an extended
meeting of organizing committee of international conference on
`Indigenous people of the Caucasus-Caspian Region.

Apart from Armenian representatives, the committee comprises science
workers and public figures from Azerbaijan, Georgia, Iran, Turkey,
European countries, the U.S. and Russia.

As Talysh delegation member Mortza Kasempuv told PanARMENIAN.Net the
conference aims to call international community’s attention to the
rights of indigenous people residing in the Caspian region,
particularly in Azerbaijan.

`Iran is our homeland, where all the rights of indigenous people are
exercised. Official Baku’s policy aims to wipe all national minorities
of Azerbaijan, Talysh, Lezgians, Avars and Udis off the face of the
country. We were evicted from our historical lands: Lankaran, Astara,
Masallı, Lerik and Goranboy. Azerbaijan must recognize all the nations
residing in its territory to ensure peace,’ Kasempuv said.

`There are no Talysh schools in Azerbaijan, language and culture are
forbidden, repression is exerted against Talysh activists,’ he said.

The Talysh-Mughan Autonomous Republic was a short-lived
self-proclaimed autonomous republic in Azerbaijan that lasted from
June to August 1993.

Talysh prople speak the Talysh language, one of the Northwestern
Iranian languages. It is spoken in the northern regions of the Iranian
provinces of Gilan and Ardabil and the southern parts of the Republic
of Azerbaijan.

The Honourable John Ajaka formally acknowledged the historical reality
of the Armenian Genocide in a speech on the floor of the NSW
parliament this week and declared that Armenians had been forced out
of Western Armenia, the Armenian National Committee of Australia
reports.

Parliamentary Secretary for Transport and Roads, Ajaka rose in the
Legislative Council to place on public record his condemnation of the
wholesale massacre and permanent displacement of Armenians from their
historical homeland.

“It is recognized that the tragedy began when 250 Armenian leaders and
intellectuals were arrested, deported and killed by the then Ottoman
Government,’ said Ajaka.

“By the tragedy’s end an estimated 1.5 million Armenians had been
killed. The Armenian population was also permanently displaced from
the lands of Western Armenia.’

`This genocide is a true example of the detrimental effects of
discrimination,’ concluded Ajaka

Armenian National Committee of Australia (ANC Australia) Executive
Director Varant Meguerditchian applauded the legislator for
highlighting the forced removal of the Armenian people from their
historic homeland in Western Armenia during the genocide.

“While Turkey continues to deny the events of the past and continues
to destroy culturally and historically valuable monuments in Western
Armenia, a resolution to the Armenian Genocide remains unlikely,’ he
said.

“We thank Mr Ajaka for applying pressure on Turkey so that it may
bring about an end to its harmful policies and to instead build a
relationship with the Armenian people, based on true understanding and
respect.’

My Telethon Donation In Memory of My Grandmother

My Telethon Donation In Memory of My Grandmother

May 12, 2012

By Pattyl Aposhian Kasparian

It has become a ritual. Every meeting, event or gathering, my
grandmother, Rosa Bikarian, will instantly pop into my head. I see her
clear as a bell.

Pattyl Aposhian Kasparian with Houry Aposhian, her grandmother Rosine
Bikarian and Berj Alexanian.

It’s understandable, right? I spent most of my life under her
supervision. She raised me, my brother and sister while my parents
were establishing their careers. She was extremely strict, but that’s
the way she was raised herself. She was tough. She was ambitious. She
knew how to cut corners and economize. Above all, she would
constantly remind me that I am the only chance she has to pay solace
to her father, a Genocide survivor.

If I’m strong-willed and strong-minded, it’s because of her. She
taught me to be proud of who I am and to never take a back seat to
anyone.

She would sit with me for hours until I completed my Armenian
homework. She would chauffer me around from AYF meetings to dance to
Homenetmen activities. I was a typical kid- more interested in
finishing my Nancy Drew book or watching re-runs of Full House. I
would fight with her day and night. Thankfully, she encouraged me,
bribed me, forced me until she rooted the importance of the Armenian
Cause into my heart and mind.

Last April, after countless treatments and medication, we lost her to cancer.

We nicknamed my grandmother Rosa Parks. We all know that she didn’t
begin the modern day civil movement by refusing to give up her seat on
the bus. That’s not the exact moment that merits the name. It’s the
imprint she left. It’s her voice – the eloquence it carried. It’s her
courage- the courage derived from standing up for your rights. It’s
the courage of survival.

We saw it in her eyes, but never questioned it. The sadness. The
disappointment. She had a look – some thought it was mysterious or just
plain tiredness. If you ask me it was a glimmer of disdain and vague
amusement. Her smiles were always shy and held back. I never heard
her sing or watched her dance. I never heard her laugh
wholeheartedly. She never wore colorful make up or excessive jewelry.
She always felt more comfortable in the shadows.

In retrospect, the glimmer in her eyes was the last morsel of fight
left in her – which she passed on to me.

I owe my dedication and commitment to Hai Tad to my grandmother. She
erased words like second best and settling in life from my vocabulary
and added words like perfection, achievement and passion. She
compromised her life to add more meaning and significance to mine.

Even in her final years, as she would numb her body with medicine and
pump her brain with information, she continued to reinforce her
beliefs and addictions.

The faith of our nation rests in your hands.

Your generation bears the responsibility of defending our rights and
advancing the truth.

Your voice represents me and others like me.

As emotions run high around Mother’s Day, I want to humbly bow down
and tell her how much I appreciate her discipline and strength. Since
I don’t have the chance to thank my grandmother, I want to use this
opportunity to remind every mother, including myself, that we are
blessed and burdened with the same obligations- to advance ourselves
and our Cause.

I often complain about my mom. I’m all grown up with a family of my
own. I have serious responsibilities and for the most part, I’ve done
things right. Yet, she constantly pushes me to do better, to do more.
From what I wear to what I say to what I do and how I do it, she’s
the first to comment, criticize and compliment.

And, that’s the way it should be.

No matter how many businesses we own or how many degrees we earn, we
must remember the wisdom, strength and passion instilled by our
mothers and grandmothers.

This year, for mother’s day, I will cancel the expensive floral
arrangement. I will skip the over-priced mother’s day brunch.
Instead, I will donate to the 2012 ANCA Telethon and dedicate my
donation to the woman who entrusted me with her voice and strength, my
grandmother.

Azeri President Uses Platform at UN Security Council to Revile Armen

Azeri President Uses Platform at UN Security Council to Revile Armenia
Posted on May 11, 2012 by Editor

By Florence Avakian

Special to the Mirror-Spectator

UNITED NATIONS – Lies, distortions and propaganda took center stage on
Friday, May 4, as Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev addressed the
topic of `anti- terrorism’ before the United Nations Security Council
and accused Armenia of `terrorism against civilians, military
aggression and ethnic cleansing.’
Possibly aware this diatribe would occur, the UN Secretary General Ban
Ki-moon, as well as the German Foreign Minister and the ambassadors
from Security Council members US, France and Germany, were not
present.

After making the 5,000-mile journey to New York for this appearance,
he was escorted into the UN through the basement garage, so that he
would not have to see the more than 50 demonstrators from the New
York/New Jersey ARF chapter who protested across the street from the
UN, carrying the flags of Armenia and Artsakh (Nagorno Karabagh) and
signs which read, `Turkey and Azerbaijan Guilty of Genocide,’ `Baku
Guilty of Ethnic Cleansing’ and `Stop Destruction of Nakhichevan.’

Azerbaijan, which had been elected in

October 2011 to a non-permanent seat on the Security Council, mostly
with votes from Muslim member-nations of the UN, but none from
European nations, is chairing the Security Council for the month of
May and Aliyev seemed intent to get his message across while he was
being watched.

Knowing that Armenia, which is not a Security Council member, could
not respond, Aliyev accused Armenia of `dozens of terrorist acts
against the civilian population and infrastructure of Azerbaijan,’
which he said, `resulted in over 2,000 Azerbaijanis dead.’ Armenia, he
said, `orchestrated those acts with the direct involvement of its
security agencies and by using international terrorist groups.’ He
continued by saying that during the Karabagh war, `Armenia widely
practiced use of terrorist acts against the civilian population in
conjunction with military aggression to achieve ethnic cleansing.’

Again he brought up the Khojaly issue, where he accused Armenia of
`annihilating’ 613 women, children and elderly. He also accused
Armenia of `masterminding terror acts in public transport and critical
infrastructure.’

Continuing his diatribe, he said Azerbaijan has largely neutralized
this `terrorist threat from Armenia,’ but there are `additional
terrorist acts, including hitting civilian infrastructure, especially
water reservoir dams and the oil pipeline network.’ He also accused
Armenia of harboring `elements of international terrorist
organizations which are integrated into the security and defense
sector of Armenia.’

And then in one of the most appalling statements, he said Armenia
`that claims to share European and universal values has venerated
operatives of international terrorist organizations as heroes, and
even erected monuments to them.’

He finished his rant by accusing Armenia of `organized crime, drug
trafficking, money laundering and illegal arms supply in the occupied
territories of Azerbaijan.’

(A similar harangue had occurred by his father President Heydar Aliyev
at a press conference at the United Nations some years ago when as a
UN correspondent, this reporter had asked him about the massacres of
Armenians by Azerbaijan in Baku, Kirovabad and Sumgait. The face of
the elder Aliyev, who was in the last years of his presidency, became
enraged and he went into a 15-minute tirade against Armenia, finally
storming out of the UN press conference.)

Armenia’s Foreign Ministry Responds

Following the current Azeri president’s appearance before the Security
Council on May 4, Armenia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs immediately
made the following statement. `The Azeri president’s statement is
based on lies, distortions and groundless speculation. It causes deep
regret that such an august platform can be used for such base
statements. Instead of reaffirming his country’s commitment to a
peaceful settlement of the Karabagh issues, he is abusing the
authoritative tribune of the UN Security Council in order to repeat
the overused thesis of anti-Armenia propaganda of Azerbaijan, just
only forgetting to recall the Azeri leadership’s famous racist thesis
that `Azerbaijan’s main enemies are the Armenians of the world.”

The Armenian statement continued that `during the UN Security Council
briefing on anti-terrorism, the president of Azerbaijan is making an
unsuccessful attempt to lay its own responsibility of

links with terrorist groups on others, being the leader of a country
which actively used thousands of mercenaries closely linked to
notorious international terrorist networks in its unleashed war aimed
at the annihilation of the Karabagh population. It is cynical when
vain accusations are voiced against Armenia by the leader of a
country, the authorities of which masterminded massacres, ethnic
cleansing against the Armenians by medieval methods; a country where
cruel butchers of sleeping peo- ple are glorified as national heroes;
a country where a captive is humiliated in front of cameras and then
killed as it is done by well-known terrorist organiza-

tions; a country where centuries-old cultural monuments are
barbarously destroyed by famous terrorists.’

The Armenian Foreign Ministry’s statement concluded by stating that
`the continuous threats to regional peace and security, the bellicose
and hatred disseminating provocative statements of the Azeri
leadership which are in harsh contrast to the purpose and principles
of the UN Charter, are not befitting a UN member state, and undermine
the authority of the Security Council.’

UN Representative Decries Statements

Armenia’s Ambassador to the United Nations Garen Nazarian also
released a statement which read that the Azerbaijani president should
be reminded that `when using the term terrorism, his country was
listed as one harboring terrorist groups, and is a logical route for
extremists with ties to terrorist organizations. A number of recent
reports by international and regional organizations clearly reflect
that the territory of Azerbaijan is actively used by various terrorist
and religious extremist structures, serving as a safe haven for
criminal activities.’

To underscore this statement, Reporters Without Borders recently
listed a list of `predator rulers of countries.’ This list includes
Vasif Talibov, leader of Nakhichevan, in addition to Azerbaijani
President Ilham Aliyev.

And in a routine press conference at the United Nations on May 3, by
Azerbaijani Ambassador to the UN Agshin Mehdiyev on press censorship,
he admitted that he didn’t know that the day had been designated as
Press Freedom Day. As reporters chuckled at his apparent ignorance,
Mehdyev said, `Azerbaijan doesn’t need to mark this day due to its
unrestricted media coverage. We have a free press.’

On May 2, the Committee to Protect Journalists named Azerbaijan as a
`runner up’ to their list of the `Ten Most Heavily Censured Countries
in the World.’

After 18 years, Azerbaijan still wants use of force in Karabakh

May 12, 2012 – 12:10 AMT

PanARMENIAN.Net – On May 12, Armenian Foreign Minister Edward
Nalbandian met with the Co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group, Robert
Bradtke of the United States, Igor Popov of the Russian Federation,
and Jacques Faure of France, as well as the Personal Representative of
the OSCE Chairperson-in-Office Ambassador Andrzej Kasprzyk.

According to the press service of the Armenian Foreign Ministry,
Nalbandian named the visit of the co-chairs to Yerevan symbolic since
it coincided with the 18th anniversary of the ceasefire agreement.

During the past year, the parties have had several opportunities to
approach the conflict resolution, but Azerbaijan opted for regress
each time, hindering settlement of the issue, Armenian Minister noted.

`Over the past years, Azerbaijan failed to overcome the temptation to
settle the issue by the use of force, further proceeding with its
military rhetoric instead of preparing its people for peace.
Azerbaijan continues provocative actions at frontier line and
purchases large-scale armament thus hampering the conflict resolution
process and jeopardizing the fragile peace in the region,’ Nalbandian
said.

The meeting agenda also comprised implementation of agreements reached
at trilateral meeting on January 23 between the presidents of Armenia,
Russia and Azerbaijan, in particular, the mechanisms of investigation
into border line incidents.

War in Karabakh: 18th anniversary of ceasefire agreement (video)

May 12, 2012 – 12:33 AMT

PanARMENIAN.Net – May 12 marks the 18th anniversary of the ceasefire
agreement between Nagorno Karabakh, Armenia and Azerbaijan.

On May 5, 1994, the CIS Inter-parliamentary Assembly, Kyrgyzstan’s
parliament, Russian Federal Assembly and Foreign Ministry initiated a
meeting which resulted in signing of Bishkek protocol by
representatives of the Supreme Council of Armenia and Karabakh and
Azerbaijan’s Milli Mejlis. The protocol called for ceasefire on May 8
night, 1994.

On May 9, plenipotentiary representative of Russian president in
Nagorno Karabakh Vladimir Kazimirov prepared the Agreement on
Ceasefire. Azerbaijani defense minister Mamedrafi Mammadov signed it
the same day in Baku.

On May 10, Armenia’s then defense minister Serzh Sargsyan signed the
document in Yerevan, and commander of NKR Defense Army Samvel Babayan
signed the paper on May 11. The agreement took effect on May 12
midnight, 1994.

The document signed by Ministers of Defense of Armenia and Azerbaijan
as well as by the Commander of the NKR Defense Army says that the
parties `express determination to assist in all possible ways to the
cessation of armed conflict in and around Nagorno Karabakh, which does
not only cause irretrievable losses to Armenian and Azerbaijani
people, but also significantly affects the interests of other
countries in the region and seriously complicates the international
situation.’

It calls on the conflicting sides `to come to common senses and work
intensively to confirm this as soon as possible by signing a reliable,
legally binding agreement’ and `to continue meetings for peaceful
resolution of the armed conflict.’
