[Astrid is sitting in an armchair, talking straight to camera]

When I was a little girl, my father, they said they were going to take
him as a soldier. My father came and kissed me and said, told my
mother, `I know that they are going to shoot me, and you remember me
by looking after Helen.’ My name was Helen. And they took him and they
shot him. So my mother did everything to save me. She sold her rings,
she sold her earrings, she sold everything that she could get bread
and feed me.

They came and told their mother that they are going to look after the
children. My mother said, `No, I’m not going to give my child, I’ll
look after her’. She saw the children piled up, one on top of each
other and put fire around them and the children screaming, burning. It
was horrible, she said, and she was glad that she didn’t give me.
Other mothers starting crying, weeping, how their children were
burning like that. It was horrible.

When the Turks started slaughtering the Armenians, one after the
other, the queue was reaching us. Mother looked around. She saw that
there is no other way to run away. We are going to be killed. But my
mother took me, and she buried me and herself under the dead bodies.
So the Turks said, `We’ve finished them.’ They collected their horses
and they went.

My mother stayed with me under the dead bodies, fearing that they
might be hidden and kill us. So we stayed there till the morning. In
the morning she picked me up and she started walking in the desert. We
walked the Syrian Desert. And the shoes got torn out. We started
walking bare feet…. Imagine. I owe my life to my mother. She was a
real mother.

When she was walking she saw a Bedouin. He said, `Come with me.’ She
said, `if you are going to kill me, I don’t want to come with you.’ He
said, `No, no, come with me.’ So mother went with him. He saw a man
with many camels, very rich. He spoke with the man, and mother saw him
taking money from the man, and then he came to mother, and said, `Now
go with him.’ He sold us. He sold us to the man. So mother had to go
with the other man. She told him, `If you are going to kill me, I
don’t want to come.’ He said, `No no, come with me.’ So she went with
the other man.

And their aim was to kill her, to throw her into the river. A shepherd
boy knew about it. He came in the morning very early. He said,
`Sister, sister, they are going to send you to fetch water from the
river and throw you into the river and keep your child, don’t go.’ And
in the morning the man poured the water out from the tank, and came
and kicked mother and said, `Go and fetch water.’ She didn’t go. But
mother knew that he was after her to kill her.

A soldier came, a Turkish officer, and he was looking at the Bedouins.
He found my mother. He said, `Who are you? What are you?’ And my
mother told him. He said, `Look, I’ll get permission from the Governor
to come and fetch you and take you away.’ We were taken to the
Governor’s house. And they told her, `Now you can serve. You can work
here as a housekeeper.’

And while she was working there I was a little child, playing in the
garden. Opposite, there was a butler, and the butler called me. I ran
to my mother and I told her, `That man is calling me.’ She went and
saw him. The butler said, `Who are you?’ She said, `I am an Armenian
refugee.’ He said, `Do you have relatives?’ She said, yes, and she
would like to get in contact with her uncle who is in Aleppo to say
that we are alive, we are not dead. That’s how we were saved.

Dichterin Lola Landau, unternahm. Heute zählt Wegner zu den weithin
vergessenen Autoren des 20. Jahrhunderts.

Unternehmens.

neuen Drucken ausgestellt. Weitere in Wegners Nachlass überlieferte

frei.

Documentary on Dersim Massacre Screened in Germany

Documentary on Dersim Massacre Screened in Germany

years of the massacare. Photo haberpan.com

MUNICH, Germany – Survivors of the 1930s massacre in the Dersim area of
Turkey came together for `The Lost Girls of Dersim,’ a documentary screened
recently in Munich, Germany. The film focuses on the fate of Kurdish girls
who were exiled from their homes by Turkish authorities after the infamous
military campaign.

Haydar Ishek, a survivor who was four years old at the time of the
massacre, accused the Turkish government of trying to annihilate Kurds in
the area with its heavy-handed military operations between 1937 and 1938.

`Young and old, girls and women, were killed by gas bombs in the mountains
and inside caves,’ Ishek said. `They killed parents in front of small
children and made thousands of children orphans in Dersim.’

Mohammed Bayrak, speaking on a panel before the film was screened, said
Turkey’s founder Mustafa Kamal Ataturk personally gave the order for the
massacre.

`Ataturk and his friends tried to exterminate Kurds in the area,’ Bayrak
said. `First they massacred Armenians and then Kurds.’ Bayrak added that
the property of the Kurds in Dersim was given to pro-government groups.

Bayrak referred to a conversation where Ihsan Caglayangil, a former Turkish
foreign minister, acknowledged the massacre in Dersim to Kamal
Kilicdaroglu, the current head of the Republican People’s Party (CHP).
Kilicdaroglu is a native of Dersim; the CHP was founded by Ataturk.

Bayrak said Caglayangil told the CHP leader that `thousands of people took
refuge inside caves. Our soldiers gassed them just like mice. Our state
committed genocide; it committed the massacre.’

Ahmed Qahraman, another panelist at the event, pointed the finger at
Ataturk and his government for ordering and carrying out the massacre.
Qahraman said the massacre is acknowledged by the pro-Islamist government
that is currently in charge in Turkey.

In late 2011, Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan caused an uproar
when he apologized for the killing of over 13,000 people in Dersim from
1936 to 1939 by government troops.

Krikorian pledges ‘to be the voice of American Armenians’

Krikorian pledges ‘to be the voice of American Armenians’

School board member’s fiery speech compared to those by Gov. Howard
Dean, Louis Farrakhan.

By Mark Kellam, [email protected]
May 13, 2012
Glendale school board member Greg Krikorian, who is challenging Mike
Gatto for the 43rd Assembly District seat in November, ramped up his
campaign at a recent anti-genocide rally by appealing to the Armenian
American vote with a fiery speech that has since been posted online.

In his address to the crowd, Krikorian spoke in terms that appeared to
limit his appeal to Armenian voters – a strategy used many times by
candidates before him with limited success – by saying it was time to
elect someone who `speaks for us’ and that `one of our own represents
our community.’

In his speech outside Glendale Community College, which was posted on
YouTube, Krikorian also pledges `to be the voice of American Armenians
and to be the voice of Glendale – to be in touch with you.’

Krikorian said he tailored his comments – which at times became
excited and touched on the international geo-political trials of
Armenia – for his audience at the candlelight vigil commemorating the
Armenian genocide of 1915.

The 43rd Assembly District includes Glendale, Burbank, Los Feliz and
Silver Lake. With redistricting, the district now also includes La
Cañada Flintridge, Montrose and parts of La Crescenta.

Comments on the YouTube clip included a comparison between Krikorian
and former Vermont Gov. Howard Dean, who as a presidential candidate
saw his appeal sapped by an over-the-top outburst at a campaign rally,
and speeches by Louis Farrakhan, the controversial leader of the
Nation of Islam.

Krikorian acknowledged that people may twist his words or take them
out of context.

`People will throw and try to spin things to wherever they want to
sway,’ he said.

But as the November election approaches, Krikorian said he wants to
focus on the challenges he’d tackle if elected, including job
creation, education funding and an anemic state budget.

The YouTube posting cuts off before the speech ends. Krikorian said he
ended his remarks by saying: `As we approach the 236th birthday of the
United States, it’s important that we move forward.’

Krikorian said he’s spoken in the past at other events, such as those
commemorating Cesar Chavez Day at Pacific Park and Martin Luther King
Jr. in Detroit when he lived in Michigan.

`America is made up of many different ethnicities that are proud of
their heritage,’ Krikorian said in a phone interview on Thursday. `But
we immigrated here to lead a better life and help America grow.’

Early in his speech at the vigil, Krikorian spoke of the hollow
promises some politicians make during campaigns.

`We get political rhetoric all the time during the time of elections,’ he said.

During the phone interview, he pointed to President Obama, who has yet
to make good on a promise he made during his 2008 campaign to formally
recognize the Armenian genocide.

Azerbaijan hindering Karabakh conflict resolution, Armenian minister says

Yerevan, 12 May: Armenian Foreign Minister Edvard Nalbandyan said
today that Azerbaijan can’t resist the temptation of settling the
Nagornyy Karabakh issue by force.

The minister said this in Yerevan today during his meeting with the
OSCE Minsk Group co-chairs Robert Bradtke, Igor Popov, Jack Fore and
Personal Representative of the OSCE Chairman-in-Office Andrzej
Kasprzyk.

Edvard Nalbandyan noted that the sides have had the opportunity to
come close to settling the conflict several times over the recent
years but each time Azerbaijan took a step back thus hindering
reaching an agreement.

“Over these years, Azerbaijan couldn’t resist the temptation of
settling the problem by force and instead of preparing its people to
peace it continues its military rhetoric, provocations on the contact
line, keeps obtaining a huge number of weapons which impedes the
settlement process and poses a threat to the volatile situation in the
region,” said the minister.

During the meeting, the need for fulfilling agreements contained in
the joint statement of the Russian, Armenian and Azerbaijani
presidents after Sochi meeting held on 23 January – establishing a
mechanism of investigating incidents on the contact line in particular
– was also touched upon.

In near future a new textile factory belonging to ”Old Friends” LLC
will begin operating in Shoushi.

According to company owner and director Aharon Melkonyan the raw
produce and machinery will be imported from China.

”In order to set up the production as soon as possible our employees

practises textile production, for skill conversion. Besides, the
specialists of the mentioned company will be here initially to install
the machinery and operate it,” Aharon Melkonyan noted in his
interview to Karabakh-open.info.
The newly-opened factory will produce textiles to be used for making
shirts, summer caps, socks, sportswear, work gloves on the spot. A.
Melkonyan assures that in the course of work they will offer a wider
assortment of goods depending on the market demand.

`As Artsakh does not have a large consumer market, our products will
be exported to Armenia and maybe to Javakhq as well,’ the businessman
informed.

New work places at the factory will be offered mainly to women.
Initially the factory will have 18-20 employees; later a two-shift
operating mode is possible.

It should be noted that it is five years the ”Old Friends” LLC has

rendre visite demain (lundi).
