Melissa “Mighty” McMorrow pulled off women’s boxing’s upset of the
year Wednesday with a majority decision win over previously unbeaten
WBA/WBO/WIBF flyweight champion Susi “Killer Queen” Kentikian in
Hamburg, Germany.

Judges Ingo Barrabas and Lahcen Oumghar turned in 96-94 tallies in
favor of McMorrow (7-3-3), while Frank Michael Maass saw it 95-95.

“Mighty went into a foreign country in February, beat up the champion,
and got robbed,” said McMorrow’s trainer Eddie Croft, himself a
former three-time world title challenger at 122 and 126 pounds. “She
went into a foreign country again, beat up the undefeated champion,
and became the new flyweight champion of the world.”

Kentikian (29-1, 16 KOs), a Hamburg resident via Yerevan, Armenia, shut
out Teeraporn Pannimit last October in her 16th straight title fight,
while McMorrow had been unlucky in her previous bout, a split decision
defeat to Arely Mucino for the interim WBA 112-pound crown in February.

Now McMorrow will bring three belts back home to San Jose as she
becomes the second reigning flyweight champ in the Northern California
region. IBF boss Ava Knight of Chico fights out of San Francisco,
and the local fans have already begun to talk about unification.

Areshev Comments On Russian Relations With Cis And Security Interest

ARESHEV COMMENTS ON RUSSIAN RELATIONS WITH CIS AND SECURITY INTERESTS

Vestnik Kavkaza
May 17 2012
Russia

Moscow has held a summit of CIS states. Andrey Areshev, a scientist of
the Institute for Political and Social Studies of the Black Sea and
Caspian Region, expert of the Center for Central Asian and Caucasus
Studies of the Institute for Oriental Studies of the Russian Academy
of Sciences, told Vestnik Kavkaza that the summit was organized during
the switch of power in Russia, the formation of the Cabinet and the
clarification of foreign policy.

President Vladimir Putin placed emphasis on foreign affairs and
emphasized the priority of the CIS. Stability in neighboring states
is vital for Russia, especially in the southern areas of the Caucasus
and Central Asia. Any confrontation there may harm stability.

Areshev believes that Russian-Georgian relations will remain as they
are presently. Russia will continue cooperating with the breakaway
republics of Abkhazia and South Ossetia. Recent hopes for changes in
Russian attitude towards the two republics were not realized.

Russia will continue resolving the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict with
Azerbaijan and Armenia. Russia is not interested in an escalation
of the conflict. Contacts with Armenia and Azerbaijan may bring a
breakthrough in a resolution of their conflict in the future.

Expectations of a sudden breakthrough in the past 4 years were an
illusion, Areshev concludes.

Lesbian-owned DIY Rock Pub in Yerevan, Armenia gets petrol bombed
and vandalized twice since start of May

Suspected Neo Nazis have launced two arson attacks at a lesbian-owned
pub in Armenia’s capital, Yerevan, since the start of the pub.

Armenian News reported that in the second attack on 15 May, a group
of young men arrived at the gay DIY Rock Pub around 6pm, where they
burned the bar’s ‘No to Fascism’ poster and drew the Nazi Swastika
on the walls.

This rapidly followed a second attack earlier on 8 May, where a petrol
bomb was thrown through the Rock Pub’s window.

Firefighters took 30 minutes to extinguinsh the blaze, which caused
heavy damage to the facade and interior of the building.

DIY Rock Bar’s lesbian owner, Tsomak Oganezova claimed: ‘The arson
attack on the pub had been committed by members of the Armenian
Revolutionary Federation [a left-wing nationalist party].’

The Armenian Police, who took 12 hours to respond to the attack,
eventually detained two young men they found on the bar’s CCTV footage.

20-year-old ‘Arame’ and his 19-year-old brother, ‘Hambik’ were held
in custody for a few hours before the court decided that both should
be released. According to ArmeniaNow, one of them was released under
a written pledge not to leave the country and the other brother was
released on bail.

Arame’s lawyer, who is a member of the ARF, has commented that his
client’s one million drams ($2,500 ~@1,964) bail was paid by ARF
members Artsvik Minasyan and Hrayr Karapetyan.

Minasyan made a statement, confirming that he had paid the bail,
however he condemned ‘the irrelevant politicization of the phenomenon
by the owners of the pub and their supporters, as well as the
speculations over the ARF’s reputation.’

Oganezova responded to both attacks: ‘Everything started the day
when Yerkir Media TV channel [which is associated with the ARF]
interviewed me, because I had participated in a gay parade in Turkey.’

Yerkir TV deny this accusation.

Unzipped: Gay Armenia has stated that the city’s LGBT community has
gathered outside DIY holding banners saying ‘DIY: No to Fascism’
asking for donations to help towards renovation costs.

The European International Lesbian and Gay Association Europe
(ILGA-Europe) index ranked Armenia as one of the worst violators of
LGBT human rights in their recent study.

Armenia, bordered by Turkey and Georgia, is a former republic of the
Soviet Union.

An Intimate Process

AN INTIMATE PROCESS
ARMAN GALOYAN

Story from Lragir.am News:

Published: 17:21:06 – 17/05/2012

Interview with Vahan Hovhannisyan, member of ARF Bureau

ARF expressed dissatisfaction with the result of the parliamentary
election. In your opinion, who is to blame for this situation, the
society, the authorities, anyone else?

The society is to blame but it is not fair to blame everyone equally
for the fault of the society. The government is to blame, the political
forces forming government who used the desperate, miserable state of
the society which was morally bankrupt as a result of their policy.

So, is there a meaning in dealing with politics, organizing and
holding elections?

We must struggle to be able to enlarge the range of people who are
ready for a free voting.

Do you think it is possible?

Nothing is impossible, simply struggle. So, one should not be desolated
and lose hope.

Will the ARF nominate a presidential candidate in 2013?

Soon we will hold a Supreme Meeting of ARF which will identify our
future actions. I cannot say anything now. There are separate views
but I cannot say what decision will be made on the elections.

There is an opinion that only PA benefited from cooperation with PA,
while ANC and ARF lost a lot of votes. Was this cooperation effective,
in your opinion?

The purpose was to monitor the election. I think this cooperation
was not effective. But it was not right to reject this attempt,
as the representatives of the Heritage Party did.

Is the opposition to blame for the results of the elections?

Everyone was to blame. But as I said, the guilt of the society is
divided in different portions. Mainly the government was to blame.

ARF is dissatisfied with the result of the election but you did not
dispute them at the Constitutional Court.

Apply to the Constitution Court for what? In other words, when have
you achieved justice in our courts that you now advice us to? I
don’t think there is a meaning to apply to the Constitutional
Court. On the day when the CC dismissed our claim disputing the
provision prohibiting publication of the lists of people who voted,
any application is meaningless. In addition, I do not think that the
opposition has enough evidence to change anything. Earlier elections
used to report outrageous violence, ballot studying, kidnapping, etc,
this time other methods of election fraud are used. Coercion, vote
buying, distribution of votes by force, everything was an intimate
process. It was not done openly to be able to report evidence to the
court. A lot of people tell everything honestly but refuse to make
a testimony. Election fraud was perpetrated by a state machine and
now it is meaningless to dispute it within the state machine.

If the parties of the joint headquarters to monitor the elections
disputed together, wouldn’t it ensure a political effect?

It could have a political effect. But at least three parties, ANC,
ARF and PA, should act together. Dispute the election result together,
report all the evidence on breaches. This scenario is impossible for
PA for several reasons. PA will not take that step. And we are not
interesting in applying to the Constitutional Court with the Congress.

But it could have an effect.

I don’t think so. There would be a result if everyone went. But the
option of everyone seems to have been closed.

The government seems to be considering a coalition. Was ARF offered
to form a coalition government?

No.

Would you accept if there were one?

No.

What will a parliamentary group of 5 do in parliament? How do you
imagine activities of 5?

In a parliament where the ruling majority is held by people designated
by the bureaucratic machine it makes no difference whether it is 5 or
10. We had 16 members of parliament 5 years ago, they had been elected
by another society, in other conditions, other economic development.

These two situations are not compatible. 16, 5 or 1… It makes
no difference. We will fight till the end. Our extra-parliamentary
activities will undergo serious change. But it is an issue that the
Bureau should decide.

Will you opt for action outside the National Assembly?

We have never limited ourselves to parliamentary activities. There
are dozens of civilized methods of fight which are combined with
parliamentary activities.

Social polarization, poverty, immigration are reported to grow year
over year. In addition, those are official statistics. How does it
happen that in a country impoverished day by day the government gets
more votes in every next election? How do you explain this paradox?

This is a paradox. The authorities know they deceive the society but
they did it in a crafty way. I don’t care what the government thinks.

I care for what the society thinks. Most people probably thought
that their vote will not be important and they can undergo coercion,
accept election bribes, and so on. A lot of people thought so while
now it turns out that their vote was important.

Shushi Forever: Free, Green And Beautiful

SHUSHI FOREVER: FREE, GREEN AND BEAUTIFUL

Story from Lragir.am News:

Published: 16:33:20 – 17/05/2012

On 3rd February 1992, together with Lord Shannon ( as Chairman ),
Sir Anthony Buck (then Junior Minister of the Naval Forces during Mrs
Thatcher’s Premiership ) and the Lord Molloy of Ealing (Labour Peer),
we founded and registered the British-Armenian All-Party Parliamentary
Group in the British Parliament.

This was the FIRST Armenia-Host Country Parliamentary Group in
existence.

Immediately, upon the opening of the Armenian Embassy in London,
His Excellency Dr Armen Sarkissian, First ever Armenian Ambassador in
the world, became the Patron of the Group, of which he has remained
to this date its President-Elect .

By then , Baroness Cox of Queensbury , just back from her visit
with Andrei Sakharov and other scholars who were sent to observe
and report on the war in Karabagh, advocating and lobbying fiercely
against the aggression and the killings in Karabagh, was invited to
join the Group and has been, for the past nine years, its Chairman .

I remember attending Lectures by Baroness Cox where people (even
some Armenians! ) were hearing FOR THE FIRST TIME about the war in
Karabagh and the dire situation there.

Although the Group was initially created to provide reciprocated
interest and friendly relations between the Parliamentarians of both
countries, but our immediate task became one of education: as the
great majority of British Parliamentarians didn’t even know if such
country as Armenia was still in existence !

I remember 1993 when I had sent an invitation to a very illustrious
Parliamentarian: the Rt Hon Sir Marcus Fox MP who was the Chairman
of the 1922 Select Committee, asking him if he would like to join
the Group . His immediate response arrived: ‘I will be delighted
to join the British-AMERICAN All-Party Group ‘!!!!! First I did not
correct him but when a year later I met him , clarified his mistake
and thanked him for his support , he laughingly said … ‘ this is
nothing : often Dispatches sent from the Foreign Office to Azerbaijan
end up in Abijan !!!!!!!’

Every single day instructive letters, circulars, booklets and
statements were sent to our Members and by 1995 we had decided to
take a Parliamentary Delegation to Armenia and Karabagh.

The Members of the Delegation were: (in picture ONE) the Rt Hon
Baroness Seer (Leader of the Liberal-Democrat Party at the House of
Lords , 3rd from left) , Sir Trevor Skeet MP ( Conservative, second
from left ) Mr Max Madden MP (Labour, first left), Mr John Coleman
(Editor of the New European quarterly, fourth left) , Lord Shannon
(standing far right with a bomb in his hand) and of course, myself
as organiser of the visit.

The unexploded bombs captured by the Karabagh Army and seen in picture
2 are important because they carry the number-markings issued by NATO.

These were bombs given by NATO to Turkey ( as Azerbaijan was NOT
a member of NATO) and passed on from Turkey to their cousins , the
Azeris who were killing the Karabagh Armenian population with these
bombs . Baroness Seer was adamant that we should take them with us
to London, display them on the Dispatch Desk of Parliament and ask
the British Government to question and condemn the Turkish actions.

It took extreme arguing and pleading by Lord Shannon, Sir Trevor Skeet
and Max Madden for Baroness Seer to agree that it would be hasardous to
carry the bombs through Armenian and British Customs. But she insisted
to bring the pictures and ask about it in the House of Lords . Which
she did.

Picture 5 is showing a tank captured by the Karabagh Army (during the
fighting, it was customary for the Karabagh Boys to capture the Azeri
tanks, repair them and re-use them against the Azeris ) . But, in
addition to the Azeri flag, the tank carries the image of a grey wolf.

The grey wolf is the logo of the Turkish Army and this picture helped
prove the case in British Parliament, that Turkey was arming and
helping the Azeris in the killings. Baroness Seer referred at length
to the pictures in the Debate that followed in the House of Lords.

Pictures 6 and 3 are showing the Delegation in Karabagh, with their
Hosts, the Karabagh Authorities and Members of Government.

One can see in picture 4 Baroness Seer and the Members of the
Delegation at the top of a mountain: this is where the Church in SHUSHI
is situated , used as a warehouse where the Azeris were housing their
ammunitions using it to bomb and destroy Stepanaguerd, every day of the
week , relentlessly, firing over 400 Grad Missiles a day , without any
fear or concern about retaliation , secured in their knowledge that no
Armenian would ever desecrate its own Christian Church and attack it .

It was explained to the Delegation how the Karabagh Special Corps
had climbed – using only their hands and fingers as not to make any
noise and wake up the enemy- the 285 meters high mountain , in the
cover of darkness and in absolute silence to surprise the Azeris and
liberate SHUSHI and its beautiful Church . We entered that Church and
prayed in silence , praying for all who had perished , for all who were
engaged in its defence and for all who were to live there and prosper
it .That evening , during dinner, Baroness Seer proposed a Toast :
‘SHUSHI Forever and may it remain FREE, green and beautiful’.

We returned to London. The next day Baroness Seer had been invited
to her former school, Croydon High School. The girls had placed a
bouquet of roses on the chair where she had been sitting, as a pupil,
years ago. She told me that – answering to their questions about her
recent travel – she had described to these young girls what she had
seen in Armenia and Karabagh: darkness, poverty, shortage of every
imaginable commodity but, most of all, COURAGE, courage and an immense
LOVE for their Motherland, strength in their determination and faith
in their victory. She told me with great emotion in her voice : I
understand and appreciate why your people have challenged death and
sacrificed themselves for this piece of land : this is your land,
it belongs to your people and no matter what the future holds, you
must fight for it and protect it for your future generations .

The young girls, deeply moved by her words, had emptied their pockets
and gathered £107.35 of their own pocket money to be sent to children
in SUSHI.

Sadly Baroness Seer passed away, Max Madden resigned his seat in
Parliament, Sir Trevor Skeet was not re-elected and, during the
‘Hereditary Purges’ by Prime Minister Blair in the House of Lords,
over 900 Lords, Peers and Peeresses lost their seats , among them
our Chairman , Lord Shannon.

But seeing the Celebrations in Armenia, in Karabagh and in the entire
Armenian Diaspora last week, witnessing the 20th Anniversary of the
Liberation of Shushi, I remember what Baroness Seer had proposed
one evening, during dinner in Stepanaguerd and what we had toasted,
way back in 1995 : SHUSHI FOREVER. FREE . GREEN and BEAUTIFUL.

May she remain so.

Currency Curve: Dollar~Rs King Again In Post-Election Armenia

CURRENCY CURVE: DOLLAR~RS KING AGAIN IN POST-ELECTION ARMENIA
By Siranuysh Gevorgyan

NAZIK ARMENAKYAN

Observers and a number of economic experts link the recently observed
depreciation of the Armenian national currency, the dram, with the
parliamentary elections and post-election realities in Armenia.

In the days following the May 6 vote the dram began to gradually lose
its value against other major currencies, in particular the dollar.

Most exchange offices in Yerevan on Thursday asked 399 drams for a
dollar, buying the U.S. currency for 394-396 drams per dollar.

(Before the elections the dollar was selling for around 392 drams
and was at around 380 for a sustained period of time before the
electoral season).

The current rate is in fact the highest rate of the dollar in Armenia
in years, and in particular, since the Central Bank let the Armenian
currency “free-float” in March 2009 amid a starting economic recession.

Economist Samvel Avagyan says that the abrupt decline of the dram
is mainly due to two factors – the end of the election processes in
Armenia, as well as the current trends on the international currency
market where the dollar is strong now.

“The pre-election period had a positive effect in terms of shoring
up the dram as a lot of dollars were thrown into the market. After
April 20, I estimate, an additional $70 million were introduced into
the market, which could not but strengthen the dram. In other words,
the candidates were taking out large amounts of dollars from their
bank accounts, turning them into drams, were distributing money as
electoral bribes or spending otherwise on their campaigns. Now the
process is over, the demand in drams has decreased and that’s why it
has been depreciating,” the economist told ArmeniaNow, adding that
now a reverse process is on when there is a greater demand in dollars,
but the supply of the drams remains the same or lower.

Still, economic experts are not inclined to evaluate the depreciation
of the dram as a phenomenon that will necessarily have a negative
effect on the Armenian economy. At this moment, they say, the exchange
rate has settled, with no tendencies of a further depreciation of
the Armenian currency. Economists do not exclude that it may be the
result of the Central Bank’s intervention.

A certain strengthening of the dram is expected in the summer, the
peak of the agricultural season in Armenia, when there is usually a
greater demand for the local currency.
