Sri Lanka, Armenia intend to get observer status in SCO – diplomat

MOSCOW June 9

Sri Lanka and Armenia intend to get the observer status in the
Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), Russian presidential envoy
for the SCO Affairs Kirill Barsky told journalists on Saturday.

The countries’ applications will be studied, the Russian ambassador at
large said.

“In addition to the six member-countries, the SCO summit involved
observers from India, Iran, Mongolia and Pakistan. There were the
states, which had been invited at the summit. China invited
Turkmenistan and Afghanistan to participate in the summit,” the
diplomat stressed, adding that the summiteers had decided to give
Turkey the partner status. Belarus and Sri Lanka have such status.”

“Thus, Armenia and Sri Lanka gave applications for getting the
observer status. This proves growing interest in the Organization,”
Barsky said.

Commenting on the SCO expansion as a whole, he noted that this
regional forum had been opened for other members. “But we should reach
consensus on new members,” the Russian ambassador said.

“Russian President Vladimir Putin called for stepping up the work in
order to determine membership’s criteria,” he added.

Meretz refuses to delay Armenian genocide debate

The Knesset plenum may discuss Turkey’s genocide of a million and a half
Armenians nearly 100 years ago this week, despite Wednesday’s planned
release of a report by State Comptroller Micha Lindenstrauss on Israel’s
interception of Turkish ships bound for the Gaza Strip.

Meretz leader Zehava Gal-On asked for the issue to be discussed in the
plenum last week but it was delayed due to deliberation over the “Outpost
Bill.” When the Foreign Ministry asked her to wait another week due to the
sensitivity of the comptroller’s report, she refused.

Knesset faction heads will meet Monday to discuss the plenum’s agenda for
the week. They will decide whether the issue will be raised this Tuesday or
Wednesday or delayed until next week.

Gal-On said she did not want to cause problems with Turkey and she wanted
relations with the country to improve. But she said she believed the
Foreign Ministry was using the comptroller’s report as an excuse to avoid
dealing with the controversial Armenian issue.

cinq autres jeunes gens, a precise Me Sami Kahraman.

l’ambassade turque a Paris, Engin Solakoglu.

DEPUTY PM: MOVEMENTS OF ARMENIAN TROOPS ON FRONT LINE CONNECTED TO U.S. SECRETARY OF STATE’S VISIT

Azerbaijan

The Armenians have become more active on the front line in recent days
coinciding with the visit of U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton to
the region, deputy Prime Minister Ali Hasanov told reporters on Friday.

He said the OSCE Minsk Group and other countries have been making calls
to prevent war for the past 20 years, but haven’t taken specific steps.

“It is easy to issue a call, but they don’t take any steps. In
principle these types of calls of co-chairs and international
organisations can be considered as being positive. The war is not
profitable for either side.

“However, it is those who have made the statements and took part in
the settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, are the same ones
who do not take any steps. Let them at least resolve the conflict and
there wouldn’t be any necessity for military operations. If we look
at the problem from this position we will see that their statements
are just empty words.

“That is why the President of Azerbaijan and Supreme Commander
repeatedly stated that if Armenia does not renounce aggression our
armed forces will liberate the occupied territories. This declaration
is in force to this day,” Hasanov said.

He said there is no doubt that Armenia is in a quandary now.

“Even patrons now turn their backs on Armenia. We believe that the
key to solving the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict is in the hands of Russia.

This country has finally begun to adhere to an objective position,”
the deputy Prime Minister said.

PACE FORMAL MEMBER: NAGORNO-KARABAKH CONFLICT IMPEDES REGION’S NORMAL DEVELOPMENT

Europe sees the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict as its own problem, a former
member of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe and the
German Bundestag, Eduard Lintner, said at a meeting with Minister of
Agriculture of Azerbaijan Ismet Abasov.

“This conflict does not allow the region to develop normally, and we
see that it is not a frozen, but a ‘hot’ conflict,” Lintner said.

He noted that two years ago, the European Parliament adopted a
declaration which recognizes the territorial integrity of Azerbaijan,
and that Lintner and other participants in the meeting support the
position of Azerbaijan on this issue.

In turn, Minister of Agriculture of Azerbaijan Ismet Abasov noted
that the fact of occupation of Azerbaijani lands does not allow to
use fully the whole agricultural potential of the country.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988
when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. Armenian
armed forces have occupied 20 per cent of Azerbaijan since 1992,
including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts.

Azerbaijan and Armenia signed a ceasefire agreement in 1994. The
co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group – Russia, France and the U.S. –
are currently holding peace negotiations.

Armenia has not yet implemented the U.N. Security Council’s four
resolutions on the liberation of the Nagorno-Karabakh and the
surrounding regions.
