l’ancienne premier ministre ukrainien Ioulia Tymochenko.

DPA CULTURE, ENTERTAINMENT Vatican religion Armenia Turkey Pope to
lead special Armenian Mass on 100th anniversary of genocide Vatican
City Pope Francis will celebrate a special mass for Armenian Catholics
in St Peter’s Basilica on April 12, the Vatican announced Tuesday.

No official motivation was given, but the service will be held in a
year marking the 100th anniversary of the Armenian genocide.

Up to 1.5 million Armenians are estimated to have been killed by
Turkish Ottoman troops during World War I through massacres and death
marches.

The topic is taboo in Turkey, where authorities reject classifying the
killings as genocide.

In June 2013, meeting Armenian Patriarch Nerses Bedros XIX Tarmouni at
the Vatican, Francis referred to the 1915 events as “the first
genocide of the 20th century.” His remarks prompted an official
complaint from the Turkish government.

Majority of international community supports recognition of Armenian
Genocide: survey

YEREVAN, Jan. 27 (Xinhua) — The majority of the world community votes
for international recognition of the 1915 Armenian Genocide, the
Armenpress news agency reported Tuesday citing a survey.

According to the index issued by the Foundation for Political
Innovations, based in Paris, 70 percent of the people around the world
considered the 1915 bloody event in the Ottoman Empire as genocide.

The survey was conducted among the residents, aged from 16 to 29, in
Germany, Russia, the United States and other countries.

About 1.5 million Armenians were killed in the Ottoman Empire in
1915-1923, and the survivors were expelled and found refuge in
different parts of the world.

Now more than 20 countries have officially recognized the fact of the
Armenian Genocide.

Armenians across the world will mark the 100th anniversary of the 1915
Genocide on April 24, 2015.

Fioletovo Gold Mining Project Expertise Suspended

Fioletovo Gold Mining Project Expertise Suspended

The expertise of Fioletovo gold mining project has been suspended
based on the solicitation of “Grade Redmet” company, as Henrik
Grigoryan, Deputy Direction of “Environmental Expertise” SNCO of
Nature Protection Ministry stated at the meeting on 23 January.

Under the press release of the Public Council, the company reached
this conclusion taking into consideration the negative opinion of the
local population about the mining project.

During the discussion four committees of the Public Council opposed to
this mining project taking into consideration cultural and historical,
soil and environmental problems of the mining project.

Yuri Javadyan, the member of the Public Council, Chairman of
Agricultural Committee, urged “Grade Redmet” company to submit a
closed mining project, which will enable neutralizing possible damage.

The representative of “Grade Redmet” company noted that they can’t
implement the project without the consent of the community residents
at the same time raising the question of damages. As a positive side
of the mining, he outlined the presence of the working places.

The negative decision of the Public Council members will be submitted
to Public Council Chairman Vazgen Manukyan, as well as Armenian PM
Hovik Abrahamyan.

Germany’s inaction led to 1.5 Armenians’ slaughter in 1915 – MP

18:18 * 27.01.15

A lawmaker of Armenia’s ruling political force has called for
explanations from a former German ambassador for a recent remark
comparing the Armenian-Russian alliance with relations between a
master and slave.

Speaking to Tert.am, Arman Sahakyan of the Republican parliamentary
faction recalled historic records proving that the 1.5 million
Armenians’ WWI-era massacre in the Ottoman Empire was caused by what
he described as Germany’s guilty inaction.

Sahakyan said he finds that the Germans have the wrong understanding
of their national ideas and ideology. “Two thousand more Armenians
were killed to liberate the world from the fascist evil. So I think
Germany’s incumbent ambassador has to make clarifications to shed
light on his predecessor’s expressions,” said the Republican MP.

In a recent interview with the Gyumri-based TV channel GALA,
Ambassador Hans-Joshem Shmidt referred to prominent works by Russian
classics (Pushkin, Lermontov), describing the Caucasus region as a
territory belonging to Russia, with the Armenians being slaves to
Russian masters.

Sahakyan, who is a single-seat MP elected from second largest city,
said he does not see any connection between the statement and the
recent brutal family murder in Gyumri.

“What happened was a tremendous tragedy, and we unfortunately will not
return those killed, but I think this is a problem between us and
Russia alone; it has [to be resolved] by the two countries’ law
enforcers,” he said, recommending against dropping historical hints.

Asked whether he observes any disharmony and estrangement between the
city’s Russian military base and the population in the wake of the
tragic incident, Sahakyan didn’t deny a certain degree of tension but
said he hopes the passions will little by little calm down.

“This cannot remain without consequence, so naturally a certain revolt
and just demand has really matured. But I think we’ll manage to
restore the Gyumri people’s sense of honor in the course of time,” he
said.

Artsvik Minasyan: Any integration is senseless for unreformed econom

Artsvik Minasyan: Any integration is senseless for unreformed economy of Armenia

ArmInfo’s Interview with Artsvik Minasyan, well-known Armenian
economist, MP from ARF Dashnaktsutyun

by Arthur Yernjakyan
Tuesday, January 27, 22:02

The Western sanctions and the steep fall in oil prices have resulted
in economic downturn in Russia and have affected Armenia, too. Some
experts think that if Armenia chose European integration instead of
Eurasian one, the situation in the economy would be different. What
would you say?

Armenia’s economy depends on the situation in Russia, which is
reflected in the commodity turnover and transfers. In this light, even
if Armenia failed to join the Eurasian Economic Union, it would all
the same feel the negative impact of the “sagging” Russian economy.
Armenia’s commodity turnover with the CIS countries is 35%, with its
major part falling on Russia, which is almost equal to the commodity
turnover with the EU countries. When you study the structure of the
commodity turnover, you understand that Armenian commodities cannot be
ousted from the European market as a result of Eurasian integration.
In this context, we will at least maintain the current level of
relations with European states unless the EU takes a political
decision the way it was in the case of Russia. Moreover, the decline
in prices of the key primary goods may lead to creation of new
productions in Armenia, which may be in demand in the EU. The matter
concerns cheap oil, gas and other primary goods. The fall in their
prices will be able to enhance the competitiveness of our agricultural
products, which may be exported to the EU.

In Jan 2015 the EBRD downgraded its outlook of Armenia’s GDP growth
for 2015 from 3.5% to 0% and linked it to the situation in Russia. Do
you agree with such an outlook?

No, I don’t. I expect a 4-4.5% GDP growth this year. The EBRD complies
with the EU’s policy, so, it also has political motives. So, its
negative outlook concerning Armenia was just a response to the
country’s accession to the Eurasian Economic Union.

In addition, this year Armenia will mark the Centenary of the Armenian
Genocide, which implies a big inflow of tourists. Tourism is one of
the most important economy sectors in Armenia and also secures GDP
growth. The inflow of tourists in the future depends on the quality of
our services.

I believe that our country’s economic growth depends exclusively on
the policy conducted by the authorities. If we really start attracting
large investments to the industrial sector, for instance, to
rehabilitation of the Nairit Plant or to the hi-tech sector, including
the enterprises transferred to Russia against the government debt, at
least half of the expected 4.5% economic growth in 2015 will be
ensured by industry and agriculture. But if we leave everything as it
is, if our government keeps conducting its ostrich policy, if the
authorities fail to perform the needed reforms and if no domestic
atmosphere of accord is formed, we may have even worse results. Due to
the country’s passive behavior, we may even lose Karabakh.

Following the accession to the Eurasian Economic Union, the public and
the business expected the primary goods – gas, oil derivatives,
diamonds – to drop in prices. However, the situation is quite the
opposite. By late 2014 the petroleum prices even rose despite the
considerable decline in world prices of oil. Why have the Armenian oil
traders refused cheaper European oil products and have chosen more
expensive Russian ones?

When we signed three big agreements with Russia concerning oil
products, gas price formation and import of rough diamonds, all the
calculations were made in US dollars. Afterwards, both the Russian
ruble and the Armenian dram sharply depreciated and this resulted in
the growth in prices of petroleum and other goods. But this does not
at all mean that we should depend on one source of supply. These
agreements do not restrict our relations with Iran, for instance,
which is an alternative source. If you remember, there was a joint
Armenian-Iranian project on creation of an oil refinery in Armenia,
but the project has remained ink on paper.

What prevents our oil traders from buying cheaper fuel from Europe,
not from Russia?

This is a monopolistic position, when the authorities give
administrative privileges to monopolies and require them to do what
the authorities dictate. What the authorities should do is make the
market open and competitive for economic entities with expectations of
economic benefits rather than with administrative privileges. This is
approach Number 1 and one should not shift the blame on the EEU, i.e.
one should not say that strategic goods can be supplied from the EEU
countries only.

There are two opposite opinions about the investment activity
following Armenia’s accession to the EEU. Some experts claim that
within the EEU Armenia will become more attractive for investments.
Others think that the EEU will hinder the inflow of investments.

I am deeply convinced that the accession to the EEU will considerably
restrict the inflow of foreign investments but it does not deprive us
of the opportunity to attract investments. In fact, much depends on
the investment climate, regulation of economy and national
legislation. Armenia’s economy should be open and non-monopolized so
that the foreign investors could have a desire to invest and could see
fair competition here. Our legislation should ensure protection of
property rights and a fair judicial system. If we manage to do this,
we will have the right to expect growth in investments. If we fail to
do this, any integration will become senseless.

Armenia would like to be free to choose between the EU and the EEU or
to establish partnership with Asian countries and to conduct an
independent and balanced policy with all countries. We had to make the
decision we made for security reasons. This does not mean that Armenia
is safe now. But if we failed to make that decision, the degree of
danger would be higher. Armenia’s failure to join the EEU would have
resulted in irreversible territorial losses.

Here the viewpoints also differ. Some experts think that the security
system should also be diversified.

We couldn’t diversify the political relations. NATO does not extend
its influence in our region, as it wants to avoid a conflict with
Russia. Therefore, today Armenia has no alternative to the CSTO
anti-aircraft defense and ground defense system. The US policy in this
region obviously needs to revise NATO’s role.

But even within the CSTO, it is very important to fulfill our rights
to the full extent. Azerbaijan’s aggressive actions against the
Nagorno-Karabakh Republic and on the borders of Armenia demonstrate
that we have grounds to claim something from the CSTO. Unfortunately,
the international community was unable to tackle one of the most
important issues for Armenia – opening of the border with Turkey
without any preconditions. This is why we can expect no other security
system for us.

Armenians “more than anyone empathize” with Jewish people’s pain,
Sargsyan says on Holocaust Remembrance Day

GENOCIDE | 27.01.15 | 12:11

Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan during a visit to the memorial
complex at the former Majdanek concentration camp near Lyublin,
Poland, in January 2013.

It would perhaps have been possible to prevent the mass extermination
of Jews during World Would Two had the WWI crimes against humanity
been fully condemned by the international community and those
responsible for them been duly punished, Armenian President Serzh
Sargsyan said in his January 27 address on International Holocaust
Remembrance Day.

The Armenian leader, in particular, referred to the mass killings of
Armenians in Ottoman Turkey during the years of the First World War
that constituted the first genocide of the 20th century.

“The Armenian people, who are commemorating the 100th anniversary of
the Armenian Genocide this year, more than anyone empathize with the
pain of the Jewish people,” Sargsyan stressed, according to his press
service.

“We reaffirm our commitment to jointly struggle for the prevention of
crimes aimed against humanity with our determination to say ‘Never
Again’,” the Armenian leader concluded.

The Genocide of the Jewish people known as Holocaust is also
internationally remembered on January 27, the day when in 1945
advancing Soviet troops liberated Auschwitz, a concentration camp
built by Nazi Germany in Poland.

An estimated 1.1 million prisoners, around 90 percent of them being
Jews, were exterminated at Auschwitz in 1941-1945. Many of the victims
were killed in notorious gas chambers, others died of starvation,
forced labor, infectious diseases, individual executions and medical
experiments. The bodies of the victims were burned in incinerators.

Armenian President’s message on International Holocaust Remembrance

Armenian President’s message on International Holocaust Remembrance Day

12:43, 27 Jan 2015
Siranush Ghazanchyan

Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan has issued a message on the
International Day of Commemoration in Memory of the Victims of the
Holocaust. The message reads, in part:

“The genocide perpetrated against the Jewish people during the years
of theWorld War Second is, indeed, one of the most cruel and tragic
pages in human history. January 27, which symbolized the liberation of
the Auschwitz concentration camp, became an important haven for
stopping the evil of the Holocaust.

The commemoration of the Holocaust victims and the condemnation of
this genocide is urgent as long as there are most different
expressions of hatred and intolerance based on national, racist and
religious ground, and as long as the threat of reoccurrence of crimes
against humanity is there.

It’s an unequivocal truth that consigning of the victims of genocide
to oblivion and denying the genocides, especially on a state level, is
one of the stages of that crime. It’s a double crime not only against
the innocent victims, but also against the present and the future.
Perhaps, it could be possible to prevent the crime perpetrated under
the cover of World War Second, had the crime against humanity
perpetrated during World War First been dully condemned by the
international community.

Once again bowing before the memory of the innocent victims of the
Holocaust, I would like to express my support and solidarity to the
Jewish people, the Jewish community of Armenia. The Armenian nation,
which is commemorating the 100th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide,
more than understands the pain of the Jewish people.

I reiterate our commitment to fight jointly to prevent the crimes
against humanity with a resoluteness to say “never again.”
