[Feature] ‘Everybody Thinks Europe Is A Christian Continent’

‘EVERYBODY THINKS EUROPE IS A CHRISTIAN CONTINENT’

EUobserver.com
August 6, 2012 Monday 10:38 AM GMT

EU institutions do not do God. But for some religious leaders in
EU-aspirant countries, member states’ Christian origins are still
politicaly important.

The morning call to prayer at the Blue Mosque in Istanbul means
different things to different people.

For Muslims, it is an invitation to muster spiritual energy for the
working day. For some Western visitors it is a sign that they are on
the edge of an exotic world.

With regular news about Islamic extremism – Spain this week charged two
al-Qaeda suspects, Denmark in June charged four Muslims for plotting
to murder a cartoonist who made fun of Mohammed – it is a world that
many see as hostile to the West.

The voice among the Blue Mosque minarets often belongs to Metin Balci.

When EUobserver spoke to the muezzin and imam at the famous site in
a recent interview, he said what some Turkish diplomats privately
believe: EU opposition to Turkish membership is based, in part,
on Islamophobia.

“What we hear and what they are telling us is that they are not a
Christian club. But if you look at their approach to us, then we see
and we feel that it is such a club,” Balci said.

The imam’s view of EU-Turkish relations is of two competing
civilisations trying to come together.

He noted that Islamic societies in medieval times led Europe in terms
of science, women’s rights and even “personal hygiene.”

“The West has the power now. But the history of the world is not 100
years. It is a longer span. Things change … I believe that Islam
in the future can take the lead once again,” he said.

He added that EU countries have no moral superiority because
colonialists in modern times pillaged Africa and the Middle East.

Quoting South Africa’s bishop Desmond Tutu, he said: “When missionaries
came to Africa they had the Bible and we had the land.

They said, ‘Let us pray.’ We closed our eyes. When we opened them we
had the Bible and they had the land.”

Balci’s idea of a “Christian club” is anathema to EU policy.

Despite Vatican lobbying, the EU Treaty does not mention the word
“Christian” on any of its 403 pages.

It begins by saying the Union “[draws] inspiration from the cultural,
religious and humanist inheritance of Europe.” Later on, it says that
any “European state” can join.

When asked by this website what “European” means, the European
Commission said it means respect for “universal” values, such as
“democracy, equality and the rule of law.”

When commission chief Jose Manuel Barroso recently met religious VIPs,
he dutifully invited all kinds of hats: imams, rabbis, bishops and
Bahai (an Iranian sect).

The EU is already home to 13 million Muslims, over 1 million Jews
and 370 million people who tell polsters they are Christian. Apart
from Turkey, two other majority Muslim places – Albania and Kosovo –
are in line to join.

For rabbi David Rosen, a leading Jewish thinker, the EU really has
left its past behind.

Referring to a 17th century accord between Roman Catholic and
Protestant countries, he told this website in a written note in July:
“The treaty of Westphalia and the adaptation of Christianity to a
world in which a particular denomination did not have absolute power,
and ultimately its ability to see this as good for its own needs,
facilitated acculturation to diversity, individuality.”

Clash of civilisations?

Rosen believes there is no clash of civilisations, but that there is
a clash between antiquity and modernity.

“It is … between the enlightened (who embrace the good things
of modernity – science, individual autonomy, human rights) and the
reactionary (who feel threatened by those things). The enlightened
are those who do not claim a monopoly on truth and the reactionary
are those that do,” he said.

“Muslims from ‘Europeanized’ (e.g. Balkan) societies, which can even
include some Arab societies (e.g. the educated elite in Morocco),
are able to be part of European society as well as anyone else.”

Balci is not alone in thinking that the Union is still more Christian
than it says, however.

“With all due respect to the strong presence of Muslims in Europe, I
think every single person in Europe thinks that Europe is a Christian
continent, not Muslim,” bishop Hovakim Manukyan, an ecumenical officer
at the Armenian Apostolic Church, told EUobserver in an interview
in May.

Contrasting Armenia to Turkey, he said: “We are also Christian and
we have much more in common [with EU member states]. I would say the
same about our Christian neighbour Georgia.”

He noted that the old Armenian-Turkish conflict still has a religious
side.

When Armenians last year sang mass in Akdamar, in eastern Turkey,
Manukyan said that Turkish Muslims held a ritual “against” them in
an old Armenian church-turned-mosque in Ani to show who is boss.

The bishop, who used to work with Comece, a Brussels-based Christian
lobby, added that Armenian communities in, say, Belgium or France
have “fully assimilated,” while Muslims are “a challenge” in terms
of integration.

Laying aside the bogeyman of al-Qaeda, Islamic antipathy toward the
West is on show in the heart of the EU.

On an everday level, a recent film by a British student in the EU
capital documented insults hurled mostly by Arab men at skirt-wearing
women in the street.

One EU security expert told this website that the Grand Mosque in the
Parc Cinquantenaire in Brussels, next door to Barroso’s headquarters,
“has some of the most radical preachers you will hear anywhere
in Europe.”

Meanwhile, a few hours by plane from Brussels – in Egypt, Iraq or
Syria – the clock is turning backward on the EU’s post-modern values.

The US invasion of Iraq and the Arab Spring have prompted fresh waves
of sectarian violence in the home of the world’s oldest Christian,
Muslim and Jewish communities.

Up to 1 million Iraqi Christians have fled the country since the fall
of Saddam Hussein. Dozens of Egyptian Copts have been killed since
the fall of Hosni Mubarak.

Israel’s EU-and-US-endorsed ethnic cleansing of occupied territories
also acts as a “lightning conductor” – in Rosen’s phrase – for
anti-Western feeling.

‘Enlightened’ Islam

Going back to Balci in the Blue Mosque, the imam voiced the kind of
“enlightened” ideas which Rosen described.

Balci said Turks want to join the EU for the sake of good governance.

“I trust the EU will make decisions about Turkey according to its
democratic rules … We would like to join the Union not because we
want its money or its technology, but because we would like to have
the same democratic system,” he said.

He noted that Muslim societies have their own form of enlightenment,
however.

Contrasting the Islamic culture of family values and social welfare
to the EU’s economic and technological rat-race, he said: “We have
things to take from Europe and things to give to Europe. Europe needs
more humanity … Western technology has put a man on the moon. But
nobody goes upstairs to the top floor to visit their sick neighbour,
to ask if they’re OK.”

He criticised people who say Islam breeds terrorism and puts down
women.

“Whoever thinks this should read more history … It is not fair to
take Iran or Saudi Arabia as the example of all Islam or of all Arab
lands,” he said.

Turning to the Danish cartoon controversy, he said the newspaper was
wrong back in 2005 to insult Muslim sensibility.

But he showed his own brand of Islam in saying that Muslims were
wrong to react with anger.

Balci noted that Islam follows the teachings of Christian “prophets”
– such as Moses, Abraham and Jesus – as well as Mohammed. He quoted
Jesus in saying that Muslims should have “turned the other cheek.”

Showing again a gentle face of Islam, when asked by EUobserver
what he feels when he sings the morning call to prayer, he answered
with humour.

“Mostly, I feel sleepy,” Balci said.

Microelectronics Olympiad Backed By Synopsys, IEEE

MICROELECTRONICS OLYMPIAD BACKED BY SYNOPSYS, IEEE

EE Times
Aug 9 2012

LONDON – It won’t be speed over 100-meters but knowledge about
microelectronics at the nanometer-scale that will determine the winners
in a competition to take place in Yerevan, the capital of Armenia,
later this year. The idea behind the forthcoming electronic engineering
competition is to turn microelectronics engineers into medal winners
and inspire the next generation to enter the electronics industry.

The Seventh Annual International Microelectronics Olympiad of Armenia
will be held on October 4, 2012 in, Yerevan, Armenia, and will be
held in cooperation with the Institute of Electrical and Electronics
Engineers (IEEE) Test Technology Technical Council (TTTC). Initiated
in 2006, the Olympiad is held under the patronage of the Armenia
prime minister and Synopsys Armenia CJSC is the general organizer
and a sponsor.

Armenia is a former Soviet Republic that lies to the south of Georgia
and to the east of Turkey. It has a good educational infrastructure
that has produced many engineering and software graduates.

For one day engineers in the Olympiad compete in the areas of digital
IC design and test, analog and mixed-signal IC design and test,
semiconductor devices and technology, and mathematic and algorithmic
issues of electronic design automation.

“The first Armenian Microelectronics Olympiad in 2006 attracted 82
participants. The event has since grown to an international contest
including numerous award categories and 349 participants from 12
countries,” said Rich Goldman, the president of the Olympiad Organizing
Committee, CEO of Synopsys Armenia and vice president for corporate
marketing and strategic alliances at Synopsys. “Working with IEEE
will enable further growth.”

Operating under the motto “Recognize the best, inspire the next,”
the Olympiad aims to highlight the brightest, most talented engineers
under the age of 30. Additional goals are to stimulate the development
of microelectronics in the host country Armenia and in participating
countries, by recognizing and inspiring talented engineers. In
particular, the hope is that the publicity around the competition
will increase interest in microelectronics among young specialists.

It is also expected to produce data to guide adjustments to educational
programs in the countries contestants come from.

“This collaboration is a win-win-win situation for IEEE, for the
Olympiad, and for Armenia as a country,” said Dr. Yervant Zorian,
president of the IEEE TTTC and chief architect at Synopsys. “The
involvement of IEEE, the largest organization of electrical and
electronic engineers, helps the Olympiad gain more international
recognition. The Olympiad contributes to IEEE’s efforts to encourage
and support an interest in technology in young adults; holding the
contest in Armenia highlights the country’s technical leadership.”

As with the Olympic games the Microelectronics Olympiad has attracted
a set of sponsors including: Synopsys, Microsoft, Vivacell-MTS,
Armenia’s leading mobile operator and the Union of Manufacturers and
Businessmen of Armenia.

Krikor Amirzayan (president d'” Armenia “, conseiller municipal a

ANKARA: Azerbaijani Soldiers To Be Trained In Turkey"

AZERBAIJANI SOLDIERS TO BE TRAINED IN TURKEY

Today’s Zaman
Aug 1 2012
Turkey

Special soldiers from the Azerbaijani Armed Forces will undertake
commando training in Turkey, the Anatolia news agency reported
on Tuesday.

According to the press department of Azerbaijan’s Defence Ministry,
special representatives from the Azerbaijani military will be trained
at Egirdir Mountain Commando School, attached to the Turkish Armed
Forces. At the school Azerbaijani soldiers will take part in training
courses for “defying obstacles” on 13-17 August and “primary commando
training” between 27 August and 16 November.

The training will be held as part of military cooperation between
Turkey and Azerbaijan, which has been in place for many years. Both
sides regularly hold discussions over the military-political situation
in Azerbaijan as well as in the region, and the problems caused
by the situation in Nagorno-Karabakh, a conflict that has remained
unresolved for decades between Turkey’s closest ally, Azerbaijan,
and its estranged neighbour Armenia.

Experts’ Assessment Of Turkey’S Negative Role In The Region: Ankara’

EXPERTS’ ASSESSMENT OF TURKEY’S NEGATIVE ROLE IN THE REGION: ANKARA’S AMBITION BY SOLICITING TO THE WEST
by Hoda Dehqan-Bazrafshan

Siyasat-e Ruz
July 31 2012
Iran

Recent events in Syria and this nation’s constant intervention in
Syria show that both Turkey and Syria are pursuing their interests in
the region but these are interests that have been designed based on
the demands of the West, which have brought many crises to the region.

Developments in the Middle East and North Africa, which have brought
the history of this region and indeed the history of the world to
a sensitive stage, have prepared the way for the self-determination
of nations. In addition, these developments have been a test for the
governments that have always claimed to lead the way in defending the
right of sovereignty of nations and likewise the implementation of
Islamic Shariah. In this the nation of Turkey, which in recent years
has made gestures about defending the most important ideal of Muslims,
meaning Palestine, has adopted contradictory positions and sold off
accumulated assets.

In Erdogan’s time Turkey has outwardly challenged the Zionist
regime and has repeatedly taken anti-Zionist positions. Examples are
Erdogan’s argument with Shimon Perez and leaving the meeting as a
sign of protest, sending the humanitarian flotilla to Gaza called the
Marmara Ship, which was attacked by Zionist commandos and other things,
all of which showed anti-Zionist action. However the developments of
the Islamic awakening put Turkey to a difficult test.

Along with Saudi Arabia and Qatar, this nation suddenly adopted
policies contradicting previous orientations and it spared no effort
weakening the axis of resistance, meaning Syria. The basic question
is, what is the reason Turkey adopted these positions in its political
behavior?

Turkey’s desire to join the EU, close relations with the United
States, writing America’s dictated policy in Syria, deploying the
missile shield on Turkish soil and the presence of the navy in the
Black Sea are among the factors some analysts believe have impacted
the Turkish government’s contradictory behavior. Turkey always
claims to support Hamas but on the other hand it does not hesitate
to take any measure against the government of Syria – the axis of
the resistance. This nation has adopted unstable positions lacking
in strategic method. On the one hand in foreign policy we are seeing
the slogans of non-intervention in the internal affairs of neighbor
nations and solving problems with neighbors but on the other hand we
are seeing the hosting of Bashar al-Asad’s opponents, the organization
of their meetings, the deployment of its army and the opposition on
Syria’s borders and even inviting Bashar al-Asad to step down from
power, the threat to support the issuance of a resolution against
Syria in the Security Council and going along with the Arab League
on the economic sanctions against Syria.

Turkey is trying to show itself as a supporter of the interests and
human rights of the people of Syria; it claims to support the people
but it does everything against the Syria’s interests and to create
insecurity in this nation to the point that to divert world public
opinion Turkish officials are prepared to sabotage Iran’s image. They
declare they intercepted the arms shipment that has been sent to Syria
from Iran even though this is without basis or fact and this weapon
is just a cover for Turkey’s criminal role in sending weapons to the
terrorists in Syria. These actions conflict with the desire of the
people of Turkey to maintain friendly relations with Syria. Many of
Turkey’s political parties, groups and public figures are opposed to
the Ankara government’s policies on Syria. They do not want Turkey
to get into America’s political games in the region. One of the main
reasons for the resignation of Turkey’s military commanders was to
protest this issue.

Some other analysts believe Turkey is thinking of forming another big
Ottoman Empire and with the internal problems that have been raised
by Saudi Arabia – as a big power center in the Muslim World – this
unfounded idea has been reinforced. Turkey is trying to become a big
regional power and a model for future Middle East and Arab governments,
but this nation suffers from an internal weakness. On the one hand
the army accuses the Ankara government of taking steps to weaken
this nation’s secular system and on the other hand the government
accuses the army of being incapable of dealing with the PKK. Issues
like this are just some of the conflicts in Turkey’s political space
in recent years. Turkish officials are making every effort to achieve
their main objective, which is regional leadership.

Turkey’s behavior in relation to the Syria developments conflicts with
this nation’s interests with its powerful neighbors such as Russia
and Iran; if Turkey insists on its Syria policies with its neighbors
– Russia, Armenia, Iraq and Iran – it will have a problem and the
results of ten years of Turkey’s foreign policy with its neighbors
will be endangered. Turkey and its neighbors are now on two completely
different fronts. Nations such as Iran and Iraq emphasize that that
the Syria solution is solely political and turning over affairs to the
people of this nation, a people who have shown they oppose change at
the head of power and who confirm continuation of Assad’s presidency.

On the other hand following the Western game Turkey is insisting
on intensifying the crisis and making Syria restive and they regard
maintaining this nation’s political system as the end of their task.

In view of these circumstances the questions arise, why is Turkey
emphasizing to this extent the continuation of negative movement in
Syria, and what will the future be in this nation’s relations with
its neighbors if this trend continues? In the following interview
with experts Siyasat-e Ruz examines these questions.

Turkey in the Framework of the West’s Interests

Dr. Heshmatollah Falahatpisheh, expert on political affairs and member
of the Eighth Majlis National Security Commission, said Turkey is
moving in line with the West’s interests in the region. He said:
In view of the wave of the Islamic awakening in the nations of the
region Turkey, which is leaning more towards the West, is trying to
implement Western policies and models in the region to protect its
own interests. It is therefore making every effort to overthrow the
Bashar Assad government because by removing the foundations of the
Bashar Assad government Turkey will also play a wider role advancing
its interests in the region and in Syria.

Concerning Turkey’s actions towards Iran he also said: In view of
the authority of the Islamic Republic of Iran and its independent
and unique strategic standing, neither Turkey nor any other nation
can create the slightest problem for Iran.

This political expert said: Iran is a nation that has maintained its
authority in the region in terms of security. The nation’s political
system is a progressive system and therefore activity in Iran’s
neighbor nations such as Syria will not make the slightest change in
the nation’s security.

He said Turkey is a nation that plays a dual role in the region. He
added: On the one hand it leans towards Asia and on the other Turkey
plays a Western role; it wants to get concessions from both sides. For
this reason it has the most support from NATO and the EU.

Falahatpisheh said: Outwardly Turkey shows itself to the other nations
in the region as a nation that wants democracy but with the support
of the Westerners and the Zionist regime it is in fact a hand-picked
agent of the West’s policies.

Turkey’s Outwardly Islamist Character

Another expert on political affairs, Hassan Hanizadeh, said Turkey has
acted on behalf of America and NATO during the Syria crisis. He said:
Since the terrorists are getting all logistical and weapons resources
from NAT O, America, Saudi Arabia and Qatar over the shared border
between Turkey and Syria, Turkey is therefore seeking to bring down
Bashar Assad and install a government hand-picked by the Westerners.

He added: Turkey wants to break off the Province of Adlib, which is
close to the shared border between Turkey and Syria and to take over
in some way this part of Syria’s soil; also after the fall of the
Bashar Assad it wants to bring back the era of Ottoman Empire rule
in this nation.

This expert on political affairs said: For this reason with the
financial support of the Western governments Turkey is taking
destructive measures on their behalf, although what is happening in
Syria is the defeat of the West’s plan.

He said: If Turkey can play an effective role bringing down Bashar
Assad, in the next stages it will definitely seek to suppress Lebanon’s
Hizbollah from the resistance scene in Lebanon, to create insecurity
in Iran in the years to come and even in the months to come. Hanizadeh
said: The Islamic Republic of Iran must not be deceived by outwardly
Muslim Recep Tayyip Erdogan because this nation of Turkey is already
the most dangerous government for Iran.

Noting that Iran’s capability in the region is unique, he said: However
we must not lose sight of the plots of the West’s hand-picked agents,
especially Turkey, which is both a NATO member and whose interests
are also tied to the interests of the West, because these events in
Syria are the result of damaging Iran’s strategic interests.

Russia Spares No Effort To Bring Closer Sides’ Positions On Karabakh

RUSSIA SPARES NO EFFORT TO BRING CLOSER SIDES’ POSITIONS ON KARABAKH

news.am
August 08, 2012 | 11:05

Russia will do its best for the settlement of the Karabakh conflict
and bringing closer positions of the sides, Russian Deputy FM Grigory
Karasin said in an interview with the Voice of Russia.

“Both Armenia and Azerbaijan are our close CIS partners. We value
relations both with Yerevan and Baku. We are sparing no effort fairly
and honestly to bring closer positions of the sides on Karabakh issue,”
Karasin said.

According to him, it is a complicated story having deep roots and
long history. First of all it is necessary to focus on the OSCE Minsk
Group which is working hard, he added.

Karasin said the Minsk Group Co-Chairs are paying regular visits
to the region where they meet with the leaders to help them find
acceptable wordings for the future documents.

“We support their activities and reckon on concrete results,”
he emphasized.
